Will my ps4 account have access to ships purchased on the pc version?
  • memnoch#6978 memnoch Member Posts: 197 Arc User
I hope in the future you will unify console with pc. But please wait a year before you do. Pc has a highly inflated economy and don't seem to think very highly of adults who don't enjoy the myriad problems that go along with pc games.

The level of snobbishness from SOME of those very posts show exactly why they MIGHT be poison to a new console clientele.

I doubt this would be cross platform. I sure hope not. *shudders * DCUO...

I truly grew to despise the pc version and it's community, but perhaps this is a chance for me to start over on ps4

From my experience it doesn't matter what platform your on. You will find confrontation everywhere you find people. Same as work.

You know, the big kicker here as far as crossplay is considered is NOT Microsoft, but Sony. You know what I see happening? XBOX and PC play together on a cross-play server, with PS sitting in the corner. And someone pulled out DC Universe Online, a game I play. XBOX has it's own server, and PC and PS were already cross-played as the company that develops that game used to actually be the MMO affiliate of Sony, called Sony Online Entertainment. They were thus able to put the game on PC and cross play it with PS for that reason alone. But now, as they are an independent company, they not only were able to make the game on XBOX, but have to consult their former overlords in regards to cross-play including Microsoft's console, WHICH HAS BEEN SHOT DOWN. The big problem here is thus not Microsoft giving the nod, but Sony, who has refused to do so within the last 3 months. Thus, if cross-play does happen at all with STO, I see it only including XBOX, and not PlayStation at this present moment, due to Sony having their heads up their butts.

I'm no lover of Sony, but they do allow cross play between PC and PS4 on Street Fighter V. On the other hand, that's a PS4 exclusive with no game on Xbox One at all.

While I'm excited to see investment in further development for the game (specially the graphics update), I am sad and disappointed at the prospect of not having cross-play between PC, PS4 and Xbone. As is has been said above, Final Fantasy XIV showed it can be done, and it can be done right.

And the absence of cross-play, as I see it, goes against the very philosophy of Star Trek. Technology is supposed to bring us together, not set us apart. I see no benefits whatsoever in fragmenting the playerbase.

Well, inversely, there are plenty of people who don't play STO who would because they don't have a PC. I didn't get to play STO until 2012, because I didn't have a computer that was strong enough. If I had the option on my Xbox 360 back then, I would've gotten on much sooner. So in that way it's bringing the product to the wider consumer rather than fragmenting people.

I can see STO on console being a great thing for STO if its done right but if PC players dont get access to the C-store stuff they purchased on PC when it hits console i think it will take along time to get off the ground i for one am a lifer and if i dont get access to my stuff on my PS4 then i will just stay on PC and not play console version however if i keep access to my PC purchases on my PS4 then i can see my PS4 becoming my main place to play STO

    This.

I don't mind starting from scratch by creating a new character on Xbox One, but I would at least like access to what I bought on PC. So as I rank up with my Xbox character I can use the C-Store ships I already own. I'm definitely not buying them twice. They should make it so we can log into our ARC accounts, enter in our Xbox Live/Playstation gamertags and link them together.

When I buy a ship on PC it should be available to me on Xbox/PS4.

Well look at DCUO. I first bought that game on console, bought some dlc packs and then decided to play it on the PC. My dlc on the consoles didn't port over, and I was expected to pay for them again on a different account. I expect the same thing to be done here.

Does anyone know if we will be able to transfer our toons, gear sets, and ships over to console? Because that would be a ton of regrinding and money just to get back to where we are now.

Not likely. Why make you buy something once when they can double their money by making you buy it twice?

STO isn't DCUO though. I've noticed that Cryptic does things a lot differently then others MMOs. Granted my knowledge of other MMOs is limited, I do know DCUO and whenever they release a new episode in DCUO it's paid DLC. If you're a subscriber you automatically get access to everything but if you're free to play then you have to buy each new episode they release. Cryptic doesn't do this and lets everyone play everything regardless if you're a subscriber or a free to play member. This includes new episodes, seasons and expansions. Cryptic is actually pretty generous that way. If they don't follow DCUO's DLC model, then why follow their Console port model?

    Cryptic can do things differently.

Because that's crazy. Why would I spend $30 for a ship, only to have to turn around and buy that same ship for another $30?

But you notice how they ar not actually the same ships. Two different ship models. Even different stats. And you can guess what is more expensive to make - a second ship model or the stats.

I suspect a licensing/contract stumbling block might be that Sony and Microsoft will want their cut of any in-game purchases, and if people get to transfer purchases, what would happen? Can Cryptic tell Sony and Microsoft they won't get anything from that retroactively, or will Sony and Microsoft insist?

But in the end, the console releases are not happening so that people can move from PC to console. They are happening to reach new gamers, that don't have existing accounts. So spending time and effort on a transfer solution is probably wasted when there are plenty more pressing things to address to make the whole console game work.

Meh, they look pretty similar. Like I wouldn't call Death Star II a different model. It's just bigger and has a exposed superstructure, besides that it's more less the same.

@starswordc and @mustrumridcully0 are right about the consoles. Cryptic and certainly PWE are a business. They didn't do all this work to port a percentage of their PC players to the consoles for free. They did it to bring new revenue. You won't be transferring your accounts over. You will probably have to use your console account to start over and pay for the ships again if you so choose.

People are assuming that the reason you can't link accounts from different ports is a "Cryptic" thing. I am not sure it is. I don't have much experience with Microsoft/Xbox, But my understanding on the PS side of things is Sony is very protective of what does and doesn't have access to their accounts.

It is entirely possible that there is just no way to cooperate with Sony (or Microsoft) to link your Arc Account to your PSN (Xbox live) account. I don't know if/how other games do it, as no game I play as ever had the same account across multiple platforms.

Does that really matter though?? Laying blame on any of the parties involved will not change the fact. Even then I wouldn't care since I will never play STO on the xbox 1 I happen to own. That's all there is to it. The majority of current players who would rather play this game on a console will not do so if what they achieved so far on an account level is not going to transfer to the console acc. So the console news atm is a farce to current players, unless Cryptic succeeds in increasing the overall player-base to an extent that they can make a step forward in development that all three factions of players will be happy with. Still, for the moment, what I feel is happening is that the console-news and the small-scale direct marketing campaign coming with it is being forced upon a player-base which does not really care about consoles after half a decade of pc gameplay, but is desperately hoping that this news - and the assumed rise in number of players - will bring a jump in the quality of this game(whatever that really means). So what I see -and personally feel too - is a high level of confusion.

Assuming I understand what you are saying, I don't think we are in disagreement. My point was intended to go to the people who are mad at cryptic because they can't play on consoles without starting over completely. And are acting like it is some cash grab Cryptic is doing to get them to basically spend double on something they already bought. And it simply might not be true.

I agree, going to consoles is not meant for current players. In truth you have little benefit to look at consoles, because, as people have said, you would have to start over from scratch. But that was never the reason to go to consoles. It is to potentially increase the playerbase by exposing people who don't have computers (and only play on whatever console) to STO. Will it work? Only time will tell, But in my experience with other games, there is every reason to believe there is a HUGE playerbase, not currently in the game, which will now be playing the game (and hopefully spending money) that was not there before, but will be now that it is on PS and Xbox.

There is so much wrong with this game. It's still one of my favorites and I hold from complaint more often than not because of 2 reasons

    1. It's free
    2. It's Star Trek

    in that order

this game will definitely not be free for console players. It will cost them $60 just to see what the game looks like. XBOX users can no longer rent or really even borrow from a friend without jumping through hoops. so that's $60, an hour to download, more than likely a first day patch of equal time. Who wants to bet the servers don't work reliably for the first few weeks?

Knowing Cryptics history with reacting to fixing bugs, particularly core issues, and knowing I would now have to pay for this lack of quality I just imagine the first 6 months or so Cryptic being under heavy fire from a completely different gaming community.

We have a single PvP map, to go with a severely broken PvP

    Insane power creep

Nickle and Dime culture (STO will no longer be FTP, but you can bet after that initial $60 investment everything will cost the same as it does now)

Silly and not so silly bugs all over the place (my fed ship still has green warp trails, DAMN NEAR EVERY TIME I WARP OUT. How does something like go live with the frequency at which it occurs and remain a bug nearly a year later?)

Lighting improvements are going to help but the graphics are still laughable in comparison to their competition, especially ground (anyone recognize that planets have sunlight across their entire surface? they have no dark side). Laughable.

Spending time fixing things which aren't broken rather than fixing things that are (I admit I rather prefer the new DOFF interface, but it was completely unnecessary compared to time that could have been placed fixing core gameplay issues and quality of life improvements).

Honestly the best outcome I see for this is a quick infusion of cash for relatively little investment riding on the coat tails of the 3rd film and the upcoming TV show. A single first day patch and maybe one more. DLC maps for PvP released for maybe a year and that's it. Then the game will die out and that revenue will be put back into the PC version.

The other end of that might be: Does Sony or Mircosoft want their cut of any potential transfer players? Folks with an older laptop...
    For example:

But no - laptop will have to suffice.
... might purchase things through their service (giving them their share) despite having existing assets available. Sony and Microsoft likely stand to lose very little on grandfathered purchases compared to their exclusion; while the grandfathered purchases could cost them a cut of things they had never sold in the first place, their exculsion could cost them an entire group of players that might've made new purchases.

Of course, the sticking point might also be on PWE/Cryptic's end. They were making enough off of STO to develop STC, so maybe they don't want to have Sony and Microsoft cut into existing profits made off of existing players; rather, as has been publicly stated, they want to attract new players (with the subtext being that they hope to generate new profits from those players). Then again, we don't know how much of a cut Sony and Microsoft ask for as opposed to Steam... well, I don't.

Also, to hazard a guess, the C-Store will exist and will require Zen, even in STC. Console players will merely have to purchase that Zen using the appropriate console currency rather than through Arc. The reason for this guess is that STO has a Dilithium Exchange mechaninc as a means of generating income from F2P players, and for that to function the Zen purchase mechanic would have to be carried over (or converted to a "Console Currency Exchange", which I don't really see happening). Plus, if at some point they do plan to consolidate, it would leave the door open for patching together the scattered playerbase for STO/STC with a minimum of muss or fuss. Of course, since I wan't really a fan of Neverwinter Online in the first place, I don't play that on PC or XBOX... how do they handle cash shop purchases on XBOX?
