Yeah I could see them closing down the pc server but it would not be for some time - not until the console was doing well and making way more money than pc. If that happens maybe by the end of next year it seems certainly plausible.

I wonder now if the new expansion is basically geared all to console?

I don't know if I would play on console. I don't have one right now. I would guess that going forward at the very least most effort will be expended on the console version.

I am still waiting for (and hoping for :/ ) a Steam Linux version. I would like to play across various computers, running a mix of Windows and Linux, in multiple locations.

Even if we can't actively play our own characters on each platform, not allowing the three to all interact on the same basic play server would be a mistake, imo. I personally wouldn't care if I can't transfer my characters, however, building up two isolated communities in addition to the PC doesn't add to the PC crowd, and may take away if it came down to new players having to decide between platforms, thereby passivley removing new players from "our" universe. If I wasn't a LTS there would be a strong argument to switch if the player base of one console explodes while the other two remain static.

    Is that all speculation? Yes.

Does that make it invalid to point out? No.

We should have been clearly told this up front, as now I'm holding off on even bringing it up to friends until we can get a straight, dev answer

I also agree with you, we need more information.

I to am holding off telling my friends about this till I know more which is a big mistake in marketing if you ask me.

Now I do understand that maybe being on the same servers (Xbox, PS4 and PC) may be difficult I understand that and I also understand that maybe being able to transfer my toon to console maybe over powered to new players, where I have over 4 years exp and items but is this not how most people started on the pc anyway?

I may have been around for quite some time but there are players that have been playing longer than me and they did not get reset when I started and I am sure that people that started from day 1 and still playing don't get there accounts reset every time a new player starts in 2016 that would be ridiculous.

The only way that my and many other peoples accounts would be overpowered to new players is in PVP "ONLY" having better equipment and gear will not effect single player or PVE in the slightest if anything it would make newer players ask where to get the gear and promote learning and interaction with us older players (Hell, that's how I learned) and all new players that decide to stay will play the game and level and grow in the same way we all did when we first started, so yes I see no real reason why they cant give us the tools or opportunity to have our current accounts the ability to be transferred to the console.

We already have the ability to transfer a toon to the tribble test server so it is possible and the same could be said for transferring a Xbox live account or Playstation network account to a new console.

The ability to do it is very possible and should be allowed in my opinion.

Question for the devs or those others in the know: will we be able to transfer characters and such to the consoles? I am really excited for this. I was forced to stop playing when the updates were officially too much for my desktop to handle. my laptop was in no way amenable to the experience of star trek online, although it could "technically" run it.

So the loyal PC gamers that supported the game and spent their money on this game get what? A "maybe somewhen later this year".
This game is bugged and working terrible for more than 1 year. An aweful performance on many PC and you tell us something about consoles?
This shows once more that you give a damn about the current player base.

In future there will be even more bugs in STO because thats exactly what console support means. You guys where not able to release bug free content for just one platform.
Now that you have to develop for multiple platforms the amount of bugs will practically explode.

Console support also means that gameplay will have to change due to the limited controls over there. This in return means that in order to have a fair balance between PC and Console versions the PC controls will have to get limited aswell. This might lead to a limitation of features/options for PC just to prevent that PC players have an advantage over console players when it comes down the the input options.
The gameplay for STO most certainly will change with this console support. Lots of options and freedom we had most certainly will vanish. There is absolutely no reason to be satisfied about such an announcement.
STO will turn into a console game and PC gameplay will suffer.

however the xbox one does offer peripheral support for keyboards. I am not sure about a mouse but could definitely be able to work in the keyboard for more advanced users. and, with a little help from microsoft, could probably get 16 button support on the Elite controller. then microsoft and perfect world could both make an extra buck.

Someone earlier mentioned how certain things in the PC UI that should logically be grouped together but aren't. I've always felt that STO with a streamlined UI would work fairly well on consoles and was wondering if it would ever make the jump. They're using radial menus because they're FAST.

I see no problem with the existing STO interface outside of its bug-ridden & FPS-robbing state. They gave us keybind options (nevermind the bugs when not using scrips), 10+1 or more trays, the ability to move them around anywhere on the screen, a lot of variety for customizing gameplay in the options menu to our individual liking.

I group things as I please and enjoy the freedom of doing so across all 11 toons, and never used loadouts cause they're bugged and I don't trust them with my in-game items. Yes it's tedious jumping ships, but to me that's part of Star Trek's complexity and not Star Wars or whatever else. Don't need no hand-holding when I can do it myself according to my own preference, playstyle, and logic.

I also use a joystick for my left hand for space combat, and while the existing joystick support does not work as I want it to, at least the options make it possible to emulate keyboard, binds, and even mouse movements with 3rd party emulation. Other games use 3-key combos for issuing team based voice commands - Tribes series, Legions Overdrive, and soon Midair - all PC-only games. Don't need no radial nothing.

UI doesn't get in the way for me, and becomes intuitive enough once you learn what each ability does and where everything is. They're abstract abilities with intertwined dependencies that get an icon with a mouse-over name and description that also updates in real time. If new players are driven away, good, I don't feel sorry for them and won't miss them as they have plenty of simpler games and apparently lots of console alternatives, but in the meanwhile as a PC user I always get the short end of things.

Well the point is, 3 platforms equals 3 times dev time to fix bugs and create content.
And since Consoles are much more popular (at least in numbers) i can very well imagine Cryptic abandoning PC support and closing down PC server.
    PLUS everything @alcyoneserene said.

Server code and content should be identical across platforms. Done correctly, a good chunk of client code should be the same across platforms. And having been a member of a cross platform MMO community (DCUO) longer than I've been playing STO, I can't remember anyone calling for dropping PC support. Instead, lots of people have called for dropping PS3 support, with others reminding them that it generates 3/4's of their revenue from the game. (Things are more complicated, now that there's also the PS4, but there are still calls for the PS3 to be dropped.)

I'll wait until we get more info , but until then I'll just stick with what I know ... -- namely that NW was also ported to console , but it is on a different shard (server) and PC players and console players can't play together .

I thought NW was designed from the outset to work on a console?

Very nicely done Cryptic! There won't be FPS issues on consoles like there are on PC platforms due to the fact that there will only be 2 'cards' running it. Also the fact XB1 has Windows incorporated will make it an easy port too :).

I, like others, will be disappointed if you can't access current PC toons on the consoles, but I also see a younger (but updated) version, that will gradually have the PC's current expansions added in time. In the event toons can be cross-platform enabled then I have an excuse to buy an XB1!

Just for clearance, all this needs Dev work time to be done, right?
If so, i'd rather see our STO being fixed and Exploration + PvP made right.

When the devs do bring STO to the consoles, then the servers should all be one big server. If they say it's too much work, look at DC Universe Online. They merged all their servers into one Big server. PC players are playing with console players. But then again, DCUO was made with consoles in mind. STO just has way too many buttons, and abilities to even be playable on a controller. Just imagine trying to play WOW on consoles. Look at SWTOR. It can't be played on consoles either.

Just a few more mess ups by the devs and I can tell you that STO will suffer heavy player loss only because of the events is why most players I see log in anymore.

So, the million dollar question. For those of us who have put massive amounts of time into the game, will we be able to migrate our accounts over to the console? If not, will we get some sort of returning player bonus? What about lifetime subscribers? Will they get their perks on console?

They scrap mac support and then give the game on console.how long would it be before they stop supporting consoles? It sounds good in theory but lets be realistic most console gamers are into PVP matches and PVP in STO is broken so much is it virtually unplayable. So forgive me for being pessimitic but before porting to consoles the pc game needs to be fixed first

I could imagine they create a whole different UI for console. So when PC and console players would play together, one of them may have an advantage over the other. OR they would have to put console UI to Pc, which would be horrible IMO.

For all the fuss, when cryptic took over STO development, the game was listed as a cross-platform title. And in 2010 they said that they ALREADY had it working on consoles, but decided against releasing it for "business reasons" No really:

    http://www.videogamer.com/pc/star_trek_online/news/star_trek_online_on_console_scrapped.html

Champions was going to get a console release too, until they scrapped that. Though I figure that decision was more "Hey, SOE is doing a DC MMO for console... maybe we should hold off on Champions. What player would want to fight nobodies like Mechanon or VIPER that only the most hardcore of Big Blue Book owning tabletop nerds know about compared to Braniac or HIVE."
    robeasom wrote: »

And PC gamers aren't? The top 3 games by player count on Steam right NOW are DOTA 2, CS: GO, and TF2. So if anything, PC gamers are into PVP. I know people online who heavily play MMO's on PC, WoW, STO, whatever. And you know what they talk about besides raids against uber bosses? PVP!

I'm going to be blunt about this, PC gamers in general aren't any different from console gamers. They make "think" they are more cerebral or "better", but most of them are not any different from some Madden player on Xbox.

That includes MMO players. Whether it is FFXI, WoW, EQOA, DCUO, LOTRO, Freerealms, Runescape, Onigiri, TESO, STO, Defiance, you get the same sorts of player types and behavior. You think those EQOA players, playing on the PS2 back in 2003 didn't talk about builds and min-maxing just like people do here? (Also you could play EQOA on PS2 entirely with a keyboard if you wanted.)

Yeah, I know how PC guys get a bit perturbed when "their" game goes cross-platform...you should have seen the whining in the Diablo 3 forums. And I know you're worried that the PC version will get "slighted", but that doesn't usually happen. There's still a PC version of Diablo that only supports keyboard and mouse, and DCUO, and TESO, and War Thunder, and Onigiri

A lot of you guys really need to look at how they transitioned Neverwinter over to console. I imagine that STO will get a very similar transition. I, also, see a lot of butt hurt for no other reason than STO on the console. If you are really upset about not account transfers, then don't play on the console. The PC version will not die. Neverwinter is still running strong on both platforms and PC gets all the stuff first. As of typing this, per various devs, no cross-platform playing.

However, if there was some account items that can be transferred over, that would be awesome and if PS4 and Xbox 1 played together that would be equally awesome. Granted a larger server capacity would be needed.

Apparently you've never owned a console? There are stacks and stacks and piles of single-player and co-op games for consoles.

And once again, they dropped Mac because it was losing them money. They are adding PS4 and X1 because they expect to make money. If either of those versions does not make money they will drop it.

Adding consoles will be a good thing for PC players even without shared servers. More profit from more STO players means more budget for creating story episodes and other new content. We're also going to get improved PC game engine graphics this year thanks to the console ports.

When will the DX11 issues with some AMD cards running crimson software be addressed? Seems like no one cared, besides the people it has effected, about this issue that's been going on for months. Can I expect there to be DX12 instead?

Almost certainly before the heat death of the universe, but if you read the friendly announcement they are updating the graphics code for PCs. So they're changing it and will be devoting resources to fixing graphics bugs old and new.
