It is right at the border and they had to put it somewhere. They choose it to be where all the other story planets were, so Beta. I think Borticus explained it at the time of the Sector Space Revamp.

well that excuse is bull. Alpha should be all fed space with the Cardassians being the border and Beta split between the Rommies and the KDF. Cryptic deserves a facepalm on that one.

Except that isn't how it works. Do a google image search for Star Trek star charts. All those with the divide between the Alpha and Beta Quadrants have Sol right on the line. Cryptic making the decision to put it slightly to the Beta side to help early low level players to not have to switch zones to travel to ESD was a quality of life decision.

Yea... but you see... thats not how it actually is in the show... Sol is on the border of the two quadrants.

Your opinion is duly noted and just like the other 15 or so threads about this subject that have come and gone...
Totally irrelevant at this point in the games development.
Time to either accept that this is how it is, or move on to another game.

Especially since canon sources are self-contradictory, there is only so much you can do. We have in canon that Q'onos is in the beta quadrant but on another occasion the whole Klingon empire was situated in alpha.
My mother was an epohh and my father smelled of tulaberries
The very fact that the Feds and Klingons are 'Alpha Quadrant' is a misconception and a generalization. The Dominion used the 'Alpha' Quadrant term regularly in DS9, but it's true meaning was the 'Alpha and Beta Quadrant Alliance'. The writers would have thought that this would have always been a mouthful, on screen, and it would have gotten tedious. However, the Klingons have always been in the Beta Quadrant and Sol, when the quadrants were established in TNG (this was the first reference as TOS 'Quadrants' were different and inconsistent), always bordered both Quadrants, especially after the UFP headquarters awas based there.
"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.

Really, its in neither. Sol system is supposed to be directly on the border between the alpha and beta quadrants. The devs did explain why it is in the beta quadrant is because it's where the majority of the game takes place, you barely spend time in the alpha quadrant compared to being in beta.
Can we just put sol in the line that divides the alpha and the beta quadrant? It would be nice if the dev take out that wall that is currently dividing the map and just move earth in the middle line.

Every time there's a thread asking why sol is in the beta quadrant, the devs lose more faith in humanity.

Well frankly the sector reboot wasn't nessecary. it was fine as it was. Most sources place Sol in Alpha and the majority of the Federation in Alpha. And the fact Kitomer was in Beta and a frontier planet leads to say the Klingon Empire is in Beta. SO all you facepalm me i facepalm STO more.

That's how I understood it as well... now I discover the whole issue is more ambiguous, especially with how STO is made. Good to know more.
Also good to know what kind of a reception I would get if I asked a question on these forums. I think I will keep my questions to myself.
