This is perfect for long-term storage of ships that you don't want to dismiss, but don't use very often either.

Lock box, fleet, and lobi ships in particular.

AND, since it only stores the ship with default costume and name, it means less load on the server-side.

Maybe I'm getting old. Before the reactions to this post, I thought that only Guild Wars 2 had dillusioned players that laureled minor changes as if it were the next best thing in MMO history. What is it with players that they not only put up with stuff with this (which I can sorta understand) but actually cheer for them?

what exactly is so awesome or nice with this feature??? i mean the idea behind is nice yea, but DRYDOCKSLOTS?! so to free up SHIPSLOTS we have to buy DRYDOCKSLOTS?? If thats the case i can just buy additional Shipslots and let the Ships active, so whats the Point???? There should be no limited Drydockslots bla bla, every ship that we dont need active should be "parked" to free up the space.

Sorry but i dont buy this, NOT even for a DOLLAR.

That's probably the thing, the only way this new dry dock system is of any value, given most players are not at max ship slot limit, is if dry dock slots are dirt cheap.
Well, you get a hand full of slots for free. That is probably "dirt cheap". Unless anything else changes about ship purchasing, ship slots or ship decomissioning/reclaiming, this will be a net improvement for every player in the game.

EXACTLY WHERE THE HELL WAS THIS WHEN I NEEDED IT?

It essentially has become a giant F U to the people who had dismissed ships to make room because either they maxed out slots or are to poor to buy ship slots or do not have the time to grind dil to zen for them.
Not implemented yet. life can be harsh, but it could be harsher - it could have never been implemented, for example.

I like this idea. I think it will encourage people to buy more ships, as they are less likely to buy more ship slots.

Also, I would love to see them create a system encouraging the switching of ships from our inventory, for missions. So, like switch to a science ship with secondary deflectors on some missions, then switching to an engineering ship for other missions needing engineering powers, then to a tac heavy for battle missions. Get people to make use of an inventory of ships. Also, not only ship profession specific ships, but ships of various levels and sizes. So for example, on some missions, drop down to a reliant class of much smaller size and hull strength for a specific mission, because of some stealth reason, the smaller size is needed, a ship specific feature, or maybe a less threatening ship for diplomacy reasons (i.e. a sector of space has a treaty limiting size of ship, or a specific ship at the time the treaty was signed). Some reason that could tie into the story line of STO. I would think that would be cool.

The ship’s costumes will be reset
Hey! I just want to keep my ships safe, not have zealous engineers ruin the paintjob and overexcited mechanics touch the nacelles in inappropriate places!

Can I execute/dismiss them if they change my ship while I'm not watching? Careful, as a fleet admiral, I have friends in the highest ranks, I'm not just any captain!
you can save the costume in the tailor if you wish.
Oh, I know, was just mostly joking. Mostly because of the IC implications (some engineer decides against your will to change your ship if you put it to dry dock, for no real reason other than being a jerk), and because a few ships got fixed/modified and some costume parts are no longer available or got remodeled, only existing because you saved the ship with this costume and if you try to go to the tailor, you'll lose them.

Of course, I understand the obvious solution is not to put them in dry dock, but still, that can be annoying.

    For example:
    9900_2015-10-22_00001.png
Note how the nacelles and pylons are different.

Yes, these can be counted as your own personal reclaim store/recycle bin/bank. Your spaceship slots are for ships you are using and the drydock is for ships you have put aside for a rainy day/need to get rid of temporarily to free up slots for a ship you wish to use now.

Hm... Ship Roster slots are to Inventory as Drydock slots are to Character Bank (no word yet as to if there'll be anything "are to" Account Bank)...

It's basically storage for ships you aren't using but you can switch them out with ships in your active roster. All players will get some slots for free, with monthly and lifetime subscribers getting extra free slots. It's sort of like a bank for your ships so you don't have to get rid of any to make room for new ships. Edit: The main purpose is so we don't have to discharge ships we can't easily replace such as lobi, lock box, and fleet ships.

You don't pay for the free slots you automatically get when the system goes life. So a net win even if you never spend a Dime or any Zen ever in your life.

Well will be useful for lockbox & fleet ships since you can't reclaim those but pretty much yeah.

    A few comments...

When a ship is placed in Dry Dock, does it also keep any saved layouts that were attached to it?

(Edit: Nevermind, I found my answer: http://forum.arcgames.com/startrekonline/discussion/comment/12754179/#Comment_12754179)

Also, I would like to see additional Dry Dock slots added as a Veteran Reward.

(I may not be Gold, but as a 1000 day Veteran I've paid in over and above the cost of an LTS. Not saying I'm entitled, just saying this would be a good way for Cryptic to show some appreciation for long-standing customers who didn't necessarily buy the LTS. I won't throw a fit if they don't.)

I would expect extra slots from the C-Store to be significantly cheaper than the cost of actual ship slots, and cheaper than inventory slots: cheap enough to offset the cost of additional inventory/bank slots to hold the gear that won't be stored with them. If it's not a good return, I won't be buying any extra dry dock slots.

Other than that, I expect this to be a nice QoL feature as long as there are no other gotchas. Would have saved me from having to dismiss ships to make room in my rosters.

Basicaly no expectations. Some People, you could throw a Bone with no Meat on it at them and they would Scream "Horaaay" and would make 50 Backflips and eventuelly have an Heartattack from too much Happynes. This is nothing but a Giveaway for a handfull of "downgraded" ship slots, and if you want more? Well pay for it, therefore no its nothing like a Personal recliam store like some people said, a reclaim store holds every single of your reclaimable Ships / Items without any slot limitation yada yada.

Sorry but still not excited. If all ships could be Drydocked without any Slot Limit than i would say yea nice, but the way it is, its just whatever. MY Oppinion.

It's an overall negative for me as I use a number of ships to store modules, weapons, or Rep gear on (since those can be swapped in/out while in space). The fact that the items are removed when they go into storage will force me to buy more Bank space or more Inventory space just to have enough space for them.

My bank is already mostly filled with seasonal items, items from lockboxes that don't sell (or don't meet the price I'd like to sell them at), and some items I've been crafting to upgrade (but lacking the dil to fully do so). So yeah, it's a negative in my case.

And my current game budget doesn't support such minor extras when a host of preordered games are all coming out in the next few weeks. :D

To be fair, it doesn't "force" you do to anything. The addition of dry dock isn't going to remove your currently available ship slots so you don't HAVE to move ships which are currently in your ship roster, to be used as storage space, into the dry dock...

I'm still forced to buy more ship slots if I do decide to buy more ships though. Fortunately, there isn't a single interesting ship outside of the Omega carrier that will be coming within the next few weeks or so. Defiant isn't a must-have for me, and that's rumored along with a T'Varo and BoP at some point. So this will give me time to add some extra funds into my gaming budget for the eventual new ships and ship slots that will come out and interest me (Omega carrier and any new Specialist ships, if there are any planned).

Really, at the moment, I'm at an impasse with slot availability. I've already begun dumping things to an alt for storage purposes, but even they are getting packed with all those crafted and lockbox items. Maybe I should just create another alt for storage. Probably on the KDF side as well so I can at least use them for Contraband harvesting, even if they don't ever break past level 21.

It's still not a negative for you, because at least you can now put the ships in storage. Before that, you couldn't, and would have the same item storage space problem plus a ship storage space problem.

Before the system, all you could do was unequipp all the items and hope you can make place for it, and then dismiss the ship, and if it wasn't reclaimable, you'd have to spend Dilithium, Fleet Modules or the $ to research a time machine or buy Cryptic from Perfect World to get your ship back.

I think it is really true that if Cryptic would hand every player 50 $, someone would still think there is a net negative in there for them. "Oh, but it's Dollar, not British Pound, and the exchange rate is in favor of the dollar this month, so not only do I have to get it changed, I will make a poorer dealer than I would have made 3 years ago when the exchange rate was better. And besides, the new game I wanted to preorder costs 55 $, so I still have to take 5 $ from my own pocket."

    So...,
If you save the Costume in the ship tailor and make sure you save the ship Loadout before Drydocking it...
    I don't see a real problem here.
When/If you pull the ship back into service, a few clicks later and your back to where you started.
(as long as you don't delete a piece of equipment in the interim)

The only exception would be for old ship costumes that no longer are available because of upgrades to the software.

To me, that kinda-sorta imitates the real world and navy ships, the old battleships were repainted and up-graded each time they went back out to sea, so I can live with that.

everything currently equipped on a ship will be moved into your inventory when the ship enters Dry Dock
i already have problems with my bank slots and i upgraded it at maximum. this is going to kill me:(

So basically.. "Item Claim" Is a feature you guys wanna charge for.

Since this is technically "Item Claim". This isn't even any form if ship storage.. it's IDENTICAL to Item Claim. Except you're selling slots for it.

What's with all the Reskinned UI stuff being passed off as "content" lately? The "Admirality" system, which "Isn't the doff system" but doffs glitch into in the foundry... Now Item claim. With Slots.

There are ships (Fleet ships, etc.) that can't be reclaimed if they're dismissed that you might not want to use currently, but don't want to loose or have to re-buy that currently use an active ship slot. It's a nice feature if you are in a situation where all these non-reclaimable ships are taking up those slots (of course if they end up being as expensive as active ship slots, then I don't really see the point).

This is both amazingly awesome to someone who has enjoyed most if not all of the multiple ships we can obtain, but sadly has run out of space for all the various newer ships who have come out. However, this is horrible as I have 31 ships with 31 different setups. 31x approx. 8-25 items per ship equipped= There isn't enough bank space, inventory to put up ten of these ships. I see why PW is giving us free inventory slots, we're gonna need them.
  • centaurianalphacentaurianalpha Member Posts: 1,150 Arc User
This is finally a welcome addition, allowing players to keep their older ships without having to buy additional ship slots. Since these ships will have an Admiralty value, and the gear does not affect the Admiralty doppleganger, this is an elegant solution to the alternative of discarding ships that may have been purchased with hard cash. Kudos to Cryptic for a player-friendly feature!
