So you "probably" have to pay for an upgrade to your T5 ship. Then you will "probably" buy a superior T6 ship that will be far more expensive, "probably" play in it until you have the trait and then "probably" return to your inferior T5-U ship to use the trait on it.
I think "T5-U" and "T6 capabilities" are implied to be synonymous.
Then everything would just be T6.
Even if you are correct about the 'starship trait' being transferrable to T-5U after unlocking it on a T6, the T-5U is still missing out on an additional BOFF ability, and specialist seats. We don't know a whole lot about the new specialisation or what kinds of abilities it will have, but even if we were talking about existing BOFF classes and abilities the ability to slot an additional one on a given ship would make that ship more powerful than a ship without that capability.

not every T6 ship with have the Specialist BOFF slot, so it cannot be that big of a difference.
All in all, I think I'm okay with this. I'm looking forward to seeing more information on T6.
Starships Traits are, at the moment linked to the final Starship Mastery level on T6 ships. T5-Us can only achieve Tier 4 in Starship Mastery so they'll get 4 other traits but not the unique Starship Trait. I'm hoping Cryptic changes this.
I predict near universal dislike of the decision to funnel everyone to T6 ships if they want to experience the new ship content fully.
It would be perhaps more inclusive if all ships could reach T6 status through upgrades, with a cost 75% that of buying a T6 ship.
Think Cryptic, not everyone wants to fly new ships and by locking the ship content out, you will be displeasing a fair sized portion of your player-base.
Of course, this is par for course for the majority of the decisions your company makes. Personally I am not surprised to witness another exclusive blunder like this one, no doubt because T6 ships are supposed to the next influx of cash...
Inclusive>Exclusive Cryptic.
While you're at it, please lower the DOFF costs associated with upgrading DOFF rarity, it is prohibitively expensive for newer players who do not have dilithium, and wish to obtain decent doffs...
I don't understand how you can make a decision like this without predicting the player base's emotions accurately. Nearly every time...
that seems like a shot to the leg. or maybe cryptic already planned it's new golden boy, super OP ultra mega rare seasonal drop shiny ship, and poor JHAS will be nothing more than a fading memory of the past... but it's quite enraging, considering they said the ship will be upgradeable to "Tier-6 capabilities" not "nearly Tier 6 capabilities". it looks like they just wanted a last cash grab out of the bug before they flush it down.
oh, and just look how many ppl will open lockbox for obselete ships now...

RnD and upgrade needs less RNG. Less lottery. Something has to change.
According to the Q A at the end of the blog, you only need to upgrade a ship once.
Yeah but what if we have multiple ships over multiple toons that we consider their ship. We now have to spend what 5-10 bucks a pop upgrading ships? Sorry bit asinine.

The ship traits go in a trait slot, so they can be used on any ship, from T1 to T6.
i didnt see the morbious destryer in the lobi store free upgrade area since its a lobi store ship but i am guessing is that its part of the mirrior ship class it doesnt get a free upgrade
My biggest concern is that extra Boff seat we won't get. While we don't know what the specialist skills will be seems like a bit of a need for T5-U ships to be honest.
This doesn't concern me as much... for the moment, anyway.
They even admit that all true T6 ships won't get all the fancy bells and whistles... so, this really is analogous to playing a Romulan character. You can play with FED or KDF faction ships, or with Romulan ships that have singularity powers. Not all Romulan ships have the same powers.

Eh this seems kinda equitable - not stupendous, but equitable....
I just think of a car dealer; you buy a 2014 car, and the 2015 models are notably better. Most dealers I would think say "sorry tough luck", so this seems, eh, mostly reasonable....(prolly get flame for this)...
I can tell you I will not pay $10 to upgrade even one of my T5 ships. I might pay $5 but 10 is a game breaker for me. $5 is reasonable considering the amount of ships I have. You price it any higher than that, then no reason to even look at buying T6. IMO Game has gone downhill the past 8 months and isn't worth that type of investment anymore. This game use to be F2Play. I guess those days are over. I paid (gold membership) when I didn't even have to because I liked the content and didn't feel gouged for money at every single turn of the page. I am not happy about paying extra for ships I already paid for, but I do understand it takes money to run the game. I am just asking to be REASONABLE about it and don't hammer the people who have already paid for ships so hard. You might keep a paying customer happy and make a little money in the end.
So, this news is what I would have expected for the upgrade process. So I wont complain, or rage since the information is incomplete. We don't know what this last trait that t6 ships will have and how much of an edge they will give ships over older models. And that is a very key thing to remember Older Models. At this point in the timeline of the game most ships are older and really should have been out of service for a few decades already. Still I will fly my Nova-Class because that is me in my little ship. And second what will the new boffs bring to the table in gameplay.
From a marketing point this is a standard and fair move for them to make with this style gaming model. Will see where the chips land on all this once the last bits of information are out. I hope cryptic keeps it balanced and fair on the player base. I know in the end they need to make money and push new content to keep the game going forward.
Space is vast, it's wonderful and maddening. Yet in that madness is some of the greatest beauty I have ever seen.
Like I said in the announcement thread this makes our T5 ships completely obsolete PvPwise and we'll see nothing but T6 ships in PvP when they drop...There's just too huge of an advantage to T6s.
An extra console slot, all that means to me is people will be slotting one more universal console further making the michael bay style even more cray than before. More clickies! Just what we needed. I just can't see how they came up with pve content that justifies needing this huge jump in power?

Yep, Lockbox Ships are pretty much dead now (except if you use ist just for the look...)
Beta, LTA, CE, Multiple preorder Versions, all Addon Packs except AoY, nearly all KDF/Rom and ~50% of all Fedships, over 25 LockboxShips, Endurer of Atari's "Year of Hell", but...
Every time one of the devs said tier 5 would be "competitive" I would become anxious, now it seems my fears are becoming real. Needless to say, we will need some information on star ship mastery levels, traits and specialist bridge officers before we know how much better a tier 6 ship will be. The additional bridge officer ability alone makes it quite a deal breaker to those who enjoy operating their ships to the maximum performance.

My suspicions that my favorite ship is going to be outclassed are coming true! Set phasers to PANIC!
yeah so gamble away but all the ships I bought and I have most of the T5 ships for all 3 factions are obsolete
as it states here .....
so its T5u or T6 or GTFO.
I cant help but notice that unless you're doing srs bsns PvP, STO is ridiculously easy. People have routinely completed STFs in Connies and Mirandas. Your ship may no longer be "top of the line" but it's certainly not obsolete.
Came here to mention the old Fleet Patrol Escort, noticed that's not getting the c-store upgrade treatment. Not really bothered because as noted earlier, STO's PvE is ridiculously easy, just curious to see what's up with it.
not every T6 ship with have the Specialist BOFF slot, so it cannot be that big of a difference.
But the extra BOFF ability in general is a significant difference, especially in PvP, and especially if the new BOFF class powers are in any way desireable. For example, if I have to remove an engineering BOFF from a universal station to slot one of the new BOFFs, I'll be markedly less durable than a ship which does not have to make such a sacrifice to make use of new BOFF abilities.

They clearly said in the blog, and the Q&A, that upgrades are one-time, account-wide purchases.
Why is the fact that we have to pay a little money (likely, the cost of one fleet module)?

I expected for a 10$ to get T6 ship not some crappy small upgrades to my 50$ c store pack.
and what about new players...how can they play new 50-60 lv content? They dont have c store variants so they must buy new 50$ T6 ship? Its kinda p2w,

They said in the T6 blog yesterday that not every T6 ship will have Specialist BOFF slots.
So they're technically are T6, just without the ability to gain a trait.
