- Starship Trait
- Additional BO ability
- Specialized BO seats
The above list seems like gamechangers for ships. (And is half the list of features -- not just "a few bells and whistles.")
If that's the case, then I'm sorry, but that will make T5Us obsolete from the start.
The ship trait will be usable on your T5U once you unlock it on your T6. We'll have to see if Specialist Boffs can use Universal seats, but if they're not going to have the crazy-OP abilities like Tuvok and Worf do, normal Boff seats should be fine. The additional Boff ability is probably the biggest issue.
So, some good, some bad, but the upgrade stuff was actually a little better than anticipated in terms of being an account wide upgrade, more free upgrades than I was expecting, and actually adding another console slot.
Still there's some stuff that keeps me withholding a final good opinion. First is, obviously, the Zen cost. In that we don't know it yet. Anything more than the cost of a Fleet Ship module and I'm probably going to call it a wash and ignore the upgrade system as too expensive to be worth it despite the perks. Second is the exclusion of Mirror Universe ships. I can kind of understand where you're coming from with some of them - the ones that are just re-skins of the Level 40 token/dilithium ships - others are distinctly Zen store flavored in the sense that they have BOFF seating layouts that would normally require the purchase of a Zen Store ship or Fleet Ship to get access to.
Edit:
I just want to put out there that I think the fact that we're getting an upgrade option at all is a great thing. I just worry that it won't be implemented in a way which makes it practical/useful for players. Seeing as I have an LTS I do in fact get a free T-5U for each faction which I WILL be taking advantage of, but I also have nearly all the Zen Store ships (not just the T5s either) and am very much interested in being able to continue to use them all into end-game content without becoming a burden on any potential team mates I fly with.
Okay, first of all thanks to LaughingTrendy for decrypting this Devblog so quickly.
Considering the content? Sorry it's not acceptable. I am not going to pay for upgrades that still leave my ship inferior, not even from my Zen stipend. One bridge officer power already is a huge difference, and the specialist officers and starship traits might be. If you are trying to sell me something you failed. T5-U is either just a band-aid to make our ships a bit better until we get frustrated and buy the new top tier or a cash grab before you rerelease the old T5 ships as T6 versions.

I am not criticizing, i am just asking for clarification, can anyone tell me, or has it not yet been decided:
I currently own a Scimitar and an Avenger, which I originally bought with Zen (from $$$).
The post mentions "free" ships in two places, in both places it does not mention C store ships being allowed a free upgrade (although in one place it mentions "I store" ships and is cut off, was this meant to be C-Store?)
If that is the case, then will it cost me an additional $5-$10 to upgrade the Scimitar and Avenger I originally purchased when at the time I thought I was buying a top tier ship?
And, if I do, will it be one mastery level and one boff trait and one boff seat short of the T-6 ship and if so how much will it cost me just to purchase the T-6 equivalent of these ships outright to rectify the perceived "issue"?
I have not yet looked at the list of T-6 ships so I do not know if they have already listed a Scimi or Avenger -equivalent.
Thanks for any info, or if it is too soon or not yet determined, just let me know and I'll go back into my hidy hole and ask later.
Cryptic thank you for finally releasing this information. Overall Tier 5 upgrades look pretty fair and equitable. Had you released this information the second the words "Tier 6" exited your mouths you would have saved yourself a considerable amount of grief from the player base however.
That said my only complaint is that T5 Upgrades will still be limited to 12 boff powers while T6 will get a full 13. I'm fine with the upgrades not getting to slot the specialist boff class(s?), and I'm fine with the upgrades not getting all 5 levels of progress (to be honest I wasn't expecting to get any, so getting 4 is really cool). But in gameplay every boff power you have counts and if T6 has 13 and T5U remains at 12 they are NOT competitive, especially in PVP (and I don't PVP).
Also I have to say it's sad that the flag ships are going to be Tier 5 Upgrades rather than jumping to full Tier 6. It hasn't even been a year in-game since the Enterprise-F left drydock and she's already seriously outclassed. All in all that's just plain dissapointing.
All very reasonable IMO. It's good to see all lock box and lobi ships getting free upgrades as they should. The zen cost of five to ten bucks also sounds very reasonable for others.
But! The big but! For someone that PvP's like me, all my T5 ships are now officially rendered obsolete as there is no way they will be able to compete against T6 ships in PvP content based on the info we've been given here. I know PvP players are not even on Cryptic's radar so it is what it is.
Sounds decent for the most part. A few questions though.
What is the difference, if any, between an upgraded standard T5 ship and an upgraded Fleet ship?
What I mean is, if I upgrade a Fleet ship to T5-U, will that have more stats/console slots than a normal T5 ship that has been upgraded?
If there is no difference, does this mean that the entire Fleet ship system now has no purpose? So if I want a T5-U ship, I can just skip getting the Fleet version and just upgrade the base model I bought from the C-Store?
Not really happy about this upgrade for a fee business - ESPECIALLY on my 'top end' fleet ships. So basically we can upgrade for an extra fleet module or two.
Who do I REALLY feel bad for? Poor peeps on a budget who fly mirror ships. From this point forward - anyone who pays more than 50K on a mirror ship on the exchange just totally threw there money away. In fact - I now see zero point to mirror ships at all.
All these upgrades sound really nice to me, i just dont understand the rage right now. the crystiline entity event is going on so lots of dil to be made plus a giveaway that starts fri more than makes up for the cost of upgrades. Cryptic is giving us some much needed padding but yet its still not enough for some. And of course nothing is really finalized yet so i say give them some room before you set your phasers!
Has the fire started yet?

So, none of the free leveling ships will be eligible for tier 6 upgrades. And C-Store ships will carry an additional zen cost. I can live with it I guess. Just a metric crapton of dilithium to save up between now and then.
What I don't get is why the mirror ships won't be receiving upgrades. They are also lockbox ships Their price on the exchange not being insane is a byproduct of the company's own saturation of the market. Or is it because they're merely as strong as the basic tier 5 ships?
And what about the Hegh'ta, that's my favorite Bird of Prey. There isn't a Fleet version, so are you guys holding it back for a Tier 6 version? Regardless it's the only Bird of Prey that I really love the look of.
Here's a question. Will future C-Store purchases of the pre-Delta Rising Tier 5 ships come with an automatic upgrade to Tier 6?
"Rise like Lions after slumber, In unvanquishable number, Shake your chains to earth like dew, Which in sleep had fallen on you-Ye are many they are few"
T5-U are NOT competitive with T6. The extra BO slot alone makes them much more powerful. Even an extra ensign slot (especially a tac one) can be a huge upgrade to a build. The specialist BO should be the only thing unique to T6 ships if anything. With the changes are they are stated in this blog, you HAVE made T5-U obsolete. Please fix this.
It would be nice if they extended the upgrade feature to allow you to upgrade an existing level 40 ship to its C-store of fleet version instead of having to make room in your shipyard, buy the ship, move all your equipment over and then discharge the old ship.
Finally the info we have been waiting for. Better late than never Cryptic.
As I thought, the lockbox/lobi ships will get free uppgrades, wich is good news, since I own some of them.
The bad news is that I will have to fork over hard earned cash, to upgrade some of my most used ships, wich is a real slap in the face, and a bloody shame. This reeks of money grabbing, wich is a real bloody shame indeed.
Not a good idea to make us pay more for ships we ave allready paid for Cryptic, makes me really sad indeed.
Ok, i understand that "T5-U" shouldn't be as advanced as the latest T6 wonders, that being said, i do like that the older ships can be upgraded to do 'most' of what a T6 can do, for the most part i don't think i'll miss the "Trait" and one boff ability much, so no worries there. I am concerned about the costs to upgrade Fleet ships, I paid through the nose for my fleet Venture Dreadnought, and I'm not really excited about paying out more just to upgrade it again...
I would like to ask that you guys make upgrading Fleet ships a little easier on the wallet to upgrade since most (if not all) players have already spent quite a bit just getting a fleet ship..
Thanks in advance
EDIT: Also, any word on what the new ship for tomorrow is going to be? getting details one day prior to release isn't too much to ask for is it? lol
Massive slap in the face that all fleet ships which ONLY cost fleet marks (which you had to grind for like HELL) will NOT be unlockable, even for a fee. HoH'Sus will be even more obsolete.
The problem I see is that they're adding more hull points, and implying that the enemies will be even harder to deal with than they are now. Well, NOW, escorts, raptors, and sci ships are already marginalized and almost incapable of handling the monolithic 1-hit-kill NPCs. Making them WORSE will simply reduce everybody in the game to playing cruisers or some variation thereof.
Its not a band aid its a life support for people that don't want to move along to the next tier of ships. Get on the bus or have it run you over.
No one has forced you to pay real money for ANYTHING in this game. Everything is grind-able, even zen. Show me any other FTP mmo that does that cause I don't know of any.

Paying Zen to upgrade my ships to new T6 version's I could have stomached, but paying to have a second rate ship - No thanks.

Thank you in fact for providing a path to upgrade them, the way no other MMO I've played has done when doing a level increase.
I'm entirely happy with this plan.

I'll probably also just go with T6 Ships when they come out and move on from my favorites.
Think about this:
American Football has been in open beta for 144 years. ~Kotaku
-Upgraded Tier 5 ships got the mastery level to 5 with an ability. "True tier 6" ships can have the Mystery Boff seating and unique abilities.
-Fleet ships should either cost less to upgrade, or be more powerful once upgraded.
-Fleet ship upgrades : These should be account wide too. Fleet ships were supposed to be the "end tier" ships of the game, so its only fair.
-What consoles will upgraded ships have? Could it be something like this : Escorts get +1 tactical, cruisers +1 eng, Science +1 science console?
Because another eng console slot on the Upgraded fleet B'rel may not be the best idea.
Only my Rommie toon can upgrade its main ship; and I hardly play it except during events. All my main characters are gonna have to get new ones.
Hope there are some coming out that I like.
I'd prefer that there was a generic, lesser trait for all the non-T6 ships.
That way, if you really, truly need to stick to flying nothing but a Galaxy you still get a trait eventually, albeit not as powerful as a T6 one.
I'm a little uncomfortable putting an entire game mechanism behind a pay wall.
ONE QUESTION: What about the non-fleet Chimera? It was not on the list, but the other two vet ships were, and all three fleet versions were.
I think it's that T6 ships get a slot for a special starship trait. T5-U's don't get this slot so you likely can't use them on anything but T6.
Confirmed: The fifth Starship Mastery level on Tier 6 ships unlocks the starships trait.

Fine-ish for me: T5Us get the "Starship trait" feature, leaving both BO perks as T6 exclusives.
Ideal for me: T5Us getting both "Starship trait" and "Additional BO ability" features. "Specialized BO seating" being the T6 exclusive.
