I think the fundamental issue here is still the flag grab thing... Clearly the game is capable of detecting when you pass over an area as a trigger... So why can't it tell who is the first, second, third, and so on to do this? Why is it so hard to just have the victory awarded like it would be in any race?
Because while the server can track this information "fairly reliably", the individual clients can't.
It has been said that the client/engine will periodically render a person that's actually ahead of you on the server either side by side with you or slightly behind you. Being that this is not an FPS with 30 player updates each second, and the PvP engine/combat system is less worried about "is the player putting a bullet through where he thinks the other player is" and is more worried about "did player pull trigger when target was in effective cone", we don't realize how "laggy" the engine truly can be...
(and don't forget the whole concept of lolGround...)
Would you like to see, on your screen, you in the "lead" position, however, because of the aforementioned issue you draw a 2nd place award? What would your first reaction be...
Then multiply this by 2 races an hour, over the 30-50 instances of Risa that's active, and, well...
Detecting big-time "anti-old-school" bias here. NX? Lobi. TOS/TMP Connie? Super-promotion-box. (aka the two hardest ways to get ships) Excelsior & all 3 TNG "big hero" ships? C-Store. Please Equalize...

First off I find myself pointing out one important side note to this discussion. Star Trek Online is a game. By logging into the client, picking your avatar, then playing you are thereby playing this game. The last time I checked, a game is meant to have fun.
Now I have unfortunately noticed there are to many people who sit for hours on end, staring at their computer screens in a zombie like fashion, so annoyed at their own dissatisfaction that they have to publicly proclaim their own self worth by raging over something but not taking steps to leave that situation.
Instead of raging at something, try getting off your chair, take a shower, eat something, or go out in the sun. All you ragers realize the sun is still around right? It's that big orange ball in the sky. I'm not talking about a party amplifier either. Leave your dungeon and go outside and see it!
Stop raging, have some fun, and finally remember life is more than Star Trek Online.

No! don't listen to this madness. Fear the evil daystar, for it burns.
...but what if you weren't the one being harassed, or even someone who is immune to said harassment tactics, but merely the friend of one or more players that was? Would you just tell your friends to leave? Or would you want to stand up for them?
It's in everyone's best interest to stop the trolling.
What happens when you don't put up with the rubbish of jerk players? I'll tell you exactly what happens: First you get trolled like there's no tomorrow in an effort to intimidate you to submission. When that doesn't work they spread lies about you and do their very best to discredit you, and with all the people on their side (they brag about their numbers as if it's the army of Gengis Khan about to conquer the world and they are the only Supreme Ones who have the right to talk dirty), you're in for an extended trollfest everywhere you go, because there's someone somewhere who thinks they know you and what you do and who you are based off something they heard from their "friends".
When that doesn't work they do their best to discredit and sabotage everything you do, from your fleet to your channel, to your forum posts, to following you across instances whenever they think they can get away with it.
How do I know? Because I'm one of those players who won't be intimidated and can't be manipulated by would-be bullying twerps; and if you been there, you know exactly what I'm talking about.
I can't speak for others, but the real issue is obvious, and it needs to be said straight: The problem isn't with the game or with game objects, but with a group of players whos twisted idea of fun is doing everything they can to ruin it for others. It begins with the player and it ends when understanding players realize this and make a choice that says clearly: sure you can do it and nothing can stop you, but you won't be no friend of mine. You're not fit for my company, you're not fit for my confidence, and you'll get neither from me.

I am neither intimidated nor manipulated by these people, and yet for some reason I never encounter any issues. Probably because my reaction to encountering these kinds of things is "lol".
You have to keep in mind, the people who do this aren't actually able to favor any particular side by doing this, as the barricade must be constructed well in advance, before the racers reach the finish. Constructing it after someone has already won and the race is over would be pointless. Therefore, it's just a terrain obstacle, like many on the track. Think of it as an interesting wrinkle added to an otherwise dreadfully boring event.
So I saw some covershields on the race finish earlier and noticed something. Rather than having those who paid to win the race with their superior boards crossing a good minute before everyone else, superior boards, advanced boards, regular boards and rental boards were all made equal. Everyone caught up at the end and when the shield dropped it was an actual fair race. The winner, in fact, was on a regular board. Those raging about cheating and hax were all superior board owners. I guess people don't like running in fair contests and would rather pay to win.
But you know what? I guess it doesn't matter now does it? By being allowed to visit their studios Cryptic has pretty much signed off on you and your fleet haven't they? They've said in deed what most of us have suspected for years. They're not going to stop you. They're not going to correct you. You won. After long last, you really, really won. STO is yours and no one is going to do a thing about it. Congratulations.

Have you tried hanging out with friends outside of your virtual world/immersion? They might miss you. You never know.

If you really are one of those players, then you know that the trolls are powerless around us. You'd probably know how to take a troll and use it to your own advantage. You'd also know that if they try to troll the wrong players, they'll get in too deep, and they'll tread carefully around them unless they make a mistake.
I'm glad to hear that though. MMOs need more players with thick skin.
Yes, those "friends" that insisted- insisted! that they name the fleet and channel after him. Not him and his alts, oh no.
Sounds upstanding and healthy. The "friends in your head" is totally reasonable. I should log in and do this... Oh wait... I have a job where I make money that is usable outside of a game.
The problem isn't with the game or with game objects, but with a group of players whos twisted idea of fun is doing everything they can to ruin it for others.
I don't really see why you consider this idea "twisted". It's simple physics. Matter and energy cannot be created or destroyed. For you to be happy, others must be miserable. For you to have, others must have not. Some particularly hypocritical people like to accomplish their misery at arm's length, making faceless others they can't see miserable for their joy instead, but the more straightforward and honest simply extract it upfront, to your face. How is this somehow more twisted? This is like people who prefer their meat to come in plastic shrink-wrapped packages with someone else doing the dirty work for them instead of a breathing, bleeding animal that they kill and eat.
If they disabled cover shields in social maps they would also stops cats from getting into places players were never meant to go as well.
If they are having issues with removing cover shields then how about this? Add the player's name and @handle to the shield (For example: Example@Trollfoolery's Cover Shield).

They *DID* disable cover shields in social maps. Apparently the disabling doesn't work too well.
Besides, I like the cover shields on the racetrack. That video was hilarious, watching people struggle to figure out how to react to this new and unexpected occurence as a few clever monkeys figured out how to go around or jump over.

Well, I don't know who is setting up the Cover Shields, and I'm not here to point any fingers. I don't care to play the blame game. But it most definitely -IS- happening and I would very much like the devs to look into it and fix whatever loophole is allowing the Cover Shields to be placed. Combat skills/abilities -ARE- disabled on Risa, so it shouldn't be possible. Obviously, someone's found a hole in the code to exploit.

Another person whining about the covershields making the race fair and balanced to all instead of pay2win.

I have lost several races that I would have otherwise won due to this.
