Well, there you go. That's why you don't understand. Your responsibility to the business stops at your employer's checkbook. When you have to run a business the ruleset is different. Especially in the service industries. You don't let a sale walk away unhappy. And I'm gonna tell you why. Because that person is then gonna tell everybody else they talk to about their experience. People pay more attention to the negative than they do the positive. Negative experiences, directly correlates to negative money, see? As a service worker, you don't really see this, unless you look for it, but I assure you, business owners are keenly aware of it. Next time you go to work walk up to your boss and tell them that you DON'T think the customer is always right, and see what happens. Even better, tell this to a potential employer in the service industry, and see if you get a call back. Don't forget to include the part about how you think people who ask for unorthodox requests, are mentally, unbalanced, nutjobs, and should be shown the door.
And please don't comeback with "Well, by your logic, asking your waiter to do your laundry is OK then?" We've already established that sort of thing as being patently, silly.
Actually I've been told flat out by my employers that the customer is NOT always right. And it frankly sounds like you live a pampered, rich brat lifestyle, because no restaurant I've worked for or ever gone to has made stuff that wasn't on their menu.
And yes, asking to be served bacon in a place that doesn't serve meat is just as silly as asking the waiter to do your laundry.

More than likely they're just grinning and bearing it for your money despite your unreasonable requests, so you obviously spend a lot on their food--more than their average customer.
