Honestly, the only thing Trek about STO is the name. I remember the first day I played it...shoot...scan....shoot.....scan......shoot........scan........so boring and so not Trek, but I was flying a starship, so I stuck around. The ships were about the only thing truly Trek-like in game, and that's not even true anymore. Sad really.
the only non faction ship ive ever gotten is the monbosh. im a pretty no bs faction guy. they put them selves in a corner were the game can only really expand through lockboxes with non faction content, a path that i dont think is sustainable and takes away from the trek factor with each box. im only here for the trek, and if pvp doesn't look anything like trek, thats a problem.
and thats just the ships, the combat itself looks totally foreign. trek ship combat was minimalist, 2 powerful cannons, with slow fire rate, not cannon machine guns. beam arrays unless they were handling point defense, fired 1 shot at a time at full power, not 8. arrays also have a fireing arc of everything within thier line of sight, and no alien ship beam weapons worked the same way an array did. it looked about right in tier 2 ships, and on npcs, but then it scalled into nothing that resembled trek at tier 5.
We'll I do agree that many of the lock box ships are ugly... however
They are mostly all very trek... people just don't like seeing them at ESD. lol
I'm no RPer though and don't really care.
To me flying a
Galor... is more fun then flying a saucer, dual hot dog ship.
Ferengi Maruder... yep more fun for me to... if I was going to RP I would be a ferengi I would eat tube grubs I would hire sleezy women to give me a lobe rub down... Hmmm might have troll the RP hangouts later and live that one out. Errr nerver mind.
Hirogen Ship... gotta say feeling like a hunter... Took a little sit down on my hunter bridge with the nets filled with bones swinging from the roof... and thought ya This is pretty sweet.
Pallisade... one of my favorite ship designs... and I am talking about the shows now not the game. I am one of the few that really liked the voth in voyager... and the cloaking science ship I thought was one of the best models they did for that show.
Wells... not my favorite model... the flying bat wing. Still its canon and the wells was in more then one episode.
Now the rest I would agree are mostly silly... the tholian ships rifts on the theme I guess, the romulan JJ trek Ship is sort of silly. A few of the big carriers are ok...
I guess my point is the lockbox ships have for the most part all been canon ships at this point... just not Fed or Klink. Honestly though if you said to me pick the stats and skin for the only ship you can fly for ever more... it wouldn't be a fed ship... well ok bad way to put it cause the brel is still the best looking ship ever... if that one wasn't an option though. I know I wouldn't pick a fed design. I prefer most of the lockbox ships, I get it though the RP folks don't want them in SOL space.

I'm in a palisade right now. Why? Because I LOVE the BOFF layout. No other reason. If I could have it on an actual Fed ship, I would. I really hate what STO has done to my beloved Trek... ya know, the IP where money doesn't matter. Now we have lottery style lockboxes, Romulan Warbirds orbiting ESD, Suliban Cell ships, Dino's with freakin' lazer beams on their heads... it's a joke.

I don't dislike the lockbox ships, they just have no place in Starfleet or the KDF. So I guess I'm one of those light RPers who really does want some semblance of real trek to remain.

Well all those ships are Trek ships... to be honest if the Trek of the first show existed in the way they talk about it. A federation of planets, the chances that all Federation ships where created in Human Ship yards would be about zero. A true federation would be a massive collected fleet of 100s of worlds ships.
That is the one thing that always made me sad about trek... they had the opportunity. To show how in the future humans would be the ultimate diplomats that would pull the entire galaxy together. (B5 went that way and I believe they show a more realistic vision of a human future which is still positive) Seeing as how we have a hard time pulling ourselves together on anything as it is now. It should have been the ultimate Trek Moral... Instead we see the US Military in space. It does make me sad.

No you're right. I just always assumed that those other races still had their ships and that Starfleet was standardized so that maintenance and training were easier. Also, that they used the tech and scientific knowledge of the other Federation members in the designs.

That is sort of the way they seemed to go with TNG no doubt. So from the later canon we have I am sure you and the rest of the hard core RP guys (kidden) are right... just feels so unauthentic to me. I liked Enterprise for that reason... showed the humans pulling everyone together... and when they showed up to help they where in Vulcan / Andorian / Tellarite ships. Made sense that they would combine there fleets and become the federation. Just don't see any of even the founder races agreeing to scrap there very expensive fleets and fire all there ship designers or send them off to live on Earth. lol
I don't remember if they really showed all that many other Fed ships on the TOS, I could be wrong though. I have a feeling that Roddenberry likely would have went more a B5 sort of way if they had the budget to do it. They had a hard enough time trying to make aliens that didn't look like humans in a blue paint.
What about Romulan ships that fight for Fed? Do you feel they are trek or not?
Yes they do... if the events of the destruction of Romulus are canon in STO. Then it is only logical that the Federation would work hard to include them in the federation. With a Civilian gov of course they would be all over that... fold another race into the federation.
What doesn't feel like trek to me is that there is NO other "federation" ships that aren't built on Mars. The very idea is TRIBBLE Sci Fi.

I thought the Caitian and Andorian built their own ships no?
That's also why my Rom toon named his ships with the U.S.S. prefix, which obviously don't sit well with some people but that's another problem entirely.

Well yes that is my point... if the Andorians build there own ships (as they should) why are they not part of star fleet ? (I get it they are in the game... I wanna see a new trek show about a completely alien FEDERATION star ship... crewed by mainly aliens with a handful of human star fleet officers and vulcans ect... that would be awsome)
Lots of people act like it only makes sense that worlds that are charter members of a supposed federation of planets wouldn't build ships for the federation fleet... let alone fly them in earths sector.
I guess I can under stand the point that most of the lockbox ships are not federation or klingon members... with the exception of the wells/korath I guess none are faction ships.
I think I have made my point though... for an All Inclusive Hyper Diplomatic Federation that conquers other worlds with words instead of guns. They have some how found a way to get every one of the 100s (and I think it might be 1000s in canon) of races to willingly stop using there own guns and rely on some human machines to protect them. They must be using some type of Vulcan Mind trick on them. I would think if Humans where asked to join such a thing... we would sort of demand to have our own fleet and build our own ships and be tagged as being part of the fleet of such a thing.
Thats utterly stupid, especially for a 3min cooldown lobi set power. I'm assuming that 8k is *with* tac buffs? Or base?
I used it for one or two rounds of PvE... it don't think I ever saw anything over 10k on borg... so I think that should tell you how well it would do vs players. base dmg was around BOL 1-2 range.

If I remember correctly, Kathryn Janeway once mentioned there are just over 150 members within the UFP. But she didn't specify whether the members are individual planets or what exactly. For example, is Mars a separate member from Earth. I think so, the membership is probably and most likely by planet but maybe not every single planet has an independent membership within the UFP.
When you think about it though, what is "Starfleet". Is it a military for the UFP? Starfleet likely serves a multi-purpose within UFP, a part of which is defense but it is not its primary function, which will likely be exploration and diplomatic contact. To this end, it makes sense that there is a certain degree of uniformity and standards within Starfleet as it applies across the entire UFP and we don't know why the hull configuration of the original Warp 5 program was retained but to me, it makes sense. Think about it, the only thing about a Federation Starship that reminds people of its Earth origin is only in the outter hull. The ships themselves use technologies and attributes from across many of its members. If Jonathan Archer were to board USS Enterprise-E, not only he would notice the ship is super advanced but many of this parts and technologies would look alien to him and distinctively not Earthly in origin.
I would think it would make maintaining common standards and maintenance much easier if all Starfleet ships share a more or less common base design. Similar to how airlines prefer to maintain a fleet of planes from the same manufacturer as much as possible.
Ships like Andorian Kumari or Caitian Atrox carriers are too unique such that if say they were to break down in a remote corner of the Federation with limited resources, it may make any repair effort extremely difficult as the expertise required may have to be diverted from Andoria which may be far away. But if the entire UFP shares a base design, it will make maintenance and support so much easier.

Hmm, now I'm semi-curious again. I mean, surely, with EptW, 5x CritD Tet consoles, Alpha, TF, DEM, FoMM and Omega, it might be decent. Make up your mind, Julius! *shakes fist*

If you think you can make it work all the power to you. lol Not like I wasn't trying to make it go. Pretty much all the wind up weapons end up being a DPS looser... even 2s ones.
