It's nice that you steer this topic back to Startrek minitua to save it from a watchful moderator's eyes, but it isn't really on topic, is it?
But if you need an additional data point for sensor ranges - The Wounded (TNG) may offer some insights as well. The Nebula/Galor fight is only followed on long-range scans, IIRC, and I seem to rememeber that some range information was in there as well. (And it fits non-show information from technical manuals that indicates ranges in the hundreds of thousand kilometers for weapons...) There is probably more with long-range detection of ships at warp et al.
BTW: Comparing TOS and TNG battles - TOS was the show with extreme high speed and long range battles - ships would routinely fly at warp speeds for maneuvers. Of course, back then they didn't have the SFX to show battles anyway, so they didn't need to come up with maneuvers that must fit onto a TV Screen.
Star Wars the Old Republic is the single most amazing game I've ever cancelled my subscription to (sorry, vet bills are killing me this year, needed to cut out some fluff from my expenses).

I am thinking of doing the same but because my time is hard to get in the game and with a new promo I will have a lot less time. I have been running a lot of ME3 MP though. Another promotion yesterday. So if they ever fix the game ending, I will have a lot of war assets from the start without doing anything.
Plus ME3 has kind of soured my whole gaming outlook. I'm really waiting on 1.2. If it doesn't re-energize me to want to play like I did before ME3 release then I'll be canceling too.

Mass Effect 3 MP is a lot of fun. I should have started it earlier, but I am a story addict and couldn't focus on anything else but completing the game.

Nooooooo!
Now you have given those (you know who you are), people the ammunition to say that TOR is failing!!!!!
That said, I haven't played since ME3 came out:(
Still, not going to cancel my sub and when 1.2 comes out, what out for my new toon (Black'dynamite), The first Chiss Jedi Shadow!!!!
I nearly had a moment of weakness and hovered over the play button on STO yesterday, but then I thought about what exactly was I going to do and decided to go play Wasteland instead.
£2k machine and I'm playing a 25 year game and loving it!
Mass Effect 3 MP is a lot of fun. I should have started it earlier, but I am a story addict and couldn't focus on anything else but completing the game.
I wish I had chosen to play a Vanguard after playing the MP part of Mass 3 and instead went Adept for the main game.
Still only played 20hrs into the game. Playing it on Insanity mode for my first run through and for the first time, the game really does feel insane (my reflexes are not what they used to be).
Hopefully I can finish this week so I can see what all the fuss is about the ending.
First time I have found the Adept class quite boring and usually I have heaps of fun with it.
Anyone know if their is a nightmare mode after completing?
well when you loose 500k players and 300k subs included in the 500k for the first 3 month then yes i would say failing there are many many many good things about tor that are wonderful but space combat well its just NO.
i still have a sub because of the people i play with but more and more i am coming back to sto why cause the ground combat is complex and awesome the space is epic and really feels like a epic space fight and also when i jump with my chars in sto it does not look like i am trying to take a giant TRIBBLE and only getting 2 ft of the ground.
immersion and realism are missing from swtor it just is and thats a shame here are 2 examples
1. a bounty hunter cannont use a jet pack to either escape in a fight or to travel through the game
2. the jedi and the sith are weak and pointless they are the elite of the galaxy but are portrayed like they are some first year rookies with a few magic tricks.
i can go on for days but if i had spent that amount of money making the game then i would not be impressed

Last I heard's released in other parts of the world, it will increase even more. it was still steady at 1.7 mil and when 1.2 comes in, then it will grow even more.
That said, it will still always be bigger than STO with more people willing to pay £10 per month then they were for STO.
At least TOR has 2 "FULL" factions, and 8/16 Classes compared to what STO has!
Star Wars is a bigger world wide IP then Trek and the game not only has more money pumped into, it's developers also have a better reputation (DA2 not withstanding;)), so I'm sure the TOR fanbase will still stick with it for some years.
STO is still on life support and I can feel another big content drought coming on.
And for the record, before the same old same old come on and talk about we are getting content, ships don't count as content in my book, C-Store stuff doesn't count as content. I'm not fooled by "everything is counted as content" speech that the devs and some of the same old same old say.
First let me ask this question, who are we first, Star Trek fans or Wars nerds. Let me remind all of you why we are all ST fans.
1. We don't believe in any weird religions, but the human yearning for science and the advancement of our race
2 our dads don't into a mockery of a Borg drone bad guy with a breathing problem
3. Come do i have to say it, Trek could blow the TRIBBLE out of Wars.
4. we could have a ST future while on the other hand we could have no future at all.
So i just wanted to remind you all who we are in this STO community, Trekkies to the end and we love
phasers not lightsabers
Watch Galaxy Quest. They poke fun at the Star Trek convention nerds. Your first line is already showing a bias that I couldn't even continue reading that.

I kind of did both side-by-side on my first playthough. It took me a few days to get my first level 20 in MP but by the time I was nearing the end of the first play, I just got in time to promote 1 level 20. Now I have either 7 or 8. Heck, losing count how fast I've been doing it. Even have another in the teens now closing in on another. If they fix the ending plot holes, I might play another class. I just wish I can play a Quarian or Asari now. I'm loving the "death blow" melee and small teleport Asari have in MP. Learning how to use them takes a minute though.
Well actually, there are a lot of cross-scifi fans such as myself. To be more specific, i'm a fan of SW, ST, and Stargate (SG Universe sucked though). Moreover, i'd have SWTOR too if it wasn't P2P (i can live with retail prices, but having to subscribe after buying the game... not a chance)
Edit: Speaking of Stargate, what's the status with SG Worlds? Last i heard, it was being reevaluated or something
Now you have given those (you know who you are), people the ammunition to say that TOR is failing!!!!!
Yeah, which sucks. But I like the game. And will return to it once I get ahead on these vet bills. Basically my neighbor's dog jumped over the hedge and attacked my dog on my front step 6 weeks ago. I got bit separating them. And my dog got his leg broken, a 4 day emergency vet unit stay, and 6 to 8 weeks in a cast. With sky high vet bills. It's been a nightmare. All because my neighbor is the stereotypical horrible pit bull owner (his dog wasn't even leashed, what the hell?) ... anyways ... gaming will be taking a backseat for a few months. (Except for the occasional jaunt into a free to play game, like this or LOTRO or the new Aion thing coming in April or even Everquest).
Hopefully Aric Jorgan will remember me and email me from time to time!

You should take him to court by what you said. His dog on your property attacks your dog. Open and shut case.
We called the cops they had us call animal control, and animal control told us this was the third report against that owner and his dog. But apparently he's got his dog back from them. I guess he paid a fine?
This is the third time he's gone after one of my dogs on my property since the guy moved in. This is the first time we actually filed anything. But this dog's pretty much a menace and it's because of the owner. Like every bad owner story you could think of SHORT of Michael Vick, this guy fits the stereotype. Every single time it's come on our property, it's been off a leash.
I'm not usually one to seek a lawyer, but this time I'm really really considering it.
Sorry to veer horribly off topic! To bring it back on topic, this is one case where STO being free to play works out well for me. Heh. But I will miss TOR. It's been an engaging game thus far.

in that case you do have a right to shoot it then
and before some one says i dont like animals i do have a dog my self a silky terrier
Been on my alt server w/ alt character, and I have to say...wow the imps on that server are bad...I hit level 10 on that alt, went right into pvp...been getting 5+ medals each game an a nice amount of kills....ad to watch a level 10 jedi guardian kill a level 47 sith warrior..
RIKER
Mister Data, reconfigure for a
high-resolution sweep with a
radius of one million kilometers.
Look for possible debris.
Data works controls once more.
DATA
Scan shows no debris within
that radius.
KRITE
I don't understand it. A
shuttle doesn't simply vanish.
Now Data should have told Krite: Well, our weak scanners can actually only work within six kilometers so Riker was just trolling you. We'll have to scan out here all year to cover it with our six kilometer limit.
You've kinda made my point for me. THERE IS NO CANON AS FAR AS RANGE AND DISTANCE ARE CONCERNED. Didn't I mention that? The game designers HAD to make some stuff up.
They made an aesthetic choice. Perfect? No. Maybe not. But at least they TRIED.
Fine. So if you want to interact with a space object you have to be right on top of it. Who's to say Geordi or data was doing an "interact with object" and not offering a "popup dialog" on a "reach marker"?
Look, I love the idea of two ships blasting away at each other from so far away they barely see one another as anything more than pinpoints of light. I'm a huge classic Traveller fan. But compare the distances above to the shots in Wrath of Khan where the two ships were practically smashing into each other. The devs had to make some choices and they chose, not surprisingly, to go with the more graphically exciting approach of having the ships at relatively close quarters. I don't see how that makes it somehow a betrayal to the spirit of the franchise.
It would be nice if STO took the Crew Skills idea off SWTOR for their crafting system. I'd be able to yell at Chief O'Brien to craft me some coffee any time. And whinge about the state of the replicators.
