Ok so I finally got in and found something interesting. 20 duty officer assignments were supposed to be completed over next 8-32 hours. All completed over the course of 10 seconds and ALL OF THEM FAILED! Even a few with 100% completion rates -.- Yay perfect world entertainment. Keep up the good ****ing work.

Ok, so number one: traceroute is about as useful as asking a shoe salesman about glasses.

Traceroute (without command line switches) uses a different packet than normal ping packets called an ICMP Echo packet, which anything it travels through can reply, and more often than not network devices block it now.

That being said, DNS appears to be misbehaving in some way but I can't quite detect what.

Now, the launcher itself is not the primary point of failure here, which is only more fuel to the fire on why most of these traceroutes don't really have much information.

    130129 02:25:29 14 [1]: HTTP patching connected to stohttppatch.crypticstudios.com:80
    130129 02:25:51 15 [1]: Using HTTP patching: server stohttppatch.crypticstudios.com port 80 prefix Startrek

    130129 02:35:51 5 [1]: Syncing files

The server at stohttppatch.crypticstudios.com is (at least for me) causing my problems.

Now, using one of my own servers located at a datacenter in san antonio, I am able to have a field day connecting to it as much as I want. With my machine here at home in south florida, I can do nearly nothing.

The errors I am encountering ARE hop related, there is something wrong with the route. Since I'm in front of most routes by about 3 tiers from my server it traverses unobstructed.

For the sake of time and to ignore useless information, here is the traceroute that actually helps:

    8 19 ms 19 ms 19 ms 74.175.192.166
    9 21 ms 22 ms 23 ms 12.122.106.94

    22 65 ms 71 ms 71 ms 216.52.61.78
    23 * * * Request timed out.

216.52.61.78 is an internap router, best as I can tell its either a peering router or its a perimeter router into their datacenter... I don't know where cryptic's patch servers are.

Heh, still screwed. Seems to freeze while loading the launcher. Relavent lines of TraceRT follow:

This leads to a frozen launcher. Stuck on "Loading Launcher" still. Guess I'm SOL since you're not indicating that this is still a problem.

The launcher loads from servers which appear to be having some issues. Just because you experience the issue in the launcher does not mean the problem is *with* the launcher.

My launcher is saying unable to establish connection to patch server or will load the screen to log in and never load the patch at the bottom of the game client window. It's not a ISP or a problem with your computer. Clearly, Cryptic has messed up again! I wish someone within the company would listen to their customers and get this game back up and running. With all the money you are making, we gamers shouldn't be having these problems trying to play the game!

I did a little more digging and I'm no longer sure of the dns fail.

It turns out that PWE as a whole has datacenter space at the georgia facility I encountered the direct problem at.

Doing a bit of digging, the reverse hostname for the border device thats failing is "perfectworldent-4.border11.bsn.pnap.net."

Now... I should note that this hop responds. So, generally speaking a firewall or load balancer will be the next hop in the journey to whatever server(s) are behind it. Either way, the packet stops there and gets no further.

I'm done trying. I have to work and I have this thing called a LIFE. They want to play these games where they pick and choose who gets to play....so fine. They have the money so they win. I have never fully regretted paying for a lifer, but today I can honestly say it was a mistake. Ever since PWE took over, it's been downhill for this game. It was JUST showing promise after a year-long content drought, and then PWE decided to systematically destroy all existing potential. In so doing they have ignored the needs of their player base, sucked our wallets dry, and thrown the Trek universe to the wind. This perma-crash is a prelude to the death that many of us have been anticipating. Some have even been looking forward to it. It's hard to imaging this is a cooincidence when it's gone so far downhill so quickly.

Here's to STO. May the next Star Trek MMO be done by a better company.
My Old Blog about things that could and should have been added when I wrote it. Not sure what I want to do with it now. I'll just keep it available now that most of it is outdated.

At present I am unable to log on or patch, the launcher sometime comes up, sometimes doesn't. Everything worked fine this AM before the patch. As per Brandon's earlier post...

I'm sure it's working great in at least one universe... just not the one I seem to be in.

    Hi Captains,

The team is investigating, but this does not seem to affect all players and may be regional. To help in the investigation, please run a tracert (instructions for this process here) pointing to launcher.startrekonline.com and copy/ paste your results in this thread if you're comfortable doing so and making sure you star out your local IP address.

    Cheers,

    Brandon =/\=

Is it standard policy in all MMOs to blame the customer or ISP rather than fix it on your end? The CS is as bad here as it is in SWTOR. It's been 12 hours since you made this new patch and the game has not worked since.

Don't just say you're aware and put up a tracer post, look into it and fix it. I put in $200 for a lifetime sub and spent a lot on c-points/zen.
