Names after merge are unfair. One server gets the non suffixed version and the other does.

From your announcement you guys stated that players with the same names will get a suffix. But only the listed servers, so that means players on Sanctuary won't get a suffix and keep the original? This better be wrong and also what if someone gets the suffix lets say LC and there is a character with that combo what happens then?

PlayerName
PlayerNameLC
After merge:
PlayerNameLC
PlayerNameLC [Because PlayerNameLC did not exist on Sanctuary]

Honestly I don't think this is going to be a big issue. I agree it's not particularly esthetically pleasing.
And yes, as far as the official news seems to say the only suffixes are LC, RT and HL.
What will probably happen if someone happens to have a LC, RT or HL on the end of their name already is that they'll get a 2nd one after the merge, since that means someone on the other server also has the same suffix for some odd reason (I feel this situation is so rare that perhaps it might effect a small handful of people at best).

I don't see why it has to be LC because that is just ugly and stupid. I would be totally fine with numbers with a free name change stone in case we ever want to change the name. Also, what about inactive players that is so stupid that inactive players can potentially have our names as well and force us to get this extra suffix when they should get the suffix.0

I've been through a server merge before on another game that had a similar issue, and they just went the route of making you rename your char before you were able to log it on.
I still don't think this will end up being a big deal. From what I've seen so far, 90% of people have duplicate names because they themselves have made a 2nd char on a different server with the same name. Like I've said on other threads, if they delete their dupe char NOW, it'll be gone by the time the server finishes merging and they wont have a problem, probably. For the others, just from seeing names on the Sanct server over the years, if there are "unique" instances of doubling from different individuals, I'd be very surprised, at least surprised if the number of individuals with the same name is large enough to notice.
It would be great to clean inactive accounts to free up names, but then when do you draw the line?0 -
My thoughts are that what happens if there is already a character on Dreamweaver named abcRT and a the character abc on Raging Tide, then what happens? Only adding suffixes to one servers names will end up in a mess when there is already characters in their system with those names.
As an alternative they can give an ARC code or some sort of log in reward for a name change stone, so all those affected by this change have a possibility to get rid of the suffix. For all those players that no longer play the game, this will become irrelevant anyway.
Also just deleting the character on the other server does not work. It is not possible to give a char a name that have been used once. So even if the character is deleted it still "exists" in their database, and cannot be used.

I think the absolute best case scenario you can hope for at this point is that enough people complain about the suffix that the people effected by the suffix get mailed a bound-to-account name-change stone. Anything with more steps, or extra levels of code analysis probably won't happen.
Honestly, the thing I want people to think about more than anything else is how risky merging itself is, I think that if everyone's chars come out the other end of this with all their gear and stuff in all the right places, we should be grateful, and deal with the naming issue afterwords >.>0 -
can't see PWI giving out thousands of dollars worth of name change stones, think your all dreaming if you think they will do that. Even if it is 'bound' to the account, can you imagine all those people changing names? Can't see that happening.0

I agree its silly that only some servers gonna get the suffix on their char/guild names. Its better to give them an option to change name without costs, because its not their fault they have same names as some other player on diff server.

The older more populous non pvp servers are being left as undisturbed as possible by the look of it - seems like common sense to me to be honest. And some servers already share a name database so there is no conflict to be managed upon merging.

In your example, abcRT from Dreamweaver, and abc from RT are 2 different names, so while it would seem like abcRT from Dreamweaver was actually from RT after the merge, that's only a perception issue from a player perspective, not a database issue.

I think all affected users should get a free identity stone. I'm not sure how double conflicts will be resolved. I'm guessing it will go to MaryLCLC but what if there is a triple conflict and MaryLCLC is taken? Does it go to MaryLCLCLC?0

Yes, I think the suffix will keep being added in the extremely improbable case that a MaryLCLC existed.
Thankfully even if there's a MaryLCLCLCLC (current max character limit of 12) already there can still be a MaryLCLCLCLCLC since the max character limit is increased by 2 (new max character limit of 14).
Remember, we're only considering "LC" a suffix now, before "LC" could just be the way someone chose to end their name for some reason, so technically no one will have a repeated LC suffix exactly, it will just look like it was repeated.0 -
Pwi is not stupid. They know people will hate their names. It's a potential money maker for them. Their not going to give free name change stones.0

The server that was opened first, should have priority to names. Others should get free identity stones upon request of a jacked up name.0

Basically they are taking the largest servers, and merging the smaller servers into them.
Which makes perfect sense to append the duplicate names of just the smaller server. It makes for a lot less work.
As for the PvP to PvE issue, nothing is stopping you from running around in PK mode all the time. A lot of the same people you battle with will likely make the same choice. Your RPK targets will diminish, but we chose PvE because we don't like being ganked by peons.0 -

This will be the least of everyones concern.
