Please tell me that handling gold spammers will be a priority for Neverwinter? I've been playing RaiderZ (another Perfect World game) and played RaiderZ while it was in beta. It had gold spammers in beta (which is kind of odd) and has even more gold spammers now. You can't go to any zone without getting spammed. You can't be in the main city without getting spammed in say, shout, general chat, and via whisper.
You pretty much have to disable chat channels or manually block every spammer with the /block command (no ability to block by right-clicking names in chat or anything typical like that). The more public channels in town are flooded with competing spammers to the point of it being pretty much impossible to use that chat for anything.
I see this as a pitfall of F2P - it's so easy for spammers to cycle accounts. So just removing spammer accounts isn't going to really work even with IP bans and such. Robust chat filtering is a necessity.
So not only do you get much lower quality players when you're totally F2P (at least charge for the box so people have to be marginally invested and give a minor HAMSTER) but it opens up the door wide to spammers.
Of course, the #1 way to deal with gold spamming is to destroy the accounts of any cheaters - like those who buy 3rd party data to shortcut games. Kill demand by removing cheaters. Gold spammers don't just spam for the heck of it, they spam and compete to out spam each other because there's demand.
Regardless, I hope chat in Neverwinter doesn't end up like a useless flood of gold sellers that it is in RaiderZ.
RaiderZ is a decent game but the gold spam is unbearable (and it isn't helping that being entirely F2P attracts the most absolutely immature and crappy players).

Yeah, it's really a shame. I really enjoyed RaiderZ but didn't stick with it after beta because they failed to address the gold spammers problem, and since then, it's only gotten worse. Now there are dupers, exploiters, and bots running around too - and don't try mentioning it on their forums, because instead of banning the dupers, exploiters, bots and spammers, they'll just delete any thread that mentions them.

I can assure you the Neverwinter Team is VERY concerned about this issue and was actually discussed just the other day between the moderators. Everything you said is something very much known to both the developers of RaiderZ and Neverwinter and they are actively considering methods o prevent gold spammers from even gaining a foothold in Neverwinter.
There's really nothing to share about how it will be handled but it is a serious issue Cryptic and PWE will be trying to solve for both RaiderZ and Neverwinter.
Edit - I have an in depth post hidden on the forums detailing why IP Bans aren't possible. Virtually evey person has a dynamic IP which means every so often you will gain a new IP Address if you reset the modem or do various other activities. Therefore banning IP Addresses not only won't ban problem causers but will also, potentially, ban innocent users. IP Banning isn't a possibility as much as everybody wishes it was.

Yeah, this is really inexcusable. It's one thing to delete posts describing exploits, and how to do them, but quite another to ban even discussing the existence of people using them.
Overall, the RaiderZ forums have a real propagandized feel to them, what with the hilarity of censoring the word "TERA", for example. I don't know if that's standard practice on Korean game forums or what.
Personally I think chat channels that are global in nature should just be eliminated. Allow line of site chat, party chat, and Guild chat. No world or Regional chat. This would seriously damper Gold spamming.
I'm currently working with an Indie developer and this is how they are planning to handle it.
Gold is freely trade-able between player to NPC items on the auction house (You can't sell to individuals you must place items on the AH and all events of paying 10k for a lump of coal are investigated ) between account characters and guild members who are over level 15 and have belonged to a guild for more than 20 days.
Other than that you can't give more than five gold in a 24 hour period.
I dont know about that. What stops them from naming their character "hDTGRGDGDVR" - gold spam/farm, and deleting their toons every day or two?
Yeah...It's not perfect but they can only still trade that limited about of gold so they would have to go through a HAMSTER ton of characters to sell more than a few gold. The goal is to make it a big pain in the HAMSTER so they won't bother.

They are going to need to do more than that. Some features I consider essential:
1. Right clicking on the name, selecting "report gold spam", and a Cryptic rep immediately investigating and being able to delete all valuables from the entire account(s) if found guilty.
2. An automated system that deals with those who spam the same URL over and over.
3. Placing the URL of known gold farm websites and other sources in a non user-editable name filter separate from the "bad word" filter. Include the words "gold" (and any other game currency terms). No one ever needs to use those words in global chat.
4. A ban on how much gold a toon can hold which decreases over time, say 7, 15, 30, 60 and 90 days. Toons that havent actually played the game at all or for a very short amount of time (mules, bank toons) get certified as such, and have a play scale they must climb in order to hold more funds/items. Bank toons can have a timer as well placed on how often they can swap monies/items.
5. A one week ban on using global chat.
A person playing honestly should have little trouble navigating these safeguards - yet cause quite a bit of concern in the gold farming/spamming black market. That's my prescription!

Yep all really good ideas...I think adding these things as well will help But RaiderZ has nothing nada at the moment and honestly all other PWE games are in the same boat...that's why I'm concerned about the future...bottom line as much as I'm looking forward to the game I won't be around if I'm forced to deal with RaiderZ gold spam.

I predict a definitive exodus of old school D&D folks if RaiderZ style spamming occurs in Neverwinter at launch (including many of the forumites that have those great pnp stories to tell that authenticate NWO for what it stands for, the D&D lore, and our D&D online gaming community).
Raiderz only "plan", their/b "name" scheme - has proved totally ineffective. It's akin to putting a Dixie cup at the bottom of Niagara Falls with an extensive plan to dry up the Niagara River, Lake Erie and Lake Ontario...

Yep and honestly there have long been accusations that PWE doesn't do anything about the gold spamming because they are affiliated with some of them...I pray that isn't the case it will ruin this game, though it's common in the east, western audiences are very unforgiving and rigid on their views about gold selling...Raiderz is suffering in the west because of the gold spam and Forsaken world has lost a lot of players for the exact same reason. The big question is how autonomous will Cryptic be on this when the game launches?
You know Andre this would be a excellent topic on your next podcast, just a suggestion.
So Ive been playing RaiderZ. It is also a F2P PWE game. I have never in all my years of MMO gaming seen such an infestation of Bots n gold selling Spammers. And to make matter worse, the few tools that us gamers have to deal with these maggots in an average game are absent in RaiderZ. Due to the Asian influence of the game, you cannot "click" on other players names. So the standard option of clicking and selecting Block/ignore/etc isn't an option. You have to type /b /block "name". Which while being a total pain in the rump due to the standard spelling of bot spammers (jargdnbggortm....mnbretuuybx....etc) is still effective.
But now they are getting creative and using names like ILLiLiL. Translate that to first letter only caps and it looks like this llllllllllll. Now try to figure that out when you have to type their name in order to block them. So the only thing you can do is turn off all the chat channels. Yay an MMO with no chat. Kind of defeats the purpose wouldn't you say?
I'm not sure what the UI is going to be like in NWO, but I prey to all the gods that listen that it will be a typical American UI and not a (very limited) Asian UI.
All that being said. Is this game prepaired for the all out invasion of spammers and Bots? I sure hope so for the sake of all your potential customers. Because it is so bad in Raiderz that people are leaving in droves.
If you don't have a way to stop these cockroaches at launch/beta, then at least give us decent use-friendly tools to deal with them. I am very excited about this game and I would hate to see it sink because of this. Yes I realize it is a f2p game. But endless spam and bots running around all over the place will scare off potential in-game store users just as fast as paying subscribers.

I moved your post into this thread so that we don't have two active discussions on the same topic.
My second post should confirm that the Dev Team is truly concerned about the Gold Spammers for both games. Feel free to post ideas on how to solve the issues, the Development and CM Teams are very keen on getting solutions to this problem.

I wish the RaiderZ mods felt the same way, posting about spammers, bots or hackers is a sure way to get a thread lock at the RaiderZ forums.
Active GMs are the only thing I know of that works for gold spammers. Apparently PWE doesn't feel the problem is serious enough to spend money on fixing.
This is definitely something we are concerned about, and we are coming up with measures to ensure that gold spammers are addressed. The GM team talks about this regularly! Input and fresh ideas are always welcome.

I'm really glad it's a concern, but honestly for RaiderZ at least absolutely nothing has been done so far and the gold spam has gotten so bad many of us just uninstalled the game never to return.
The exact same thing will happen for Neverwinter unless Cryptic/PWE gives us comprehensive effective tools against gold spammers by launch.

RaiderZ has taken action against gold spammers, I can promise you that (even if it does not seem like much). This thread is really about Neverwtiner's potential gold spammers, however. Please take to the RaiderZ forums if you wish to discuss gold spammers in RaiderZ.
Sorry just wanted to show in general how players are fed up of spammers. You can see their motivation in lynching the spammer. I thought it was funny and perhaps show others how strongly players feel about it.
To cause a discussion on RaiderZ was not my intention.
In short what I want to say is that if terminating spammers requires players help, they may find a few player who are ... ... lets say too willing to help in any way.
I think also that the players want to see that spammers are being dealt with. Warhammer had a global message when a spammer got banned. It was kinda funny to see it in action so often. There are many ways to involve players in the battle with spammers. Perhaps one of them could be implemented in NWO? It certainly helps morale.

For starters, making player names "clickable" and having a name click bring up all the social features such as block/ignore/report would go a very long way. It doesn't solve the problem, but it would make it considerably easier for players to mitigate and report spammers rather than trying to figure out what llllllllllll is and /blocking then taking a screenshot and emailing the screen shot in. Which is what above mentioned game is asking us to do.
clickable reporting would open the door for other options such as:
1-3 day insta-ban if reported by 30 or more players.
Blocking any and all characters created by the blocked account. (Block/ignore account rather than just player).
20 or more reports results in character becoming "flagged" for PvP and killable.
Screenshots and emails are a hassle for the average player. Clickable reporting makes the player base much much more likely to be interactive about it.
Give players a weapon that does very very moderate damage, but enough so that a lvl 1-5 spammer can be killed by a large mob of angry players. Make it a pitch-fork and torch combo and call it the Angry Mob Kit. Sounds silly, but like the snowballs would be a fun way to vent and would actualy have some effectiveness.
A 1-3 day ban for anyone spamming the exact same message in chat more than 10 times. (Gold spammers are the only ones to do this. Even annoying kids or drunk fools seldom spam the same thing more than 10 times).
Block website addresses from any and all chat aside from whispers. If you really want to tell a friend about a website, you can do it in a whisper.
Install auto-logout after 10 mins of inactivity. Exclude chat from activity. (movement required)
These are just suggestions from an old gamer, not a game programmer. Most if not all of these ideas may very well be too hard to implement. But they would at least help us combat these insects and some of them would be fun
One game, Rift I believe, when you right click/report a player. It takes a screenshot and sends it in with your report. Very nice feature. Other games might do this, I don't know for sure though.
1-3 day insta-ban if reported by 30 or more players.
Blocking any and all characters created by the blocked account. (Block/ignore account rather than just player).
20 or more reports results in character becoming "flagged" for PvP and killable.
it could be abused by a guild or a group of players that dont like certain player, but it could send instant notification to an online GM, containing locations of ppl who report with a button that allows to teleport to place in middle of all these reports and check it, would be great for bots too since players wouldnt have to bother with coordinates and stuff like that

i often spam same message many times for lfg or trading and stuff like that by just ctrl+v it in msg box, but it could require to change message after posting same thing certain number of times, reducing the number of times required to trigger this every time you are forced to change msg in certain time period(srry if its badly written its 3am and my head doesnt work anymore )
1-3 day insta-ban if reported by 30 or more players.
This is the only thing I am strongly against. When they first implemented the Report Spam feature in STO, it was abused. If players didn't like what you were saying, instead of using the ignore feature, they would get all their buddies and guild to report you for spam. I lost my chat privlidges in STO a couple times because I used to be quite vocal in answering people's questions and wasn't afraid to tell someone the correct answer when they were telling others the wrong answer.
In each case, it was looked into and seen that I had done nothing wrong in my chat logs but Cryptic/Atari never admitted to what really happened to cause me to get silenced by their "report spam" feature. In either case however, it wasn't seen that I did nothing wrong until the automatically set time had expired, so due to abuse I was forced to suffer without chatting twice as though I did something wrong.
What this did is just make it so I no longer socialize in the public chat channels as much anymore. I truly hope that there is no automated silencing or banning feature in Neverwinter. In my opinion, it should always take a GM Review before a player is silenced or banned. Always, I don't care what they're doing. If they are doing something horrible that does deserve banning but don't get handled in a timely fashion, then that is a sign that there needs to be more Staff present, not a sign that there should be automatic things handling what a person needs to handle.
