A) Somebody randomly stumbled upon that picture only after this snafu happened?
A healthy subset of the gaming community knew about this during testing and one of them knew where to find the post from Aug 16th.
Bear in mind, it is not allowed to post the actual exploit in the forums. If you seriously believe people were not aware of the exploit and waiting for it go to live, I have some great land on Mt. Hotenow to sell you.
It's possible. I'm not going to burn anyone at the stake based on it though.
Man, there's more waffle and chest-thumping in this thread then wrestling night at the Waffle House.
I fail to see how this was an exploit. People used keys to open lock boxes. People bought keys with AD. Seems like that portion was working as intended. Cryptic screwed up, not your fellow players. There's a lot of misdirected anger here, imho.
Saying that, Cryptic has (so far) royally screwed the pooch with their response. You just gave everyone who spent any amount of real life money on the lock-boxes before today a big, fat, middle finger. Your nonchalant "We don't care" attitude reeks of "We just made a ton of cash! Wwwwwwweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!" Most of us understand that money is the bottom line, but we really don't appreciate being reminded of that fact constantly.
Above all else tho, my biggest "WTF" question is simply, if this bug was reported (and we see that it was at least posted publicly) days ago, why wasn't the issue addressed before the patch? Did you not have a report of the error? Did you not have time to repair/remove it? Did you think the players wouldn't notice it?
You (Cryptic) just ran a poll about communication. I won't pretend to know the results, but if they were positive now might be the time to practice those great communication skills; And if they were negative, now might be a good time to try and improve.
The foaming at the mouth hysteria? The unfathomable cynicism? That's what.
It seems like everyone just absolutely needs to believe that Cryptic screwed them over somehow. It's pretty weird.
I think they made the right decision, all things considered. No one has shown me evidence to believe otherwise. Those few pics are pretty vague to say the least
This is exactly another problem with Cryptic. When they came out and said they were gonna advance the game based on "Community wants". Right then I knew this game was gonna get bombed at some point, because there's idiots like you out there that have absolutely no clue. There were multiple posts about the exploit SIX GOD **** DAYS AGO. The only thing that really makes sense to me at this point, is you are either actually HAMSTER, or one of the people abusing the hell out of the box exploit.
Facts are it's past the point of no return. Watch, in the next couple days when they really see the damage they've done when over 50 percent of the community is gone, they'll release some bull**** apology, and try to make some brutal compensation.

No rollback is fine, but to make statements like we were glad to see some lucky players be rewarded is absolutely HAMSTER. You shouldn't be throwing salt into the wounds of the players who paid $$$ trying to get a nightmare mount. It's disgraceful. The dude should seriously be ashamed of himself.

Really not impressed with how this was handled.
I was on during the time that the issue was happening but did not attempt to use the exploit. I acted as a responsible player should and fully expected that the issue would be fixed and those who received the benefits by using an exploit would not get to keep their ill-gotten gains.
For someone who plays by the rules and has, in the past, spent a fair bit in the Zen store, especially attempting to get an Inferno mount in the last couple days, it's very disheartening.
Despite having the Hero of the North and Feywild packs and consistently having obtained Enchanted Keys, this episode and the apathetic response from Cryptic will dissuade me from spending any more. Not worth it when the same items can be obtained easily if you happen to be on while an exploit is active.

Hi all,
During a brief period of time after Fury of the Feywild was live, the success rate for getting the elusive Heavy Inferno Nightmare Mount was higher than expected and we were glad to see some lucky players be rewarded. From this point on, we do not plan on performing any rollbacks and we've made the necessary adjustments going forward. If you received a Heavy Inferno Nightmare Mount during this time, enjoy it!
Sincerely,
Pin
The way he informed the community about what happened is intolerable.
Here's something rough that would have been a far more acceptable explanation.
During a brief period of time after Fury of the Feywild was live, the success rate for getting the elusive Heavy Inferno Nightmare Mount was higher than expected and we took immediate action by bringing down the servers for a hotfix. From this point on, we do not plan on performing any rollbacks and we've made the necessary adjustments going forward.
There, that's it. Don't call them lucky, don't be glad they did it, don't say enjoy it, just give us the facts.

Actually even though you're insulting me, I agree with you on the first 2 1/2 sentences lol... up until the part where you attack me. I've been playing MMOs since they began, and I still play table top. I know a thing or two, but I also dislike the idea of designers basing their decisions on community input.

I was one as well, and someone in zone said, "quick buy keys!" My response in zone was, "Don't do it, you could get banned." The servers came down like 2min later. It could have been much worse I guess.

When I left this morning I felt confident that you would do the right thing and perform a rollback.
I was considering spending more money on the game, thinking all the naysayers of the game were simply not giving you credit for a young and growing product. I had plans to order a package tonight, I wasn't fond of the unicorn, nor did I like the that the old $60 pack mount was non-epic. Against my better judgement I was considering buying a founders pack.
I get home and find out that there was no roll back, nothing taken from the exploiters.. and that the exploit had been known for at least 6 days on the test shard...
You'll never see another penny from me.

Shameful That it was known and still made it live.
Shameful that there was no immediete roll back.
Shamefull the way it was presented to the Playerbase as being OK to exploit.
I gfuess the small amout I spent $40 will be all I spend here.....
I will still play from time to time but will not support any longer.
Unless cryptic/pwe grows a clear conscious and fixes this.

Can we get an official answer if this rule was violated today?
(l) Using or exploiting any bugs, errors, or design flaws to obtain unauthorized access to the Service or to gain an unfair advantage over other players
I feel like players who got 10+ nightmares in less that 50 lockboxes had an unfair advantage over those who had to open 200+ just to get one.
Still wondering about this. As someone who bought many a lockbox before this event I feel like those who clearly exploited this bug (I know of know other way to phrase the situation) had an unfair advantage over me to win what we both wanted.
When I left this morning I felt confident that you would do the right thing and perform a rollback.

I was on today when it all went down. It wasn't as extreme as everyone is making sound. I was still able to talk quite effectively in zone chat without getting spammed, and while playing tonight I didn't see ANYONE riding a nightmare. *shrug*
You think they made the right decision in my opinion because you were an exploiter yourself.
You were on when it all went down but it wasn't as extreme as everyone is making it sound? I guess you forget there are 3 shards try being on dragon shard and trying to talk to a friend about feywild and not being able to FIND there reply let alone read it because it was lost in a wall of text (IN A FILTERED CHAT where trade/zone/LFG are turned off) and you don't see anyone riding nightmares? are you playing on a illegitimate server (Private Server) or something, I've seen TONS of nightmares as well as you think these exploiters aren't Hording there nightmares to sell them off slowly to maximize profits? or that they were gold seller sites that were collecting them up $30 mount for $1.25 50% chance because on average ever 5/10 boxes was a mount from how everyone was explaining that (that admitted to exploiting it)

You nailed it. If you want a cheap nightmare you know where to get it right now. Apparently Cryptic supports these gold spammers. Apparently they're "lucky." I know where I'm buying my Astral Diamonds from now on, and it's not the exchange.
not saying I wont play, I have played with good people in the game.. but i'm not spending any more money.
Not saying I will play either, I just cannot be definite about that at this point, however I have zero faith in the folks driving this train and I refuse to invest in it.

True you never did say you were leaving, only implied it with your comment about pre-ordering a different game to invest in. I rescind my earlier comment then.
They don't support gold spammer don't be silly, and don't envy the lucky HAMSTER. You are like children.
The real reason dawned to me lately, and that is, in that brief period of time, there were made zen purchases. Given the nature of the game, if they rolled back, they had to give back the money spent, actually refund buyers, and I am not sure they are even able to do that. I don't know how they get away with this the last rollback (I wasn't playing the game yet)
Whatever we deny or embrace, we belong togheter./ Pat Benatar
I have a friend who is also playing this, and he used to spend 5-7 keys per day for the mount. After spending 30+ keys he gave up, because he have spent too much and didn't get that mount, no luck at all. So he decided to just buy an epic mount in the zen store instead of wishing luck in the lockboxes. After 2 wks... A nightmare has began yesterday. 125zen each epic mount, truly unfair for him. Because of this bug, I believe that this exploit was intended to earn money, but starting from now their sales on mounts in zen store will surely decrease.

Nope. They wouldn't have to refund anything. The people who took advantage of this exploit violated the Terms of Service. All PWE has to do is give them back the keys the bought, give them back the lockboxes they used the keys on, and say "Okay, now try again with the same odds everyone else had. Oh, and don't take advantage of any future exploits or your account will be permanently banned. Have a nice day." Done. That's all they have to do, but I guess they'd rather screw over everyone who bought keys in the past.
Handling it the way they have ... this is the dumbest move I've ever seen a publisher make ...

You are insisting that it is being handled. It is not. It is being ignored.
It is though, as you said, the dumbest move I've ever seen a publisher make.
I'm a pretty solid customer for Cryptic. Played City of Heroes, Star Trek Online, and now this.
I'm having serious doubts about this company all the sudden. I've supported them through everything they've done, and defended them as a company - until this.
The thing I find troubling about this the most is that it was reported on the preview server bug forum before the patch ever hit live.
If they missed this, what else could be missed. They really need to systematically read every post in the bug forums. Just to be sure. And not rely on the popular posts with the most responses to be the ones with actual bugs.
its a pretend horse in a high fantasy video game that in the end is nothing more than a string of 1's and 0's in stored on a hardrive being displayed on a monitor after a bunch of signals flys up and down some wires.....not worth getting all bent out of shape over. Its not like your life is going to end because some people got a few extra virtual horses in a game. If your life is that disinteresting something as insignificant as this causes you stress then please fill the rest of us in on how your doing it because real life is a hell of a lot more stressful...
Christ people your acting like they just committed a horrible crime against humanity.
I want to play on the server you're on. Which shard do you use?

You should scroll through the bug report forums.
Terramak responded to literally hundreds of bug reports - it looks as if he logged on, scrolled through them, and spent what was probably his personal time responding to each and every little one, trying to find information.
Bugs get missed. That's not my problem with this issue. The problem is that they have completely failed to respond to it.
During the Caturday event, a catastrophic bug of similar proportions was missed, but Cryptic FIXED it. They rolled back the servers, they compensated EVERY SINGLE PLAYER.
What gives? Is the game not important anymore? If they had responded to this in the same manner they responded during Caturday, I'd be a happy customer, DESPITE the bugs. But I'm not, because they ****ed up this time.
Bugs can happen to anyone. I don't walk away from a company because of bugs in their software. I walk away when those bugs are misshandled.
this ****ing game is always bugged with exploits taken advantage of during sum new content launch. beta had the infamous AD exploit. don't shrug me off with you're 'lucky players' HAMSTER!! I've been a member since closed beta, Founder/Fey pack, yea I got it all. reason why they launch game updates while America is working, so exploits can 'reward' all the 3rd world poor countries. I hope this game dies!!
Comments
People are often incredibly cynical in the forums, and there is a healthy share of that in this thread as well.
Atypically, there are also a good number of generally very supportive, very level headed players commenting here that they are genuinely disappointed.
