But if they do anything else, anything that requires effort to unlock, we will get the complaint threads and it will reflect negatively to new players. (IMO)
There will always be complaint threads no matter what path they take. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Typical computer game customers. Heck, there are already a ton of complaint threads and the game isn't even out yet.
While I have no problem with that, I would like to point out that DDO had nothing but complaining threads regarding this very thing. Remember all the threads about 32pt builds at 1750 favor? The whole (I have to grind a character I do not even want in order to get ...)
I think it is best for the game to have the races/classes be fully available to the players in many forms. IE the favor unlock along with an option to just buy the thing, or be part of paid expansions, or free updates. (OOOH! Free! FREE!)
But if they do anything else, anything that requires effort to unlock, we will get the complaint threads and it will reflect negatively to new players. (IMO)
I think the biggest issue with that was that these characters were literally better, and Drow in DDO started with the 32pt build. That was there solution to characters with an Effective Class Level. In 4th Edition all races start on a level playing field, and some may disagree with this, but it is the way it should be.
For me that was one of the best qualities of 4th Edition. It allowed easier access to the other races which gave players more choices. Now someone who wants to play an unique race doesn't get burdened by the races ECL and hit dice.
Forgotten Realms is quite different in 4th Edition. Planetouched rule over many cities/states, Dragonborn have kingdoms, Nethril has returned from Shadow, etc. The players are allowed (and rightfully so) to make a character based on many of these races.
The Forgotten Realms has always allowed for the players to play more 'exotic' races. planetouched, drow, etc. have long been available as player races in the Realms.
The key thing to remember is these races are not extravagant nor unique anymore.
On Dragonborn
Agreed, some people who posted earlier in this thread are obviously not familiar with Forgotten Realms 4E. Because a whole nation of Dragonborn from Returned Abeir now exists in Faerun called Tymanther. So you could definately expect to find Dragonborn in the streets of Neverwinter.
Granted I have not read all the way through this thread yet, but I would hope that down the road they make Shade (via returned Netheril) a playable race. I would love to play a Shade and call Shade Enclave my home.
On Aasimar, I am reading a novel right now in the FR Wizards Series that features an Aasimar in the year 1374DR. So I am not sure about the source material for the earlier mentioned info on Aasimar (i.e. they are known as Deva's now or whatever). But I think that those novels are edited by WOTC so I am guessing there are still Aasimar in FR.
I am guessing that the core 5 races are going to be something like human, dwarf, elf, and then, maybe Drow, maybe Genasi, maybe Tiefling, maybe Dragonborn. All of those seem aprapos, however, I am hoping they will have an increased complexity within this core 5. Similar to the 4E Forgotten Realms source material. I.E.:
1. Dwarf
a. Gold Dwarf
b. Shield Dwarf
c. Gray Dwarf (Duergar)
2. Elf
a. Moon Elf
b. Gold Elf
c. Drow Elf
d. Wood Elf
e. Wild Elf
f. Eladrin
g. Maybe even Half-Elf in this classification
3. Human
a. Cali*****
b. Waterdhavian
c. Dalesman
These are just a few of the possibilities for humans
4. Genasi
a. Air Genasi
b. Water Genasi
c. Fire Genasi
d. Earth Genasi
5. Shade - Shades are so awesome they need no further break down!
This would be my hopes for the core 5 races. Am I asking too much?
From what I gathered there will be more choices for races (compared to the 5 classes). Human, elf, half-elf, eladrin, halfling, dwarf, dragonborn, drow, and tiefling. I may be wrong, but the drow and tiefling have been showcased so I figured they'll at least be added to the standard human, elf, dwarf classic combo.
And as far as sub-races, they seem to be gone for the most part. Elves seem to be separated (from what I read when 4e first came out) into three different races now elf, eladrin, and drow. Dwarves are just dwarves, and even the henasi are no longer divided by the classic elements.
Well I'm not sure about a lot of the races, but if they are going off of the book Gauntlgrym like ive heard there are a few races that are obvious: Elves, Drow (got to include Drizzt), Teiflings, Humans, Halflings, Dwarves, Shades (possibly since one of the main characters is part shade), Half-Elves.
Other than that I'm not really sure about the others.
I'd like for them to include Eladrin. Always liked them. Other than that I don't care too much about what else is put in there.
See, if this were the single-player game I had been hoping for, I could play my drow without annoying pre-4E purists, or I could keep my "goodly races" vision more intact.
Or, I could play on a PW with people who shared the same ideas about race restrictions or inclusiveness.
I guess Humans, Elves, Dwarves, Tieflings and Drows already in game.
Basic 4E game also needs Dragonborn, Eladrin and Halflings.
My personal favorite is Half Elves (hopefully Half Drow but not get into 4 Edition books after first books) so I am sure they will be in.
As FR game also adding planetouched(Genasi) races will be cool. Not for initial release tho'. I prefer to buy them from CStore later.
There are some people (from my DDO experiences) with strange Gnome fetish so they can add that good for nothing race later too.
Honestly I don't mind races that much. If that game will be grind for raid free game like other Cryptic games it's enough. Later Cryptic will add races naturally as they can put them in CStore.
D&D is well known to have portals that link the different worlds.... I see no reason to limit ourselves to races that exist only in Forgotten Realms. We should also have Changlings and other races ect...
1ST OFF HOPE ITS COOL TO SHORTCUT YOUR NAME SO.... IN FR THIER ARE PORTALS AND OTHER PLANES OF EXISTANCE I MEAN TRULY HOW HAMSTER WOULD IT BE TO PLAY AS A MINDFLAYER OR SVERNEBLIN OR SOME SORT OF ASTRAL PLANE DEMON OF YOUR OWN DESIGN LIKE OKAY FOR INSTANCE WE HAVE SO MANY HALF-BLOOD RACES WHY NOT ADD HALF DEMON AND TRULY ALLOW MAXIMUM CUSTOMIZATIONS AS FAR AS BULKS TAILS HORN SIZES DEFFINITELY I KNOW TIEFLINGS ARE IN BUT WE CANNOT LIMIT IT TO JUST THAT DEMONIC FORM CAN WE I MEAN SERIOUSLY WE WOULD LEAVE IT AT 2 LEGS AD 2 ARMS AND FULLY CORPOREAL? WHY I SAY GO ALL THE WAY AND MAKE THEM HUGE DEMONS DEMON DEMONS DEMOOOOOOOOOOOONS OR SOME SORT OF DEMONIC FREAK OF UNNATURAL DESIGN OTHER THAN OUR DRAGONBORN AND TIEFLING BUDDIES OF COURSE.
I've been seriously wondering whether subraces will be defined at character creation or if players will be given a selection of core races and able to run with that. For example, will we see Moon Elves and Sun Elves or just eladrin with customization that encompasses Moon Elves and Sun Elves? To be honest, unless Cryptic wants to script NPCs to acknowledge subrace in dialogue, I think the latter would be preferable, especially for us prospective content creators.

It would be interesting to have that maybe determine how npcs etc interact with your character, but then again how often does your average human (which I am reasonably assuming is the bulk of npcs since neverwinter is... a human city) encounter a moon elf or a sun elf? Does the average Neverwinter Guard know the subtle differences between the cultures (then again, this also comes from someone used to being called "DEMON!" Racist humans...)? It might work better to have it be an appearance based thing that the player can then rp as.
I don't care what they include, so long as I can play a Tiefling. Also, seriously, as far as classes are concerned, they HAVE to make Assassin a playable class.

Probably. It means more creative freedom for the players and less complication for the writers, and it has been the Cryptic way thus far.
These will never make it in the game, but I think would be cool to play:
Mul
Bjorn(Bearmen, book of races)
Leonine(Lionmen, book of races)
Thri-Kreen
Thri-Kreen exist in the Forgotten Realms, so you might see them eventually. Mul are exclusive to Dark Sun, so I can't see that happening. The other two are fan created so yeah, you're not gonna see those. So yes, you're probably right.
I'm hopeing for Goliath (or similar). Can't wait to play a large Barbarian, chewing bubble gum and kicking HAMSTER ...where's my bubblegum!
I always enjoyed playing as a Lizardfolk with my friends when we played DnD. Was the exotic member of the group, we had all the normal ones, human, elf, dwarf, dragonborn, then there was me, the lizardfolk warlock , I really enjoyed feeling like the oddity, the anomaly. Theres that perception that the lizardfolk are all primitive barbarians confined to the marsh in the south in FR, so to be able to create a character to prove otherwise would be a nice boost for me since I really enjoy role playing those types of characters.
Half-orcs are already in. I've seen them in a couple of alpha leak videos.
There were also some patch notes that we could read when we first downloaded the game before beta weekend one. One of them said that drow had been removed from the selectable races, and half-orcs had been added. But those were notes for the alpha client, not the client we're using for these beta weekends.
I'd like to see Dragonborn soon, and Devas would be awesome eventually.

Gnomes would be natural if the Devs ever decide to add some steampunk into the game.
Devas are the new Aasimar, and I would love a Deva, esp if we get to customize the full body runic markings.
What Class Are You?
half orc would also be very cool.
new races are ideal for the cash shop, so cryptic get on it so i can give you my money!
