I think the situation is a lot more nuanced than that. Firstly, yes even for GH20s the attrition rate for members is double what it used to be (it used to be 2% attrition a week, now it’s 4%). What does this mean? It means more time spent recruiting and less time spent playing if you’re trying to keep your guild population up. And why wouldn’t you, you need a social network in game to entertain your guildies.
Now take that attrition rate and the fact you aren’t just loosing new players, your also loosing seasoned vets. Your old standbys that logged in daily for years. Now you got cultural issues to contend with as your new blood (less than a year in game) out populates your old blood. So your contending with integration issues which frustrates… well everyone.
Module 18 is not going to keep the players engaged. Simply put, it’s terrible. Recycled mechanics on a recycled map, with recycled mobs. Who the F wants to kill chickens every day, move that nonsense fetch quest to summer fest.
The icing on the cake is @cwhitesidedev#9752 on live stream basically saying we can expect fewer mods per year (as if our 1 mod last year wasn’t bad enough) and the mods are going to be smaller (but higher quality).
Here is my theory. WotC bought Tuque Games. So WotC doesn’t care about this game anymore as they are as long as the content released doesn’t hurt their IP. They are milking the last dime out of Neverwinter. Unlike kaligold who thinks @cwhitesidedev#9752 is the Peter Grant of Neverwinter, I believe he is more like the Bobs from Office Space. Here to cut the fat, but we will be no better for it.

I'm an older vet player. Started in Mod 3, left at the launch of Mod 11. I came back last week to the game on a whim. Just clicked on the icon again to see what has changed. I had 9 toons at 70 from before. None of the had BiS gear but close to it. I quit before because new Mod meant all my gear was obsolete. Now I needed to grind the new gear...again. Already did it several times didn't want to do it again.
So I come back, consolidate my gear from nine toons down to four. The other two are now pack mules. Took about 5 hours to get my OP up to 80 and start the uprising campaign. Ran a few ME's but nothing else yet. I was off yesterday and figured I would get the other toons current to the uprising Spacedock. At that point I could get a better feel for which one I wanted to main.
In one day I got my DC,CW,TR to finish Undermountain. It was fun but I haven't run many of the dungeons yet, just a few Tiamat and Demo for old time sake. I'll be off for the holidays so I'll do some of the double campaign rewards and see what I do after that.
I'm a casual gamer for NWO for the moment. I play other games as well, but I can tell you this is not the same game I played long ago. So to me it is a new game with old memories. What can they do to fix it? I'm not sure but after playing a week after a several year break the maps, quests and voice overs are already repetitive.

Hi Putzboy,
Quick correction. I said fewer more meaningful mods and a faster release cadence in between. More details to follow.
And I am here to do the very best i can for the team, the game and the community. I get you have heard it all before and I don't expect your trust but moving forward there is going to be a lot more transparency with the community and a lot more engagement and I fully intend for us to evolve this world together.
Definitely agree. I fled from NW since early September. No more fun, too much expensive to have strong characters. About 4 years in NW, but after Mod.16 and worse after Mod. 17, it's no longer worth it. I suggest to play other fantasy MMORPG... now I can taste the real fun.
Laksmi ---> splendid DC Purple Knight ---> scoundrel TR Surya Namaskar ---> strong GWF Golia ---> fair GF Nausicaa ---> dark SW Pallyda ---> growing up OP
Well, running through the same or similar content for years was bad enough before the scaling, because the "rewards" were and are rather disappointing, so i'd suggest to start scaling the loot towards the actual character level.
I mean, when they can filter loot based on the character level in for example the Winter Festival, just try getting anything decent from gifts with any character below level 30, there should be a way to reward players with something usefull fitting for their character level in dungeon/skirmish runs too.
Btw. another sure-fire way to get rid of more players is to cut down the discount of seasonal sales to a level were discount coupons that can drop any time in game are way better, and of course removing all the little extras from ZEN charge promotions isn't going to help the game in the long run too...

Chris
@cwhitesidedev#9752 since you are talking about more transparency with the community are we able to get some valid explanations on why it seems like the company is reversing trends that have been in place for multiple years, and treating us like they dont even care if we play the game?
from going back to just after Mod 16 came out and the Watcher debacle. You were not here at that point so i will summarize it for you. The watcher weapons were supposedly in the game as an "Easter Egg" and we were told multiple times by both moderators and the community manager that it indeed was working and we were getting close to finding the correct trigger. Then a random patch happened and all of sudden doing the exact same thing we were doing prior was suddenly triggering it. It was obvious to absolutely everyone that they HAMSTER up and it wasn't working like they said. I do not think any suitable explanation or apology was ever given about it. This was on top of the general malaise concerning mod 16 and the upcoming mod 17 was absolutely a kick in the teeth to the player base.
Then came the hell pit where it was told that during the event we could get a Legendary mount. This was hyped months before the actual event and when the event finally rolled around, it was a great bait and switch and we couldn't get the mount. It was all of sudden we needed to do 5 of these events over a undetermined amount of time.
Legendary mount available in Zen store - decent idea if not a little overpriced except unlike every single other mount in the Zen store it was not claimable on all characters in an account but only on 1.
Black Friday sale - drastically reduced. This originally started at 50% and then dropped to 40%. Then this year all of a sudden it is 30% and nothing extra anywhere during the sale. This is less than some of the coupons we can get from just invoking.
Then finally we have the free gift week. - Note: i have not verified as i am not in game but from what friends tell me they cant find anything new today
Every single year there has been a week of free gifts from "lord nevember" and they have been pretty much exactly the same every year. None of them are super powerful and some of them are useless after the first but it was something that was a little pick me up for the season. This year it seems like those gifts are gone and instead in there place we only get the day 1 gift and a new vanity pet. Great so we get a random mount and a vanity pet that cant be used in half the game as vanity pets dont show up in dungeons.
As everyone in this thread has been stating the game seems be slowly dying and while it looks like you want to make it better the actions we are seeing happen seems to indicate the exact opposite of your plan.
It's not fun anymore most toon's getting nerfed and we have to deal with it...it's getting to be like a competition now... and very technical not like a "GAME" just wish it went back (way b4 this) sad...to see when lots leave..b
I think the game is still fun for newbies (up to level 70 anyway), those who really, really like lengthy grinds or for players who have BIS gear or near BIS gear who can successfully farm Astral Diamonds and traverse some of the new content - until they get bored with that as well...
But for those of us who don't live for the grind, have surpassed character level 70 and the related quests and haven't mined AD's or bought our way into great gear it amounts to slowly amassing enough AD's to improve our characters or just replaying content we've already done a dozen times just to stay with the game.
Speaking for myself only, I'm certainly not going to spend real world currency on items that will probably become obsolete within the next mod or two, even in content totally unrelated to the new content release - I've already done that a time or two and have learned the futility of doing that.
If I want to buy gear to successfully play Sharandar, the Dread Ring, Tyranny of Dragons, Chult, Barovia or whatever and can do that - life is good... However if I buy gear to successfully play any those areas and before I've completed it I find my gear that used to be good enough, just isn't good enough any more I'm not about to repeat my mistake and buy more stuff just to be able to successfully play in areas where my existing gear used to be good enough.
I think that has been one of the major problems with Neverwinter, not the release of new content or the fiddling with character, companion or other item stats in that new content, but with the alteration of character and other item abilities in previous content that has nothing to do with the newly released content.
No one wants to repeatedly throw good money after bad because what they have, maybe what they've purchased with their hard earned currency suddenly 'isn't good enough' in content where it used to be, especially when they suspect it's just going to happen again.
Before the system changes, i had some fun looking at the feats and thinking "what would my character choose" i would reread the history i wrote for them and it would guide my decision. Sure i wasn't optimal, but i was good enough, and the system was forgiving enough that i could just play and have fun even if i wasn't a Meta Megamind. Now, i can't do that, i only have 2 choices and i am thinking more about the numbers, i can't choose the powers i unlock and it feels like all the choice, spice and variety has been stripped out, no matter what i pick i am weaker but dodging is slower because i can do it only twice and there are many more controllers in mobs.
so now i am a weaker character with fewer options fighting more obnoxious and tougher enemies with long power cool downs and and the only way to get stronger is gambling with lock boxes to get enchantments upgraded and i am just not as motivated anymore.
I am not going anywhere but i am not trying to get the most out of my character because it will all only be taken when i play old content. i am just piddling around and hoping the game gets good again. Mod16's hostile design has made me dread updates cause sometimes they just take away powers i had built a rhythm with and replace them. Warlock keeps getting boned when it used to be an absolute blast to play. I feel like the devs don't want me to get to attached to things because they are just going to take them away, my characters feel less my own and cookie cutter. Now the only outlet for self expression is the appearance system, and even them my options are limited by the amount of AD i am willing to spend. all of this put together has left me playing for shorter periods and the novelty and charm that useed to be in the game is being stripped out.
New intro with makos is weaker than the old one with wilfred, early quests are truncated and cut down to be almost perfunctory and all the character of the old quests is on some cutting room floor. Efficient well crafted lines that gave gothwin, a bit character some personality are also gone and it makes me wonder what story beats are going to be discarded later.
Ego etiam cupo recrari et amari diu post mortem meam I too wish to be recreated, and to be loved long after my death.

I remember this well - it was a series of lies from the developer team. The Watcher Set WASN'T in game, it was a lie. We were lied to repeatedly. And no apology was given. This was such a bad move on NWO part.
I agree with the writer of this thread. Before Mod 16 game was ok and fun for the big majority of the players. Mod 16 destroyed the game for us. That's the reason why so many players left the game (me among them). People play the game to have fun, not to suffer get frustrated, for FUN. So if people get angry and frustrated they just leave for other game. As simple as that. I am not going to elaborate why this game is not fun anymore because I think it's obvious and everybody knows the reasons. Game was doing okay so why change it? For a couple of forum-fools saying that it's too easy?? Why? Don't you see this system is destroying the game?
edit: What is that? I posted a long comment. Took me 15 Minutes. Had to edit some typos. Now somehow all is gone. Not the text, the whole post.
Nothing works here anymore.
That was spontaneous, pouring the heart of an player and guild leader since closed alpha who spend some money in the game and now his guild and friendlist are empty. I will not post it again.
Too make it short. If you just have 1-2 hours daily for this game, it is too much to do und too much frustration. If you are in random queue, nobody knows the tacitcs anymore and relie on DPS. Fail horribly and you get nothing for it. 30 Minutes to an hour gone for nothing. And for your money you get not much anymore. Before I spend 20$ monthly to support the defelopers, not because I needed to. Not I would have to invest much more.
Here is my theory. WotC bought Tuque Games. So WotC doesn’t care about this game anymore as they are as long as the content released doesn’t hurt their IP. Oh, thank you for calming my frustation about the game and the somehow deleted post. That sounds nice. ATM I spend 40$ per month on a D&D clicker game and have more fun with that low stuff than with a full grown MMO
Everything was cleaned up to (supposedly) make it easier for someone to do something in developerland, but it feels largely soulless to me now.
The stat system bears no resemblance to the stats of any D&D game that I have ever played. I mean, Clerics that want to go DPS need intelligence? Heck, Paladins that want to deal more DPS need intelligence because their melee weapons deal radiant, not physical damage,
And where in the game do they make clear what stats the classes might want to focus on? Oh, that's right. Nowhere. You are just supposed to know that if you want your Ranger to deal more DPS then they have to have a higher strength.
Skill nodes are just dumb now. You do not get anything special out of them, just some vendor trash that usually covers the cost of the skill kit (so using those is going to pay for itself at all but the lowest level, even with some failures) and maybe a quartz or pearl or whatever.
Treasure chests are similarly blah. I can not recall opening a chest and finding some bit of 'real' treasure since mod16. It's some potions and those same quartz, pearls, etc. Doing a dungeon run? Few stop to open a chest, and that should be a hint that something is wrong with this picture.
They scale down a level 80 to level 20 to run a dungeon, and then "reward" them at the end with some level 20 junk? Not even anything worth using an appearance library slot on. Just a generic piece of level 20 loot. Dungeons could at least reward some unique appearance items.
As it is, most everything seems to be invested in those top-end dungeons. Meanwhile, I am slowly grinding my way to getting gear that would allow me to join in on some older dungeons that people may not even bother with any more.
Heck, I am still trying to grind out gear to get myself into the suggested level for Tales of Old stuff. When I saw the required IL for that Hell Pit thing or whatever it was, I didn't even bother thinking about doing it.
But while I am on the subject, and getting back to the soul of the game, why would Neverember allow some demons or devils to set up shop in his city?
Some random monsters show up to celebrate the Masquerade of Fools? Whatever. No evil intent there.
Some demons show up to set up a soul-gambling operation? Sorry, that sucks the "RP" right out of the whole thing. Some players won't care, but some will. Every time I passed it I could only think about how dumb it was. "Oh, look. A little corner of Hell right here in Neverwinter, and not one person seems to care. I wonder how many citizens of the city lost their souls today because the devils made them an offer that seemed too good for them to pass up".
Just so much stuff that makes the game not feel like D&D.
And to make it even worse, I would often refer to the Neverwinter wiki for the game to look stuff up, but that seems largely abandoned now. I wonder how much longer it might be before it gets taken down.
I agree that this game has bigger age people. We have jobs, families. I am 35 years old and i cant grind stupid events anymore.
I want to enter in game and do 1 or 2 good dungeons with my friends. See a new stories, new adventures, travel inside the world, see landscapes, relax, maybe sometime pvp to kill someone if i feel that way , BUT i cant grind anymore like when i was 18, i cant be online all the time, everyday, i cant fish, I cant catch chickens, or whatever stupid events propose, i just want to play a good story dungeon.

This game has many much older age people than you may think. There are many retired, grandpa, grandma, here. 35 is young.
*** The game can read your mind. If you want it, you won't get it. If you don't expect to get it, you will. ***
I concur with what everyone here has said. But to echo, MOD 16 destroyed the game. “class balance”, scaling and core mechanic changes have made the game very uninteresting. I went from 6 or 7 toons that were maxed out down to one - because I’m just not that interested anymore. Now I run around on a DC spamming at-wills - sure is fun! I used to pull groups through T9, FBI, MSPC - I didn’t care what their IL was. With scaling and the changes to DC I won’t go near that stuff now.
I have always wondered why a game that takes away players' progression can survive in the long run. The irony is that's exactly what their business model is about; bait and switch. It's no wonder the game is at the position its in now. Nerf this, nerf that, tweak this, break that all for trying to generate revenue.

Its like having a part-time job that you don't hate, but you don't really love it, so you don't have much enthusiasm for it.
Add the fact that time vs progression/reward is unbalanced, means it feels like the job you are doing doesn't really pay you much money in return.
That's how I feel
I mean, when they can filter loot based on the character level in for example the Winter Festival, just try getting anything decent from gifts with any character below level 30, there should be a way to reward players with something usefull fitting for their character level in dungeon/skirmish runs too.
Btw. another sure-fire way to get rid of more players is to cut down the discount of seasonal sales to a level were discount coupons that can drop any time in game are way better, and of course removing all the little extras from ZEN charge promotions isn't going to help the game in the long run too...
Not to mention the changes to the free gifts:

from going back to just after Mod 16 came out and the Watcher debacle.
No one wants to repeatedly throw good money after bad because what they have, maybe what they've purchased with their hard earned currency suddenly 'isn't good enough' in content where it used to be, especially when they suspect it's just going to happen again.
so now i am a weaker character with fewer options fighting more obnoxious and tougher enemies with long power cool downs and and the only way to get stronger is gambling with lock boxes to get enchantments upgraded and i am just not as motivated anymore.
I too wish to be recreated, and to be loved long after my death.
That sounds nice. ATM I spend 40$ per month on a D&D clicker game and have more fun with that low stuff than with a full grown MMO
I want to enter in game and do 1 or 2 good dungeons with my friends. See a new stories, new adventures, travel inside the world, see landscapes, relax, maybe sometime pvp to kill someone if i feel that way , BUT
i cant grind anymore like when i was 18, i cant be online all the time, everyday, i cant fish, I cant catch chickens, or whatever stupid events propose, i just want to play a good story dungeon.
