Yep I can see it for Co it's not supported that well, STO is different though and I'm betting NW will be the same way..thing is it's easier to complain on the forums than to go through the process.
Put up or shut up- screenshot of the email where they reviewed your case. Black out the identifying information, and I'll say I'm impressed with them handling it.
The one time I was muted, I DID send a very polite ticket with the chat log and a supporting screenshot, nothing was done. Don't assume much more, you're only making yourself seem less credible.
Smacky, the guy next door to me plays STO and the result is the same. Get silenced for RP, chatting, or saying something like 'I think Kirk was a bit more egotistical than Picard'... then file a ticket, and you get a copy paste form email about how the system works and basically why they created it, no personal appeal from an employee.
Is his name really smacky? it's odd because there is a guy on my block every calls slappy.
Anyway I really would be interested in seeing what that "RP chat" actually contained. "I didn't do nuttin" is rarely the case guy.

Right, I have no experience with that game. Who knows, maybe he did get it repealed, maybe not. I do know one person from Champs that got their chat ban removed, but it came with a disclaimer, mentioning that it was a one-time thing done out of good faith. The CM had to contact a GM to remove the ban.
It does more good then harm. I am happy to not have all the spam and trolling that happens in most F2P games. Go look at Age of Wushu's chat and let me know if you like the alternative.
So, if a troll bothers YOU then they should be muted from interacting with anyone in the game?
I dislike hamburgers. Five of my friends dislike them also. Hamburgers are now banned.
Am I making sense.
Granted, the sytem allows people to ignore the people that they see eating their hamburgers in peace, but trolling is more akin to trying to shove that hamburger down someone's throat.
Yeah, their should be a penalty for acting like a jerk.
This system is not a system that I would use if I were designing a game, but hey, I'm not designing a game.
I do know that my occasionally sarcastic but mostly troll-free self has never been banned by the system, though, despite playing CO and STO off-and-on since their launches.
If you treat people decently, stick to using global chat for game-related conversation, and maybe occasionally use a whisper to answer a question rather than global, then I doubt that you will have much trouble.
Maybe there will be issues if you get involved in some inter-guild drama or something, but again, how much of that drama is a result of your attitude?
Not anyone personally, just a question for everyone to ask themselves if there is an issue (of course, I doubt that many people are interested in this self-assessment... Sure, you called someone a <censored> and a <filtered>, but that in NO WAY warrants that you should have to answer for that).
As far as the whole "someone talked about this and they got silenced thing", sure.
Yet here this thread is, and many others like it in STO and CO, and no one here or there has been banned or otherwise disappeared from the face of the Earth.
If such a silencing occurred, I would guess that it had more to do with the language that they used in their discussion of the issue than the discussion itself. There is a big difference between saying "I am not a fan of the system because it is open to potential abuse by griefers" and "This system is <censored>. A bunch of <censored> can get together and <censored> me over. <censored>!", possibly including some more insults in there directed at the company, the devs, and/or the GMs.

Some people call me that, yeah.
There's a guy I know in Champions that hosts regular costume contests. I've never once seen the guy get out of line, and he's been chat banned many times. You know by who? The same people who like to attend his costume contests and make their characters really big with aura effects all over them, and they spam powers that not only obscure, but distort your vision. You know, trolls.
There have been cases of "I didn't do nuttin." I know another guy who keeps zone chat off because he doesn't want to get chat banned. Only speaks in private channels and in local chat. He got chat banned while RPing. Normal RP. It happens, dude.
After the days of "WoW was the first MMO" trolls, P2Win trolls, i'll take the risk of a bunch of no-lifer friends who get together to ignore people. I rarely have anything to say to most people in MMOs anyway. Chat is next to useless with how fast it moves with trolls and people always asking the same things ("There is only a guild bank??", "How to train professions?", "How do i stealth?", etc, etc.)
For the record, i've also reported as spam two gold sellers, even though, yes, selling gold here is pointless (i'm guessing you'll just get hacked if you do try and buy it).

Agree with this 100% Folks that have been here awhile know I have the tact of a Mack truck sometimes, but after a scary amount of hours in CO and STO I have only been CB'd once at it lasted all of two hours before the reversal. I can see how folks could disagree, but as I said give me that over what it could be.

Yes, you should be able to have someone not appear in your chat box for bothering YOU. Ignore is a great feature itself. No arguments. However, it should not be up to you and 4 others to 'vote' someone into a mute for 24 hours. You are not a GM. If someone is being that bad, a GM should be the one silencing them.

Imagine if a waiter at your diner said 'we know that the potatoes usually give customers food poisoning. We've had lots of complaints. So if you don't want food poisoning, just eat around your potatoes'.
Maybe there will be issues if you get involved in some inter-guild drama or something, but again, how much of that drama is a result of your attitude?
And still, you should be able to ignore me if 'my attitude' is ever a factor. That should have no bearing on how I am able to interact with my friends. You are not the GM.

Go ahead and keep thinking that. I promise, your tune will change like all others.
I like the chat-ban system. If somebody is so obnoxious that five people all put him on ignore, zone chat is probably better off without that person for the next 24 hours.
I agree this could be used for griefing, but the appropriate remedy is to punish the griefers, not scrap the system.

What it could be: You see a gold seller? Right click, Ignore. You never hear from that guy again. Where's the problem with this? Why attach something that can be exploited to hurt the players to it?
If 10 people have found you that annoying all at once you need to be banned.
Doesn't have to be at once. It could be one person ignoring you each month for however many months. Once that final ignore is counted, you're chat banned.
If 10 people have found you that annoying all at once you need to be banned.
By all means, I find you annoying and I can find 10 friends that will agree with me.
I am sorry, your logic fails. Anyone who thinks this is a good idea is silly. I can find 10 people in game any day to assist.
You already have the ability to ensure that no messages from this person reach you. You have no further right to determine what communication they have after that fact.
If 10 people have found you that annoying all at once you need to be banned.
Some people are not understanding: You, minding your own business, can be chat-banned by griefers. Get it? You can be minding your own business and some doofus and his buddies can all /ignore you and you will get the 24 hour ban. And you didn't do anything at all! So the person above me here thinks if 10 people are annoyed by you standing around doing nothing can get you banned, then they're okay with that. Puhlease!
If 10 people have found you that annoying all at once you need to be banned.
Basically and all this time I have only seen a relativity small group of folks complain about it, honestly as easy as gamers get outraged all forums would have page after page of WTF cryptic threads if it were truly widespread.
But I also recognize that if it happened to you all you can really see is that it happened to you.

Has there ever been any actual testing of this claim or the other claims about the chat ban system? If so, could you put up a link?

We've had someone run a test- I can look and have some others assist in finding it. The official word by Cryptic is that it takes a 'certain number' but they've never released that official number. Ignores are worth less demerits than report spams, we do know that.

This was told to us by one of the Community Managers a long while back (StormShade). I'm trying to find the post, but after the PWE forum merger, all posts prior to that became posted by "Archived Post" so it's hard to find things. I know, sounds convenient, right? :P I am looking though.

well that sucks then but still...it is not the end of my world for me to not chat in a video game chat box for 24 hours but they should make it more fair, they should have to ignore you within at least a certain time spam and they need to have a good reason like you better have spammed or something.

And there are no gold sellers in this game. There haven't been any since 2009 for any Cryptic games.
I've seen one in /zone chat so far in NWO and 1 in an email. I right-clicked and reported them both times, but they do exist. Thankfully very rare though.

Even so as I said it would be easy enough to verify without all the archive digging...which is a pain since the merger.

You have GM's constantly monitoring these forums. If we were so full of it, they'd be in here to silence our false information and delete or lock out this thread.
Or perhaps lock out this thread to keep the word from spreading. We've seen them lock out news page comments when a lot of people had problems with the broken content they were releasing.

A sinister part of me wants to encourage this... Especially since it's opening week for this game and this feature should be known.
But that's just wrong, man.
Even though certain people have been quad-Accounting and done it.

This system does seem to have a ton of holes. Yikes. It's one of those ideas that looks good on paper but then you carry it out and chaos can result.
