Apparently someone mentioned this system in Neverwinter. A GM immediately chatbanned the person. Sadly, this is a 'feature' of Cryptic games- if you're not familiar.
Someone doesn't like what you're saying? They put you on ignore. You get a handful of them in a short time? You can't chat for 24 hours- and nothing less. A full 24 hours, on all Cryptic engine games through PWE. No in-game email, PM's, nothing. And no one will unmute you if you send a ticket. You'll get a copy/paste email from Cryptic/PWE about how the system works and why it's 'working as intended'.
So, that means the trolls and greifers (which are common in Free-to-Play games, to a frightening degree) will exploit and use this as they have in the other Cryptic games.
So, if you're new to this company's games, then you need to know about this and how stupid of a system it is... and that GM's are muting people for mentioning it.
Um, call me slow, but I think it sounds like a great system. Unless I'm missing something - how do the Greifers and trolls exploit it?
It is a great system but people who get banned trolling usually come on the forums with a complaint similar to this. I just wish they would take it one step further and ban forum access for offenders as well.
Let's just say you and five friends dislike what I said. You put me on ignore, which eliminates you from hearing me. But, because of that- I can't chat with ANYONE for 24 hours at all. You and your friends have the power to 'vote people into silence'. Sadly, RPers are usually the targets of this. Greifers will mob together and 'ignore' or 'report spam' on someone so they are silenced for 24 hours. If you don't think this is a bad system, go over to the Champions Online forums and search for 'Chat Ban System' and look at the MASSIVE number of people silenced for no reason, some of which were not even in the game.
Edit:
If you think this is a 'great system', please share your @handle with me and let me show you how it works.
Edit: I've had this happen to me once. I logged in, five people ran to me, and without me saying a word I was silenced for 24 hours.
And there are no gold sellers in this game. There haven't been any since 2009 for any Cryptic games.
Ohhhhhh. I see. That does suck. Dunno what the answer would be. I wonder if it works for alt characters, like I don't like what you say so I log in all of my characters quickly and ignore you. Yeesh.
Um, call me slow, but I think it sounds like a great system. Unless I'm missing something - how do the Greifers and trolls exploit it?
I imagine a group of them arrange to all /ignore someone at the same time. If this system is purely automated when it is open to such easy abuse (depending on the number of /ignores needed) then I am surprised that it was implemented.
While it would cut down gold sellers very quickly I should imagine, this is irrelevant given how worthless Gold is in this game and AD can be legitimately transferred to ZEN anyway.....

with any system there is a potential for abuse. I would LOVE to see the actual numbers. We get this on STO also.
I hate the chat anyways, it's so spammy. The signal to noise ration isn't in my favor. I'd suggest finding a good guild and using some sort of voice chat system. But ya, I can see how this would be really annoying.

I actually had it happen to me, a quick support ticket and it was found that I said nothing offensive or against the rules, I was reinstated, the next day I received an apology letter email from the fleet leader informing me that the guild members who did it had action taken on them by Cryptic...he also kicked them out of the fleet
Mine is in my sig go for it but get ready for the consequences, in fact threating to do it on the forums could be actionable.
Um, call me slow, but I think it sounds like a great system. Unless I'm missing something - how do the Greifers and trolls exploit it?
Whenever you get ignored in the game, it puts a "demerit" on your account that does not go away. It doesn't have to be X amount of ignores in a short span of time. You can get ignored today, tomorrow, next week, next year. When you hit the magic number, you can't chat, at all, for 24 hours.
You know that "Report Spam" selection when you right click someone's name? That's like a super-ignore that grants extra demerits. Meant to be used only on Gold Sellers, but nobody is ever told that.
How do they exploit it? Let's say you start talking in zone chat about how people who make their characters named Drizzt Do'Urden are uncreative and stupid. Drizzt Do'Urden@sampleplayer sees this, tells his guild to Report Spam on you or just Ignore you, and suddenly you can't talk for a day.
It's completely exploitable, and in my experience, no one ever gets punished for exploiting it. I've known people who got a 24 hour chat ban DURING his 24 hour chat ban. Red flags, anyone? That shouldn't be possible. But since it's a player-run system, it is. No GM involvement whatsoever.
Also, contacting a GM won't help you. They'll say that's how the system works, and that's that. Wait out your time. Have fun having all your friends who send you private messages thinking you're ignoring them.
Edit: Apparently that last paragraph might not be the case in this game.
and that GM's are muting people for mentioning it.
I am skeptical of this. I've mentioned the system in General before and not been banned.
How do you know this was GM action?
"Participation in PVP-related activities is so low on an hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly basis that we could in fact just completely take it out of STO and it would not impact the overall number of people [who] log in to the game and play in any significant way." -Gozer, Cryptic PvP Dev
Oh, and to anyone that thinks this system is a bad idea, don't count on it ever being removed. It's a part of all Cryptic games, from what we've been told, and they can't just turn it off.
okay...so instead if acknowledging the facts you show your true colours. Very glad this system is in place, next time think before you troll in game.
I am not silenced in game, sir. But nice try making an assumption when someone came to share information with you. There are no 'facts' to acknowledge. You think it is a good system. It sounds like it, on the surface. But players from other Cryptic games have been begging to eliminate this from the start. Give it time. You'll say something someon dislikes, and find yourself chatbanned again.

What he's saying is that you could be muted just because you disagree with him. You don't have to be trolling anyone to get a chat ban in the game... that's what he was displaying with that post.

No Biff I get that, what I'm saying is if you send a report on the chat ban asking for them to review the log and it's appealed, it doesn't go so well for the ones who reported you. That's what he's missing or refusing to acknowledge I think.
This is a Dungeons and Dragons game, one that is nearly guaranteed to be heavy in Role Players. Imagine, if you will, a system that allows a group of bored twelve year olds to completely halt EVERY SINGLE RP session that they see. Anywhere in the Game. Any time they want. For 24 hours. Welcome to the wonderful world of Chat Ban.

This is odd, considering that since 2010 this has happened for NO ONE EVER in a Cryptic game.

I gotcha. The problem is that he comes from a game where nothing is ever done about it.

Been playing Cryptic games for a bit over four years now. And I have not seen a review of ANY-ONES Chat Ban in a good two years or so. At one point it was common enough, but recently, all I have heard is "Working As Intended"
Me, I was waiting to see how the GM's handled this issue before posting anything on the forums here, because if the GM's are working overtime, checking all complaints, it might just work out. If they loose interest and just let it ride it will truly suck.

Smacky, the guy next door to me plays STO and the result is the same. Get silenced for RP, chatting, or saying something like 'I think Kirk was a bit more egotistical than Picard'... then file a ticket, and you get a copy paste form email about how the system works and basically why they created it, no personal appeal from an employee.

Yep I can see it for Co it's not supported that well, STO is different though and I'm betting NW will be the same way..thing is it's easier to complain on the forums than to go through the process.

Please review my campaign and I'll return the favor.
Again, let me emphasize: GM's are muting people for mentioning it.
This. If anything, it works to silence griefers and trolls. Don't respond to them and just /ignore them, then they are banned.
I dislike hamburgers. Five of my friends dislike them also. Hamburgers are now banned.
Am I making sense.

By all means, this is just ONE GAME's forums on the chat ban system.
You'll have to ignore anything posted by Lucyinspacewithdiamonds...
