The DIY MMORPG: How The Neverwinter Foundry System Could Change Online RPGs
"By handing over content creation to the players, Neverwinter could breathe new life into a stale MMORPG market"
"Cryptic and Perfect World will be able to dodge one of the most deadly bullets in the genre by allowing users to do much of the post-release content generation for them. Since approved user-generated content will be integrated into the game organically, the developer won?t be under quite so much pressure to add new pieces to the game, and if the Foundry really takes off it could spawn all sorts of replay value, adding years of content to the title."

And considering the sliding scale of XP/Items that drop randomly without exploit based on the difficulty of the crafted module, it won't get the nose turned up by elitists or the complaint the reward are not there like some people mention for the Foundry in STO. Heck, this model might replace the STO Foundry eventually if it ports over to that setup.

For Sure Truth, they are breaking all the stops with regard to neverwinter, that will port back to STO UGC, if not more will happen, with bigger ideas outside the dev teams, community will come up with A grade ideas, lets hope that Devs will support and implement, when someone comes up with something fresh.

That they are even considering making PvP a Foundry option with random maps shows all the community could be involved. That is considering though, not guaranteed. Allow me to retrieve the quote:
Interesting! I wonder... would any of these opinions change if the Foundry allowed for PVP map creation?
I'm not a big PVPer myself, but all of my best pvp memories come from games where everyone didn't have the map layout already engraved in their memories. If there was a large library of pvp maps available, that would definitely entice me to do more than just "dabble" in pvp.

Im not a pvp'er but since hearing this in a dev vid on foundry i had this pvp idea circling my head, but im thinking Cryptic might already be onto this for PVP so we shall see.
I already have some wicked ideas for foundry missions. All wich include large scale massacres, but the waiting is eating me from the inside. It's been what 9 months ?

Depends when yu started counting. More like 2 years if you were with the original announcement of 09-23-2010.
Now, if you're referring to the transition of co-op to MMO/PWE taking over Cryptic from the-publisher-that shall-not be-named, that was in early October 5, 2011, so that is approaching one year. A lot of transitions happened the following month in November 2011, (which made me decide this little niche product wasn't just going to be written off and caused my active involvement in the community,) so there's that date.
So, we're hitting the one year date since the transition announcement soon, longer if you were around in 2010.
While changing the appearance of any creature is possible for mission created content, changing the character PC image map and having animations that work with it is a whole other modeling issue as well as opening up a whole legal "right of "them" to change my character" when it is not a sanctioned build by the company mod. The liability would be tested as some could consider legal action should the worst happen.
Could you imagine if that was allowed (and it could be done BTW) and somehow the revert feature failed and there was no custom backup of the PC's original model?
Now, if Cryptic/PWE does permit this and has a guaranteed way to revert the character as they were pre-module entry, and it works with the character's stuff as if did pre-module image change, then I think it's a great idea.
But a custom monster image with limited animations and is a one-time enemy is a heck of a lot different than a PC controlled moving custom weapons character and also assuming he or she can go back to original form of course.
You do realize that both NWN and NWN2 allow a mod author to change the appearance of the player to any in-game model, right? Also, many MMO's do the same thing for story purposes such as Champions Online as well as Guild Wars 1 & 2. Actually in GW2 there is a player skill that transforms other players into Moa Birds.
I'm simply asking if NWO will come with the same tech. These legal issues you seem to think are there, are just not. Keep chasing butterflies...
Just to prove my point some more This is a Cryptic made mission in a Cryptic game that does EXACTLY what I was asking about. I would like to know if the Foundry will allow us to do the same.

Yes the tech is there, but it's not clear if it's released on the Foundry level and if it's allowed with the new more powerful Foundry powers without some conflict.
Of course NWN and NWN2 having persistent world servers could do this with no risk to outside data tables.

That would be why I asked. I'll wait for a response from Cryptic.
Not at the moment, but our engine obviously supports that kind of thing so I could see it happening at some point. Not sure where this would sit on our list of priorities though...

Okay,

What was being mentioned here was about open world foundry missions instead of instanced. What is being questioned is if existing Foundry missions will allow the PC model temporarily to be altered. With the Foundry changes, while it technically can be done, whether it works OK on a PC vs an NPC model I'm not 100% on and also am waiting for a Dev clarification if it's available, not done but available or wish-listed.
(And sorry for that weird post before. Apparently when I post I have to refresh the page or it may not show what looks like what posted in the first place; but since this only happened with Quick Reply, I'll use the old-fashioned quote, multi quote and post reply options.)
"Another thing that was mentioned was traps, so the ability to provide environmental dangers to the player may be possible"
"Along with the regular Project, Story, Map, Dialogue, and Costume options there was a new one labelled “Icon”. Here the author can have custom icons for items used in the mission. An example would be to have an item named “Zorbane’s Sword”. Eventually this may lead to NPCs wielding these weapons but how much gets implemented for release is yet to be seen."
Finally the question everyone wants to know the answer to. When’s closed beta? Unfortunately we couldn’t a more specific answer other than “2012”. Good news is that the end of 2012 is coming up soon

Don't get your hopes up. It is just the polite way of saying, "the beta is coming soon!" Where context of soon is anywhere from months, years, centuries ever sun ages.

They're probably waiting until real winter hits. You know, with snow all that "fun" stuff outside. That's when we'll be inside and able to focus all our excess energy on beta testing... yeah, that's it!

"For those who prefer to make their own monster, you could twist and distort an existing creature beyond recognition and call it a new race, if your story demands it. You'll even be able to make slight color variations among members of the model, to make it seem like a believable set. Turning a monster into your own creation looked like a simple matter of stretching and squishing like a doll."

One thing: They are in Los Gatos, CA near San Francisco (relatively speaking,) CA where the weather does not get like that. Can it snow? Sure, but mostly in the mountains.
But this is not a "Buffalo, NY" Marketing strategy thing.
Only a 4 hour drive for me. Time to round up all the CA "Patiently Waiting Players" and show up at their doorstep and demand they "flip the switch!" b:victory

Now if only it was that simple...
*Daydreams of things being as simple as flipping a switch*
Oddly enough that sounds very much like D&D.
DM, "The door breaks your shoulder when you ram it, the surounding walls smolder when you cast fireball, 'knock' has had no effect, the axe bounces off the door and slices off your finger, twnty-four lockpicks snapped trying to open the door...got anything else?" *player searches the opposite wall and finds a tiny hard to see level on the wall*
Player, "what's this guys?" *Other player runs over and flips the switch and the door opens*
... *Every player facepalms*
