Guilty of my main once and somewhat still being a black redder (but now it's dark grey and light purple/white).
Also guilty of her being a weredemon. Because combining the two most common races on CO is cool.

The devs heard us extolling the virtues of the darkest black plus a single other color with maxed glow!
I made a hero that looks like that a while back named Digital Man, and I got a lot of positive comments about him while playing, so people do like the look.
Now there is going to be hundreds of Digital Man's every where, but that bike would be great for him.
See? All the pictured posted by players are the best example of how you combine Red-and-Black in a good way to make a good costume!
With a good Balance and the addition of a Third or Fourth Color without being Obnoxious about it!

Does Digital Man have a sidekick named Analog Kid? (+2112 geek points if you get the reference...)

Does anyone know where it stemmed from? Guessing Carnage or Darth Maul may have had an influence...
That is a good question.
Me personally I always liked black/red combo in RL before I even ever heard of Carnage and definately before I even seen a pic. of Darth Maul (sometime last year. Never watched much star wars. Got to the intro with the scrolling and first scene of one and next thing I remember was the credits. Dang sleep.). It's just one of those color combinations that caught my eyes given that those were my two favorite colors and then combined, loved it.
Hi all, I'm a Blackredder. In fact, after the Dress a Dev contest, I've requested my custom forum title to BE "Blackredder". I think that makes me both a winner AND a loser.
Too many to post here, but my Blackredder toons in comics at: co-comics.webs.com
And of course, Lord Gar the Live Producer is also a Blackredder at heart. This is like when I found out Vin Diesel plays D&D, I was chanting, "One of us! One of us!" lol
Does anyone know where it stemmed from? Guessing Carnage or Darth Maul may have had an influence...
I think Carnage, Darth Maul, Dracula, Satan...even M. Bison have had an influence. But even then, it was because there were already color associations with black/red.
I remember in Art History class there's such a thing as color associations. Black is authority, mystery, etc. Red is danger, passion, etc. But that's not the start, either.
I think it's to do when we were Cavemen. Black was the night, the darkness where BOTH predators and prey hide. Red was blood and fire, which was danger and power.
Looking out for these colors may be a survival pro-tip. We look at Black because, in the darkness may be a tiger or dinner. And Red because maybe somebody died there, run!
Those that didn't pay attention to these telltale signs, these "red flags", tended not to survive, so they didn't breed basically us. From them, we got this Black/Red hardwiring.
Thus ends my thesis on The Evolution of Blackredders: Survival of the Fugliest.
Black and red is a very powerful and very old color combination. Used frequently in art, including comic books.
Anyone who complains that it's used in costumes was apparently living somewhere under the rock.
The whole thread started as a very arbitrary complaint, but few accusations are especially hilarious. Especially considered that CO is a superhero comic book inspired game:
Two in one picture. The one on the right could have looked good, maybe, if he had taken the time and effort to choose better colors. But instead, he just picked black, red and white. Also, notice how he the bracers and collar have the Broken detail texture, but the shoulder pads don't. Those are signs of laziness.
The one on the left is a truely extreme example. The character itself is all black, with no visible features, except for the eyes. The sole concept behind this costume appears to be "Look, Psi pieces!"
Except not, because costume on the left, this one with PSI pieces, has actual classic comic book feel. Flat pitch black body with only few details in it, like eyes, was frequently used in classic comic books. Mutant Sunspot from X-Force is a good example, but the whole trick was used mostly for cosmic powered creatures.
Nothing wrong with said costume. It could be better, however, with power flight TP and Kirby dots.
The fact that that you see little wrong with costume on the right, but you are jumping at the costume on the left says something about this thread's legitimacy.
Don't use only the darkest black at the very bottom of the color palette.
That one is a negative color, so dark it actually makes certain transparent parts invisible. It is best used for shading or "void" effects. But for a black surface, the second darkest black is dark enough.
As above, pitch black was frequently used in golden and silver age. Mostly because of limited printing technology, but it was. It's great for making this kid of "walking cosmic black hole" characters. Especially because it removes all details.
Don't use only two colors.
There is more than black and red, you know. Take Spawn for example. He wears black tights and a red cape, but also has white markings, silver chains and spikes, and green eyes.
Classic comic book costumes very often had only two main colors and tertiary color, if it was there, was only on smail details like emblem or eyes. Again, people are doing costumes that way for a reason. Classic Batman - black/grey, only accents being belt and emblem. Superman as well, two main colors, only small accent being his emblem. Spiderman - black(blue)/red, only accents are eyes.
Threre is nothing wrong with it.
Spawn has typical nineties costume, overloaded with unnecessary details. Not everyone likes this style.
So... In general, it's a silly topic, but at least we have it for showcasing our blackredders.
I think the "problem" is saturation. A lot of people probably have 1 or 2 flat-black-plus-bright-highlight costumed toons, and there are certainly a few examples of characters like that from comics. When it's just one character from your roster, or a couple of characters in a comics universe, no big deal--no different from several characters following any number of other tropes.
However, it seems like at least every other person on CO has a 'bad' blackredder of the kind described in here, and they seem to play them a lot. So something that seems cool within the scope of the characters you've created--one that stands out because of the high contrast between dead black and bright whatever--instead becomes something cliched, because there are 40 other toons running around RenCen with the exact same color scheme.
All that being said, there are certainly right ways to do it, as plenty in here have showcased awesome costumes. There are also 'wrong' ways to do it, to my eyes, as plenty in here have posted costumes that I think look terrible. BUT, that's the greatest beauty of all about this game--my opinion means exactly nothing to those people, and it shouldn't.
If the costume looks awesome to them, then you know what? It's an awesome costume.

This is the most literate and well thought out answer on this subject, in this thread.

It could be that every other person that plays the game is 10 years old and thinks it looks cool because of Deadpool. Plus, there's only like 6 colors, Red/Black is bound to come up.
Those are two terrific clones (or one clone, one homage, whatever). Excellent lady DD.
I actually visited your site yesterday, and this is the one that really stood out. Good work on all the comics, but this one is just "WOW". Great costume, really great design. You should be proud.
Been awhile since I saw something posted here. Was screwing around from boredom and tried to make the worst example of blackredding/glow abuse. Not ten minutes after creating it, some random player happened by....(I'm on the right).
To be honest 90% of the toons running round in game are God Awful, and they dont have to black and red. I make my toons to be something I would like to see in comics, and are in fact strongly inspired by the comics of the 90s from Image, Top Cow, Marvel. Wish more would design that way.
Personally I blame anime and pokemon......
You didn't actually need to post the costume file screen for it: I would have just tried to figure out the pieces on my own and make adjustments to them. The thought's appreciated though, Mee.
Everytime I read the title of this Thread, Sins of a Solar Empire comes into my mind
What's so great about Black and Red anyway?
I never got to like this Combination! (Edgy Bull****)
and why so many people use the BRIGHTEST and SHARPEST Red tone which Pierce your eyes and makes you want to remove your eyeballs from your Skull!?

Here's how many of you know her, her Interview with the Vampire look.
This was her earlier leveling up costume, what I used when I was making her comics.
In the world of Multifaria, as in the RESISTANCE adventure pack, she led a different life.
