This is a long shot, because I've not seen any other solutions listed anywhere, but I figured it couldn't hurt to try.

I can log into the game and create characters, but I can't actually load the game. The load bar gets to about 90% before I start getting a "server not responding" message.

    I have:

    - Created an exception in my firewall.
    - Turned off my firewall entirely.
    - Opened the relevant TCP ports.
    - Created a QoS priority in my router.
    - Had a friend log into his paid account (I'm on the free trial).
    - Switched from Wi-Fi to ethernet connection.
    - Updated all drivers.
    - Run as admin.

Nothing's made a lick of difference. My computer runs WoW just fine, so I know it has the capability ...

    Can anyone help?

post a dxdaig report on your system
post the results of tracert patchserver.crypticstudios.com and a nettest
    Nettest:
    Go to http://files.champions-online.com/nettest.exe
Download this file and run it
A command prompt should appear running the test automatically

For good connections, column 1 and 3 have values around 500 kb/sec (outgoing/incoming), column 2 has values around 20 kb/sec (transfer rate). If the values in these columns is less than what is expected you may have filtering or blocked ports either on your personal network or from your ISP.
then we can take a closer look at the data.

    Thank you Pegasus.

The DxDiag was too long for a post, was there any specific part I should be posting?

looks like you have two issues routing problem with high ping and if that was all you got out of nettest you have the required ports for the game 7000-7500 being blocked.
if you can not attach the dxdiag report as a txt file then paste through audio section of the report.

Ah, didn't realise I could attach. Amended :o

Hmm, that is odd, I definitely opened up those ports. I'll give it another go.

Your nettest looks very bad, and that's probably the problem. It looks like you're using a laptop. Are you on a wireless connection?

There isn't anything obviously wrong in your DxDiag file that I see. Both your processor and video card are toward the low end of what can handle the game, so you'll have to turn settings way, way down. Try running the game in safe mode in the launcher just in case that's the problem, until we get the connection issues sorted out.

Incidentally, your "G4saurus Rebrandus" (AMD marketing's derisive name for Nvidia's propensity to rename old cards rather than release new ones) video card is basically a renamed GeForce 9500 GT, or rather an underclocked mobile version of it.

Hops 6, 7 & 8 are nothing to worry about, likely those hops are blocking ICMP messages so you won't get any replies (hence the *).

Quaternion, he may be an overseas gamer like myself, hence the reason for the larger pings (200 - 300 range).

However hop 1 is a bit of a concern, you've actually gotten a least 1 packet dropped going to your router/wlan access point. Gathering you're on wireless? Might want to run a continual ping test or download a tool like D3TR and run a full continual trace to the CO servers.

And as PegasusMD said, your Nettest appears cut off, missing 7000 range tests.

I was talking about the nettest, not the tracert results. The numbers on the nettest are way too low, and it looks like the test didn't even finish at all.

I am on a wireless connection; I can perform the test with an ethernet connection instead and see what happens, but I don't think it will be wildly different.

The test did not, as you say, finish; I am beginning to suspect it might be an issue with my ISP, since I keep trying to open the necessary ports and nothing is happening. I read that my ISP puts a blanket block on some ports for residential connections and this cannot be removed.

The ping rate, as Lilmark mentioned, is because I'm in Australia; there's only one ISP here with a decent ping rate, and it is not the one I use.

Try an ethernet connection and see if that fixes the problem. Sometimes it does.

You could ask your ISP which ports are blocked. If they're blocking ports that the game uses, then you may not be able to play. The portion that you did show had traffic going through some ports, but with far too little bandwidth, so that's a problem shy of being completely blocked.

I tried switching to ethernet to run the game and it made no difference, so I just assumed the issue wasn't wireless (or at least, not just wireless).

I bought CO when it was released and suffered the 'server not responding' issue. Now, a year + on and the SAME issue is still here. Hopeless.

It's been getting increasingly worse for me over the last week, happening once every few hours or so at first. But now I can't even take a step without getting DC'd. I can log in and load everything up perfectly fine, but after that I'm screwed :/

First, attach your DxDiag file so we can see what you've got.

    http://files.champions-online.com/nettest.exe

Next, download that and run it. Copy and paste the results here.

It would be also good to use tracert to trace the route to the game server and copy and paste those results here.

The fact so many people are having this problem and that it is still going on after a year only says one thing to me - poor servers for Champions Online.

The fact this has not been resolved since so long ago is really off-putting, my girlfriend and I were really looking forward to this game and love the customisation but there is no way we will be paying for this until it is sorted out.

Unfortunately for us it seems like they don't want to fix it, instead stating after a long period of time that they still believe it it is due to others when it clearly isn't. Like mostly everyone is saying, they are running every other game fine - I play US servers all the time and never have problems, the fact Champions Online cannot put out a stable server (I don't care if it is stable enough for locals, I'm talking about for the majority of their community) is very sad and shows lack of dedication to the community.

I really hope something is sorted out soon as I like this game but if not, my money won't be going anywhere near this game, ever.

EDIT: After reading around some more, it seems people have the same problems on Cryptic's other game, Star Trek Online. How they haven't sorted themselves out over this time period is beyond me. I really hope they actually sort themselves out soon rather than becoming an instant blacklist for any online games that include them.

Their servers are just fine. Well, usually. The problem is finicky network code that chokes on a connection that isn't that great, but isn't really that bad, either. A lot of other games have network code far more tolerant of hiccups.

I get the "server not responding" when i am ingame. The error is only for 8-13 seconds, then i can run around again. But then after 30 secs it pops up again. I have had this same "freeze" error on WoW and Warhammer Online. Any ideas?

I can login to the character selection, select play, it loads to the edge of the toasty monkey picture and the gives me Server not Responding (##.##s), which repeats a few times then disconnects me outright.

I downloaded the Free Trial (which didn't work), and then downloaded the Open Beta from FilePlanet, patched that (2.6GB that took forever), and finally I was able to get in and play for a short time last night (from about 23h00 - 01h00 SAST [GMT+2] at which point the message came up and i started teleporting all over the place)

The firewall on my router is disabled, my drivers are fine, running as admin doesn't help, nor does disabling my AV and all windows firewalls. I even tried using the Proxy option for both EU and US but to no avail.

I live in South Africa and the game is available locally, I downloaded the trial as it caught my interest, but after so much effort to get it working and now not being able to connect at all I'm not going to bother buying or subscribing until this is fixed properly.

The gameplay I've experienced so far was alot of fun but if this isn't resolved I'll find alternate entertainment.

If I select New Champion it tends to stop there too, seems the character selection screen is as far as i can go at the moment.

Well, I've been having this issue at random points while playing. Anywhere from in the middle of large combats to doing not much of anything. I've checked and rechecked everything but every now and again and often enough to be really annoying, I get the server not responding, usually followed by getting kicked to the login screen.

Yes you trace and nettest does look good. Are you using a wireless connection? If so can you try connecting direct using a wire.?

The game is less torelent of wireless connections. Also Win7 and Vista both does a network search every 60 second that can cvause lag and disconnect on some routers/modems that he game can be more suseptible too.

Yes, it is wireless. No I can't easily directly connect with a wire unfortunately. I know about the lag spikes from the background search for networks and found an applet that eliminates them for me. So that isn't the case here for the problem. I'll see what I can do about connecting directly but as wireless is a very prevalent technology anymore, something really should be done to make the game more tolerant of such connections.

I have spent the last several days trying out just about every solution I could find in the forums. However I still get server stopped responding every 5-10 minutes of game play. If I do not use the proxy server it is even worse and get about 2-4 minutes of game play before your server stopps responding than kicks me back to login.

Here are my test resaults to the US1.PROXY.CRYPICSTUDIOS.COM server.

what are the port connections like? tracert and ping are only part of the checks as those items are rarely filtered or blocked by ISP and routers.

post the results from doing a nettest on some of the critical ports the game uses.

I've suddenly started getting serious problems connecting to/staying connected to the servers. It started this morning after the maintenance completed, and in that time I've gone from getting the "server not responding" message frequently to being completely unable to connect, either through timing out at the loading screen or being stuck at "retrieving characters" or "loading maps".

I disabled virus scan, firewalls etc to no avail, reset the computer, router and cable modem, all that. Proxy doesn't help at all.

    Traceroute shows me that the timeout always occurs at the same place;

Are we getting close to a resolution on this issue? I read about half this thread before I decided to skip ahead. I was having this issue before, a couple months ago, got frustrated with CO but fortunately got invited to DCUO beta so I stopped playing CO. Now, DCUO beta is over and I'm back CO and the frequent disconnects... yay?

It seems almost random. Over the week, I ran through Demonflame on three different characters, no problem. Today, I can't even get into a cave on Monster Island. I just get my butt kicked by three headless Infiltrators while my character twitches. Is it a traffic issue and I should only play CO during the week??

I'm trying net test but it died at Port 80. I'll try the trace route next.

im having connection issues as well... nothing else except champions online, champs forums & website are unresponsive at best, everytime ingame i change zones i have to relog if i can, then select character and hopei i can enter the game.

if lucky i dont have to relog 20 times before i can actually see the char selection, after that if im super lucky i get into the game, but this has been happening to me for the past 3-4 days now.. before that everything worked just fine, i hardly doubt it's my router nor my modem cause everything worked really good uptill 3-4 days ago.

and again i stress the fact that it's only champions online, champions forums and the website that constantly timeout and is mostly unavailable to me, for example, to be able to get to see this thread itself took me 10 minutes of reloading after reloading and another 5 minutes to get to the last post and type this.

a bit frustrating but seeing as how fast you guys fixed the launcher crashing this morning i am somewhat hopeful to get atleast some insight to this.

and before someone suggests using that netstat.exe program to see my network statistics, already tried... the program crashes every single time, even if i run in admin mode.

    OS: win7 64bit home pro

i get to stare at the screen for an hour looking at "connecting to login server" message for it constantly to return to the id and password page...

and to this day the game has like 1 hour time frame every 24 hours that it actually works good enough to let me play without rubber banding for 10 minutes and quitting from frustration.

and even when i get to actually play it still has lag issues as half the thing i do register 2 seconds too late.

Stuck on the login screen. Keep getting:

    Connecting to the login server...
    *Takes a few minutes*
    Connection timed out

From what I can tell the servers SHOULD be up though.

Same here. It returns to the login fields without any message to inform what happened.

EDIT: it does say connection timed out. I didn't noticed the first several tries because it displays for a short time then goes back to the login window. Still can't get in, though.

I also tried entering in random characters into the account name and password fields to verify that it wasn't giving me the wrong error message. It's definitely not able to connect since what I put in should have gave me a wrong account/password error instead (unless I am infinitely lucky at guessing).

I'm having a problem as well.
I can only play the game durning mornings or late nights, but the server never seems to respond during daytime.
This is what I get: http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/3130/gameclient2011012616232.jpg

I assume this is a traffic shaping issue, as it only happens during what I'd presume are busy hours, but I would really want to play the game myself.
I am aware there was a proxy option earlier and I believe said proxy option would really fix my problem, yet sadly that option does not exist anymore (to my knowledge).

Is there any other way to fix this?

    Edit:
I am so silly. I found the proxy option through the launcher.
I can play just fine now.

Hi, just finished downloading yesterday. Character create and launching goes fine so far, but whenever I try to connect to the server I get hit with the "server not responding" error. In response to some suggestions I found on the forums I temporarily turned off my firewall joined the us proxy and played the game in safe mode + windowed mode. I am able to occasionally connect to the server but so far my longest connect time is 3 minutes.

Proceeded to download the nettest.exe and these are my results...not sure if it ended but thats where it stopped.

I also have the DxDiag specs on my desktop (if I figure out how to attach it) but I'm not sure how to run the trace; if it's as simple as putting what appears to be a link into the url above then I simply cannot connect for some reason.

Thanks for your time and help whoever may respond to this.

    EDIT:
Figured out how to open certain ports, noticed a slight improvement. If anyone has any information on how to open port ranges that would be helpful, in particular the private port box has me confuzzled.

Is there any progress being made on this? The game is borderline unplayable for a sizable percentage of all players now. (For some completely unplayable.) And it's clearly a poor coding issue. Hire a competant network coding programmer. And fire the poor SOB you got now.

When I hit the play button on the launch window to start the game all it does is go threw the Cryptic and Atari loading screens then the screen goes black and only shows my mouse when it is supposed to be loading into the game. I have windows 7 home premium 64-bit, 6gb ddr2 memmory, nvidia gforce 6150SE intergrated. When i tried the trial version it worked then i had to download again for the free to play version and now it just blanks out? Oh and i have it set to run as administrator and in compatibility mode for windows xp service pack 3 like it recommended but still no luck...

I can't play since the launch of F2P, (before i had a freetrial account and it worked just fine), I gave up after the 999 login failed threads which went unresolved.

Then i saw this thread with the " open ports from 7000 to 7500 ", so I opened them, tried to login but i got server timed out, tried on another character, it worked i got in game it didnt lag i thought it was fixed but when i tried to change char again i just got the old same stuff either : "retrieving maps please wait" or the loadscreen stopping at 70% with "server not responding in red " and if i get in game after a 5min loading it's like i have dc'ed but i can still move, the character has big rollbacks etc

Nothing has been done to fix this, everyday there are more and more " hey i can't login it crashes/freezes/does nothing/sends me to log screen" threads

I have a lot of games they all work fine, i know how to open ports it's just CO that has a lot of issues!

    REAL LAME.

Yeap, lunch time and I can't get in. I'll have to wait until 8-9 EST then I should have a stable connection until midnight when the rubberbanding and inevitable Server Not Responding occurs. It could be my ISP manipulating the bandwidth but I can get kicked off of CO and go straight into Lotro or the Rift beta with no issues.

I'm starting to feel like a fat schmuck at an exclusive club - can't go in unless it's quiet and then maybe the bouncer will let me in for a couple hours. At this point, I'm really, really hoping some other studio develops a superhero game - CoH is aging, DCUO is just a console action game and CO drops connections like a Hollywood wannabe drops names. There really isn't much competition in the superhero genre.

I love CO... freeform character building, tons of customization and based on a Hero Games license but this is getting beyond tedious and I'm feeling like I wish Hero Games had held out for a better studio. It reminds me of CoH beta when Jack Emmert told us that they were working on freeform character design then later chickened out in favour of the standard MMO pigeon holes... Cryptic Studios: Great Ideas, Poorly Implemented.

Okay, rant over, stress relieved... guess I'll have some lunch and try again. On the plus side, Rift beta 6 starts tomorrow so I don't have to get frustrated trying to login to CO during the weekend.

And. Guess what? Same here as well. It worked fine for a couple of hours today, then all of a sudden i get disconnected and -> "Retrieving list of maps".
It happened several times already, on diferent days.
It could be a client side issue if it werent for the fact i can sometimes get it to work. And at that point the game runs just fine, no lag whatsoever.

Too bad. I was actually having more fun in CO than i've ever had in any other game for the past 4 years or so. Ah well...

When I try to launch the game, I get a message in a window titled "Cryptic Launcher Autoupdate" saying "Trying to update the launcher. Please be Patient." It has a count of how many times it has tried to connect. It has tried 50 times unsuccessfully as I type this.

I saw another forum post where people had a similar problem with this more than a year ago. I was unable to find a solution. Is there one?

    ::EDIT::

If anyone else was having this problem, I was indeed blocking it with my security program. Thank you for the troubleshooting tips, Implausible. It works fine now.
