We have seen that the server not responding issues and general connection issues seem to stem from the connection to our servers either being filtered or blocked (for most not all). These methods
could also help users with launcher connection issues as well. Here are some steps to
hopefully eliminate these issues, and if these steps do not work then please contact our technical support team.
- Make sure your divers are up to date. (Video and audio) This just helps eliminate the need for this step later on.
- Try connecting directly to the modem (if youre using a Modem router gateway skip this step).
- Make sure ports 7000-7499 are open on your router and through your ISP. Instructions on how to do this can be found with your router or on the manufactures website. Do not forward the ports especially if someone else on the network is attempting to access Champions, as this can block them from connecting.
- Disable any and all Adware, spyware, Anti-Virus, firewalls, or any type of application that monitors your internet connectivity as this can either block or filter your connection to Champions online. If the application requires it make sure to create an exception for Champions.
- Make sure you are running the application as an administrator. In Windows 7 and Vista you can right click on the icon and select Run as administrator.
If none of these steps correct the issue then we can investigate it further.

I don't believe it should be necessary for people to disable anti-virus software just to play the game, nor am I comfortable doing that. I could play CoH right now without disabling a thing as well as connecting through my router without opening any ports (I'm not even connected through it presently) and not have a single issue. Please just tell me this would be a temporary fix until the Live server is corrected.
I bought this game a week ago and have been waiting patiently for the Live server to be fixed so I can begin progressing a character on it.
A response would be greatly appreciated.
Couldn't hurt to try.
I have tried all your solutions.....none of them work.....I didn't think they would work, but I figure you guys should have a better idea than me...
Why is it that it has gotten worse and worse the last 3 weeks or so....I mean that has to do with something you guys are doing or did?
All other games run fine...WOW-AION-COD-COH-COV......but what is so special about CO, that I have to jump through hoops to get it running right.....this past week has been horrible.....and I have run out of ideas....my PC is strictly for gaming....I even tried running a few of the games at the same time...they all run fine....except for this one....
The only time I didn't have this problem, was during early start.......early beta and open beta was problematic also.........I am starting to believe it has to do with volume.....I remember WOW having some issues like this...until they opened some more servers...and that problem went away......I have not been able to play now for a few days.....all I get is "Server not Responding" while it loads...then it just boots me to the log in page.
Thank you for the help thou... at least your trying.
as for the solutions above i think they are useless cause the game was fine b4 friday and now is a lag fest for me so..
I understand what you're doing. Presently I have everything that could block or filter my connection to the game either disabled or removed completely to see if that works, but I'm still getting the "Server not responding" message on the Live server.
That's why I'm curious about a patch for the Live server that lets us use the Proxy option, because I know it works for me. Is it something that's going to happen?
I appreciate you taking the time to help us out.
Again these are not solutions these are steps to help identify your specific issue. If these steps did not help your issue please contact our technical support team.
My problem is that somtimes, i simply cannot play champions online.. its been prominent for the past 3 days now, and it may be completely random, but from what i can guess, it happens around 8-11GMT
Basically, i can load up the patcher, go into the game, login, fine. Now when i enter the game, the loading bar is around 10 minuits long (This is completely irrelevant to my computers performance and changes none if i turn my graphical settings down, i have a 280gtx card with quadcore proccessing and 4gb ram)
Now, when i actually get in the game, i cant do anything without a 5 minuit response, if i try to move, i flip back and forth for a few minuits.
There doesnt seem to be an easy explanation or solution to this, because i would have found it. and the fact it isnt always happening (usually later in the evening) and then its fine any other time, means it simply has to be a problem on your side. i've turned of my firewalls, opened the ports on ISP and router, nothing i can do seems to work. and i'd prefer not to be given simple, obvius solutions in attemwpt to fix it because i have already tried them, and if anything it will be an easy way out of solving my problem.
When it first started, one guy i know had it too, exactly the same time, and stopped exactly the same time, about 3 days ago. now, it keeps happening for me.. but nobody else.
Please help me out because its increasingly frustrating and needs solving, its totally unacceptable to put up with this from any major online game.
NOTE: May be totally irrelevant but i dont understand how setting to administrator can help it? for one, it only runs the pather as administrator if you set it like that, the actual client is a seperate thing.. If i try to use the game by just using the client app, it doesnt connect to the server. I did however check in both 'always run as admin, just incase'
Try timing it and if it is exactly every hour or very close then you may have a configuration issue on your router.
I thought I fixed the issue by using my routers DMZ to open my computer but I was wrong... I tried opening the ports and everything... All my other games play fine.. Its jus CO where I have an issue.
I presume the proxy option on test will yield similar results, maybe I should try it out. But it does seem that the code for networking teams needs some optimization.
It just sayd "Checking for Updates" and then nothing. I have tried closing my Avirus/Firewall and still nothing. The Avirus & Firewall asked me to exclude it and I did. As I said it played just fine 2 weeks ago while I had the Firewall/Avirs running. Why does it not play now? Please tell me. I live in Greece and have been waiting for this game to play and now I'm loosing my 30day trial that the box gave me. It's not fair.
Someone said to use Uninstall Game, use Regedit and delete Cryptic Folder and install again and it would work but still nothing.
I want answers and a fix to this problem. FAST!
My operating system is Windows XP SP3
Today, after the patch, it wont start. (after loadingscreen with the big ape-thing, there is a blank blue screen with the version number in the lower left corner, nothing happens at all after that)
So, next thing you tell us, is to disable all security on the PC (antivir, Adblockers and firewall) and go in Adminmode to run the game?
Definitly not funny.
...and as silly as it may sound, even this very website kicks me off from time to time, did it when I submitted this very Post. Maybe I'm crazy, but Ive been all over the place online this morning /afternoon, dont get disconnected until I either play CO or go to the CO website.
i too have that problem but the loader takes only a few seconds however when i start the game after a few minutes or less i get a server not responding or something like that in red on top of my screen and it ether force logs me out or my character moves back a few feet
Sorry to say this, but this is nothing new for mmo games.
Fact is, Virus scanners and adblockers are really kind of a pain in the ****.
I prefure the, not use active scanning virus scanners and ad blockers and stay away from strange emails and porn sites method.
Just be glad Cryptic doesn't use GameGuard like Aion does.
If GameGuard crashes, Aion didn't make it, so they direct you to a korean company that doesn't speak english to assist you. lol
They don't demand. it's a troubleshooting measure for any network issue. Once the problem is figured out, then you can turn your stuff back on.
Second, this isn't the COH COV engine. Plain and simple.
Haven't you played online games before?
So I downloaded Hotspot Shield. It tells the CO servers that I'm playing in the States from an IP Address there, and presto--No lag.
Weeeeird..
Ports opened, tried the new proxy thing, tried it all, even Hotspot Shield.
Still "server not responding" often, and brutal 'rubber banding'.
I wouldn't mind doing so much work getting these issues resolved if I had installed the game this morning, but this game ran very well last week. What changed? A couple of patches.
I doubt that my router or my firewall suddenly decided to mess up CO.
I'm done trying to figure this out.
Maybe next week there'll be another patch and it will work again.
I play EvE, WoW, Poker you name it online, Never had this before.
Steam and D2D say product can't be refunded.
Why not ?..it' doesn't work!
Surely that can't be right, if someone sells you something that doesn't work you should be able to send it back.
I'm pretty certain the statement "No refunds" is on very dodgy legal grounds when talking about something that doesn't work form the get-go.
Well that's my day off for this week wasted...won't be spending it doing this again.
Scritty
I have tried US proxy via game launcher, gamepath for ssl connection between my isp and the states and vanilla method. All the above mentioned have failed to solve the issue, please advice
Here are the pros and cons of using the proxy from my experience:
Pros-
Keeps lag away for a little while.
Gives you confidence in thinking that lag will cease.
Cons-
Lag, SNR (Server not responding) and rubber-banding still happen a lot. The proxy only minimizes it by a little.
Hardly helps with playability.
People are still having lag issues.
Please note that these are based upon my experience and it is mostly opinions.
If you are in the UK we recommend that you use the EU proxy not the US as that is for users in North America.
For other users in this thread please try the proxy option that is discussed in the top thread on these forums.
I've tried doing this on my router, but this still doesn't solve the problem. When I go to start Champions, the launcher comes up and tries to patch, but stops about 5 seconds into patching, and then says it looses connection. Further, my wireless router for some reason actually looses connection, or resets or something, and my network disconnects. It starts back up and comes back, but Champions still doesn't work.
Okay, great, how do i go about turning this feature off? Mind you I don't have this problem anyother time except when trying to connect to Cryptic's Servers...
Look at this post for instructions. http://forums.champions-online.com/showthread.php?t=75984
Up until the beginning of October I had no connectivity problems with the game. It played like a breeze for me.
As of patching about a week ago (beginning of october - may coincide with the "instance problem") I now frequently get the red "server not responding" message as my game "rubberbands". The graphic quality and animation for my character are unaffected if I am not moving. But if I am in combat, I will not see enemy movements and more importantly, I won't see damage for me or them. Suddenly the "rubberband" kicks in and someone is usually dead...or the enemies have run away. If I am moving, I rubberband alot. Since I use jet boots, I often take falling damage when this rubberbanding occurs during a jump.
The frequency is great. I can expect it to occur at least once per fight for a moment.
Also, whenever changing zone or instance I always start at the loading screen with the red message. Then after a moment it either finishes loading smoothly or "hiccups" with more server not responding messages.
I have read the beginning of this post and tried what was suggested. Ports are open. I attempted playing with firewall down. Updated drivers. Even changed to US proxy. None of these changes have fixed the problem. And like others I am frustrated that what was never a problem before october (I've been playing since open beta) suddenly is a problem that makes the game too difficult to play to be enjoyable for me.
I am ready for the next suggestion.
Turbodog
Please look into this problem soon.
PS. all drivers and patches is up to date. I have no problem with any other games or programs.
Wire-
I think i located a bug. I started the game again for the 110 time and i changed the Proxy to NONE and it connected . . . with some lag.
I'm playing from EU
This pretty much describes the problem I am having, though I am playing from the US. Makes fighting mobs a complete joke and escort missions even worse. Waiting on next suggestion, I would really love to play CO but this is getting a bit rediculous.
I've done all the steps recomended by the techies and i've had no change.
I haven't been able to play properly for over 2 weeks now, and i'm no longer on my free month so i'm actually paying for somthing i'm unable to use, you guys need to get it sorted soon since i'm sure you arn't going to give us free time or give us a refund.
Edit : have you tried clearing your IE cache?
Try these sites? Im not too sure actually.

I am officially out of ideas. I am a lifetime subscriber, and I am starting to have regrets on that decision. I find myself scouring this section of the forums trying to see if there is anything I've overlooked. I am running out of patience. Could someone please assist me?
