In the summer Britain adds one hour onto their normal GMT/UTC, downtime is from 15:00 - 19:30 UTC so the downtime for Britain should have been from 16:00 - 20:30, they must have taken the servers down early.

Or you could just use the link I provided and admit you're wrong? Because it takes BST, DST and PDT into account ;-)
From the Launcher "We will be performing shard maintenance on October 09 from 6-10:30 AM Pacific (15:00-19:30 UTC). Please check the forums."
6am Pacific Daylight Time is (drumroll) 13:00 UTC - or 14:00 BST
The text on the launcher is WRONG. Hence my comment about doing the math.
Whilst the Pacific Time Zone is on Daylight Saving Time and the UK is on British Summer Time, the EIGHT hour difference between them remains in effect. If it helps, look at a time-zone map and count the number of hours the UK is ahead of San Francisco (8).
Either way, it's a moot point: the event timer that was published on the site earlier today is correct, and showing the 6am start time in the US and 2pm start time in the UK. Nothing was changed - a mistake was made in translating the time by Cryptic.
People ask how long have I been playing STO - well the answer is simple: I have been here since the beginning. I just haven't always had a lot to say.

The problem clearly lies with them getting the time wrong on the launcher, I don't think most people can be bothered with looking up the time differences

If people can't be assed to look things up and check them, and wont listen when someone provides the correct facts, they only have themselves to blame if they get it wrong. This is how fake news and rumours get spread, because people wont take five mins to fact check . This is why I provided the link to the event timer Cryptic published earlier today, to show I wasn't talking out of my backside.

I have to wait a few hrs after maintenance to patch @ a library (dentist appointment. Fun...)

So are we seriously only getting two story missions for this big hyped expansion?
It's not an expansion, it's a new season.
And to be honest, I think it's better this way. Being drip-fed new episodes means we anticipate the new ones more. ViL was great, but most of my friends had finished all of the new set of episodes that came with ViL within 48 hours - I daresay there were probably players who'd do so in 24 hours.
I agree - I prefer a drip-fed approach to that we get time to absorb the episodes, rather than quickly skipping through them to get to the end.

The question was: "Hi all. What time will be live today in the uk???" for which the answer is 6:30pm
Servers go down at 2pm in the UK, and come back up at 6:30pm in the UK - Timezones are fun
it's actually 19:30 GMT unfortunately, there's no difference between utc and gmt as the british invented the concept of time and all timezones are based on gmt
@marty123#3757 You are only half correct.
In the "winter" part of the year there is no difference between GMT and UTC. But since some genius at some point decided to invent this thing called daylight saving time and some other geniuses decided to implement it in the entire EU then in the "summer" part of the year GMT is one hour ahead of UTC. In fact, the fact that GMT is not a standard time but moves back and forth over the duration of the year is the reason that UTC was invented, to have a timezone standard that never changes no matter what the season.
And for the record it is "summer" - timewise at the least - for a couple of weeks yet.
And then there's the headache of not knowing if the Pacific times which are the ones calculated from originally is given in Pacific Standard Time or Pacific Daylight Saving Time. Not to mention that you US people seem to switch back to standard time a bit earlier than us European so in those weeks everything is completely out of wack and no one knows what goes up and down when. I've certainly given up trying to figure it out.
So assuming that the UTC times on the launcher is correct then the game should be back up at 8:30pm in the UK. But I'd take the word of a person actually living in the UK right now as we're currently I think in the "twilight zone" of timezone conversion. And even when we're not this is such a bloody headache.
Logic is the beginning of wisdom, not the end of it.

Sorry, but GMT does not alter, ever. The UK switches to BST (GMT+1) in March and back to GMT in October. GMT always = UTC.

If they don't specify DT or ST it typically means you use whichever is currently being observed.
So if they say maintenance starts at 6am Pacific (or PT or Pacific Time) it means when the clock in their office, since devs typically give the times based on the timezone they are based in, says 6am the servers are going offline for maintenance. Than when it comes to converting the timezone you just ask yourself is Daylight savings currently being observed there? If yes use PDT if not use PST. Timezone conversion is actually a fairly simply thing to do.

Well the devs just ruined the queue system making it far harder to join the queues I used to regularly play. Just wasted 30min trying to play queues and not getting in. Time to abandon the queue system and no longer play daily queues.

That's not the problem. Its no longer possible to see which queues are being played and join in with them. Which means its harder to play queues which are not part of random. For someone like me that plays a lot of Elite its a large problem making running queues massively more difficult.

Why doesn’t everyone just stop arguing and agree that Daylight Savings is a dumb idea
They've tried not using it a few times, I can remember going to primary school in freezing pitch black mornings last time back in the early '70s. Pretty crappy in general for anyone in the northern part of the UK.

From Cryptic’s standpoint this is likely a feature. Players can no longer know to avoid sparsely populated queues. I just got into a normally empty queue in about a minute. The downside is that informed choice is out the window as we’re treated like a draft horse and been fitted with blinders.
Also, now the default “warp out” sound is the Discovery version on the characters I’ve tried. Not cool.

You know full well the problem I am talking about has nothing to do with population levels. Its a problem with the new UI making it harder to play certain queues no matter the population level.

But its counter productive. I used to be able to play sparsely played queues by being able to play them when other people are interested. Now when other people are interested I cannot join in and play those sparsely played queues leaving those queues to be played even less.

I also know that the first thing you apparently did when logging in was to confirm a position, not evaluate an argument. It's off-peak hours (about noon, US), an off-peak day (Tuesday), and immediately after new content dropped. Of course you're going to have trouble finding games in old elite queues and that's definitely something Cryptic is going to consider in evaluating your feedback.
Even if you don't think data integrity is important, it can still sink a position. Give it some time, it'll help your case.

Sorry, but GMT does not alter, ever. The UK switches to BST (GMT+1) in March and back to GMT in October. GMT always = UTC.

It's not an expansion...I would just call it a BIG patch update.
The server's barely up and there's a new subfaction to play. Of course the queues aren't filling right away :P
It's also lunch time on a Tuesday (US), some of us are at work.
(Best let this one play out.)

They've tried not using it a few times, I can remember going to primary school in freezing pitch black mornings last time back in the early '70s. Pretty crappy in general for anyone in the northern part of the UK.
Run the file check from launcher options (straight from the .exe if you launch from Steam or ARC).
Not cool.
