The Elite BOFF Token, which Kael can't talk about because it hasn't been officially announced, was supposed to launch several times now, but theres a few kinks left to work out with it
Playable DSC Andorian is being worked on when the character artist Emilia(sp) has free time
Kael isn't sure when the ShiKahr revamp will hit consoles, but it should be soon
No plans for a Dauntless remaster right now(someone asked about one in chat)
New zen store ships will be announced soon
Kael knows what the winter event ship will be
There are plans to make T6 versions of all of the T5 ships eventually
When asked about Prodigy content Kael says its been difficult to get a yes or no answer. There was a promising conversation at Mission Chicago however
Kael will pass along the idea for a Fenris Ranger reputation for when they make a new rep
Cryptic plans for a new endeavor cap when people start getting close to the current one. Kael doesn't know if a new endeavor cap will be soon, but they have plans for an extension of it
When asked about possibly daily log in reward Kael says hes brought the idea up before, but the problem is they can't just pump out new rewards like some mobile games can which makes that difficult
There's no plans for a complete ground combat revamp due to staff/resource issues
Can't use floaters on other maps because other maps are designed to look good from the ground, but look weird/wrong if your looking at it from above. Would require remaking most maps in the game to allow for floater use elsewhere
Kael isn't sure if the STO console servers are/could be set up to allow cross play because they were made in an era where Microsoft and Sony didn't allow it
Unlikely they will do anymore adventure zones like the Dyson zone. Its a matter of resources. Resources are better spent making more contained stories they can put out more frequently then making a big BZ and have players wait for a long time
Kael will ask Jeremy if its possible to allow for trading in multiple t5 infinity boxes for a T6 ship box. Kael isn't sure how that would impact the economy, or if that would work, which is why he would have to ask Jeremy
Kael guesses that balance reasons are why cruisers don't have specialized equipment like Escorts/Science vessels have, but he isn't sure
Kael believes we are finding out the identity of the Emperor in the next story drop
Borg Queen ship from Picard is unlikely due to being too big to work in a lot of content
When asked about where dev time is going Kael mentions that the STO staff was working on the last content release up until about a week before it came out, and from then, up until about a week before they next one comes out, they will be working on the next one. It takes that amount of time to build the environments, design the missions, etc. At the same time character artists are making new character stuff, and ship artists are making new ships
Cryptic replaced the dance instructor voice because a bug was submitted that the Dance Instructor had no VA for when you talk up and talk to her. But because STO is now a SAG game they couldn't call the old VA back to do it, so they had to get a new VA to come in and do all the lines
A new themed lockbox is already planned
In a longer discussion about how dev time is used Kael mentions he knows animators have been wrestling with the problem of player's NPCs clipping through chairs/sitting on the floor because its not caused by a simple bug
The current STO team is between 30-40 people, or just over 40. Kael doesn't have an exact count.
Kael will ask about getting a 3D view, similar to how you can preview event rewards, for ship previews
When asked about why Cryptic uses lockboxes, when people would give them money for the ships they want, Kael mentions they just don't make the same kind of money on Zen store ships, and if they want to keep the game going they need to make the kind of money they do on lockbox ships
Kael put the clear UI mode for consoles, so they can take better screenshots, on the programmers radar a few years ago. but its a low priority thing theres not al ot of time to get to
They aren't currently working on Picard uniforms, but do plan to add them eventually. When asked about the Khitomer Alliance uniform Kael says he isn't sure why it hasn't been made available elsewhere, so he will ask about when/where they can do that
When someone brought it up on chat Kael said will message one of the devs(Jared) about getting Hearts and Minds added back in for Halloween/Friday the 13th
Kael said whats funny about H&M us how much people hated the mission until it was gone, then they wanted it back
Jared responded back that Hearts and Minds is an event he could just turn on so we might see it back this year
Kael hopes we can get race/gender changes for STO, but its not an easy thing due to the way the game is coded. Keith, the programmer has had his time taken up by other things which Kael says he thinks we will like, but he(Kael) hopes they can get race/gender change tokens done at some point
Cryptic has a weekly meeting with CBS, and has a pretty well established path of getting things approved for the game. When doing something like a ship from a live action show they can just do it, but stuff from animated shows like LD or PRO they make concept art/early model, send it to CBS, it gets approval yes or no, then they make changes based on feed back. For story stuff they talk to John, the CBS rep, saying "hey here's what were thinking of doing, and the character we want to use" and John goes out ot the writers of the various shows, and Alex Kurtzman, and then they give them a yes or no. Cryptic got their first no in a long awhile recently. They wanted to use a character for something, but CBS wanted to use them for something else, so Cryptic is going to use a different character instead.
Kael isn't sure why we don't have a Kobali pistol. Most likely when it was made a dev didn't want it playable for some reason, but he will ask about it. It might be such old art that the team wants to redo it, and thus it get put on the back burner.
STO doesn't do a 4th of July celebration because Earth is united by STO's time, and they have a lot of players who aren't American
When asked if there are more plans to canonize STO's story by bringing it into the shows Kael says yes
Tardigrade with a top hat is a possibly closer then people might think. Pets wearing hats runs into the creative back and forth where several people in the higher ups don't want to have pets wearing hats for IP reasons.
Cryptic has an internal chat dedicated for all the swimsuit clipping issues that cropped up this year
When asked about why lobi equipment items aren't sellable on the exchange Kael says theres a number of things not sellable on the exchange because they want them to be character rewards and not something farmed out to be sold
Kael doubts there will be an update to demorecord to add more tools/functions to it. Technically speaking, the tools were never supported by STO, and there was even talk about taking it out awhile back. Kael and Kulia were like "no we use that for stuff", so it wasn't removed. Kael doesn't think demorecord will ever be removed. The situation came up because a programmer asked if anyone used, this and Kael and Julia were like yes. Kael doesn't think it was ever a serious discussion, just an off hand question.
Kael will look into why the Jupiter carrier isn't available to 3D print
Not a lot of people have bought 3D printed ships, and it was a lot of work to get it done, but the return was probably not worth the investment. Kael doesn't think they will put in the time to get the same done for 3D printed captains. Same is true of Eaglemoss ships, which is why Eaglemoss stopped putting out STO ships.
The Vesta isn't 3d printable because the artist who originally made it specifically put in his contract "don't make it 3D printable"
Something new is being added to the Halloween event this year. some of us already know what it is(likely referring to the TFO being in the patrol menu on consoles)
Kael guesses we will eventually see some of the NSW updates to the Gorn added in-game. Al Rivera is apparently not a big fan of the STO Gorn, and prefers the TOS version. So if theres an opportunity to switch out how the Gorn look Kael believes Al might take it. Kael likes the STO Gorn, and when it was brought up in the past to just replace all the STO Gorn with TOS Gorn he was like "I don't think that would be good" *note* Kael admits he hasn't yet seen the episode of SNW with the Gorn in it, because he can't watch it around his daughter, so hes not aware of whatever changes SNW made to the Gorn
The Cryptic staff would love to do a Captain Proton or Dixon Hill mission, but its hard to do because art asset wise it would be like making a whole other game.

Hm... interesting information. And we are kinda due for a new Rep, and Fenris Rangers would give a good way to give non faction, more civilian/militia styled gear.
Balloons TD 6 does 4th of july, War thunder, a russian game, does 4th of july. I can understanding not doing it for lure reasions, but to say it's the player base is a stupid reason. WORLD OF WAR SHIPS (An other russian game) does 4th of july!

Here's the thing... July 4th tends to also coincide with the Summer Event.
So A: it would be doubling up events. B: Not everyone is American. C: They are not obligated to put on a holiday event for every holiday on the calendar.
Far as I know War Thunder and World of Tanks/Warplanes/Warships are not in the middle of a major seasonal event. They are also not really a viable comparison as they are not MMOs. It would be better to compare STO to games like FF14 and WoW. Both of which do not have any kind of Independence Day celebration in game. And one of those two is another American based game. The other is Japanese run. In fact... FF14 tends to lean more towards celebrating holidays that tend to be recognized worldwide, such as Christmas, Easter, and Valentine's Day.

I get they don't want to to the 4th, but the escuse they used is stupid. A lot of games that have people playing all over the globe do 4th, along with other events. They could of said due to lore, and it would of been understandable. But in this day and age, saying because of players that are not Americans? Tell that to all the other games that do events like that, that have a much bigger player base then this game.

Thanks for the answer Cryptic about the female dance instructor. The problem is the new VO is flat while the old VO was not and has excitement to it which is lacking in the new one. I do not agree with the decision and it should never have been made. That "bug report" should have been ignored. I already posted in a thread about bugs in regards to the change to the VO. Please revert it back and do not do this to the Winter Event either!
As for the Gorn, leave them alone. Keep the STO Gorn, do not replace them with the TOS Gorn or have them as an option.

My point is that Easter, Saint Valentines’ Day, and Christmas are all Euro-centric holidays with a particularly denominational history. They are hardly global in any sense such as by percentage of global population or by number of nation-states who recognize such holidays etc. There are five whole continents with no history or only a very modern colonialized history of those holidays.
rattler2Member, Star Trek Online ModeratorPosts: 58,593Community Moderator
Religious stuff asside, the mentioned holidays are still recognized across the world. One of the games I mentioned (Final Fantasy XIV) that have those holiday events is Japanese, and they still recognize those holidays. For example Chrismas has drifted away a bit from the more Religious aspects, bringing out more social/family stuff and the spirit of giving. Essentially its evolved into a more generalized winter celebration that may integrate other winter celebrations from around the world. Some could argue its just rampant commercialization, but that's not ALL of it. There is the family aspect as well.
Anyways... probably a debate for another time and thread. The fact remains certain holidays are more international than others.
Hilariously, one year I did make a social media image for July 4th, and caught so much flak from the playerbase for celebrating a purely American holiday.
I’m not actually surprised. I get that Star Trek is primarily an Anglophone IP, and the player base is primarily American. The fact that zone chat is a constant barrage of the lowest level American political commentary is a constant reminder.
But people of different cultural makeups are more aware of projected cultural stereotypes. I live in Japan. And yeah Japan has Christmas and Valentines’ too. But it barely resemble what Americans celebrate. Christmas is when couples share Kentucky Fried Chicken takeout. Valentines’ Day is not about date night but institutionalized sexism where women gift chocolate snacks to their male co-workers. Of course you could still have the events in game but Cupids, Hearts, most of these images aren’t associated with it—and the references would be lost. But again I really doubt there are any Japanese players in STO. Probably just old expats like me.
When the Mirror Venture ship is released, will those who own the Cygnus and the Legendary Terran bundle be able to use the Venture skins w/o having to purchase yet another Galx x?

The 4th of July doesn't feel like it belongs in STO and I worry if it was added it would do more harm then good to the player base. Best to avoid purely American holidays.

Yes, I don't think an America-specific patriotic holiday fits with a future united Earth. Season events make much more sense, for example a harvest festival rather than America's thanksgiving. That applies to all nation-specific holidays.
Religious holidays don't make sense for Earth either, though they are fine for Bajor since that fits DS9.
The Elite BOFF Token, which Kael can't talk about because it hasn't been officially announced, was supposed to launch several times now, but theres a few kinks left to work out with it
Not sure what to think of this.
On the one hand, it's getting problematic that we need to buy all sorts of tokens for each character separately or be constantly reminded that our ships, captains or crews are incomplete.
On the other hand, if this mostly applies to the ground part, it won't bother me as much as I don't use Boffs there.
They could make this into a new lifer benefit btw: making all these Elite tokens account-unlocks. Or have veteran captains automatically be elite captains.
Either way, how it's currently done, it's not promoting the creation of new toons as they are behind existing ones on even more fronts now, every time you create one.
Pity. This ship needs a revamp, it's (AFAIK) the only ship with no universal stations. Which severely limits what you can do with it.
There are plans to make T6 versions of all of the T5 ships eventually
Great. I hope the old Star Cruiser is one of the first. It almost has to be, as there really aren't that many non-T6 ships left now that we have them for the Atrox, the Vulcan ship and some other ones that took longer than the others. I think the Tempest and the Star Cruiser are in fact even the only ships remaining without a T6 version?
Honestly though, they should've given this priority. Look at how many versions we have of ships like the Galaxy, Intrepid, Defiant and Constitution. I get it, these are probably big sellers and really popular ships - but it seems kind of hard to defend redoing each of those multiple times when there are more original designs remaining that could've have received an - yet again more original - upgrade as well.
Cryptic plans for a new endeavor cap when people start getting close to the current one. Kael doesn't know if a new endeavor cap will be soon, but they have plans for an extension of it
This is unnecessary. We don't need more power creep, and we don't need to widen the gap between new and older players even further. Something more original should be thought of, or at least let players collect other things than combat effectiveness bonuses through the Endeavour system if you're going to keep expanding it. Cause at some point it will only mean that new nerf rounds are going to be necessary and that just seems rather pointless, doesn't it?
Unlikely they will do anymore adventure zones like the Dyson zone. Its a matter of resources. Resources are better spent making more contained stories they can put out more frequently then making a big BZ and have players wait for a long time
Most of us have already provided feedback to this last time it was discussed. I haven't changed my opinion since then: adventure/battle zones have a higher replay value than stories.
Both types are important, but if you're going to base your decision on cost effectiveness, it seems odd to go with stories. It may be easier to produce those more constantly, but what's the point of that if players are also kept busy with them for a shorter period of time?
Nukara, Dyson and the various space battlezones are still rather busy, especially if you take into account how old some of these zones are by now - people still play them, despite knowing them through and through. I think that should count for something too.
So I keep hoping they'll change their mind on this and develop more A/BZ's.
Kael will ask Jeremy if its possible to allow for trading in multiple t5 infinity boxes for a T6 ship box. Kael isn't sure how that would impact the economy, or if that would work, which is why he would have to ask Jeremy
Please make this happen. The T5 boxes are becoming ever more useless since the more alien ships (especially the Xindi ones imo) were removed from them. I've got so many of them laying around and I have no idea what to do with them as there just isn't anything interesting in those things.
Even if any T6 box obtained by 'upgrading' those T5 boxes remain bound to the account, it would still be a huge improvement. And it might also reward and incentivise the few people who currently open boxes a bit more and keep providing all the other stuff through the exchange to players who don't wish to open boxes. It may even cause more people to open boxes.
Lots of people complain how expensive most lock box stuff is, but that's mostly because few players have to supply all the stuff for many more players - and a lot of it like kit modules or DOFFs are almost as hard to get as a ship because you have to open not just one pack, but two. A ship may have a 1 in 200 chance, a kit module pack for example a 1 in 15 but then you still have to get lucky and get the right kit module from opening that pack - and there are many kit modules, so it wouldn't surprise me if the odds of getting a certain module are even worse or at least similar to getting a T6 ship pack from which you can just choose whichever you want.
Anything that could encourage more people to open boxes, would be good for the overall playerbase as long as these things aren't going to disappear. So yes, please let us upgrade T5 boxes into T6 ones. It will likely mean that more people will try to get a ship directly instead through the Exchange - and that may also lower demand for Exchange-ships and thus bring down the hugely inflated prices a bit. It's a win-win situation, leading to one unified positive outcome: putting more stuff in reach of more players.
There's no plans for a complete ground combat revamp due to staff/resource issues
In the past I would have been saddened by this decision. But ground combat is almost completely broken with all the spamming of omni-directional turrets, armies of escorts and assimilated enemies, fast moving drones and such which can completely dominate the ever smaller ground maps (and location-defense missions where you'll be stationary most of the time even if the map is bigger) that we mostly get nowadays.
It's not as fun anymore as it used to be, so I don't really care anymore to be honest.
The multiple T5 to T6 tradeup thing has ramifications that go well beyond just ships and could have very severe consequences on the exchange. The T5 ship market on it would probably see a quick buying frenzy with skyrocketing prices then a total collapse. The T5 prices would most likely inflate well beyond their play value (unless perhaps the devs made all T5s scalable like T6s are, though it is an iffy solution at best), and if that happens they would in effect become just another way for top market moguls and whales to get T6s.
Another effect if that happens is that T5U upgrades would take a big hit and lockbox behavior would shift in possibly undesirable ways since the whales and the moguls would get full up on T6 ships faster and the whales would buy keys and open boxes less often as a result, so scarcity would cause a big surge in prices in other parts of the exchange like weapons and whatnot.

Unless the resulting T6 was account bound. If something like this was implimented they may need something to balance it out. Give: trades T5s for T6. Take: T6 is account bound.
*shrug* Just one idea. There would probably be a surge in demand for T5s because of it, and yes the market players would probably go nuts. But if it resulted in account bound boxes... it might curb a market implosion to a degree? Instead of inflating demand for T5s and increasing supply of T6s... it might just make T5 boxes more desirable overall?
Plus, I'm not sure what data they're looking at, but "when people start getting close to the current one"? I've already been maxed out for months.
Probably when the majority of the entire playerbase gets closer. Personally I'm hoping to hit the 600 club before then but I'm not doing it every day and I'm not doing every single one that pops up either. Just the ones that are easy to do. I'm not doing ground Tzenkethi kills.

So I keep hoping they'll change their mind on this and develop more A/BZ's.
Probably when the majority of the entire playerbase gets closer. Personally I'm hoping to hit the 600 club before then but I'm not doing it every day and I'm not doing every single one that pops up either. Just the ones that are easy to do. I'm not doing ground Tzenkethi kills.
