Interesting... so just about everything involving the Mycelium Network and the Spore Drive were classified by Starfleet. And I mean BIG TIME Classified. Otherwise Ezri, via Jadzia's memories as a Science Officer or another previous Dax host, would be more familiar with the idea.

    Very interesting indeed.

I find the connection to the Elachi most interesting. I would argue that while the Elachi may have some memories of their hosts, their personalities are that of the fungus. Hence why they're so willing to sacrifice themselves.

True. However in the case of the Elachi... I can't help but suspect that the Iconians had a hand in their evolution. While we do have examples of fungal infection taking over ants in reality, and stories of similar nightmare scenarios affecting humans in fiction, the Elachi ramp things up by not just taking control, but outright transforming the victim into an entirely different species altogether.

But still... something possibly worth exploring?

If you think about the blog, the fact that Ezri doesn't know that Starfleet had a working Spore Drive, or even considered the possibilities beyond communication, indicates that Starfleet classified ANYTHING involving the Mycelial Network and Spore Drive Tech. They buried it. So its existance in Discovery has no impact on future events.

Which still leads to the question why they bothered in the first place. Make a prequel involving and only working through magitech, and then just make it "classified" to never come up again. Why?

Same question could be asked about the Genesis Device.
Why abandon that tech? The ability to terraform a planet almost instantly? Why would the Federation abandon such an amazing piece of technology?

Reason: It can be weaponized into the deadliest anti-planet device in the galaxy. Just ask Commander Kruge in ST3 why he wanted the Genesis weapon.

As for the Spore Drive... look at what Starfleet and the crew of Discovery learned from the Mirror Universe.
The Network spans the multiverse. ANY misuse, such as using it as a power source for a supership IE ISS Charon, poisons the network and threatens all life in god knows how many realities. The Spore Drive itself is harmless to the Network as they just ride along it like a surfer. But it opens the door to much more dangerous tech that could destroy everything. Its too big a risk.

So... tell me. Knowing the risks involved with Spore Tech that were learned from the Mirror Universe... why would Starfleet not classify and bury it?

That particular instance was to ridicule the Excelsior for comedic effect. It's transwarp drive never led to anything. Discovery (the show/plot) however wouldn't have worked without the shroom-drive.

By that logic why bother giving the Excelsior transwarp only for it to never come up again until Voyager where it was an entirely difference race doing it.

There is a good theory that what the Federation was calling "transwarp" on the Excelsior was something entirely different from what the Borg call transwarp, and that in fact it DID work but was later just called "warp" with a different speed scale than before.

As for the instantaneous fungus connections, they do have precedent in TOS in the form of the flying fried egg monsters that tried to take over Deneva. Spock likened them to brain cells connected by unknown means.

Cryptic has said repeatedly they wont end the Alliance. Not even sure why you would want it to end, nothing would REALLY change.

I don't really care for this group and it's tales of galaxy wide genocide.

In my opinion the scale is too large. The shroom is Star Trek's equivalent of the force now, the not-so-subtle manifestation of the "thread that ties all together" (Trek really isn't too good here as even things like Grethor have to be actual physical places people can go). It's existence was known in the MU and surely must be figured in any of the multiverses. If it was just a drive thst pollutes subspace in the long run or something like that, okay fine. But the "everything" of the universe? Too much.

The Alliance screwed over the Tuturians (SP?) during the Iconian War, who became the 'sphere builders', who later went onto exterminating all life in two parallel universes.
