If you are the same Mjaybird who is in the dps numbers channels ? you have been actively joining MIA AFK Teams. So if you are that person ? how can you come onto the forums and criticise others for doing something you have been doing ?

I've only had one person ask if it was an AFK Run, and I said "Nope. I'm doing it." He then joined us.
Also had one person who said they hated the Mirror Event. he enjoyed that particular one because he had a Megawell Fleet Temporal Science with him to clean up the Terrans if they got a little too heavy in an area. ^^
I don;t think cryptic made the event for us to just AFK through it and then get the reward. Why are people doing this?
You are right that Cryptic did not make the event for people to AFK. That being said, players tend to avoid PvE queues and events that take the most time and receive the least amount of reward. It's all about the path of least resistance. Time-gates have become the norm on STO, and players don't seem to like that. Why wait when you have the tools to push through the mobs of NPCs? Look at the Crystal queues, players breeze through that within seconds, if not a few minutes. It is easy to do on multiple Alts, which makes it Alt-friendly. Mirror Invasion, on the other hand, forces the players to stay in the queue for the full 15+ minutes, and you have to kill the NPCs if you want the full rewards. That's fine if you are just doing it for one character, but it becomes a burden when doing it for multiple characters; hand, wrist, and arm fatigue sets in after a few runs; players become bored of the monotonous of the task. At some point, the rewards no longer appear justifiable for the amount of effort and time put into running the event. Thus, players search for ways to get the most reward for the least amount of work--hence, AFK.
AFKing part of the event has one good benefit for the player, the player can do Admirality and Duty Officer assignments while waiting for the "important" part of the event to occur. The benefits from these missions outweigh the effort in killing a few NPCs or saving the station from destruction. Why work harder, when you can work smarter? That's not to say that players do not enjoy the event or are just being entirely lazy. Most, when AFKing, are trying to be efficient. Of course, like any bell curve, you will have that small percentage that does absolutely nothing and absolutely everything, but generally speaking, players participate in the part of the event that counts.
Will the Developers fix this? If they have the money, they might. Otherwise, the event will remain as is. Players still have to join it and defeat the main boss at the end, so work is involved. The time-gate is still in effect. The NPCs now spawn continuously. The rewards scale according to effort. In essence, there really isn't a reason to change anything; you get what you deserve--a currency to obtain the special item, 50K Dil Ore, and 750 Marks along with the standard rewards for a Normal or Advanced queue.
Never have gone AFK and really haven't seen any. I run an Engineer, 3 Science, and a Tac through this. The Engineer and the Tac are using the Caitian Heavy Escort, the Science use a Paradox, Ho'kuun, and a Mobius. For all of them I do everything, Close Rifts, Power Transfers, and kill Terrans. Whatever is necessary at the time. I only run this on Normal.
Five Characters has been my limit for this Event. Crystalline Event all 14 of my Characters go through. First implementation of Breach, again 5, the last implementation all 14 went through, but that became tough near the end.

...
I only run this on Normal.
That's why. If you're going to AFK the mission you might as well do it on the advanced version.
I'll hold my hands up and admit I've been doing AFK runs but only on pre-made teams for that particular purpose and, at the risk of sounding like a stuck record, only as a protest (misguided at best) against an advanced queue that I see as nothing but a source of grief and aggravation. It needs work; when people would happily do The Breach Advanced in preference to MIA you know something's wrong. To be clear though, I have no sympathy whatsoever for people who go AFK in a PUG round. It's bad form and unfair on your team-mates.
The normal version of the queue is a different beast entirely. It's a little long to repeat on all of your alts*, but there's a good balance between challenge and reward.
*Thanks to the Phoenix box I decided not to bother doing it on alts, and having tried this year's console and found it underwhelming I don't think I'll bother with that option either.
Personally, anyone that I see AFK in an Event, I put on "ignore" so that I don't get teamed with them again.

Pretty sure that doesn't work.
Saw it work on Defera when someone tried to form a team that included me and someone I had on ignore.

If you are IR a science ship and you are closing the rifts like you are suppose too here is a bonus for doing t right. If not then no bonus for you just the standard here you go reward.
Would that bonus be angry whispers from a cruiser captain who doesn't approve of using cloak to get to the rifts? Followed by incoherent ranting and a final post-game whisper about how you've "reported me for not helping the team" and then ignore so I can't even try to explain how closing rifts is an important mission objective? You know, I could do without that particular bonus.
Your discontent stems from the fact that you're looking at the roles wrong. Cruisers handle power stations faster than other ships, yes, but that doesn't mean they should flip on converters and do nothing else from start to finish. What if the cruiser is taking fire and an escort or science vessel is nearby in a position to flip the converter? It's often better to interact with the objectives regardless of role if you're first on scene or the one not currently being fired upon.
Teamwork is good when available, but adapting to the situation is also necessary.

For pre-mades yes. But PuG, there isn't any filter on the matchmaking.
Well, damn.

This post is pure gold. I was wondering myself as well.
If one is going to AFK during the run, at least they should have the courtesy of doing it in a pre-formed team, like I do.
Every other day, I'd say, I spend the hour I have running three full Mirror Incursion Advanced, and I actually work at it, and so does my team. Then on the off days, when I may have enough time, I set up with a group of four other folks an MIAFK set... We run the event together three or four times on mains and alts and while we are in the initial AFK portion, we do our crafting and doffing. But all of us are well aware of how it works, and how many marks we are passing up and still earning. BUT, once the dreadnaught spawns, we all work together to close rifts, shoot bad guys, and knock the dread dead... Like players should. So it's technically only a partial AFK...

Almost 5 years ago I was invited to a fake PvP match in Shanty Town. Apparently players exploited huge amounts of rewards out of it which were originally intended to make PvP worthwhile for toon progression in Star Trek Online. Of course the rewards were removed as a result. The community demonstrated that it could not handle it and the past four years I play a game that has no noteworthy PvP activity at all.
You guys may embarrass yourself in private AFK matches all you want and come up with whatever nonsense to justify it. I just hope for the health of general PvE that your attitude has no negative game wide consequences in the long run.

That's a good one. Or, "Close the rift before you attack the last ship NOOBS!" Oh no, that cost us.....5 seconds!
Less obvious advice than you guys may think. On Advanced, in a PUG, there's a high chance people don't carry enough DPS. So, it's then indeed pointless to try and kill all the ships, when you eventually get overwhelmed after all, the station dies, and you're just left with not having closed rifts. So, me, I just gauge the team's abilities (you'll get that soon enough). And when it becomes clear the station will die, I just switch to closing as much portals as possible (foregoing even on transferring power). Then, even when the station is dead, and you closed like over 40 rifts, you'll all come out pretty decent, after all.
I read quite a bit about these... folks (let us be polite).
Personally, I have a REAL issue with these, and they are part of me only playing PVE stuff, as I refuse to work for such a... person.
Maybe, STO should make a system that can detect these, and severely punish them.
Thoughts?

You are right with that for a change. Its just not a PvE or PvP thingy which is likely in your mind again.
Lazy players will be lazy players, that's all there is to it.
Lazy PvEer AFK through events and lazy PvPers complain that others grind 40h a week for gear and then beat them without skill as result!
And yes, sadly this game is full of both groups.
