ok first of i have no idea if the devs will listen to idea's or if this is the place to put them but here is my idea for adding pvp to the game in a way that is fun and would work will in my opinion,
so right now we can all agree that this is mainly a pve game, but we can also agree that there are pvpers that want content. so here is the idea and I have no idea how to put this but.
so my idea is for a system to be added where a player in sector space can press a pvp button that won't do anything except signal that the player wants to pvp, the effect being that any player from another faction who has also activated pvp mode can target them and press a button to bring both players out of warp to start a battle between those players.
now 1v1 battles would be boring and setting up a lobby for pvp wouldn't fit the open world feel of the game so what I suggest is that after 60 seconds in the battle both players can launch a distress beacon which will let other players in sector space join the battle if they fly too it (maybe like those old battle markers on the map where you had pve kdf vs fed)
another think would work well with this is a PVP Rep system that uses pvp tokens that can be gotten by killing players this rep system could offer unique things like titles and cosmetic items rather than gear sets that could give an advantage to people that pvp more.

Or do you mean that someone has to go find you in sector space to attack you, so like a PVP queue but slower to pop?
Needs work
yeah it is like you can activate a pvp tag for yourself and anyone else with a pvp tag activated can open up a pvp instance with you in sector space if they can find you
Seriously, people need to learn how to use the search function on the forum.
Bottom line: Sector PVP is unwanted and undesirable for a myriad of reasons or as a certain current politician would say: It is a bad thing, seriously bad, really trust me.
for people who don't know how to READ. it's not MANDATORY PvP, that was clear. nothing would change in the game unless the player ACTIVATES the PvP flag. so quit whinging eh? you didn't even bother to read...just ASSUMED it was the typical PvP topic.

sure this game has missions that make you feel like you are doing something to help people but in the end it is just a scripted story with no sense of freedom.
and if it was set up like this, pve players would never need to pvp since they could just turn off the pvp setting and they couldn't be attacked or attack other players, this would be something you would only need to do if you wanted to do it.
it needs something like pvp or even random pve encounters that happen
Anyway, putting that aside: instead of PvP, they could also make some live event where we fight against an enemy that is attacking in multiple sectors at the same time and the players have to coordinate the defence. Basically, a large scale, sector space wide invasion force.
It would make sector space more intesting, meaningful and it would be different.
I would love a live event. It's something that MMO's used to do and we havent had one since launch if i remember right (When they let the Klingons attack ESD or something like that. It's been awhile)

No PVP needs to go away it's already ruined the game as it is with the very small but loud mouthed PVPers getting th ear of the Devs with that "rebalence" this year.
They had something close to that in a PVP Queue pre DR and guess what it was a ghost town.
For me competitive PvE has helped a little, a PUG gone wrong to the extent it's salvageable through having to play really hard provides the same sort of feeling, the Arena of Sompek event gave me an even bigger dose as I didn't know what to expect or how long I could survive. It was fun kitting out a toon to be as prepared, balanced, and survivable as possible for just such a scenario.
Looking at what I just posted almost suggests there may be another aspect of this game that could be fun?
+1 for the unexpected
And seriously, factions again? When will it sink in to people that the "factions" have been a single Alliance for years?
I think the "Red Alerts" flying around Sector Space USED TO WORK LIKE THIS....but people got tired of being automatically pulled into those things when they were doing travelling someplace else.

Yeah, especially when you were trying to get your tier 2 ship to DS9 and some tier 4 Red Alert was chasing you!
learn to read, there was zero in the OP's post about open world gankfest PvP.

From what I can recall the old Red Alerts in sector space were optional and you had to change course, fly into them, then click on a button to enter them. There wasn't any way you could get automatically pulled into them.
When I was a new player I really used to enjoy them as you could always enjoy a good space battle and if you got far enough could engage the "mother ship" boss group which at the time seemed quite challenging. Some even had other random boss enemies that could cloak, and were otherwise a fun pain in the a$$ even versus several players. Overall a great way to learn and I think would have given some satisfaction to the OP's request for something as simple as a distress signal.
TBH I can't even recall why they were removed.
+1 for the unexpected, exploration, and for spontaneity
