STO LOADING SCREEN "CRYPTIC" - Never continues/Hangs/Crashes/Not Responding

So a little brief back story; I have been playing STO since 2013. I have used STO on 3 different gaming computers in this time and have had this issue before MANY MANY times, usually after a patch. In those instances, uninstalling, clearing temp dir, force verify, directx flags, patience, and/or safe mode have resolved loading issues. Once the loading issue is resolved once, it is resolved, until some time.... (usually corresponds to a major patch).

My computer is currently an MSI GT72S 16GB memory, SSD, GeForce GTX980M, i7, Windows 8.1 Pro, with drivers, firmware, and Windows updated with all applicable and sensible patches or latest revisions. Further - I did not change my computers configuration or setup*AT ALL* when this issue occurred. What I did do was patch the game....

Whether using STEAM, or ARC; uninstalling, rebooting, reinstalling, clearing the system with disk tools etc, emptying all temp folders, cleaning the registry with ccleaner, turning off all non required services, disabling firewall, completely removing virus scanning software, reinstalling to completely different drive locations, etc - and as mentioned above, force verified, game safe mode, changed display settings, and dx9 game command line settings as found in numerous forums (e.g.Reddit)... And still, I cannot get the game to load.

I launch it, the launcher connects, enter username and password, it patches if applicable, and upon loading you get the screen which is all black and says "CRYPTIC". That is it. Nothing further. It looks like it is doing something as in, Windows does not complain about it, and it does not "crash" however if I click on it with my mouse, or look at the task manager, it does indeed say, "Not Responding". My only real option is to click, close or force kill. I have left it at this loading screen patiently for up to nearly two days - yes, two days (48 hours), and still, it did not load.

My computer is a very reliable machine, I'm able to play numerous other graphics intense games and perform computationally complex operations with ease, there is no malware or "issue" with my network or windows installation. I'm an IT/SW guy myself, so I'm saying this with the utmost confidence.

Does anyone have some ideas I have not suggested? (and no,.... I'm not going to wipe my system or reinstall windows, that should not be necessary in any way). Is there something the game does not clean up after itself after an uninstall (in the registry or on the drive somewhere)? Is there others with an issue with GTX980M cards? Perhaps its a mode thing? I suppose I will go create a temp user (new profile) and see if I can get it working.

Please share some new ideas that may have worked for you.

Well, there was a suggestion there about installing (reinstalling) dx9c, so I did that. Didn't help. No change.

Also, On Cryptic Support forum they indicate to update Java. Mine is 8.101 (latest). Still looking for ideas. Oh yea... I uninstalled and reinstalled again. AND tried Safe mode.

    -d3d11enable 0 -d3d9 didn't work either.

I have NO OTHER application issues. My machine runs great. STO was working fine before the patch, and after the patch, nothing. As I mentioned, this has happened in the past, and there are YEARS of posts from others that indicate I'm not the only one.

So.... what did you change Cryptic? Cause I certainly changed nothing (until it didn't work) - and I am positive, the 1's and 0's written to my drive are the 1's and 0's you sent me and everyone else. Especially since I have uninstalled and installed 8-12 times....

Please .... some Staff answer my Ticket or my post. I will help trouble shoot this. I cant be the only person with this issue... maybe other people just quit.

I'm experiencing the same thing. It was happening a few months back. I gave up as the correspondence with support was taking too long (I'm in Australia).
I'll let you know if I ever get it up and running. but I'm about to give up yet again....

I had that problem initially I had to do some work on mine to get it to run again.

First I had to delete the options in game inside the folder so it would revert to default.

Then I had to leave it running for several minutes until it finally loaded the login screen, went and did things like do housework or something, took it about 20 minutes.

Once loaded I immediately went to options on the login screen and adjusted the graphics to medium for almost everything.

Then I relaunched the game, it was still sluggish so then I went and found out that sluggishness was also due in part with the connection from the launcher so I copied the launcher information and set the proxy manually by using this command line in the launcher "-SetProxy us1.proxy.crypticstudios.com 80" Haven't had an issue yet.

In fact since I did those things I've improved the load time immensely and the game no longer crashes after patches and I now get faster load times in load screens for instances that have not yet been created (used to be 45 seconds now they are 17).

I have had two responses from Support. Mostly frustrating because they insist on using "Form Mails" vs. communicating with us 1 on 1. I guess however this is to be expected since I bet they get many silly tickets and this helps weed it out. Here is what they both were:

Support Response 1 with my [reply in brackets]:

    Hello,

    Thank you for reaching us.

I appreciate your interest in the game. I apologize for the inconvenience when it comes to the loading issue.

It would be helpful to us if you could tell us some of your computer's information. Please submit a dxdiag log by following the steps below:

    A. What is the make and model number of your computer?
[My computer is currently an MSI GT72S 16GB memory, SSD, GeForce GTX980M, i7, Windows 8.1 Pro, with drivers, firmware, and Windows updated with all applicable and sensible patches or latest revisions. Further - I did not change my computers configuration or setup*AT ALL* when this issue occurred. What I did do was patch the game....]
    B. To create a dxdiag log:
    1. Open the DirectX Diagnostic tool
    * Windows 8.1
    a. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap "Search"; or point your mouse to the upper-right corner of your screen, move the mouse pointer down, click "Search"
    b. Type "dxdiag" (without quotation marks), and then tap or click "dxdiag"
    2. Click on "Save All Information as a text file" and save it on your desktop.
    3. Attach the dxdiag.txt that you saved in your reply.
    [See attachment per request.]
[further, my java is up to date, I have removed virus scanning software, I have disabled windows firewall (temporarily)]
[I installed with STEAM, and also installed with ARC, it does not work or behave differently with either one.]
[My hard drive is a SSD & it has been scanned, no errors]
Thank you for your patience. I will wait for your reply.

    Attachment: pastebin.com/ksQg4b4Y

Support Response 2 with my [reply in brackets]:

    Hello,

    Thank you for updating!

We appreciate the information that you have shared with us.

Kindly make sure of the following to possibly resolve your current concern:

    1) Make sure that your system comply with the minimum requirements to play the game.
[Yes. Doesn't my DxDiag post already answer this question?]

    2) Update the drivers of your video card to the latest version
[Yes. Doesn't my forum post & statement that all drivers, firmware and patches plus my DxDiag post already answer this question?]

    3) Run Arc and/or the game client as an administrator and check if the game folder is given appropriate permission to save changes on your computer
[Yes - as indicated, I have done this numerous times with ARC and STEAM. I have ran as administrator and ran the game with "As Admin"]

    4) Check your antivirus or firewall software. Adblock and NoScript-like programs do not play well with games. You can try adding the game folder/files to your exceptions list in your antivirus and firewall software. Please see the help menu or support website for the software that you use if you aren't sure how to do it.
[As indicated in my post, I have completely removed all virus scanning software, and disabled Windows Firewall, temporarily]

    5) Close any background programs and try running the launcher again. Some other programs that run in the background may be in conflict with the game.
[Agree with this as a possibility, and as noted in my post I did this already. Also, I did not add new software or change any drivers or anything else until I had issues loading. I have launched the game after updates, and rebooted, with no anti virus tools, and windows firewall disabled.]

    6) Check your system for malware, spyware, or a virus blocking access to some IP addresses and other parts of your system, compromising your computing experience. It is a good practice to use one of the top 7 antivirus program providers to do full malware, spyware, and virus scans with. Microsoft's antivirus solution does ok, but many other free solutions can cause more problems by using up your bandwidth and system resources (some of them even act as spyware).
[I have used Trendmicro, Avast, AVG, MalwareBytes, and Kaspersky. I do not use Microsoft's malware tool. Further, as indicated in my posts and follow up, my computer works GREAT. I do not have any other computer issues. I am an IT/SW Engineer, my system is not infected or compromised and my firewall and my router are not blocking access to the game.]

If the issue still persists, please do refer below for further trouble shooting steps:

    I. Clean reinstall /update DirectX
[Done, as noted, and posted by members in Reddit forums, it was recommended to install DirectX9c, I installed this SDK, and as noted, the DirectXDiag.txt indicated DirectX is working]

    1. Open: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/179113
[These steps are irrelevant as it indicates updates may be performed using Windows Update, and my windows is already up to date]

    2. Depending on the version of your Operating System, please follow the appropriate instruction in updating/installing a fresh copy of DirectX applicable to your system
    [N/A]

    3. Reboot your PC
    [Done this, many times]

    4. Launch the game launcher
    5. Under the ""Patching"" section, put a check mark on the "Force Verify" option on the game and select "Save". Let the game verify that your game client's files match the server-side versions of the files. It will also re-download any files that don't match.
[I have done this numerous times, but did it again and it does not indicate any errors to me. Is there a log file I should confirm? Either way, this does not solve the issue]

    6. After this process is done, try to get into the game again and see if the same issue(s) occur.
    [Yes, same issues occur]

If the above steps did not suffice, please refer below after.

    II. CommandLine
    1. Launch the game launcher
    2. Click "Options" at the upper-right area of the launcher
    3. Look for ""Safe Mode"" and check it
    [Done]

    4. Scroll down to "Command Line"
    5. Enter: -d3d11Enable 0
    [Done]

    6. Click the ""Save button"" and launch the game
[Done........ but this is where the issue occurs. As stated, it says "CRYPTIC" and does not progress. I cannot get into the game to do anything further...]

    7. Go to the game's video settings
    [NOT CURRENTLY POSSIBLE]

    8. Then select "DirectX9" as your default
    [NOT CURRENTLY POSSIBLE]

    9. Exit the game
[NOT CURRENTLY POSSIBLE, I have to force close the game]

    10. Launch the game again (ensure the Command Line in step #5 is still there)
[As steps 7-9 cannot be performed, this is the same as step 6]
[I have included some of the log files in the STO folders]

For other questions or concerns you may have, feel free to send us another mail.

    Thank you for playing!

So there are my back and forth with them. At least if others in the community have a similar issue they can see if their hardware matches mine, and confirm they have tried these steps as well. Perhaps it will work for someone. To the previous poster that commented on letting it run for a few minutes... I did let it run for 2 days lol.

Hi there. Have you tried running the game in Win 7 compatibility? I had issues when I bought this new laptop and it took me a few hours to fix. But I did get it running in safe-mode to make changes. It's really strange it doesn't work with you. Since I upgraded to Win 10, I find the game runs fine though.

I previously tried XP compatibility. But just tried it with Windows 7 compatibility as suggested, & also as Admin (for good measure). I've never had to do this before to get the game working on this machine, and it did not help.

Thanks for the idea. No go.

My most recent reply from support was as follows (I give them credit, they are responding daily):
    Hello,

This ticket has been escalated to me. The likely scenario here is that when the game was updated it also reverted some of the game settings to their default, and in the case of your laptop, it also reverted the graphics card settings. The laptop you have uses a dual-video chip setup, and that seems to be causing a conflict with how our games detect your hardware. Engineering hasn't found a true fix for the dual-chip laptop issue, though we may have found a workaround. The Launcher, which is a Java program, detects the Intel card as the primary because that card is running at the time, and not the 3D card. Apparently, there is a way in the video card settings to manually add individual programs to the list of things to run using the 3D card. Try looking for this setting and adding Java.exe as one of the programs that needs to be run on the 3D card, then reinstall the game and see if that helps out with this issue.

    My response was as follows:
I appreciate a response which does not appear to be a form letter.
So my laptop which is an MSI GT72S, this machine has an i7 core processor, thus the Intel HD Graphics. Additionally it has a GeForce GTX 980M.
This laptop is equipped with the discrete UMA /Standalone card switch. Wha this means is the laptop is EITHER OR Nvidia or Intel, but not both at the same time.

I do believe the game may have reset to some defaults, and I even believe the settings for graphics could have been impacted as well. So with this said:
1.) I uninstalled the GeForce drivers, cleared the base profile, and reinstalled. I launched the game normally and with the DirectX 11 disable flag. I also tried the game in safe mode. None of these choices worked.
2.) I went into the Nvidia control panel and added "Star Trek Online.exe" and "GameClient.exe" and tried #1 above again. It still did not work.
3.) I went into the Nvidia control panel and added "java.exe" & "javaw.exe" from the main java-jre_1.08_101\bin and the jre/jdk 1.08_102 paths and tried again. (jre 1.08_102 is my active Java, confirmed with cmd line java -version)
4.) I switched to UMA graphics, rebooted, installed the latest Intel integrated graphics drivers, rebooted, and tried the game again. I lauched with safe mode, force verify, Dx11 flags disabled, etc. Still did not work.

Again I appreciate they are responding often. Here is tonights response:
    Hello,

The Intel chip doesn't have the power to run the game, so you will need to have it so the game recognizes the Nvidia chip as the primary and sets itself up for that. As the game runs the system scan from the Launcher that is why I wanted you to manually set Java to run on the 3D card, even though it isn't necessary to do so.

If you've confirmed that Java is running on the Nvidia chip, or have temporarily changed the laptop settings so that the Nvidia card is active at all times, then you may want to try reinstalling the game so as to detect this and set itself up properly.

    My response:
The game does work on the intel chip. in fact, my daughters i3 integrated video works fine with the game. In my response to you I indicated I tried my computer on Nvidia ONLY setting, and Intel ONLY setting, therefore, I tried both. My computer does not allow the Intel and the Nvidia chipsets to be hardware active at the same time. I tried both, neither worked. I am confident I added Java to Nvidia, but moreso, I am confident the game is not trying to launch using Intel as it is DISABLED when Nividia is active.

I also reinstalled the game nearly a dozen times, and have reinstalled the Nvidia drivers as well, and it does not load. Tonight I clean uninstalled Nvidia drivers and installed the base ones that came with the computer, it did not work. The game used to work on these drivers FOR SURE. I then upgraded back to the latest drivers and it still does not work.

I reinstalled the game again last night AFTER I responded with the 4 points below. It also still did not work. I also removed it and re-added it to the NVIDIA custom profile for "Star Trek Online.exe" and "GameClient.exe".

I also captured a Process Monitor log on it, and have a rather large PML file. I still have not tried it with a new user profile but this is something I will try. Is there a debug mode I can turn on and provide you results instead of guess work?

Your recommendation is of no help, as I have indicated, the game never gets past the "CRYPTIC" loading screen. Therefore I cannot access in game options. Thank you for trying.

So more history for everyone, as I am rather determined to solve this.
I have two MSI machines, 4th gen i7 & 6th gen i7. The game is currently working on the 4th gen. Both are Win 8.1 Pro by the way.

I did follow up and create an entirely new user profile. This did not work. This was my note below:
I tried it by creating a new user profile, it did not work. I uninstalled all Java, the game, and Nvidia drivers, rebooted, and reloaded the video, then java, then the game, and it still did not work.

The game proceeds from the "Star Trek Online.exe" to the "GameClient.exe" and the BLACK SCREEN which says "CRYPTIC" loads up, but I do not get the "
    LOADING
" progress bar. I let this sit last night until just now, so it sat this way for 15+ hours.

    What can I do next?

They responded by asking me for my Gameprefs:
    Hello,

Can you send me a copy of the Gameprefs.pref file from in the game folder? This will show me what the game is detecting and setting up for.

Which I provided. The response was:
    Hello,

That is very much incomplete. Did you get that from the :\Program Files (x86)\Star Trek Online_en\Star Trek Online\Live\localdata folder? If so, delete that file completely, restart your PC, and then try running the game. It should create a new Gameprefs.pref file with all default values based on the hardware scan of your PC. Please send this new file to me.

For all to read, this is what was *(and still is in it)....

    	Prefentry Locale 0

Since they asked me to delete it, and recreate it... I did. As mentioned... it recreated it with the same thing:
This file is from the correct path (as you gave an example below).
I deleted the file, restarted, and loaded the game again. It re-created the file with the same contents. (the exact same file contents in the one I sent you).
It is not getting past that point, and that is after even letting it run OVERNIGHT> so the game is sitting there loading for over 10 hours.

No new file to upload, as the output is the same:
    "

    Prefentry Locale 0"

Sadly... The response to this today was:
    Hello,

What sort of antivirus programs are you running? It may be that an overprotective program is preventing this file, and others, from writing to the hard drive and stopping the game from running. Whatever you have please try either disabling completely or adding an exception for STO and Arc.

This was very frustrating because we have already been down this road. While I fully accept and acknowledge that "something could have changed" on my computer, or OS, it certainly was not a malicious change, and as it runs GREAT, and I am not a noob with computers, I say with good emphasis, that my computer is OK! Clearly something the game wants, my computer is not giving it. Now if ONLY Support would ACTUALLY support this, and do some debugging, perhaps this could be resolved for large numbers of enthusiastic & loyal players.
I've provided a list of the antivirus applications I use or have used in other responses in this ticket. The important point is that currently I do not have ANY antivirus or anti malware tools installed. I removed them in order to do this testing and avoid be asked to disable or remove them.

Perhaps you can ask your software dev team what the game is doing on "Prefentry Locale 0" and what it is supposed to do next

I can check other things on my computer, but please stop asking me to check things I've already been asked to check and reported on doing. Unless there is some different combination necessary. Thank you.

So all in all, I am trying hard to avoid being too snarky, but clearly, I am frustrated, as is probably anyone else reading this thread and experiencing the same technical difficulties.

Since your gameprefs file is missing all but that one line, have you tried copying the gameprefs file from the computer where the game does work?
  • noybmannoybman Member Posts: 38 Arc User
Doing this had no impact. Note.... The hardware between the two is NOT identical, but the behavior is the same - the game loads up to the "CRYPTIC" black and white screen and goes no further.
I opened the Gameprefs file afterwards, and it didnt overwrite a thing - even after closing the game, it had the same things. If I delete it, it creates the file the way I quoted it above.

nobyman, this is EXACTLY what I am experiencing on my Alienware 17 R3, though I have Win10. I have tried all of the same things you have, including exactly what the gamepref file reads, banging my head against the wall. I am to the point that I am going to give up on the game entirely, though I regret to do so.

I am also having these exact same problems, and while I also have an Alienware, mine is an Alienware 14, which like yours is running Windows 10.
A few years ago, after the release of the Legacy of Romulus expansion, I believe, there was an entire month where the game was completely inaccessible for a number of us; and I'm beginning to fear that this is essentially a repeat performance of that incident. :/:(

As I mentioned earlier... I am far beyond novice when it comes to computers, sw, Windows, Linux, Solaris... etc. Why am I saying this? Because I am not a common run of the mill confused general user. Anyways...

I just tried the game, and for the first time in over a month, almost TWO.... it WORKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The only thing I did, was install Putty today for reasons COMPLETELY unrelated to the game. Anyways, I just tried to load it. This is the screen I was stuck on all of this time:

The difference for me EVERY SINGLE TIME I've tried this, (except for now), is that the "LOADING BAR" never showed up.

Oh, by the way.... my Gameprefs file is indeed showing my video card as a GeForce 980M

Resolved...Finally. I run ROCCAT devices and software. Stumbled on a post where a player with similar issues uninstalled the ROCCAT drivers and software and loaded the game fine. I did the same and it WORKED! Crazy stuff, some kind of driver conflict, so it wasn't graphics but input related that caused the crash on startup. Not sure if that helps anybody else out but something else to consider. Best of luck all.

As I mentioned, I installed PUTTY, and of course the game updated.... One size solution does not fit all, but I posted every conversation and recommendation support made to me so that the rest of those that stumble upon this might find a solution.

I guess if anyone TRIES everything above, and it does not work, try adding PUTTY, or removing ROCCAT. BUT in both of these possible suggestions.... I'd say do it more as a last resort if the game was working previously. (Cause in my case, my system configuration had not changed AT ALL... just the game itself was updated).... Preposterous!

    :disappointed:

    Here we are again.....
Updated for the recent patch, and the game will not get past the loading screen.

    Cannot even get that far.
I type my password and get told "syntax error" then the crash reporter comes up.
I actually checked :\Program Files (x86)\Star Trek Online_en\Star Trek Online\Live\localdata for the game pref file and didn't find it. \localdata doesn't even exist in \live on my system.
