I've been thinking of doing something like this for a while. What type of beam weapon can be found in the most colors? I am guessing phasers. I am also afraid of what I may have to do to get those beams.
For the best effect with a single energy type I guess phasers would probably the way to go. Disruptor also has quite a lot variations but most stay in shades of green. Same goes for most, not all, polaron, tetryon and plasma types. Though AP also has some drastic color changes among it's sub types.
For pahser:
Standard & Agony
Quantum Phase- Mission reward
Bio-Molecular- Undine Rep
Biomatter- Xindi Aqua Box
Retro- mission reward / T1 connie
Andorian- T5 andorian escort (only one of them needed)
For AP
Standard
Voth- Voth box
Fluidic - Undine Box
Radiant- Iconian rep
Herald- Iconian box
basically someone uses 8 different weapon types and typically if you use one type of beam you do not get a power level disavantage using them, you mix and match and you get a penalty for it. besides that it looks silly. i can testify to that having flew a t4.5 assault cruiser around with rainbow beams.
T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW. Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.

It has nothing to do with power levels. It's strictly a matter of damage boosting consoles.
Phased Tetryon is actually Cyan. Not purplish blue. Standard Tetryon is straight up blue and Destabilizing Tetryon is white.
Which is purplish then? I have guy who specializes in tetryon and I know one of them is purplish...
That would be dominion.

Rainbow boats are very viable since the release of the [+beam] spire consoles.
Hell I have a cannon rainbow boat. I have the DHCs from the rewards from the last few events. And all the consoles and torps. Turned one of my FED pilot escorts into a hammer. It's actually quite fun having the quant phasers, the disruptors from on of the Iconian missions and the DHCs from another mission.
As different as the weapon types are, they still hit like freight trains.

Yeah I should have mentioned that the same goes for [+cannon]. Skittles - taste the rainbow...of DOOM!
So with all the time stuff going on, specifically the temporal agent recruitment event coming up (and a few new time ships with it), is anyone planning on making a rainbow boat? No, not like having 6/7/8 beams all firing different colors of the rainbow. I mean filling out your ship with as many temporal themed (rainbow) weapons as possible. For example, the antichroniton-infused tetryon weapons from that one episode, the Krenim chroniton torpedo, the chroniton weapon from the lobi store, etc.
It’s a good idea OP and I have already similar plans as “back up” solution if I want to go for the new expansion but without breaking into sweat over it. I have so many epic and UR acc bound beams of different colours around that I threw out just because one mod was imperfect that my AoY toon could already have a nice build without me putting much effort into it.
With +beam consoles we have at spire (not to mention flagship consoles) rainbow builds are not that far behind. The terran and ico beams are also 2 of the best beams to slot. If one ad the kinetic cutter and perhaps the 0 energy consuming romulan beam a sci ship would almost be set up already.
Atm I have only settled on an Andorian science toon. I don’t have to make a performance build out of it because I already have nine of those but would love to do something fresh and different.
We shall see. With all the torpedo pioneer work @darkknightucf made I could also see myself giving torpedoes a second third try.
You should. They still have their headaches and bugs that need to be fixed (*cough* @crypticrock *cough* get on it *cough* please! *cough* Ice cream is available *cough*), but they'll be fun to fire off into a crowd of <insert enemy to be destroyed here>.
Can get a few torps together to get you something to fit the theme. We'll call it the Chrono-Chromatic Arsenal. Hmmm... we should get a set bonus for that.
2pc - Chromatic Energy: Increases the blast yield and blast range of all Chrono-Chromatic projectiles by Xx%.
3pc - Space-Time Augmentation: Allows all Chrono-Chromatic projectiles to manipulate time, space, and subspace, increasing projectile speed by +200% base speed. Upon impact, a subspace rift is created that does X kinetic damage in Y radius.
"Rainbows" of the same energy type are fine, but if it was me making it there's no way I'd mix energy types. It's just not a good practice.
If you use fleet tac consoles with +Beam or +Cannon (depending on which you use) the difference is only a few percent from using a singular energy type with appropriate consoles like +phaser, +disruptor, etc.
To each, their own.
I just like those few extra points because I am slightly below middling on the whole DPS scale anyway. I also believe (not sure if it's accurate or not) that there's an innate synergy built into certain sets. Like how Nukara rep gear comes with Tetryon. If there wasn't, why else make that the weapon of choice for the set? I use what I can get my hands on until I have a complete set, thus having a fair amount of ships with mixed gear of the same energy type. If I want to change flavors, then I jump into another ship.

According to the mathematicians, the % difference in damage between +beam vs +<specific> console won't show until you're in the 100K DPS range, and then, it's around 3% or so iirc. Also, not all sets have such an innate synergy. The Iconian & Terran "defensive" set (shield, engine, etc) doesn't have a direct synergy with the "offensive" set, but the Quantum Phase "defensive" set augments the "offensive" set's capabilities greatly.
As some have mentioned, rainbow builds are usually frowned upon, mostly because of a lack of understanding of how various pieces fit together. While I wouldn't call anything I've done here novel, I did spend a few days planning this build, and looking at how the different power/set bonuses would work together. I would probably do some things differently, but it got the job done. Prior to 11.5 it did >60K, so even if you didn't have some of the more expensive traits, it should still perform quite well.
What about rainbow boats that use beam tac consoles instead of energy consoles? Ive beene tempted to have ships with 6-8 omni
You can't do that, @whicky1978. You can equip one crafted omni, one non-crafted omni, and the KCB. If you want a fully omnidirectional ship, you'll have to go with turrets (and cannon consoles if they're all different energy types, for a Skittles ship).
Thats right. They need more non crafted beams with different energy types
Edit: A tier 1 ship could have all 360 beams, with only 3 weapons slots right?

don't forget the chroniton beam from the lobi store; that's antiproton too - only available in DBB flavor, though

I built one only once to get my damage accolades by going into low level battle zones and spamming cannon volley.
Yup. I have one on an Annorax doing 60K+. Tan'kia has one at 100K+ I believe.
