assuming pwe is capable of migrating post data, this looks to be nothing but good news. vb3 (our current forum) is eol, vb4 is eol, and vb5 was doa. vbulletin is yesterday and i am super glad to see pwe are sharp enough to have realised that. im not sure i wouldnt have taken us to xenforo instead, but vanilla is a pretty good choice imo.

Yes, I figured that was one of the two major goals in implementing this. The other is to no doubt make it easier to moderate.

But I don't recall a mix of Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down sort of stuff.
This is what I was referring to. "Thumbs Up" or "Like" alone is insufficient. The only real issue with "Thumbs Down" or "Dislike" is the likelihood threads announcing patch notes or other changes are downvoted into being closed, assuming there even is an auto-close mechanic in the first place, but those types of important threads can artificially be given huge amounts of upvotes or otherwise protected.

Thanks for the info, but consider how sad that is:

My HOBBY is working on things mechanical, as such I can fix cars and motorcycles, I have been an Aircraft Mechanic and routinely build my own PCs.

I can almost immediately understand any system by examining it and constantly reverse engineer stuff.

I'm not accusing anyone just commenting on how sad the world's become and also that we already have Replicants from Blade Runner.

Or maybe it's a sign that there's enough work for anyone with a specialization to stay busy for 60+ hours a week at their job without straying outside and it also comes down to accountability in a large organization, which you don't necessarily have with a hobby.

Could, say, Taco possibly figure out how NPC scripting works? Or Zero handle website coding? Or Trendy handle broken content.

Maybe. Probably, I'd wager. But then you have a lot of hands dabbling in tasks that someone else is responsible for.

Say you had to fire someone. Or that you just had to DOCUMENT or UPGRADE something. When you have a couple hundred people at a company, it could be a nightmare to keep track of who did what and where they did it. This means specialization in addition to ID badges and personal logins, none of which is an issue for one person (or even two or three or five or maybe even ten people) doing a small project, particularly as a hobby.

You ever worked a job as a cashier? Or a waiter? Those jobs have personal logins now too and there's good reason why one person doesn't use another person's login. If you have theft, you need to trace it. If you're punching in an order and it's correct and someone else changes it to be incorrect, you need to know who did what or you can never diagnose a problem. Any task worth doing well is a task worth limiting who gets their hands on it.

Made a sig based on what I have here. The text is awkwardly big, but I'll get used to it. The html code it generates and enforces... well, I wrote better html in high school 15 years ago.

Attempted to change my avatar. I assume this is done by clicking "Change my Picture" in the menu on the left on the Signature page. All I got appeared to be an Arcgames homepage embedded in an Arcgames homepage, complete with a scrolling list of games. I guess changing the Avatar does not work.

Visited the new forum. Sure, the STO forums are not there yet, but I was still able to see what it will eventually look like. At the side, it asks me (showing my Arcgames name) to log in, and provides a link I can click to "Sign in with Arcgames.com". Clicking this to log in only reloads the page, and leaves me not logged in.

For some reason, the /en/ forums have non-English language forums also.

So out of everything I tried, the only thing that worked was changing my signature.
    :(

I went to my account, preferences, change my picture and it worked fine ( http://perfectworld.vanillaforums.com/profile/picture).

As far as I am aware selecting the language does not restrict the forums to English only posts but it is the language of your control panel and the rest of the Arc site.

There are a bunch of new facilities for users and moderators to use and the forums will be a lot more mobile friendly too.

Not to be annoying, but your link is directed to http://www.arcgames.com/en/games.

Would love to check out the actual site, before passing judgement.

EDIT: Found a workaround through the Star Conflict forums to access my forum page.

Got a question about forum signatures. I don't see an "Upload Picture" button, just an insert link. I can temporary link the sig pic from these forums, but will this link continue to exist after the merge? If not: upload pic button please...

    EDIT:
Second question. Do we keep the 120 sec/post rule? Cause please remove that.

firefox (latest, autoupdates itself), and i run ghostery on it (latest, blocks cookies, any cookies which keeps out those annoying adverts and tracking cookies). interestingly firefox has a setting which tells a site you dont wish to be monitored, and yet i find on daily 10-12 tracking cookies monitoring my movements.

    nothing more then that.

Log in on the normal Arc site (top right), et voila, you're logged in.

It's pulling user data from the Arc site too, so if you set your avatar in your Arc profile, et voila it's there on Vanilla too. If you stop thinking of it as a stand alone forum (it seems to be bridged with ARC) you'll find the migration a lot easier to cope with.

When moderation and administration of a forum becomes more and more difficult due to features not moving forward with the times, then it's time to change your forum system. Glitches are to be expected during the early days of a move, it's a lot of work, especially when automated scripts only do a partial job and leave you having to do manual database edits... But heh, folks are still complaining from when things were migrated to this forum, it's to be expected that folks will once again complain. ;) I still remember the complaints when the site went ARC, and broke away from the traditional banner + body design of old. lol

It just uses a detection script to identify that you're using a mobile device, and switches the forum over to a mobile friendly (ie. simplified) layout, complete with good old hamburger menu. ;) I use a similar system on my own websites, as the number of people accessing sites from mobile devices is a HUGE audience that you really can't ignore now.

I did find the Choose File button for the avatar. Now looking at my forum signature. That is where there is only a link option. Right now, the entire signature thing confuses me a lot, but I might just get used to it. But there is no option right there for a forum signature picture upload. Just a forum signature picture link.

Why use Arc when you have Steam? I mean it does what Steam already does minus the sales and the games and greenlight and [insert stuff here]. On Arc there's no one, while on Steam there's everyone including those who are playing other games.

And on Steam I get to have intelligent banter :P

Correct, Vanilla is completely tied into Arc.

And yes, the current forums make things very difficult to moderate - vanilla will allow us to do more.

Next week we do expect there to be a problems, no move of this scale (all PWE game forums moving into one) will go absolutely smoothly, but we're going to be doing what we can to keep things working as much as possible.

Because they're not the same thing perhaps? Steam been a game delivery system owned by Valve, you still have to have a PWE (ARC) login though to play PWE games. ARC is both PWE's game delivery system AND it's user account and community system. You don't even want to imagine the nightmare it would probably be to have Valve/Steam take over the account management side. It's bad enough when a game just changes publisher!

You didn't quite get it. I can download STO on Steam and get to have the Steam Overlay which lets me chat with my Steam mates. Arc is a desert compared to it. Additionally I don't get to have two platforms at once.

Arc login... Uh I just write the password and be cool with it in the launcher. Lol. Steam wins, period.
