The new Iconian rep Radiant armor costume is by far the best such visuals yet in the game. It looks like Space Channel 5, super retro pulp, which is what Star Trek was, is, and always will be. It's a space fantasy like Buck Rodgers. It's Horatio Hornblower in space, with a dash of superhero comics, sprinkled with philosophy.

    ...

These people tend to like space marines and drab all-black uniforms, angry faces, shaved heads, biceps, corruption, and guns -- lots of guns

I wouldn't go that far, Buck Rogers- yes. Star Trek- not so much although it did have (and continues to have) oddball designs. However in general, you're right. This split in the fanbase is notable and along the lines you mention.

Now STO for the most of its run has appealed to the second group and the game includes over-sized weapons and super military visuals that they can continue use to use even with these new items.

So what they are objecting to is two fold:
    1. Some new isn't specifically just for them
    2. OMG, they might run into people who are in their oh so important opinion, are doing Star Trek Wrong

    To this I say.

    1. The world doesn't revolve around you. You have happy stuff now, use it.
    2. Star Trek has been done wrong in general for decades and in this game for five years now. It won't get better. Wait till next season, maybe things will improve for you.

I wonder how long will we wait until they rename STO into Mass Effect online. We already had the Reapers (Iconians, same voice modulation, pretty much the same enemy and speech), the holographic armor parts, the citadel (ESD, they never hide the fact it was inspired by the citadel in the last revamp), the collectors (Elachi), and now EDI's suit.

I have a Ferengi alt that flies a rainbow-beam Risian Cruiser. He's my exchange character, and I've got him setup as garish as possible.

I'm considering these armors for his crew.

    Considering.

    They may be just...too much.

At least armor visuals are optional though. I'd rather a bad "optional" visual than no visual at all. I'm sure the armors will be a hit with some.

Also second the suggestions that we be able to kitbash armors from owned costumes - would make life much better. :)

It also serves as a litmus test for dividing so-called "Trekkies" into two distinct camps that hate each other. The fanbase is divided between those who want Star Trek to be a military sim (typically vets and contractors), and those who love the utopian and classic adventure aspects of Trek (light sci-fi & fantasy fans).
I lean strongly towards the latter category. Yet I certainly don't hate people who want it to have aspects of a military sim -- in fact, their contributions enrich the setting overall.

And I think this armor is extraordinarily ugly.

To me it feels like they were going for the look of the Iconian that vaped those Klingons.

I don't think they came close to nailing it but that's what they look like to me.

I want to jump on this a second. How do we know an iconian vaped the Klingon High Council?

What we saw was a dark mysterious something appear, spoke some threats. Then when challenged it waved its arms and light appeared around the council and they vanished. I did not see anyone with a tricorder out. So how do we know that was really an iconian and not say a hologram? And for all we know the council was beamed away and not disintegrated. (They did the same thing to Picard and it is a trick in a Romulan mission as well. So it is a known canon thing that can be done.

That WAS my thought as well as to what they were aiming for but if that's what releases in game, I will not ever consider wearing it. It makes even Seven's catsuit look tame, with the apparent nipple action going on. O_o

I have to take pride in the aesthetics of what my toons are wearing. Nor am I willing to wear something that will easily be converted using the right color combos into "Naked Armor." The troll potential with this armor is extreme. I just cannot wear this ever.

The lame Iconian rep armor design is exactly the type of thing we have come to expect when Cryptic decides to rush through more unneeded content on top of multiple events. Little or no actual thought went into a rational design with some visual correlation to Iconian design, so we get a slightly-modified version of the "jacket, tight" + science officer mod for most faction uniforms as the "new" rep armor. Guess what? You can have it; I'm not going to embarrass my BOff's or captain by making them wear a 'Frisco Hallowe'en costume...

I don't understand what you people are complaining about.

This looks SO much better than the other clubbing outfit.

Like I said in the other thread, I like the armor. BUT.
The circles around the male pecs are horrible. Man boob feelings, do not like.

On the other hand, the visor is REALLY nice. I want to use that with other outfits.

Just curious, will there even be a way to turn off the armor visuals off, I rather fight in my undies than put something on with Neon lights and Glitters like Twilight, lol. :D

I'm gonna reserve full judgement until I see what the customization options are, particularly for the colors. It's possible that with more subdued, and less neon, color options, the armor sets might not look too terrible, and one could even make them look a little bit more like the Herald armor that the artists sort of seem like they were trying to base the look off of. The guy on the left in this picture, for example, almost looks like he's sporting less spiky Herald armor.

But yeah, otherwise, the new suits are a bit too garish and "techy" for my tastes, and I probably will stick to the Omega set for ground armor, looks-wise.

This. The breast circles would turn me off from ever wanting to enable visuals for that armor on any male character.

But if we could turn off the neon glow and make the lines less visible I could probably deal with it. Hopefully it will be like some of the other armor pieces and allow you to customize and use only the bits you want.

Yeah, I am staying with my Counter-Command armor on my Cardassian as far as armor goes. I actually modified the color scheme to make it look like a much-needed overhaul on the first uniform the Cardassians ever were seen in.

My other toon when I use armor on him will continue to use his Undine Lobi armor.

Makes you wonder why they restrict the club clothing, and release this armor. Which is pretty much the same.

The looks are weak, true. But the utility of the armors are still subpar from fleet offerings, tbh.

Now, if you could mix and match these parts with other rep armors, I'd be in. But that's too much work, right?

Just remember what happend to those Klingon's who stood against the Iconian on Qonos. They were all killed in a flash. If you want to defeat the Iconians then you have to push the designs of your technology to the limits to have any chance of fighting them!

There is nothing Star Trek in these designs at all. I'm all for a loose interpretation being non-canon but they've jumped the shark and made the design non-Trek completely.

I'm not sure what this game is even trying to be at this point.

i mean since this new outfit doesn't have any star trek feel to it at all (imo) can we just get the Gallian Militia outfits from Valkyria Chronicles? Oh and some of the female hairstyles too?

Does this mean you're going to try and approximate Alicia, or Selvaria, or Varrot (to name a trio of examples)? Do let me know if you do; I've already run across Imca.

If you're going to ask for that, might as well go for the complete package, seeing as Sega seems to have failed at doing stuff with the IP despite all the potential. In 'motion', it looks like a third-person shooter... they could've rolled with that and given us something akin to Battlefield Heroes - all the classes, unlocks, etc. are already there. Or maybe take a higher view and spawn something akin to EndWar (the original, not the unnatural MOBA 'remake'). But nooo...

You're not wrong, but one of those carries more emphasis than the other. Sometimes you have to shout to be heard.
Self-inflicted reducto-ad-absurdium tends to negate whatever point you were trying to make by causing the potential audience to ignore you.

I'm surprised there wasn't a copyright infringement on that Starlord outfit. It was pretty blatant.

On-topic: No thanks on the design. I don't want to throw the designer under the bus, but this is the opposite of "good". Also, who approved this?

Uh, gasmask mooks have been around for a very long time mate, and that outfit was suppose to invoke the familiarity of the Schutzstaffel, I mean, just look at their uniforms:

    https://fellowshipofminds.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/uniforms-ss-ill2.jpg

That's from seventy years ago, pretty sure the patent ran out.

There is also the Helghast now that I think about it:

    http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/Jordep94/Decorated%20images/Helghast_Shock_Trooper.jpg

So actually, they didn't rip off Starlord, Starlord ripped off the Helghast, or the TRIBBLE Secret Police.
