This sounds good. Glad I hadn't spent any of my Spec points yet. Since I don't have many. I will use them wisely. With this, I will hold off a little longer until this new feature is live.

If you want to put them into the Pilot primary you may as well stick them in the secondary now, since that'll all go towards it (for the first 15 points anyway) and Rock and Roll is useful for things like not getting hit by various NPC AOEs like the CE's shockwave or Donatra's Thalaron pulse.
NOOOOOO.... Don't touch it. It's not broken. The last thing we need is for the devs to take there infamous nerf bat to this skill. Just let us keep the pilot as it is.
Don't **** with things that aren't broken.
How is this change breaking something that isn't going to change, and only getting expanded on?
Ya'all with the thorns in yer side about how cryptic does stuff, need to realize, staff changes have happened, a long with a lot of positive changes in the right direction.
This is one of them. Get rid of the "AAAACKKKK" its cryptic.... "feeling", because yah dont need it anymore, I used to have it.
Maybe do some research or something i dunno... This company has gone a LONG way in the past few months since delta rising was launched, and NO i didnt like it, at first.
Keep negging, your gonna make em do another nerf like the Mark Nerf on dil weekends, just to spite us, when they get fired, or "promoted".
You need to be slotting the high experience doff missions. I get at least 2 points a week, and can get almost a point a day on double xp weekends.
Think about that for a moment.
It takes a total of 90 spec points to max out all the specializations were currently have. At 2 points per week it will take you 45 weeks to max everything out. There are only 52 weeks in a year. With season 10 pilot will be getting an additional 15 spec points, and probably commando since they said any spec can be slotted as a primary. Edit: OK. It seems for some reason there is no mention of Commando specialization being made available as a primary, only Pilot and the other 2 will be available for primary and secondary. (I guess Commando isn't very popular, especially with all the players who despise ground combat.)
So we're going from 90 spec points to max out what we already have to 120. And at 2 points per week it would take you 60 weeks to max out everything, that's several weeks more than a year! And that's just for 1 character.
Even if you could grind 10 points per week it would take 9 weeks (more than 2 months) to max what we currently have, 12 weeks after season 10 launches.
It takes a little over a month to max out the reputation system WITHOUT sponsorship. With the daily bonus marks you could do 6 missions that qualify each day and work on all 6 reps at the same time.
I'm not even getting 1 specialization point per week. I like the system but the grind is horrible so I'm not even trying. What skill points I get is what I get. Eventually I'll earn a spec point here and there.

Correction, that's from 90 to 105 since we already have 15 to put in to Pilot. Or were you including the potential Commando Spec. tree as well?

Yes, this is exactly the point of the system, and by not grinding it you are doing it as it was intended. It's not meant to be fast and easy to fill, it's meant to keep "levels" earned past cap from going into oblivion and to act as an alternate means of character advancement. This is also the reason gear upgrades past MK XIV Purple are so steep.
Did you even read the Dev Blog? These changes open up new options, without removing or altering anything you can currently do.
I have to say, I cant find a negative - and I tried. This sounds like a great addition. if it wasnt for a lot of other TRIBBLE y'all would be applauded and praised.
If I choose to max out pilot and earn the improved trait, then find that I prefer a different primary and switch pilot back to secondary...will I get to keep the improved trait from pilot?
Following this thread, I now understand the rampant negativity on the forums:
Nobody reads the dev blogs. They catch a few sentences then rush over here to complain. And they want to be able to get everything quickly, instead of understanding that in an MMO, when the grind is done, so's the game 'till the next update.

That's SOME of it. There's a history here, but that doesn't follow the topic.
I like these changes to specializations. I still think the concept of specializations as a whole undid the whole reason traits were limited, but I like the additional flexability.
Without going through all the posts, the change seems to be a good addition, especially with this being an addition to space abilities. The issue I have it that this only adds to the burden of acquiring spec points. There really needs to be a change in how quickly these are gained or STO is only provide more evidence to the pessimistic assumption that all the focus is on the metrics that are produced by constant grinding for a very slow pace of advancement in the post-DR game schema.
I'll grant that it does feel like a mountain sometimes, so to continue with the metaphor, there's a reason we accord people in the history books a special recognition for climbing Everest. The whole part about adding spec options as fast or faster than they can be earned helps keep if feeling more like your captain is being a specialist than a hoarder. At the current xp rate, I have to decide with each point earned whether or not I want to plow it into commando/command or save it for any future trees or alterations.
Well not everyone is expected to get to the top of Everest at some point either.
That said, I made it to the point that I can train my First Officer in her natural Intelligence role as is proper.
I'm just saying that it feels like no progress is being made at all.
But maybe it's all the events. I personally play regular missions less during big events. Before it didn't make as big a difference as we weren't earning xp anyway. Maybe I just need to change it up.
An increase to the xp rate would be nice, but nothing on the order of quadrupling/factor of ten which is sometimes requested in a hyperbolic manner...spec trees should rightly be a long-term goal, not a weekend project. It is perfectly possible to get 2-3 points a week...I keep 6/8/12 hour projects burning in the background during the workday and gather as many of the 15min/1hr exploration cluster supply missions as I can when logged on (a crit on some of the rare 15 min missions can net the best part of 1000 xp, so running ten at a time, 4 batches per hour is as much as 40k, but may be more like 20k considering crit rates and base reward rates).
Hey man, let me tell you. Klingon side Suppress Gorn Uprising, That mission is Cash. I DOFF as a matter of course just because I love managing my crew (Assassin's Creed Assassin missions, loved those too) so it's just been a pleasant joy how solid DOFFing has been to progression. And I'm collecting mats constantly so no problem there.
But clearly the gain could stand to be higher. People were saying the double XP of the bonus weekends should be the standard and I agree with that. Over a year to fill all the trees seems a bit excessive for the average player.
Let's say i get 30 points on Intel spec, unlocking the ship trait. Do i keep the trait if i put intel as secondary or not ?
Yes you do.
This isn't different from now, you don't lose the ship trait once you've slotted it just because you have Command active.

Although the question was asked to the devs, as I've just bought specialization points on the tribble test server to test out the changes, I can answer this. You will keep the improved trait.
I would imagine not. One typically drinks Jamesons to numb the section of the brain responsible for deciphering text. :P

EDIT:
If your having problems getting specialization points, here is the trick to get about 2 a day, from playing a normal persons game time ( 2-4 hours ).
Rotate the four Tau Dewa Combat planets, ( Carrya, Japori, Beta Thoridor, and the other one, i only do the three cause the other one is to far out of the way for me... )
With an Argala.
Have fun talking to yer buddies while you just murderlize stuff....
Hey want a challenge, and some extra points, turn up the difficulty to elite.
Toss in a few ques here, and there, while yer doing DOFF ASSIGNMENTS and WALLAH, 1-2 skill points a day.
Ive pissed around most of the day and made 1.5 levels.
TO the complainers, convenience is there, you just need to stop complaining, read the dev blogs, and enjoy the game.
We still have no plans or intentions to release Specialization Respecs. You can earn as many Specialization Points as there are abilities to purchase, so there is no such thing as a choice that cannot be corrected by earning another point.
Translation: "We're gonna keep putting in new cool specs that are objectively better than older specs so you always have to keep grinding. We don't want you to have fun when you grind, though, so we're adding cooldowns to literally everything in the game. Oh, and reducing exp across the board. Go play our ****ty content and give us more money!"
Yeah, no, sorry. ****ty model is ****ty. Give respecs while there's still a game to give respecs in.
First, I love the fact that the expanded pilot spec will now reward me for constantly humping, er, "scraping" enemy ships. Something I do all the time anyways.

You know....back when New Romulus rep was the only game in town, Tau Dewa was in my daily rotation. I mean that was my entire Romulan Rep, tier 1 to 5. Now they've added dilithium and if I need a starbase drop off I can just cruise to Delta Command through the gateway....it's not a bad idea now that you've brought it up (they really need a thoughtful intellectual emote).
"Rise like Lions after slumber, In unvanquishable number, Shake your chains to earth like dew, Which in sleep had fallen on you-Ye are many they are few"
yay screwed again..... we can't reset specializations as far as I can tell and they keep changing and adding specializations....
When i started and made 60th I only had intelligence to choose from as a primary, so that's where my points went. Then they added Command which had even better powers but I can't switch, and now Pilot is going to become a primary............ This system is Soooooo messed up.
Yes I theoretically can gain all the specialization powers, but it's not fun to grind out 20 levels just to change which powers I want to use, ESPECIALLY levels 61-80 since it takes so damn long to level when you get that high up.
How about a Top Gun 3-Pack featuring a T6 Defiant, B'Rel, and T'Varo? Mind you, the BoP still desperately needs improvements to match the other two ship classes, but that selection would allow players that want their canon ships to have that option... and those are exactly the set that come to mind when I think of Piloting.
Oh, and along with bringing the B'Rel up to snuff... how about a 2-piece set bonus for the Defiant that grants a battle cloak if both the T6 Gimmick Console and Console - Cloaking Device are slotted? That would help bring the Defiant into closer competition to a T'Varo or improved B'Rel.
Now if only we can earn those spec points a wee bit faster...
Very much this. I love the idea of being able to build my characters in more diverse ways... it would just be nice if the rate of progression allowed me to build my characters (<-- emphasis on the plural, if the bold/underline/italic didn't manage to draw the eye) in more diverse ways.
With each passing day I wonder if I stepped into an alternate reality. The Cubs win the world series. Donald Trump is President. Britain leaves the EU. STO gets a dedicated PvP season. Engineers are "out of control" in STO.

This.
Basically for anyone paying attention they turned Intel and Space into 30 points of which you don't get to use half of during your activity at the moment (space or ground) and now are offering you the chance to grind another 30 levels to replace that inefficiency.
It sucks, and is IMO worse than anything that's happened to this game in the last year including all the DR pain.

Yeah...uh...have you actually been to Tribble to look at what 30 in Pilot gets you compared to what you get from 30 in Intel or Command?
Now...if you were looking at the Pilot BOFF abilities...I'd ask you if you needed some Excedrin.
Lol depending how powerful shield scraping is, it could be a very disturbing power.
"Captain we are running into the other ship!!!"
"Don't worry I have a specialization that sucks their shields away if we do. Continue ramming our ship into theirs!!!!!"
"What?!?! Next You'll tell me Captain that if you have me roll the ship, we'll become completely impervious to damage!"
"Good idea ensign! Engage a rock and roll of the ship maneuver, as we smash our shields into theirs"
-Ensign proceeds with maneuver but on the next mission all the Bridge Officers have decided to leave their post, leaving the Captain dumbfounded as to how they mysteriously left their post without his knowledge. As the Captain calls them from their quarters to stand bridge duty, he begins to notice with dismay that all his engineering officers have decided to all prepare to use emergency power to engines.:eek::eek:
that made me lol. a lot. i was cackling like Mark Hamill's Joker
This doesnt interest me in the slightest I just slot the spec points in and if I get a point then I get one if I dont then no biggy I'm not going to waste time grinding argala and other patrol missions to get a point. I play what I want when i want for as long as I want. the best thing they could have done was make spec points more avaialble so it wasnt to much of a grind but cryptic never does think logically about these things

Okay, there is way too much to read already, so can someone answer a question?
ARE THE POINTS I INVESTED INTO PILOT SECONDARY LOST TO ME NOW THAT THIS IS BECOMING A PRIMARY SPECIALIZATION OR WILL THE SECONDARY SPECIALIZATION STILL EXIST?
Because if the secondary specialization is disappearing then I want my points refunded. I have no use for any toon with any points wasted in something I can't use. I have one toon (of 16) that I've managed to get intel spec completed in and that's it. My tolerance for how boring this game has become won't let me progress any faster.
And could you really not think of anything else to give a specialization to? Torpedo spec, cannon spec, beam spec anyone? Recon spec, signals spec, research spec?
Dear devs: The bit where you have foundary missions scattered about and we actually sail around finding missions was awesome. I'd love to do that. However you killed it by insisting I have to level again. Like most of my fleet I would rather grind, or just not play STO anymore, than spend money for those ridiculous XP boosters. No, you won't force us to buy them. No, give it up. No... and yes, I still hate grinding.
Solution - Give us all every skill level for free on every toon. Forget this bizarre attempt to make us grind, and let us go where only foundary designers have gone before... with toons that are not second rate.
So your changing game rules again. Will we be able to reselect currently spend spec points as a result of that change or may we just have to live with it and grind accordingly in response maam?

The fact that specializations will now be primary or secondary didn't mentally click with me on the first read.
My bad....
That said: I agree that they should do the same thing with commando. It would be more fair and consistant to do so.
