So older ships CANNOT be upgraded to the same as the new Tier 6 class, HOWEVER, Right now it looks like the old ships CAN be upgraded to similar stats of the new Tier 6 - but just won't have access to all the new "awesome" abilities and powers of the new Tier 6 class/line
The ONLY way I can see this working out is, if the stats after the upgrade are slightly higher than those of the T6 ships in order to make up for the missing T6 abilities.
So you'd end up with your upgraded ship that is perfectly capable of handling all the new endgame content, only that you don't get to play with some shiny new abilities.
If upgraded stats are on par with those of T6 ships, T5 ships will still be missing the edge that T6 abilities provide. In other words, they'd still be obsolete and the entire upgrading system would be a pointless waste of development ressources.
I'll hold off on judgement - I'm not fussed if my Fleet Advanced Escort isn't the most powerful ship in the game as its not now anyway but it will need to absolutely be viable in terms of stats even if it lacks these new powers (which could be TRIBBLE anyway and not worth using for all we know).
For such a hot topic in this game - and of all them, it really is the biggest due to the money issue - it is disgraceful they had no PR or blog to directly address this the moment the news dropped.

Think of the new T6 ships like what Scam Box, Lobi and Fleet level T5.5 ships did to RA ships.
RA ships are still competitive (you can put the highest gear on them), but they are still obsolete compared to T5.5 ships..
Until info is released on them, that is the only comparison I can make at this time.
thinking more of this, one question come in mind: do players get a free t5 ship? while porgressing, players could choose from specific ships for free, every 10 levels except 50. now the cap goes to 60, it should mean that we can choose at lvl50 as well. if that's true what geko said, and the difficulty will be "rebalanced" to lvl60, players in RA ships could have a hard time. not everyone has the luxury to fly in fleet/box ships.
Defiant
RnD and upgrade needs less RNG. Less lottery. Something has to change.
All this doom and gloom.
We don't know much of anything at this point.
To be honest, this talk of a new ship class and new boffs sounds more like a side-grade. I also wouldn't be surprised if the new boff type can be fitted into a universal slot. That is good for lockbox ships.
If these new tier 6 ships have similar stats and the same 10 consoles as fleet ships, I don't see a huge problem. Aside from that, do bear in mind, while RA ships aren't the best around anymore, they can still fight just fine at max level, so I am not seeing why a new tier of ship has to instantly outclass the current t5.5 we have now.

Without more info it's really hard to say. On the one hand they would make most of the ships in the store pretty much worthless if they are not on par with the Tier 6 class/line. On the other hand if the new T6's special abilities/powers which Al talked about are not really enticing - why would people buy them in quantity?
The way I think it will happen:
1)All the older ships will be upgraded to similar stats as the new Tier 6 class/line - for Free:eek::rolleyes: While this does not make them a lot of money - it saves them from a messy backlash from all the existing players(for the most part)
2)The new Tier 6 class/line will get some new powers/abilities which Mr. Rivera said will be "exclusive" to the new ships - that will make them seem better and make people want them. These abilities might be cool and somewhat useful - but will be mostly gimmicky and not game breaking level above your old upgraded ships.
"You slobs are not opening your wallets wide enough. Your credit cards are not maxed out paying for our content, so we're going to make you stupid rubes pay out the rectal TRIBBLE yet again to stay 'current'. Suckers!"

Paying 20 - 30 usd for a new C store ship is a breath of fresh air compared to lockbox ships.
Eh. Who am I kiddin'. I'm KDF, We probably won't get anything!
Can upgrade T5 - T5.5 Ships, at cost, to be near equivilant towards a T6?
Now this part is theorycrafting....
The mention of the new boff type makes me think the T6 Ships will be the only ones with seating for new Boff Type, call it XO for now as an example.
XO gets new, special, shiny abilities that you can train that will make people want the new T6 Ships since can only be slotted on T6 ships?
Boffs, the new console. I can see it now, instead of lockbox consoles and traits, Boffs with special abilities for new T6 ships.
Prepare yo wallets.

Some interesting theories.
They need to sell these ton of new ships for 2500 zen - so to do that they need to make them "better" then the old ships - or why would you buy the new ones vs "upgrading"?
Making the Tier 6 line "special" over the T5 upgrades would make them a lot more money then just charging a couple bucks to make the T5's into T6 equilvant.
It makes the most sense from a business point to have the Tier 6 a new and special class/line that you can only get buy spending another $25 bucks per ship to get.
I keep coming back to the most relevant comparison: Apple Iphones
- every 6-12 months Apple puts out a new Iphone for another $500+ which is about 5-7% faster then the one just a few months before and has a few new features. Then half the people who had the version 5 - run out and get the version 6 - even though version 5 is for all practical purposes - just as functional/useful - as the new phone.

Cryptic is hoping for the same thing I am sure.
You should brush up on what Star Trek fans like. There's a thread or two that might help you get acquainted.

And they gotta sell them too without " completely " alienating the people who stubbornly want to keep using current lockbox ships. So seeing in that one Q&A compiled thread from info from the livestream about new boff type and mention of T6 gots shiny new things that people will WANT to buy them and use them over current stuff.
Just seems like the most logical conclusion. Make the T6 ships the only ships that can use the new boff type with whatever its special boff abilities will be.
Not to mention they'd still make money off the people wanting to keep using their expensive lockbox ship by charging for a " module" ( I'd guess. thats how you upgraded to fleet ships. New modules to buy! Whoopie! )

The new Tier 6 class/line being the only ones to have access to the new Boff - type - does seem like a popular theory.
One thing is clear - just from a common sense/business standpoint: THe new Tier 6 class will have to have something that makes them "seem" better - so that people will want to shelve their older ships and buy the new Tier 6 line.
I also expect all the older T5 c-store ships to be discounted - like a company clearing out old inventory.
...Given all of this... how good will these new T6 ships actually be? Also, why would lock box & Lobi ships be automatically "obsolete"? Out of the "box," these ships are good, but not great. You have to mod them with consoles...
I have a suspicion that they mean just that, consoles, when they say "upgrade". I think it will be: Buying a T5 ship is buying a T5 ship, just like buying a costume is buying a costume - MkXIII & MkXIV gear will be where it's at.
Simple really... 6 > 5. Were these new ships just a new class with new abilities, that's how they would have been described, just like the Dyson ships are a different class but are still Tier 5/5.5. These aren't. These called Tier 6.
Just my 2 EC, I'm betting the Tier 6 ships will be superior. There wouldn't be much incentive to buy them otherwise.
The biggest issue is the lack of details. Geko said that people will want to buy the new Tier 6 ships when they see how great their new powers and abilities are - which will be unique to the T6 class/line. This can only mean they will be at least slightly superior to our old ships - which makes logical sense - every new ship is a bit better than ones from before.
However, since ships are really the heart of the game - they should not let this speculation fester for too long.

They are being ambiguous, vague and deceptive on purpose. They want to squeeze as much profit from current gear as possible before X2. It is shameless really how they manipulate the player base. And perhaps this is what ticks me off the most!
"With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censored, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably."

Same here.

Is funny how they think just because they say 3 years worth of gear won't be obsolete, we just going to take their word for it and relax.
Even minus their track record people naturally want the information so they can make up their own minds - I don't get how they assume what they say comforts anyone.
Not until you read people coming into threads defending developers as life depended on it at every turn, then you "ah, so you talking to those people not me"
I think they should have either had a blog ready or simply not said anything about t6 until the blog was ready.
They could have picked something else that wasn't important and then went deep with that for example the "story" or talk canon for 18 hours to sell the expansion...
A little god complex to me it seems. Maybe clumsy, or rushed, or unorganized?
Like they picture themselves showing up and then just have to say "expansion is going to be good" and then those people will be on the forum: "the expansion is going to be good, the developers already said so !!!!111"
That's my favorite one, "because they said so"
Yeah well that isn't how things work us grown-ups we'd like to think for ourselves thank you

They could have mentioned new ships, shown new ships, etc, etc, etc...without mentioning T6 at all. Then drop the T6 info out in the blog, like you said.
Folks know there's power creep...we can look at the T5 ships to see that not all T5 ships are created anywhere near equal. So them kicking it up a notch for new T5 ships wouldn't have drawn the ire, eh? It's been a chronic thing, the creep, so folks have developed a tolerance for it over the years.
Could have gotten through the weekend...then gotten into the blogs when more information would have been available...and dropped the T6.
As is, they dropped out the T6...an acute change rather than the chronic change...and yeah, bam - what's going on is going on. Then again, aren't all of us forum folks supposedly just whiners anyway? If we're not fanbois tossing attaboys for every little thing, we're just crybabies to be ignored...meh.

Whenever Al says anything ship related my ears pick up and I get most of what he said on the 1st listen through. I have over 20 T5 c-store ships and 10 fleet ships. I also have 15 un-openned lock box ships that I was using a store of EC "value" - that is taking a big hit and I don't know how easy it will be to sell them now without a substantial discount.
Regardless - I am actually not too freaked out about it. I am just reporting what I heard and what I think. I have not really been one side or the other on this topic. I realise that some day the game will end and it's all just digital dust. I have put about $400 US into the game and gotten 4000 hrs of play - that's about 10 cents per hour of entertainment - darn cheap by any measure or standard for entertainment.
So all and all - I am not too worried - but I do agree that they really need to work on better communication of such important topics.

The Odyssey class starship (completely FAN designed) was never in the shows or movies. Not once. Not ever.
So if I handed you a 5 dollar bill and asked for 6 ones in return, you'd be cool with that? Side grade and all?

Which is kind of funny because the Galaxy will be getting a 2nd "Upgrade" in one year!! Of course even the upgrade will still make it a sub-par ship:(
