I really want to know. If anyone see a bright future for STO or is STO going to go the way of Star Trek Galaxy ??
you are going to get trolled over this for no reason or someone coming along for post count. how would any of us know, only the executives of pwe know and they are not likely to state anything to ep or devs until that fateful day.
DOOOOOMM!!! :D
T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW. Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.
So much negativity in these forums. So many doom threads...
First Star Trek already had an initial following regardless of the game so it will always have that going for it. Second, there's still one more installment of the new movies coming out which might hook a few more 'tweens hooked into Trek. Also, all old school fans are really hoping to see a new series for the 50th anniversary and there might be some real hope for it happening from CBS.
Lastly, I don't think this game is going anywhere. Yes some things are going to be taken out but Cryptic isn't stupid either and it does listen to its players and I'm sure we'll see exploration back again in some form.
I'm not privy to STO zen sales numbers but my guess is that STO is still one of their top earners.

I think you'll find that most don't really take the question seriously because people have been predicting the doom of STO since before it's launch, a view that continues to be proven wrong.
Seriously though, no I don't think the game is on it's way out, and for the last year or so, the game (and least from my limited vantage point) has been in a state of growth. Last year, the game saw it's first expansion ever. This year, we have another on the way. In fact the frequency of updates has only increased. These are not the signs of a dying game. In fact last time I heard, STO is currently PWE's second most profitable MMO after Neverwinter.
STO, like all other MMOs, will eventually die, but I don't think it's with in the foreseeable future.
"IF" STO stays on the same track its on now. It would surprise me to see it getting a 6th ann. The constent habit of taking away content and not adding content. Taking away a players hard erned traits. Removing exploration from a exploration game. If they keep taking away stuff they are gonna have to make content just to be able to take it away.
To me, I don't understand why cryptic is delibrately hurting their game. If they wanna kill it. They should just announce a closing of the servers and give ppl a date on when its over. Right now, this strategy of cutting off a limb till they get to the head is just plain stuppied.
The Only thing that could save Sto right now is a huge addition to exploration and expansion 2.
Thats putting alot of trust into cryptic btw. If exp. 2 isn't the cream of the crop. I'll see you guys in some other game.
to be honest and fair while I do not think this game is going to be around for as long as other games, it isn't going anywhere in the near future.
cryptic has this nack for pulling their sh*t together right in the nick of time.
but cryptics/sto's poor quality, lack of content, and and over all need to do the opposite of what a healthy company would do (expand and improve) will be its undoing eventually.. when, who knows.. but eventually.
if things keep going the way they are, I would say 2 maybe 3 years left, and towards the end the game will have no real support.(like other failing games)..
this is multiplied by the fact that other free to play games that are pushing the envelope and spending the money to make a good game are making the competition harder.
its all about value, and for the money (I have spent, I cant speak on others, but I have to assume there are others like me) this game is not even remotely worth it.. if it were not star trek, I would not be playing it.. and as I have said in other posts.. it has been roughly a year since I last spent a dime on this game, and they will continue to get nothing from me until they up their quality and standards.. (and I know from reading ingame chat and the forums that I am most certainly not the only one who feels this way).
so yeah, my prediction is a few more years of watching cryptic try to figure out what to do with this game before they give up... (cause honestly, that is the feeling I get from the develpers, its like they have no clue how to make this game good, and they keep throwing darts hoping to hit a bullseye. stahl and I spoke about this once on the forums, saying they were having trouble finding the right formula, and he agreed. I would say they still have not found it).

Hrm... Your two "big" removals? One, a matter of balance. The other, "meh" content that many wouldn't miss if not for the moaners. In fact, with the removal of clusters, it'll be one less load screen for me to sit through in order to reach the DOff missions in each sector! Yay!!!
Meanwhile, as already stated, we've just over a year ago seen an expansion to the game, and another is on the way, not to mention regular season storyline additions, as well as updates to some older storylines. Oh, and a new crafting system about to roll out.
You're gonna quit now because there has been a "decrease" in content? That'd be...
How many of you feel that STO is on the way out and won't be around for it's 10th ann. or even its 7th ??
The way thing are going in my eyes and my own POV. STO has 3 years at most.
Before PWE pulls the plug on STO.
Well what do you guys and gals think ??
The average life expectancy of an MMO is 6 years. For every MMO you can name that has gone 10, 12, 15, etc there is one you have never heard of that lasted 1 or 2 - and I would say that most of those 10+ year MMOs are very different today then they were 10 years ago when the Launched. Some of them have just evolved so slowly that you do not realize how much they have changed.
But beyond all that, who cares? The game will last as long as it lasts. As much as some people on the forum seem to hate this game I would think they will be glad when STO finally closes its doors. It is just a game. It is not our purpose for living.
I am not going to spend my time worrying whether or not a game I play as a hobby for fun will last another 3, 5, 7+ years. Heck, 3 years from now there could be a new Star Trek series on TV. I am not going to waste my time making prophecies. I need to focus on whether or not I am going to live another 3, 5, 7+ years.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.
Could our hopes and dreams for STO from that start been way to high for any gaming company to meet when it comes to producing an MMO based on STAR TREK.
Since STO was announced we have been asking for the stars when we should have asked for the moon then mars and then the sol system and then the stars byound.
What I means is that Cryptic should have been taking baby steps with STO. Instead a giant leap with what we got with STO.
Are we as Star Trek fans. To caught up with the dream and the unfillied possibilities of STO.
That nothing is going to be good enough. Compared to what we as Star Trek fans had dreamed STO could have been and what it is today.
Would we still have fiath to belive in another STO MMO. If another came out after this one oasted on.
Are our dreams to high when it comes to Star Trek and what it means to many of us ??
As long as Cryptic keep coming up with new grinds for people obsess over.... and keep adding new lock boxes for people to throw money at them...... it should keep going. but I can't predict the future, STO could be closed down tomorrow for all I know..... or it could still be here in some form in 10 years......... Look at WoW, its old... stale.... people have said its dieing... they have said that for years and they will be saying it for years..... just like this game.
I can bet that this will be the last expansion (or the 50th), but regular updates will happen for a few more years.
This and Star Trek continues is the only Star Trek out there and Star Trek is very popular.
Just not popular enough to fix the licensing issue
Are our dreams to high when it comes to Star Trek and what it means to many of us ??
The problem is that everyone's concept of Star Trek is different. If you say Star Trek to a group of people some flash on TNG, others TOS, some DS9, and so on. With over 700 episodes in syndication everyone's concept of Star Trek is different.
There are people who only want to pew-pew. There are people who want a simulator that allows them to walk around their ship and talk to crew. There are people who want to play Dabo and Poker - though I do not understand that one: a game in a game...
Take the 10 smartest Trek fans on the forum and you will have 10 different ideas of what STO should be. The internet has taken away a humans ability to compromise on anything. It is MY WAY or not at all.
Wow... I remember doom threads on the old forums.. this game isn't gonna make it blah blah blah...
STO has changed but Playing it since it's first incarnation til now... buncha cry babies.... there is so much more to the game than there was, they recruit stars from series past to lend there talents to the game..
It's not dying. Just because someone has played and become bored does not mean the game is doomed.. it means that person needs to take a break and come back!
There is tons of content to this game you just need to be willing to try different things.. so many people play the same ship types and playstyle over and over again and become bored.
The game will evolve.. like stated before they do listen to the players and adapt.. Exploration was not working as intended so yeah let them take it... they'll revamp someway and it will return in the future... maybe use user created foundry missions have them meet certain criteria and populate them randomly around the sectors... no doom here...
Perhaps when the new expansion is here we'll get another one of those charts showing numbers of captains and such. It won't show everything of course but perhaps comparing it with the previous version would give a basic idea of how things are looking?
As it stands though I think it's quite safe for now. Content, fixes and tweaks are being pumped out on a semi-regular basis and the next expansion is on the horizon. I'm sure plenty of players will flood back once it's here, even if for a few weeks of frenzied new content playing.
Really though it's best not to worry about it. It won't last forever that's for sure, so might as well enjoy/tolerate it while it's here.

Why is it that it would seem this response clould have been written at the same time as the OP? There is no evidence you are taking in the answers to your questions, you are just spewing more poorly worded, badly punctuated, inflammitory comments in an effort to add flames to the fire.
At least it would appear you pay closer attention to the spell checker than some... for the most part...

First of all, you can't always get what you want, nah ah. I believe that instead of having instant gratification and throwing our wrath at the developers we need to give constructive feedback, be patient (I know it is hard but it is worth it), and graciously utter our negative complaints. With some of the complaints I have seen in these forums and others, it would make me want to kill myself (which thankfully I do not want to do). I understand that STO fans can be passionate, but we should not bridle it and not throw it into the devs' faces. Secondly, we need to temper our expectations and as much as possible try to see the other side's expectations as well and try to balance ours. Thirdly, to understand that STO was not made in a day and it takes work to squash bugs, fix spelling errors, etc. So no I don't think STO will die soon and if it does I may mourn and weep, but I have Star Trek TV shows, movies, books, etc to watch or read. Plus, my life is not STO and is not solely focused on that. It is good to have new content, sometimes people like it, sometimes others don't, sometimes the majority likes it but the minority don't, and sometimes the minority likes it but the majority don't. Thanks and keep playing STO, just don't let it run your life. That is all.
2nd Major Expansion on the way at the end of the year.
Major revamp of the games most populated social zone very recently.
Increased size of Dev Team, in a studio that has been hiring.
Increased frequency of updates.
Whether people want to admit it or not, continual fixing of bugs and issues within the game.
Not the signs of a game on it's way out by any means.
All MMOs die eventually, but I see nothing indicating that STO is on it's way out anytime soon.
I agree with this in general. However, there are multiple space shooters being released in the next few months, which are likely to draw off a portion of the STO community and cut into revenue. At that point, the front-loaded expenditures have the potential to become liabilties for cryptic as a whole. The expansion is make or break.
How many of you feel that STO is on the way out and won't be around for it's 10th ann. or even its 7th ??
Ask again during Star Trek's 50th Anniversary.
I'd weigh three main factors:
1.) With the Star Wars movie relaunch on the horizon (and Disney's marketing), will Paramount/CBS decide to put more effort into the Star Trek property?
Will some other company try to pitch/create/run a new Star Trek-based MMO?
Consider this: Roberto Orci's effort (writing) the next movie will determine whether he's signed to direct. And the box office results will signal whether to make a stronger push into Star Trek TV properties,i imho, After all, ST:Nemesis and ST:Enterprise proved Trekkies/Trekkers won't watch ST just because it's ST.
On the flipside, if the movie is successful, Paramount/CBS may want a marketing shift AWAY from TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY and ENT in an effort to focus on the latest/greatest. Remember that J.J. Abrams had major issues with the licensing. (Use your favorite search engine to learn more. There are stories out there.)
2.) The license cost for PWE/Cryptic versus their business model/actual revenue. If this property makes money, then they'll have justification to continue with STO.
3.) Technology. Will the current game engine (including graphics) continue to attract and retain the players (aka customers)?
Logically speaking, STO continues as-is until the 50th Anniversary. Depending on the factors above, it will either continue (likely with a reduced playerbase and maintenance mode -- no major updates) OR end, in favor of a new Star Trek property focus.
Ask me the same question in two years. I may have a different answer. We'll see.
I still have some hope for STO. They did an excellent job when they added the Romulans Faction in Season 8. I think it was 8.
So if they can do it again with a new type of ground and space exploration setup. It could give a lot of STO players hope for the future of STO.
What goes into STO between now and the 5th ANN of STO.
Should show us what kinda lplayer base STO is still standing on.
I aslo I know that MMO's run like roller coasters. With peaks and valleies.
It's just that the vallies seam to get so low that we wonder what the Devs at Cryptic are going to do to get to the next peak or are they going to be at this lower level for a time before the next big season content push.
Comments
But I'm asking a real serious question here.
I'm not joking around.
I really want to know. If anyone see a bright future for STO or is STO going to go the way of Star Trek Galaxy ??
