I do not like the ARC website, it's not very intutional.
It's difficult to find things like the Forum. When coming from the PwE website, I end up in a loop going to the old STO website, which has the window to the new one, which redirects back to the PWE website. Have to use google to find the forum to log in and post.
And when I find a link to the new one, its quite messy and unintuitive. I can't tell which news is new or which is old. It's not even Star Trek anymore.
All in all, I find the ARC website to be unprofessional and would like them to restore the old Star Trek website. Because the more I deal with ARC, the more likely I'm convinced to leave Star Trek Online for Star Citizen, which actually listens to their community.
In the last few days i have that perception.
And i dont feel confortable with that.
Think somebody wanna forceme to take a desicion i dont wanna take.
With all the repect, i dont think that be right or nice.
But, like always Cryptic have the last word and thats all.
You're feeling that way because it was announced the day Arc entered alpha testing that they were going to eventually disable the standalone launcher, leaving only Arc and Steam to launch the software. There is no current planned date for this, but it will happen. You can either find a way to be comfortable with this, or find another online entertainment. I hope you'll go with Steam, but it's completely up to you.
That is because your ARE being pushing into using Arc (or steam), it is soon coming to a point where you will not have a choice.
If you have a problem with it, then you are just going to have to deal with it and realize A LOT of companies with multiple MMO's are doing it. NCsoft has already done it with their own, and that one is worse than even ARC.
Even WOW (well, Battle.net) has their own for all of their games.
personally I think it is total BS that Steam and ARC get special items that lifetime subs do not. Lifetime Subs are supposed to be the most loyal players getting the best perks, but steam players get a special Steamrunner escort, and ARC players get special uniforms. Total BS. Lifetime Subs should get all the perks. If steam gets a special ship, so should a life-sub. If ARC gets a uniform so should a life-sub, regardless of how we sign in.

The steamers payed for the Steamrunner Pack. You can do too. Just download Steam, start the STO Instalkation for a few moments until it has created the directories and then buy the Steamrunner Pack and you get a code you can enter in your account menu.
Are we sure there is going to be a choice between Steam and Arc? If I'm going to be forced to load Arc at some point down the road, I'd like to at least get the uniforms out of it. Otherwise, I'm sticking with Steam.

nope every one is guessing they wont make steam use it and i dont see why they would not make steam use it would not be the first steam game to do so most of my Assassin's Creed games use steam and also the ubisoft launcher so again i dont see why they would not make steam use it
For those interested, if you have an adblock plugin for your browser (I'm using Adblock Plus with Firefox) you can stop the Arc site redirect by adding global_redirect.js to the adblock filter list.
The statement has been made that Steam will remain a viable method for launching Cryptic games, even after the standalones fall. The original plan was to make it Arc or nothing, but there was, ah, a bit of blowback on that plan...

Yep that worked, for now, at least. Doubt we'll see any further updates to the news feed though. At least it gave me the opportunity to bookmark the Tribble Character Copy page for as long as that lasts...
Thank you for the time...

Cryptic, would you actulaly like me to spend actual Money? It's Simple:
Full, Story-driven, select from start 1-50 Klingon Side
Scrap current Lock Box & Lobi system for something more reasonable
Expand Dil and Rep/Fleet Marks to regular story content
What drugs are you smoking? Buying an LTS does not make someone a loyal customer/player. Spending money on a regular basis is what makes a player a loyal customer.
One thing or the other does in no way shape or form mean that anyone is entitled to anything more than every "freeloader" playing the game. The moment they decided to make the game free to play meant they abandoned the "customer" model. A LTS made sense back in the P2P days but nowadays you can throw as much money at PWE as you want - I'm actually not sure that's helping. Of course, it depends on what one expects from a game like this. If asia-grinding and paying ten to hundred times the amount of money to play a single "free" game is ones definition of fun and joy it's one thing...
^ Memory Alpha.org is not canon. It's a open wiki with arbitrary rules. Only what can be cited from an episode is. ^
"No. Men do not roar. Women roar. Then they hurl heavy objects... and claw at you." -Worf, son of Mogh
"A filthy, mangy beast, but in its bony breast beat the heart of a warrior" - "faithful" (...) "but ever-ready to follow the call of the wild." - Martok, about a Targ
"That pig smelled horrid. A sweet-sour, extremely pungent odor. I showered and showered, and it took me a week to get rid of it!" - Robert Justman, appreciating Emmy-Lou
Ok I am a bit late to the party but I had no reason to post on this topic up to now as it did not affect me. So here we go:
Arc client:
Well I have not tried it, so I can not give feedback on that one other than: I have
- steam
- origin
- battle.net
already, necessary to access other games. I also had gamestop and that was the point I decided enough is enough. I do not want another spyware/adware-client that just is a drain on my system, thank you.
I download StarTrek online from steam (as a gamer you just can not get around them anyway) and have no inclination whatsoever to change that unless Startrek becomes unavailable at steam, at which point I will evaluate how badly I want to play STO and probably uninstall it before installing the next garbage-store (no offense to arc, I consider all stores like that garbage).
The new website:
From a design, standpoint I have to say it is sub-standard. The old page was far from perfect but compared to this unsorted pile of pictures it was stellar indeed.
It reminds me of comparing youtube to dailymotion. I may not like youtube with its last changes but it has a structure to it that dailymotion is just lacking.
I highly doubt a new player will get any useful information out of the new page before growing so frustrated he/she just leaves.
Oh and a little tip from one Engineer to another:
... "you might just want to revisit the optimization-cycle on that one" ...
it feels like me sitting with my old 56.6k modem not my current 75mbit line. nostalgia? oh definitely, but fun? ... not so much.
also currently on ie11 the page just loads the same topics over and over when scrolling down, so you should probably do another round of testing on your scripting in terms of browser compatibility too.
Verdict:
1. I hope you do not plan to make the arc-client mandatory, it likely would drive me off the game.
2. Your site needs some serious restructuring and optimization to catch up to where the old one was.
Well I am off, I will just rely on wikis and podcasts for the news for now (and probably from now on). I already have the arcsoft pages on my untrusted sites list, along with a bunch of others and will add perfectworld now for good measure. That will probably break the functionality but then again I do not have to use it toplay the game ...
i can see PWE doing it to steam like ubisoft does with their games
Yes, I can confirm, I bought, downloaded and installed Anno 2070 through Steam. When I launch the game, it opens the Ubisoft game launcher where I then have to tell it I want to play Anno 2070.
I also found, downloaded and installed Warframe through Steam (good co-op 3rd person fighting MMO game, F2P, way more grindy than STO however). When I click it in my Steam library it opens the Warframe launcher.
So, I figure, at some point in the near future, trying to open STO from Steam, will only open ARC so then you can open STO, like the above mentioned games.

Defending The Galaxy By Breaking One Starfleet Regulation After The Next.
I got it during their $9.99 sale. Kinda the same process as Arc's stuff. Installed Steam, bought the ship, uninstalled Steam. No biggie.
If the current launcher for STO goes away, I'll go back to Steam before loading Arc.

p.s. at least the gamepedia is intact ...
That is because gamepedia has nothing to do with Cryptic or PWE. If it had that too would enjoy the Arc-like styling of the arcgames.com.
I keep the forums bookmarked so I don't have to go through the main site.
no no no this cant be true PW would never do that.........
