You get the marks for defending the whole contested area, all towers, not just one. Interestingly, on Tribble it went fairly nice, but when I was around (Euro evening right after server restart) the place didn't have enough ships in one zone to effectively defend all towers. When people will come, and I'm sure they will, you can basically just fly around the contested space and get marks every 10-15 minutes.
Also, I played the breach, and the Normal version rewarded 56 Dyson Marks. That's enough for a few hours of fast projects. If you want to take your time and do the 20 hour ones, there's a project in upgrades, that turns 350 Dyson marks into 5 commendations, setting you up for days of 2500 xp projects.
It bodes ill if there weren't enough people in the contested zone on launch day for people to actually get the marks. I flew around there for a good three hours for a total of 8 marks.
Could also be a glitch with the game itself, however, as there were definitely a few times where we managed to hold all the towers for a little while.
Aside from the contested zone seemingly not working the way its supposed to, which is disappointing in and of itself, one of my biggest complaints is the ridiculously lame excuses for episodes that got included for Season 8. It's pretty sad that these were even called episodes, as they're just cinematics. After Sphere of Influence (which was fanstastic) I was really hoping for more high-caliber episodic content.

Well I'm an Euro player, you know that after a server maintenance it's around 9-10 pm for me when things pick up. I think there will be more players. And they need to learn how to do the place. I saw 15 ships at the active point, nobody at the ones already controlled. And then ofc the Voth spawn in and retake the point.
My only problem is a quirky bug so far, but we found the solution. When you do the random missions (what's eating our mines, minefield, supply depot) you actually have to switch your journal to another mission as primary, and THEN you get the waypoints for the dyson missions XD No idea what's up with that, but that fix worked for us.
And as much of a lack of episodes they are, for a while I'll give them a free pass, because OMG A DINOSAUR IS EATING MY FACE. Now I just wish they'd add the skitterer facehugger screams whenevery one of them pounces you, and hillarity ensues xD
It doesn't match the "people can't play at all" issue because the game was not utterly packed when I played it. It looked like just another regular day in STO, outside the Dyson sphere as well as inside it. I'd say people couldn't connect due to some server side problem that has nothing to do with server load.
Yeah, the dyson sphere was not like over packed at all like i expected it to be. I have to give Season 8 a 6/10. I will admit that this season was not as good as I thought it would be. The new seasons are really the only thing besides hanging out with my fleet that keeps me playing this game. I mean the territory stuff is cool but I thought it would be better. I have a feeling I will not be logging on much anymore until season 9, if that turns out to be any good.
I agree completely, being someone who isnt a teen or adolescent anymore, that you must appreciate things a little more.
I still have some of my old star trek and star wars ships. (and play with them making proper whooshing noises and all) but you need to appreciate the little things. This new content is just that new, it has some kinks (and some klinks) that need to be worked out. But its pretty nice.
I am not a teen or an adolescent either, but this season is more hard grind with repetitive and easy missions.
This is the first season that I could log in and stay on all the time.. and unless they did a really big improvements on the servers, that is a bad signal
So one guy labels S8 a failure, then double posts. Next the naysaying herd runs immediately to follow mindlessly along behind this Judas Goat bleating piteously in agreement?
What complete and utter nonsense!
To you, OP. I'll make up my own mind about whether or not S8 is a failure. Based upon my own experiences. Not those of someone else whose alleged playing time in the Sphere I have no way of verifying or confirming. After all this is the InterWebs. And we all know what the InterWebs are full of. Besides mammary glands and kittens.
To all of you who piled on with him in blatant conformity to the perceived status quo because you're terrified of being different from the rest of the thundering herd beasts - shut up. Stop posting.
Quit trying to ruin it for the rest of us who haven't yet played any of it.
Just like you, I am expressing my opinion on the InterWebs. If you do not like it, fine. I'll lose five or six seconds of sleep over that someday. If you'd like to prevent me from expressing my opinion, then I'll be happy to comply.

It's far to early to claim it a failure or not, but from my own observations I logged in and was told to imeediatly report to the Dyson's sphere where we'd set up abase of operations to fight the Voth over Omega particles. This was a big 'whaaaaat?' moment for me. I'd played sphre of influence and understood there was a detection of omega particles, but really felt like there had been a huge leap in the storyline leaving me confused to what exactly had just happened. I really don't think the feature episode set the season up properly storyline wise. I'd of actually expected a couple of missions at the start of the season having us find the Dysons sphere, set up a base of operations and find out about the Voth and thier intentions with the Omega particles.
Right now, it seems we've made no attempts to contact the Voth, or even find out thier intentions for the Omega particles. For all we know, the Voth mastered the usage of Omega particles misslions of years ago. It would be like a Federation ship detecting a blackhole near a Romulan ship and going nuts about it, without thinking that the Romulans use them as power sources.
From a playabilty point of view, I completed the new missions and events in a couple of hours, this was faaar to quick. I was reading most of the dialogues, but I admit I skipped a few, mainly as they were popping up when I was in the vicintiy of hostile mobs as I was taking the missions. The Voth ships seemed farto easy to destroy, although I admit my Defiant is pretty well equipped, but still, it felt far to easy to just blow up these ships of a race that is 65 million years more superior. The ships looked nice, but I actually feeling the lighting in the Dyson sphere makes them look cartoonly :-/
Ground wise, the maps for the contested batlezone is quite confusing, I found myself running into invisable walls several times and the combat didn't really engage me that much. I find the deferi ground zone more fun to play. The mechs are kinda cool with thier repulsion field effect, but it wasa tad annoying to be pinned against awall unable to move. The dinosaurs just looks completely out of place and even though it was cool to kill a T-rex with lasers on it's head, it just didn't feel Trek to me.
Overall, I feel like the flow of the missions and combat in Season 8 doesn't really work. It just feels like a handful of new events (consisting grinding easy mobs) to grind yet another reputation and another fleet holding.
I really want the devs to fix the loot tables in the game, make certain mobs drop certain types of loot, fix the crafting system so it needs items from different sources, to get players out there exploring for items, instead of having a glorified vender. I want the devs to add exploration to the game, maybe even resource gathering and mining (the current form is not adequate). Right now I'm just getting tired of the basic grind and power creep from C-store ships and reputation items :-/
Gamers complain non-stop. Trekkies hate everything that doesn't reflect their own personal opinions on what 'canon' is that noone really cares about. Asking for less whining is like asking the tide to stop rising.
Ok.. For those of you saying Season 8 sucks, Not alot of people in the Sphere etc., you do realize there's a reason for that. Alot of us can't actually even log on. There was an issue on Tribble preventing people from getting past the "Legacy of Romulus" loading screen. This glitch, bug, whatever was transfered to Holodeck. We've had to sit here all day hearing either how good or bad Season 8 is (Many of us LTS).... But at least you are able to log in!
Personally I'd love to be able to praise or complain about how it is, but.. gee.. sorry can't as the Dev's decided that the "Not able to log on thing" wasn't important enough to look into before putting Season 8 onto Holodeck.

Ground Combat works, its the Space Zone that is an utter disaster. It's nothing but runabout missions and that gets old FAST.
The S8 Events, they really need to tweek them bad. For the Voth to be "Defensive" they sure are really good at offense. It's impossible to fly an Escort and kills the fun.
But the worst of them all is the blasted Fleet Holding and the Reputation.............more bleeping grinding, I for one am absolutely sick beyond sick of GRINDING! It's so bad that I just don't want to play STO anymore, because I'm tired of logging in to "work" on Reputation or "work" on Fleet Holdings.
Especially when I'm in a small fleet who does 1000x more work than Large Fleets and burning out private reserves. And still barely in Tier 2 on the other 2 holdings. They lied about helping small fleets and that really has put me off playing the game anymore. Especially when the Klingon side, the Queues are deader than dead. So my Klingons will never see nice Fleet gear. Which makes me glad I quit PvP ages ago, because it's all Fleet stuff now.
Perhaps I should take a vacation from this game, until they add fun back into it.

When you have a development studio like Cryptic that puts hard release dates on seasons when the build is in the middle of testing, you understand that Tribble isn't about testing, it's about previewing.
Testing implies conditions for failure.
When you have a build on Tribble and you're going to push a build to holodeck regardless of what is found during testing, you don't really care about Quality Assurance. Because holodeck is an etch-a-sketch and no matter how the quality of life is impaired, it can be fixed eventually.
This is why I no longer test.
If a hard date is published for a Season release in 4 weeks, and a day later a deeply screwed up bug that irritates and frustrates hundreds of players, or quite frankly breaks the game for many more is found -- but will take 3-4 months to fix due to its complexity... guess what?
You already posted a hard release date. Whatever is found, no matter how long it takes to fix... no matter how screwed up the bug is... it can be fixed on holodeck later.
The Tribble "Test" server became a joke when they stopped giving ambiguous launch dates and started giving hard dates.
Second, I'm notseeing anything really new here.. zdifferent ships, diferent name on the bad guy, but over all its the very same old grind, only now theres more of it..
The new bridge looks awesome, the baby t-rex is cute ( why T-rex? Voth descended from hadrisaur's ).
Theres so little storyline going into it that it feels like it was an afterthought, and a bad one at that.
for the entire experience your just blowing the hell out of stuff.. There's no talking.. No nothing, just pew pew pew.. It gets boring real fast..
and finally, Voth and a dyson sphere?? A Dyson sphere is where Picard and crew found Scotty in a pattern buffer of the spheres transporter network, in the episode named "Relics". And THAT sphere was large enough to hold 288 million earth sized planets.. Not just 3 or 4 zones.. The whole thing is just too contrived..
I wouldnt say S8 is a failure, but i was kinda hoping for a full featured episode season, as for the sphere, its just a grind zone, which im sure this rep will tak me months simply because i get extremley bored doing the same thing 50 times to get commendations to put into the rep projects cos cryptic wants to time gate it (you suceeded, only finished my second rep to tier 5 a few weeks ago, and bearing in mind ive been here since beta and im an LTS should tell you how much i like your rep system )
Only nagging irritation i have is the sheer amount of BFAW spam from npc's, First it was the Tholians, now its the bloody Voth, my fighters on my vesta die the instant ive launched them, and my hyperplasma torpedo is pointless. srsly, tone down the BFAW spam, i take it cryptic has the voth running A2B builds on them lol.

I bet you have a problem with New Romulus consisting of only the Adventure zone instead of Tumerboy creating an entire planet by hand. Or Earth consisting entirely of Starfleet Academy instead of Tumerboy replicating the entire planet Earth of 2409 on a 1:1 scale by hand.
But you are right about one thing. It isn't a dyson sphere. It's a dyson shell.
So one guy labels S8 a failure, then double posts. Next the naysaying herd runs immediately to follow mindlessly along behind this Judas Goat bleating piteously in agreement?
You speak the truth. It is in trend to blindly hate everything Cryptic does nowadays. We asked for content, and we got content. Yet the whine continues. This is one of the most entitled and unappreciative communities I have ever seen.

See, that is what I don't get. The Sphere, Shell.. whatever the new adventure zone looks awesome. Both space and ground. Nice locale, And easy on the eyes. I especially like how the air gets more polluted as you close up on the industrial buildings, or how the area behind the mine field is a zero visibility badlands. And small thing, don't know whether it's just the obelisk and the Voth ships, but there's duress and hull deformation as you get closer to dying. I haven't noticed that before. And ground has tons of little details as well. Voth actually jump into the exosuits before they power up, the stairs and consoles coming to life in Allied Command as you get close. I really like the aesthetics of the place.

If you don't think Cryptic is evil incarnate and that they can't sleep at night without knowing they've hurt the internet feelings of all of their customers, and that their board meetings are started with a ritual of sacrificing a random STO player and drinking their blood from a chalice, then you are a Cryptic fanboy.

If that is the alternative, then I'll willingly jump around in a PWE branded skirt holding Pompoms with DStahl's face on them.
What happened to the diplomatic option? Have any peace delegations tried to open up talks with the Voth and say "please stop harvesting the particle that could ruin everything"? But no. The Federation is all about "Shoot first, don't even bother asking questions". Because the guys making the decisions at Cryptic know that "kill everything" is what sells, except that Trek is about the opposite of "kill everything".
How arrogant is the Federation to go to the other side of the galaxy to impose its will on another sovereign power while having such limited knowledge of what we're dealing with? Maybe the Voth have millions of years of experience with harvesting and using Omega particles? They can build ships the size of small moons. They take centuries to perfect technology before using it. They don't take crazy risks. So maybe they know what the hell they're doing.
Maybe we should ask them! They might be harvesting Omega to fight the Iconians. Maybe if Cryptic thought of creating gameplay other than "fly around and shoot the big dumb object and get a reward", this would feel like Star Trek and not "Generic space action MMO: now with space T-Rexes!".
This is hitting the nail on the head if I ever saw one!

It isnt even a dyson shell.. Freeman Dyson was a very real person, and the Dyson Sphere was and is a very real concept.. check it out.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dyson_sphere
So I want them to have done the construction of it on a 1:1 scale, maybe put a star in the middle of it?? No, the shouldnt have done it at all.. As for the romulans The planet is the least thing to have problems with.. Instead of trying to insult me and the others, why dont you do some homework and check out what people are saying for yourself..

My reply to the subject emacs is referring to, from another, dead thread:
If you took more time to read the dialogue windows rather than resting your huge ego on the F button, you'd notice that it is the Romulan Republic who have opened and are leading this entire operation with Federation and Empire assistance, since all three factions recognise the threat that Omega particles present to the entire galaxy, and all warp-capable civilizations.
Or you could come onto the forum and throw this pathetic temper tantrum.

I don't mind seeing Cryptic tortured a little bit, just like everyone else. But expecting their environmental artists to create an entire Dyson Shell on a 1:1 scale like we see here isn't just sadistic, I think the Hague classifies that as a crime against humanity.
They put a lot of effort into those 4 zones. Have you seen the level of detail they put in? And you want it on an unreasonably larger scale than that?
I do check out what people are saying, and I agree with some things -- and I disagree with others. But to expect them to do the entire Dyson Sphere on a 1:1 scale is ludicrous. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy.

Ohhh, So now its alll on the romulans is it?? Funny how throughout the entirety of loR the federation via Cryptics writing takes no small amount of satisfaction in making sure we never forget we're federation or klingon and NOT romulans at all..

Sorry, I'm with emacs. Somebody should have at least tried to figure out why the Voth are trying to gather Omega particles and opened negotiations instead of shooting first and not bothering to ask questions.
The Klinks I can understand, they do that anyway. The Republic are supposed to be more reasonable, and the Feds? Diplomacy first, phasers later is supposed to be their gorram job. But then, they're totally OOC for a lot of the storyline anyway (so far the only place in the whole story where I've felt even remotely like a Starfleet captain is the Undine storyline, where my job is actually to open negotiations with the Undine), this is just where it comes to a head. Played "The Breach" yesterday and I felt more like Wedge Antilles than Jean-Luc Picard.
It seems Cryptic blew the whole budget on art and didn't have time or money to think up a halfway decent story to go with it. WHAT THE **** HAPPENED, CRAPTIC?
P.S. Normally here I'd say "There's always the Foundry," but the editor's turned off and most of the missions were missing the last time I looked.

Hey, look at it this way: For years, Klingon players have had to suffer through Fed-centric recycled content written from a Feddie viewpoint with Feddie attitudes. Now it's YOUR turn: See the Galaxy, meet new and interesting lifeforms from distant and exotic worlds, and then kill them.

Think of what they could have done with that..

That'll be in Season 9: Sharknado. (thank you whoever's forum signature was that)
This is hitting the nail on the head if I ever saw one!
It isnt even a dyson shell.. Freeman Dyson was a very real person, and the Dyson Sphere was and is a very real concept.. check it out..

Funny how throughout the entirety of loR the federation via Cryptics writing takes no small amount of satisfaction in making sure we never forget we're federation or klingon and NOT romulans at all..
cut the two faced babble.. The guy had a point..
Season 8: Grinding WITH FREAKING DINOSAURS!
P.S. Normally here I'd say "There's always the Foundry," but the editor's turned off and most of the missions were missing the last time I looked.
