I used to know a guy who worked for an ambulance charity and also his own private business. He would take all his out of date equipment and swap it with the charities equipment that was in date so that he could keep his stuff up to date and the charity would pay for it.
He still does it, and the charity picks up the tab.
It's really not so much a matter of belief as a matter of fact. By continuing to patronize his store, you were helping him stay in business and helping him cheat other customers. You're clear in the legal sense, but ethically? You're in no position to be throwing stones.
A bug is a bug. When something is unintentionally beneficial to a particular group it gets fixed. And there were players spamming out hundreds of those Doffs. We're not talking about a little bug here.
And if Cryptic didn't care about the gamers they wouldn't even give you little games and events where you can earn EC or Dilithium just for participating. They wouldn't give people the chance to make around 2,000 free Zen a month just by playing. They don't have to give you access to any of that.
Very true but its not about if they care or not the burden falls on Cryptic to keep current players happy so they keep spending money and to entice new players to join the game. Cryptic has to have a balance of Give and Take for their side and the players side.
Lets say that Cryptic decided to remove all the little side missions would you still feel the same way about the game or lets say they decided to increase the cool downs of all the missions by 25% and decreased the reward by 25% would that be the breaking point for you.
(PWE) like all companies are just interested in the bottom line (The COLD Hard CASH)
And it is up to Cryptic to make sure that the bottom line gets bigger by coming up with different ways of enjoin the game like side missions so it has nothing to do about caring but it has everything to do about keeping and getting new players for their cash.
One way of making players happy is fixing the bugs that are in the game
Ethics is a lovely word but its just that, a word were its meaning is subject to interpretation, not a absolute value.
Also I find people that go around with ethics have very strange ethnically values, point is there was nothing he could do
We can argue about whether protesting would be appropriate. But it certainly wouldn't have required much effort for him to stop patronizing that store. The fact that he continued to do so is what makes his whole story rather pathetic.

Also I find people that go around with ethics have very strange ethnically values, point is there was nothing he could do unless you think he should go witha megaphone and go around saying "DONT BUY FROM HERE! DONT BUY FROM HERE!" and dont get me started on random packs, the exact thing that Cryptic does with Lock Boxes is something that been done in other collectables, RNG is not exactly new or Korean and if you are in certain circles (like card games) you know what comes with the territory.
Heh, I used to play Yugioh at several places in the DC area. It didn't take long to figure out which shops were dishonest and not worth buying from. But this didn't mean that I never went to them, just that I didn't buy much from them.
One of them had a particularly draconian security policy and played it off as if it was business as usual.... yeah business as usual at Toys R Us... but no where else, and Toys R Us was nicer about it. My only reason to buy things from them was that (probably due to low sales volume) they often had things in stock that other places had already sold out of. That was it.
Anyways though, it sounds to me like his thing was that this store was a convenient place to get together with friends. They probably didn't buy much from the store, just enough that the owner had a reason not to kick them out.
As to why I believe that Doff hoarding caused the E-mail to crash, the E-mail feature was working fine as storage and wasn't being overstressed until after the devs added fleet projects that required tons of Doffs. To me that looks like cause and effect.
Who knows how long the Email feature could have lasted if the devs provided proper Doff storage.
Um truthfully? Based on what I've seen, any "proper" doff storage would be "too small" and get augmented by stuffing doffs in the mail. I can't visualize an account doff bank being larger than 100 by default, and a lot of peeps would whine about having to pay zen to make it bigger.
An account Doff no, but they should have seen the need for a dedicated Fleet Doff storage
bank and the size could be a lot larger than an account and had unlockable expansions.
I can't visualize that holding more than 1500-2000 doffs. Some people were actually making alt ACCOUNTS simply because they'd filled up their mailboxes. (BEFORE the mail "nerf")

I said 3 blues, I meant 5. 5 rare officers for 1 purp = FREE?
Can I haz your math skills?
*edit* remove the rare requirements for purple trade ins and make them 5k or remove the 5k cost. Or remove the function from the game entirely. Or be greedy.

well i can only agree with the OP that stuff doesn't get fixed unless it is an exploit.
i don't mind them fixing stuff, but their "priorities" are really messed up.
how about fixing that clicking sound in my speakers that annoys the hell out of me since LoR launched?
nah... lets work on the next season/code branch and put the Janitor in charge of the actual Live server.
in the meantime i stopped playing STO because this build is imho the worst state the game has ever been in (from a pure playability perspective).
i'm waiting for them to either fix the majority of bugs that make me not want to play anymore or to add something entertaining again (entertaining... not another boring easy mode grind map)

I don't know why you continued to support him. To me, that just makes you an accessory.

I'm sure you are. Very few people recognize for themselves that they're acting unethically.

It went off the deep end when it started...
I lost you right here mate.

Really? So making DOFFs cost 5k dil when trading in 3 blues isn't directly greed?

Except you can choose what you get. And the options are limited.
Just remove the function from the game. Might as well. Who uses it anymore?
The point was monetization. It's plainly evident, and pathetic.
Yeah, kinda takes your breath away doesn't it ?
So what if it's monetization? This is a business, not a charity....

Just look at their quarterly's from the most recent to 2+ years back.
The picture is clear.
Is business. Cryptic runs a good one.
They're doing better. Your point?
It's filthy stinking greed. And what quarterly's are you examining??
I really am wondering what grade you are in .....
