Thanks for the suggestion on how to fix this. Had it happen with STO and Neverwinter at the same time for some reason ... never would have thought of this
"I am .. the storm that rains devastaton on our foes."
I can't start today. Although I'm using WINE, it's hard to believe it's a coincidence. At any rate, the workaround won't work for me. I have no Windows task manager.

Nevermind. I found the Windows task manager. I seem to be running again.
I dont know if its something to do with the new patch thats coming out today.
But when i tried to start up the game today its wasn't starting up properly. The game and patcher were both working fine last thing yesterday, but when i tried first thing this morning it would not start properly.
have done a disk clean up, checked for viruses and like, even un-installed and downloaded and reinstalled the game but nothing has any effect.
I have windows vista and will explain all the procedures/problems as best I can.
1: when I click on the game it dos not show the user account thing that it usually shows i.e allow cancel bit (might just show for Vista as didn't for old xp).
2: it doesn't show the launcher updater bit and am sure it usually shows this even if no updates (could be wrong)
3: the game login window doesn't show properly, it shows the game at the bottom of screen i.e as bar at the bottom, but the login window does not pop up, when I mouse-over i.e preview it the login screen shows as normal i.e with the login and info/news bits inc about the update/server down bar bit but does not pop-up so I cant actually login.
If I select minimise by right clicking then click restore it shows it as a black screen with just 1 row for inputting and a button probably an enter button to small to tell on preview.
I will try again once the new patch is added, but if anyone knows what has happened and if possible has any solution would be grateful for any help/advice just in case the patch doesnt fix it.
oh on another point reg new fed toons, I created a fed toon with the extra char slot and got it to lvl 5 then 8 and the bit for the boffs that you get get for those ranks no longer shows in the in-progress mission bit have they moved them or is it a bug ?
I am having an error ever since last night where the STO launcher will load in the task bar but it does not actually show on my desktop and I cannot bring it up to make it visible to log in. How do I fix this?
I too am having this same issue. still have not found a way to make it appear. i only use the small preview window on the start bar to get my information in to log in, but this is extremely annoying. i also tried running a file check through the launcher, did not resolve it.
This is my first post in the forum (that I can remember) so I hope it is helpful.
Before I go further, thanks to rossgr for giving me a jumping off point to search for the solution.
I believe this problem is similar to many on this thread, using steam or the regular game shortcut to open the launcher results in having the taskbar icon for STO displaying an open login screen for the launcher. The problem is the launcher isn't being displayed on the desktop so we can all login.
In my case it is a migrated window. The launcher window was offscreen in the upper left corner.
STEPS TO FIX (migrated window for windows 7)
1. With the STO running and displaying the icon in the taskbar tray.
2. While holding down shift, right click the icon ( I used the left shift button for SHIFT+RightClick).
3. Select Move from the listed options.
4. Use keyboard arrow keys to move the window back on screen (In my case, pressed DownArrow key about 5-10 times then pressed RightArrow Key about 30 times to get the window back on screen).
RESULTS
The launcher window will now be on the desktop ready for interaction.
ADDITIONAL INFO
- I have closed and reloaded the launcher from steam and it now loads to the main screen on desktop.
I got my problem fixed. Somehow the launcher window was off the screen desktop. I had to right click on the taskbar icon and select move..and then use the arrow keys to move it back tot he screen. Do not know how or why this happened. but I can play now.
Thank you.. I had the same problem and i was desperate.. Really thank you
I am unable to get to the launcher screen at all. Whenever I click on the icon it just brings up the updater and says it's trying to connect to the launcher, and each time it times out. It can't be a connection issue on my end, otherwise I wouldn't be able to connect to the internet (Which clearly isn't the case lol)
Seriously call Kenny Loggins because you're in the Danger Zone.
if anyone else is having same problem.
STO launcher didnt show up on my screen.
After starting, icon in taskbar was there but there was no window where u can input username and password to start playing.
1. Start STO
2. start Task manager
3. Applications tab
4. Right click on Star trek online and press Minimize
5. Right click again and press Maximize
(Now launcher is there but Maximized over everything)
6. Escape to close launcher
7. Start STO and there is your launcher again, visible and in normal size.
When I went to log in to STO this evening, the only thing that happened was that the task menu icon showed up and a minimized window of the STO launcher. The problem is that it won't maximize. Right-clicking gives me no workable options and the icon in the task bar gives me no response.
Tried redownloading the launcher, but to no avail. Tried resetting the computer, also to no avail. I haven't seen anything else about it in the forums yet, so I figured I'd post and see what advice I could get.
Just tried to start the game and the launcher is not getting to the login screen. The STO tab is there on the taskbar but it is getting no further. Have tried opening sto both with steam and without and same problem both ways.
Never had this issue before and Ive not made any system changes/updates since I last logged in.
oh wow I thought I had done something the royally TRIBBLE up the launcher, I had to recently update the .NET framework (unrelated to STO) & that is when I started to get this launch window problem, I even did a complete reinstall of the game with no luck.....do you know how long it takes to reinstall 10 GIG??????????
There are other issues that occurred at the same time, some LOOT will not pick up when the action tab is pressed, no matter how many times it's pressed, I'm afraid of losing the box containing Nakura, Rom & Fleet Marks, AUTO LOOTING no longer works, if you enable it through the log on screen Options Menu > Basic Tab it just disables it as soon as you close that tab, can no longer alter ANY Advanced Video Settings
Unfortunately none of the above mentioned fixes worked on my computer. I'm running STO on Linux with wine. But after a frustrating week of twiddling with arrow keys I found something that worked at least on my system:
I opened the registry (by typing wine regedit in a terminal)
went to the key
I opened it. Is quite long. In the wine registry there are lots of squares in it (witch are missing in the Windows 7 registry). I deleted all of them. Than closed everything, started the launcher - and there it was again in the upper left corner of my wine desktop.
The funny thing about this is, that now the squares are there again but I can start the launcher with no problem.
So... a few hours ago, no problem. Now... restart 'puter, double click launcher... it opens into the tray, it shows a preview of the launcher box on mouse-over, but it won't blow up into the activated window on click. Anyone else having this issue?
Ok, so with some expermentation I have learned that, while it will not open the window, the launcher is indeed running... I click on it, enter my password, hit enter a couple times (all while watching the teeny tiny preview on mouse-over....) and shazam, the game launches. Still cannot get the window to open up, though...
This does not happen with other windows applications. IE, Office, and oher games appear to functon normally.
here is more or less permanent workaround if you didnt alrdy fix this issue, or if somebody didnt alrdy tell about this.
1. right click your shortcut
2. find option where you can choose if you wish to open the game minimized, maximized or on normal size
3. set to maximized
4. success, now you are able to play but your launcher will look "funny"

That worked thanks
If it is not on the screen in the first place how can I move it onto the screen?
I got it. I right clicked on the task bar icon and then right clicked on it to choose move. Then just push the up arrow until it showed up. Thank you!
Ohhh. That makes sense. I moved my laptop from the left side of my big screen to the right, and updated the logical arrangement to match.
If I run the executable directly, it fails to connect to the account server. Is there any way to fix this?

those I think are the main ones.
I opened the registry (by typing wine regedit in a terminal)
went to the key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Cryptic/Cryptic Launcher
There is a string called: WindowPos
I opened it. Is quite long. In the wine registry there are lots of squares in it (witch are missing in the Windows 7 registry). I deleted all of them. Than closed everything, started the launcher - and there it was again in the upper left corner of my wine desktop.
