    This is beyond awesome!

I can't believe what I am seeing. You guys have outdone yourselves with this, and I am so pleased it was kept hush hush because it's made the reveal totally amazing and a real shock.

Thank you for the work you have/are putting into this.

I can't wait to begin playing as a Romulan!

I just hope the romulans will have missions like starbase 24 and Gorn minfield and klingon scout force.

That is a great way to level up, since you get one or two purple items.
Let us wear Swimsuits on Foundry maps or bridges please! I would pay zen for that.

I hope we have the option of joining the Tal'Shiar, Sela, or D'Tan. That would be swell. But the description makes it seem like we will be shoehorned in to playing as a Romulan bent on taking down Sela's government. Why? Why not choose sides?

I hope there's some sort of 3 way PvP.

Speaking of PvP, I hope that Romulans get access to those Thalaron mines that basically one-shot everyone in their vicinity.

I hope we all get free respecs to retrait.

I hope Klingons get more specific stuff, not copy-pasted Fed stuff.

I hope the Hirogen come into play somehow with the Romulans.

I hope that the Scimitar becomes playable (and along with it the Typhoon and Jupiter class ships).

I hope every Romulan ship also has 3 sets of customization.

I hope they get 1000 day vet ships, and a full range of uniforms, from TOS to TNG and beyond - every screen so far makes them look like civilians.

No, since they explicitly stated several times that the countdown was just for a release.

Okay guys, I just want to get something straight....

I waited an entire month, watching the countdown with the excitement of a TRIBBLE fan-girl, and this morning I wake up at 5:40 just to countdown to 6 o'clock and what do I find? DISAPPOINTMENT.

I find out that I have to wait till May 21 to play as the Romulans. I watched a countdown, for a countdown! This is not Inception my friends, this is Star Trek. I expected them to be a little less mysterious about their ways, but noooooo, they have to make you think something big is coming and then, KING'S EX! We just wanted to tell you what is gonna happen in another 2 months!

Bravo Cryptic. Bra. vo. The name of your company says it all.

    Anyone else feel let down?

Considering the site always said May 2013, we all expected it to be a trailer. I'm sorry your were let down, but you should have had your expectations a little lower. As to the news, this is all great. STO has needed a large expansion for a while now, and this is the first redesign that PW has had their whole team in.

I might be just sleeping till May. Can't sleep till the 21st of May since my birthday is on May 15th Thanks for the late birthday present Cryptic! XD

I figured the Romulans were coming quite sometime ago. Just always been good at guessing these things :P but what I didn't expect is to see the KDF would be getting content to officially go back to being a 1-50 faction!

While there are those that are skeptical about this, like it's been stated in this thread and in others we had the KDF at 1-50 before, they bumped it up as they realized there just isn't enough content to justify it and said it would ONLY go back when there is enough.

I guess we are really now seeing what a full team can do! :) Kudos to the entire team I cannot wait to get to hear some interviews and discussions about what else is incoming! As I was telling my friend, after 3 years of only Fed and KDF having an entire new faction to play will be exciting!

And now I'll go back to drinking more coffee weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee :D

I am very excited about this update, that being said. It's shame for the kinks. Brand new rom faction, but the klinks don't seem to be getting updated much.

I hope the new system brings some balance to the game.

I would've sworn when i made my klingon it started at level one , but there really wasnt enough klingon content other than the war zones to level up . so basically cryptic is going back to how the klingons were before .if they really added nothing more than the ability to start at level 1 again ill be disappointed.

the one thing my fleet was dreading was ANOTHER SB to grind out . it bad enough to grind out 2 bases . three is just nuts .

though from a starting player stand point i can see a appeal to choose one of the 3 major faction in the startrek IP . (which we know is the true focus in this )

but how will it really translate . cuz if the content is just replace "federation" with "romulan" than alot of the stories wont fit it with the true style of that faction like a good portion of the klingon content is now . (tagging EPOCHs for klingons ? They should HUNT AND EAT THEM)

im sure the UI and the ship and model ART is FANTASTIC. like always . but the meat and potatoes of MMOs is the Missions, quests , story arcs. that they mesh with the faction your playing .

but i wait and see for my final judgement .

Not really. It was never a secret that May is when the new content launches, and it was obvious that the countdown was to a 'reveal' for what is forthcoming.

Cryptic are not doing anything that your average movie-production team doesn't do. Teasers, trailer(s) and then the 'content'. It's all about the build up and it is, frankly, an excellent marketing strategy.

It was obvious? Excuse me? Listen, I'm trying not to be an TRIBBLE$ but it was never obvious. There was still speculation yesterday among many players that it wasn't a new playable faction coming up, but instead a Romulan invasion to be dealt with from the side of of the Federation. Sure, it said "May, 2013" but it was never clarified as to what was coming to the end of the countdown, or May 2013.

And no, Cryptic is not doing what movie producers are doing. A movie has a trailer, then releases the Movie. Cryptic had a cryptic countdown leading you to believe there was an update coming at the end, and never clarified what it was. Then, when the clock hit zero, they released not the content, but the announcement, or the "trailer" for the content.

The countdown was an announcement for an announcement. Sad.

So an extra faction with which to mindlessly grind the stupid Rep system with... whoopity doo...
    A world to defend
    A city to protect
    innocents to save
"Why?" They ask "they hate you"

Sad to you, maybe, but I am still excited for the May 2013 update. Also, what Reyan said was true, it was clearly obvious that it was what it was. Never in the countdown did it say that players will be able to play as a Romulan on March 21, 2013. Maybe your expectations were way too high, but that's not Cryptic's fault, that's your own fault.

There is a countdown to the first trailer for the second hobbit movie.

Which I've seen movies do several times. It's a bit difficult finding you an example, since so many movies have "countdown" in their title, but I've seen it more than once.

STO has done it more than once, too, on a smaller scale; however, this update is the largest one ever, so the hype is going to be correspondingly larger.

One thing I never envy development team for... trying to please a bunch of trekkies. ;)

I did the beta for this, knew it was half baked and really didn't play it. Recently a little birdie told me what was coming so I re-subbed and was surprised to find a lot of new "stuff" in the game.

All I see in this expansion is a lot of additional greatness for the long neglected Klingons. In addition to another entire faction, line of ships, lore, story and end-game. So why anyone is complaining is beyond me. All your getting is a ton of new content, additions and fun for the low price of, FREE.

Glad the devs are releasing something this cool and looking forward to everything it entails.

A lot of folks are counting down to Pax East as well, or Blizzcon, ComicCon etc. Most all of those announcements are also about something new that is coming to us in the future. Why someone expects a countdown to be a full fledged patch with everything ready to go is comical.

Ahh sweet delicious hatred and Butthurt. Let the tears flow! :D

A serious comment though. Its been obvious for a while that Dual cannons and Beams need a serious rebalancing. If they didn't how come people are advertising for escort only STFs and what not. Its not like Cruisers can fire all their beams in any greater arc than Dual cannons (50 degrees rather than 45. Woohoo) And they do slightly over half the damage when they do it even before the power drain. That needs to be looked at and I hope the devs do take a serious look at the basic weapon balance in the game.

It took them over a year to build the romulan faction from scratch, including working with Denise Crosby. We can only hope that the time spent working on this was worth it. I, for one, am extremely optimistic.

I'm not saying I'm not excited, I'm just saying that it was very confusing, the whole countdown and such. I was never able to find any information on what the countdown was for, so I guessed, like a lot of people did.

My expectations were high, but is that really my fault? I'm frustrated that I was not given enough information to know where to set my expectations, I hate mysteries that are unsolvable due to lack of clues.
Now that we know for sure what is coming and when, I will try to forget about this upsetting ordeal. At least I have some really cool concept art of Romulan Warbirds to look at now.

Their political structure is essentially Roman late Republic, Early Empire with a secret police grafted on.

Pre-Romulus going kaboom, yes. New Romulus? Not so much (from what little I've been able to glean). It's entirely plausible in my mind that Sela is going to reappear as an antagonist figure, not the Republic's figurehead.

Uhm.. Hate to break it to you but they're putting it /back/ to 1.. It was starting at 1 at launch then they moved it to 20. And it used to be a lot worse than it is now. I'm one of the ones that went from 1-50 doing the grind and I have the Orion Marauder from before they moved the free ship token to a 600 day vet reward.

But everyone likes to jump to conclusions. Most always go with the negative and so they /look/ for all the negative. Look to the good in it eh? You'll not get so many ulcers :P

And I'd hate to break it to you, but originally, the KDF Side of the game started originally at level 6 (Took only the tutorial and a few exploration missions to ding 7 and be able to PVP). Then they raised it to 21 because of lack of content, so yes they are lowering the starting level to 1

Doesn't bother my self, because I've already made all the KDF side characters I need. I don't look forward to grinding from level 1 for the Romulans, but I do look forward to having them in game regardless! WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!

We'll see how well this goes, Cryptic...

But I dont see myself starting another faction, when Im going to have to grind up another reputation path on my main character... heck I still havent gotten to tier V on my KDF character.

Also... I think the new hud/gui should be fast tracked and not be a bullet point of this expansion, because your current UI is horrendous.

And seriously, the sooner you get Tribble set up to test this, the better. Like Im talking next week on tribble sort of fast.

It doesn't sound like factional options will be available. The tal'shiar were and will still be enemies, especially if the romulan episode arc is available for the new faction. This is the same for Empress Sela- an unfit despot who might be used as a puppet for the iconians.

No doubt they'd be in one of the later updates for the Legacy of Romulus (after a few

on the subject of racial balance. So we'll just have to see what Cryptic has in mind.

I'm going to wager the reason they look like civilians is because they might of lost a
homeworld and have been low on fancy replicator resources, even Sela isn't posh'ish.

And about those uniforms- the current ones look to be based on the TOS-TNG outfits.
