All I have to say "[SUPERB JOB GUYS" This makes me come back to STO with more force and great pleasure...sorry for those who whined about KDF but we are ready to move on and this is just a start in having more play content as Dan pointed out long a go.
Heh, it just occured to me... I think the reason they can afford to make it free is the success of the lockboxes. Something good finally came out of that
Infinite possibilities have implications that could not be completely understood if you turned this entire universe into a giant supercomputer.
Star Trek Online?s first expansion, Legacy of Romulus, has just been revealed! Visit our overview site at www.legacyofromulus.com for full expansion details.
Are you ready to build your legacy?
05.21.13
It's taken over three years, but you finally delivered the goods! The Romulans have always been my favorite faction and now, at last, I can finally play as one. I love you for this Cryptic/PWE! Many thanks and a thousand blessings upon your house!
It's free! More details about C-Store offerings will be revealed as we get closer to launch
Cheers,
Brandon =/\=
I missed this earlier. I would like to say that I'm very pleased that you guys aren't going down the DLC route like DCUO and TSW did. Even if most DLCs are around $10, it still locks content behind a pay wall and sort of defeats the whole purpose of F2P (in my opinion). I have several friends in game that could not afford a DLC and I'm happy that I will be able to play all the new content with them.
Just finished patching... ...can still only manage to get in to character selection, but there the message server maintenance pops up. -Almost there. I am all giddy about this. Can hardly wait.
BRAVO, Cryptic!
You do realize this is not coming for another 2 months right? 0-o
Personally i'm torn. This game has a good deal of up sides, and alot of down sides. Frankly, with my experience so far (started silver over a month ago, went gold shortly after beginning), all i see is a new way to hawk the in game currency. And to be honest, after throwing a good deal of resources into a modestly sized fleet, i am really dreading having to do that ALL over again. Not to mention (as another player said) having to grind out maco/rom rep again...ugh. Yes, i know some of you have 8 char slots and nothing but free time, not all of us do, or care to repeat that sh*t over again.
IMO, if purchased weapons/items from rep/fleet were allowed to be account bound, instead of character bound, this would lessen the issue. That way when i did get my rom char to 50, i could at least be on a stable footing/near enough in power as my current fed toon setup is.
For everyone hackling people who voice a cautious note over this release, i'll remind you about what other longer time vets have stated over and over again ..about the promises of a Klingon faction being FULLY fleshed out before any other playable race is introduced. Of the many many long existing bugs to powers on both factions being outright broken or bugged in some way.
Am i excited to see a Romulan based storyline (well, as much "story" as this game allows, and for gods sakes, i hope mrs crosby plays a better role than a whiner who follows you this time) and play with new ships, if they are truely new and not just reskins? Sure. Am i really anxious to spend cash/zen on more bank/inventory space/ship slots etc etc and have to do rep grinds again? No, not really.
When the teaser "March under the Raptor's Wings" was first launched, I kind of figured Cryptic might be talking about a new/third Romulan faction, but I just couldn't believe it. I figured it must just have to do with a new FE, and that would be it.
I mean really, a new faction would "have" to include at least 10-20 new story missions (30+ would be better), possibly also revamp/recolor existing FEs/STFs. Add new DOff missions. Repaint existing Reputation and Fleet systems (the latter including newly styled Starbase/Embassy). Add in 5 tiers worth of ships (min 2-3+ ships per tier, so 10-15+ ships, not including Fleet/C-store selections), new characters, costumes, gear, etc. A new ESD/First City. Vet rewards. Etc., etc., etc.
That's quite an undertaking.
I don't know if they managed that all or not. But they're plowing ahead anyway... And they've opened KDF 1-50 (I bet all they've added is a KDF-colored Tutorial, and then re-leveled existing KDF content, and that'll be it for STO's red-headed step children), revamped the UI, new character creation and trait systems, Tholian Rep system. New Villain. And I'd wager a healthy dose of miscellaneous quality of life improvements and old bug fixes (and a slew of new/fresh bugs, of course, heh).
Obviously won't be sure until we actually see some release notes. Still it is amazing to see PW's investment in Cryptic, and all that Lockbox money put to good work.
I'm pretty jazzed. I've always been a Romulan fan. TOS' Balance of Terror, is still probably my all time fav Trek episode, I've a rather large appreciation of ancient Roman culture, ...and green is my favorite color.
I'm looking forward to marching under the wings myself.
You can find/contact me in game as @PatricianVetinari. Playing STO since Feb 2010.
Whoa, Cryptic, I mentioned before that if you manage to pull-off a KDF faction starting from lvl 1 as equals and a Romulan faction in May alltogether you should be declared 'Gaming Gods of the Year'!:)
Seems to me you're really going for that title, aren't you?

My best case scenario for may was; finish the KDF 1-20 and maybe get Romulans 1-20. Wasn't expecting to see full level 1-50 Romulan faction!
Glad to see my expectations not only met but surpassed, and the naysayers/doubters silenced.
They don't stay silent for long though it seems. Pessimists are always ready to p**s on someone's parade. Assuming that KDF 1-20 will be copy'n'pasted Fed missions, KDF won't be complete/finished, etc etc.
Realists have a valid point though, what we got today was an announcement of intent. We have at least two months to wait to see how well Cryptic can deliver and execute on their intent. Recent history and new information about team size etc is on their side though.
What I've seen today is impressive and has me more excited about the game than I have been in a long time. I can't wait til May!
 Wow....just...wow. I am completely impressed by this! KDF, Romulans...there is so much win in this update! I now agree, this is not just another season. Cryptic, well done.

"Popular thread" is an understatement here.
Edit: And another two while I wrote that up...
Re-edit: And, of course, another one while I edited.

VIVA STO!!!:D:D:D

(It's not easy being green.)
In TOS they had a Commander in charge of 3 ships so that makes her the equal of a TOS Commodore. Which is Rear Admiral in TNG.

Is it May yet...
*puts a red Starfleet uniform on 'Termit'*
It's a lot harder being a redshirt. :P

Where is it?
~Tear
Nope.
EQ did it constantly every time they added new races. City of Heroes did it with City of Villains. Im sure there are plenty of other examples.
Seems to me you're really going for that title, aren't you?
I really hope the quality of the KDF levelling content isup to par with what you've done during the last 6 months.
And i'm curious: are Romulans an independent faction?
God, lvl 60 CW. 17k.
You will see changes on 21st of MAY!!!

Well, at this rate, they're going to get it. :P
Uhh, you DID read the website kriss257 just linked to, right?
Full faction from 1-50, just like the Federation is and the KDF will be.

LOL, this really made my day thx.Feel really bad for KDF players but..we'll see.
i managed to make that person u responded to facepalm themselves on the maintanance thread before it closed
