Norway and Yeager dammit... I still want my Typhoon and Jupiter though.
JJ Trek The Kelvin Timeline is just Trek and it's fully canon... get over it. But I still prefer TAR.

I never said T'TRIBBLE wasn't sexist I said that both were... your defence of Phaser Guy by creating a straw man (I.e. that I thought T'TRIBBLE wasn't sexist) is the only deflection going on here.

I think part of the problem in this thread is that we're playing with words that have multiple definitions/levels of application...

There is the "low level sexist" that Trek is well known for. Kirk going shirtless almost every episode, and even getting Spock into the topless thing. The outfits from all the "guest ladies" in TOS to the jump(cat)suits of the TNG era. Riker being hired on to be the "manly" first officer while Stewart comes in as the "brainy" captain. Heck, "Handsome Phaser Guy" "earns" the adjective from being designed as the "male ideal" in a western society...
And, the design of "Phaser Vulcan lady" - the cleavage shirt, the above average filler for said shirt, the custom curves, the "modern street sized" skirt, the heels, all these are on a par with the "low level sexist" things that Trek is known for, and, outside of the "very feminist" people in this thread, not a direct complaint for many of the posters/complainers...

The problem stems, primarily, from the application of the "high level sexist" - aka being "overtly sexist" - in their advertising artwork. "Leaning" her so that the above-average exposed cleavage is highlighted - compounded by the positioning of the "download now" button so that said cleavage line becomes almost an arrow. The combination of "stretched" short skirt, leg positioning, and angle that makes most guys wanna be behind her and looking that way. The "dreamy" look aimed directly at the viewer even though the "action" in the shot would have her (pun intended) logically looking to her left...

As I've said before: stand the lady up, and have her looking at her "target". Those two steps, alone, would pretty much (if not completely) "remove" the "overt sexification" of the artwork, and most likely make the image "acceptable" to the majority of the complainers here(yeah, I admit that we'll never quiet the die-hard feminists). Think about it - the cleavage shirt and short skirt are no worse than what we see in a majority of clubs. Her shape, while indicative of maybe a bad diet, isn't worse than the supermodels we objectify - even on the aforementioned game magazine cover...
Detecting big-time "anti-old-school" bias here. NX? Lobi. TOS/TMP Connie? Super-promotion-box. (aka the two hardest ways to get ships) Excelsior & all 3 TNG "big hero" ships? C-Store. Please Equalize...

To rob a line: [quote: Mariemaia Kushrenada] Forum Posting is much like an endless waltz. The three beats of war, peace and revolution continue on forever. However, opinions will change upon the reading of my post.[/quote]

It would indeed make it acceptable to me (heck, even the photoshopped eyes were a great improvement).

Just make her more concentrated on her skirmish, not looking haplessly at the audience. And hopefully make her gain some balance.

I say they should do more images on the same "line" as the phaser guy, with both male and female, of different species, and rotate them periodically.

I made this real fast. I moved her eyes, zipped up her shirt, and gave her a more greenish tinge. I didn't bother trying to fix that foreshortening with my limited skills and couldn't fix her back either... What do you guys think? We already knew about the eye thing but I think closing her shirt also helps take the emphasis off her TRIBBLE.

Nice. Now while you are at it, why don't you do that shop on the real-sized background-image? (Right-click on main site, view background image) Also, needs fore-head ridges, then we can pass her off as romulan! :D

'Phaser lady' AKA T'Breast is misogynistic and tasteless.

There better off with a battle scene or a ship design rather than that sad attempt. :(

Bring back phaser guy i say. He was friggin cool.:D

I think it's an astronomical improvement. Her pose is still off (nothing you can do about that), but that's pretty much it.

"Critics who say that the optimistic utopia Star Trek depicted is now outmoded forget the cultural context that gave birth to it: Star Trek was not a manifestation of optimism when optimism was easy. Star Trek declared a hope for a future that nobody stuck in the present could believe in. For all our struggles today, we haven’t outgrown the need for stories like Star Trek. We need tales of optimism, of heroes, of courage and goodness now as much as we’ve ever needed them."

Good job they didn't release the Romulan one prematurely then, cause at this rate we'll never get that Green faction.

If I recall correctly, the path to 2409 (RIP) did allow for non-federation species to enlist in Starfleet, so Romulans can certainly sign up, not that I think she's Romulan.
You're right, it did. This was the case in cannon too as numerous Bajoran joined Starfleet before Bajor joined the Federation.

As for the latter, do you mean we've seen two Human-Romulan hybrids in the past, or that we've seen two Human-Romulan hybrids join Starfleet?
    captw wrote: »
she could be part Romulan part Human, it has been done before in the past.
Whilst true, considering there is no option to mix-race in-game, it would seem a little... out of place. It's more likely she's an illogical Vulcan that has decided to grow her hair and unzip her top. Maybe she's going through the Pon Faar and requires more attention?

Maybe if you removed the bit of foot we can just see it may make it look as though she is leaning rather than tripping over.

I don't know if I posted already in this thread..

    but she just looks...dumb.

Not because it's a "she", and not because of the gratuitous cleavage...it's because:

    1) HER LEAN: Is she falling? Diving? Leaning forward? Wha....?!?!?!

    2) If she IS leaning or diving, why is she looking at the camera?

    3) Is she an Elf? A Vulcan? Romulan? Is the obvious pointy ears supposed to appeal to non-SciFi MMORPGers?

It just looks silly. It was seemingly put together by a different art team the the one that did HPG (Handsome Phaser Guy and the Crossfire art is all TRIBBLE from Beta/Season 1/Atari...)

It looks Cheap. It looks silly.

    It looks FAIL.

Repost to save me from typing:

The picture is awful, no two ways about it. It looks like it was drawn by an adolescent male for the cover of his Tolkien fanfic novella.

The background is a mural showcasing things that are relevant, like SHIPS and NEW ROMULUS. Only one of those ships is allotted more space than her TRIBBLE. The homepage is even worse, it's zoomed in on her chest and there's only a nacelle showing.

This is like those browser games that have a random picture of some elf chick in the banner but are pure spreadsheet sim games. The difference is, those are cheap asian carbon copy browser games, so you don't expect them to spend money on advertising or production.

Let me be clear, I don't object to the in-game costumes being showcased, and I don't have a problem with using sex to sell something. I have a problem with the god awful quality of that picture. I'm embarrassed to have that up on my screen for a friend or family member to see. It's done with the same hand as comic books or anime with a target audience of pre-pubescent males who have only a vague idea of the female form.

Maybe next season Cryptic should hire these girls. Here's one with some of the same elements as that disaster on the homepage. If they did this kind of stuff as a hobby, what do you think they could do if Cryptic threw a few dollars at them?

I kind of want to see the aftermath.
Her scratched up knees and the dirt in her cleavage from hitting the ground.
And the guy she accidently shot on the way down because she wasn't looking.

    Gender politics?

    Don't be daft

The poor creature is physically off balance (and biologically unlikely)
this kind of image spreads the lie that Trekies are all teenage NERDS with unrealistic views of women.

And it is going to put people off playing.

its like those twisted facebook adverts for pirate games with a half naked woman captain

if you respect Women its not gender politics its callled "being a decent person"

Everything else excluded, you're disillusional if you truly think that image alone is going to put people off playing this game.

What happens when you're in game and someone is running around with an Orion Woman dressed with as little as possible? Do you message them asking them to cover up (at which point your request will probably be ignored), or do you leave them too it?

Any kid that is old enough to download and play STO is old enough to explain to his mother that it's just a promotional image (one of many).

If someone (male or female) has heard of this game, then they'll likely have done some research before they go about downloading it. They'll read up on it, check some YouTube videos, and will eventually figure out that the game isn't aimed specifically at men.

The only people who would just go to the game website and download straight are hardcore trek fans, and regardless of male or female, they'd download regardless.
