So far as I know, you can't change the names of the runabouts. I'd love to be able to do... in fact I have several names lined up for the day I can, but for now I can't.
There are plans to adjust the scale of the runanabout as well as a few other ships that are in need of an adjustment. This will most likely not patch for about 4-6 weeks.
On a side note, you might have noticed that the updates related to ships are not as frequent as before. This is due to the fact that we have started the next milestone and have been quite busy working on many different tasks for the next release. Although we are not posting as much, we continue to monitor these threads and are still updating and improving ships. However, unlike before where we would patch little fixes here and there, the updates for ships are now spaced further apart.
Thanks.
Can you share what's in the works, ship wise? I remember it being mentioned that the focus was moving to fixing Klingon ships, I do hope that is the case.
We have been working on a lot of technical improvements. Sorry, I can't be specific, but he upcoming changes and additions should help make the ships more dynamic and increase customization options. We had a lot of "it would be cool if" meetings and ended up getting some of them on the schedule.
We have also been working hard on the Klingon fleet with new ships and options coming soon.
More polish for existing Federation and Klingon ships. As I mentioned before, this will most likely release in larger chunks instead of little fixes here and there.
Sorry I can't give you more details but we like to keep some things a suprise.

You mean stuff like exchangeable parts as common on Federation ships? That would be really really appreciated.
Dont know if someone mentioned it before, but if you equip dual beams on galaxy, they do fire from the edges of the saucer instead from the phaser strip on the saucer. It looks very...unrealistic and somewhat stupid....
great news, now that I have obtained an all female orion crew-well we do keep one male slave around. I really need an orion battleship to fly around in making grandeous claims about crushing my opponents. "Empress Mariana" does have a nice ring to it...

Didn't Dstahl or someone post about the STO team looking in to Loot equipment changing the appearance of your ship? That might take advanyage of these "dynamic ... customization options."

I think it would be cool to offer parts piecemeal.
For example, TOS-style makeover kits for ships where you can get, say, just TOS-style nacelles and go through an design them for every Tier 5 ship class, reworked from the TOS Connie assets. TOS-style saucer, etc.
So you could have a Galaxy Refit but with TOS-inspired parts. Or a Galaxy-inspired saucer for any ship.
Likewise with KDF ships. Getting a whole new design approved is probably time consuming but a new set of wings in a few varieties would be awesome.

I think the Dual Beam emitters in general need looking at. The TOS Connie has more or less the implementation I thought would happen. Captain Logan's placement on the Comet Class saucer is just about right, IMO, given the 90-degree firing arc.
But I agree on the Galaxy DBB. I don't mind they fire from the edge of the saucer, but they need to be placed much closer to the front.

That'd be cool, sort of like how the New Orleans-class (and some other ships) used similar looking components as an Galaxy-class starship.

That would be very neat, especially with weapons hardpoints. That way we don't have to have bunches of little black pimples all over our ships if we only use arrays or we could lose the phaser strips entirely if we only use cannons.
Perhaps we can have a re-work of the way the weapons look and how they fire. For example, Dual Beam Banks could fire from Ent-A/B era dual emitters, phasers from standard phaser arrays, cannon hardpoints could be re-worked to look like little cannons and turrets could look like... well.. a turreted phaser . Though it would be nice if we could have the option to make all weapons fire from the phaser arrays: DBB, turrets, cannons, etc.
Well.. except for some ships.
I'd love to see special cases, such as the Tactical Escort getting a quad cannon effect (like in the show) by equipping a dual cannon. Alternatively all ships could have unique weapon hardpoints, so that equipping multiple cannons would give quad, hex, and / or octo cannon effects (depending on how many dual cannons are equipped), and the same with other weapons.
I noticed that the Excelsior firing cannons and turrets looks a little odd. I would prefer more a look like in Startrek XI then... well, there is no comparision. It looks as if everything is firing from the same place. I think aft-weapon slots need an extra pass on many ships, too.
Runabouts can be renamed... I did mine. I couldn't find the command searching the forums. I recall it being something like /shipname. As I recall, you're still charged credits for it (if you don't have a rename token).
As for Excelsior firing out its posterior. The thing under the aft shuttlebay is listed as torpedo launchers on the AMT/ERTL model.
Mtattersall, is there any ETA on the full addition of the BoP and Intrepid wing animations..wasnt that the newer tech you were working on a couple weeks ago?

I hope we'll finally see the very traditional red striping and logo designs added to all the Fed ships like the recent Excelsior has.
There's also the matter of many ships not having those strobe lights still.
Either way, good to hear new stuff is coming and I look forward to it. Maybe we'll get some news about it this Wednesday. ;P
I bought a Runabout last night. I took it to the Orelliius Sector and it looked quite dynamic with its lighting. Most of the starships do when seen there. I don't think those forward facing intakes - under the struts - should glow as brightly as the bussard collector's on the nacelles. Right now the brightness is identical. I would vary the lighting between two functions.
I could rename it within the UI. However, it never did show on the starship itself. Before or after I renamed it. I played with the customizations and the name never did appear on the hull. Its not a game breaker for me as it isn't intended as my main ship anyway.
If overall changes are already coming for the Runabouts I will welcome them.

As I recall, it's the old Runabouts you can't rename, the ones bought before some patch. If you get one now, it's perfectly renameable (as long as you use a river's name ).

Ok... dunno if the Intrepid has been talked about before BUT!
My turn...
I'm a 3d modeler for games myself and have been looking over the Intrepid class model and I have to say... its got a huge amount of waist sitting on it. The model has had to sacrifice curves/accuracy for random TRIBBLE... i.e. the bottom of the saucer. Whoever made that thing needs shot, they not only messed up the shape totally... but they extruded it twice which is wasting a good hundred or so polys which could be put elsewhere.
Here are my suggestions in image form as I'm not great at explaining things. The reference model that i'm using is one I'm currently making... and its sitting at around 3,000 polys so I know whoever has made this previously is just lazy.

Yes! And more customizable exteriors! It's supposedly a modular ship, let's make it one for real!
While I would like to see some customisation in Runabouts, I would much rather see a similar sized shuttle offered to KDF players first.
And before anyone gives the usual "Klingons don't have shuttles" response, Klingon "shuttles" were mentioned multiple times throughout TNG. The Enterprise D even tows one into a shuttlebay in the episode Gambit Part II.
There are also numerous mentions of Klingon shuttles throughout DS9.
Obviously any vessel that isn't really capable of safely entering an atmosphere, which includes the K't'inga, Vor'Cha, and Negh'Var, is going to require some form of short-range transport vessel for the occasion when the transporters are not functional. All three of the above even have notable areas on the ship that could easily be shuttlebays.
Here are the model shots I've pulled from the ST-Bilder site. (Pulled them because ST-bilder tends to squash the pictures) Takes a tiny bit of digging in their source files, but it's not too hard to find. Figured I'd save CapnLogan the trouble, unfortunately I have no room to post it on the main page.
If anyone wants to put these into an easy to browse gallery that doesn't shrink the higher res pictures, please feel free to do so and tinycc it so I can put it on the first page.
This might sound like a silly complaint, but I get a little annoyed that i have a tiny Defiant Class ship, (which I love) but when I go into the ships interior, I have a captians quarters that is so insanely huge that it would take up a huge portion of the ship interior if it were to scale... and the hallways are ginormous... I wish that we could maybe have some selections of interiors? I know it was designed with useability in mind, but it just seems too big. it be nice even, if I could just change it, and if someone else wants to have a ship interior that couldn't possibly fit into a tiny escort? that's cool, but it seems a bit of an inconsistancy to me.

OOoooooh, I cant wait to find out what this is.
If they do, I can guarantee the interior would be larger than the exterior allows.

You mean like the current interiors if one is using a Defiant?
