Why? Every subscription-based MMO out there has a similar RAF plan. I've seen more then 1 person using a Swift Zhevra in WoW. I understand they're giving away touring rockets now. :)

Sir, you don't belong on these boards. Your rationale, patience, and common sense are really distracting from the crying, pouting, and fussing.

    Cool news!

Maybe I should just give Lt.Whatshername the emails of 4 of my friends and let them get the Galaxy-X abomination. Might put a sock in this whole argument.

Be it as it may, the Galaxy-X is a nice lure to try to get some people to "move" and tell whom they know to try the game; it's just nice marketing candy.

No one is going to please everyone, but how about this?

The ship is "canon", for the sake of saving some face 9if this topic gets bigger and is still going strong, why not release two ships at the same time similar to this? So, we have a promo offer for the Galaxy-X, well, I know new T5's are coming out, you can either state this in more bolder letters, something along the lines of, "Hey fans, for signing up 10 friends, you will get the new Galaxy-XX craft, complete with sexy lines and Double-D Nacelles to attract extra attention on the fields of battle. And we are not leaving anyone out, because we have a new in-game reward for those that find our secret mission, you can obtain the new Bright Neon Orange Defiant with flashing lights and sound that leaves a sparkle trail to confuse enemies behind you as chaffe. It comes complete with a Horn on top of the bridge and a Unicorn symbol on the side, just for our loyal fans!"

While, the Defiant does not have to be as "garish" as I described, it can still be offered along with the reward for recruiting 10 people. This is only an example (done in fun) and not meant to be serious. Just something to show you are placating your peeps/homies.

So, what you're saying is ... these 3 classic show ships ... that people have been practically BEGGING for a T5 version of ... are going to be given to the players ... at T5 ... for FREE?

    You monsters!

    ;)

When that happens, I think the Shaka emote will fall on my list of awesome things I've gotten in game for free.

That's actually what I was also trying to say in my post, but you said it better in a shorter-span.

You Cryptic guys need to "SHOW OFF" these things more obvertly and more "over the top" because people see this Galaxy-X under this new web page (the refferal program one) but the other T5 ships coming out are not really mentioned strongly or in a manner that has people noticing it.

You don't even really have to get 5 friends, you can do it yourself five times...noob. :P

Some people don't have the money to do that, especially college students and others in this depressed economy. For some, it is about principle.

But hey, by all means, buy the subs if you got the cash.

Good :p I mean, yeah, this is exactly what I was expecting, but you kinda blindsided me with the possibility of the Galaxy-X cloaking, so it's good to be sure.

Now, what are we looking at in the way of mechanics? Will there or will there not be differences in gameplay, not just cosmetically, between the Galaxy-X and Galaxy-5?

Agreed. Enough with these whiny posts of I want, I want. Exclusive rewards are just that. So we should take all the rewards away from people who deserve it? Is this Communists Online now?

That would be an uber-awesome reward....

Well when the accolade system comes out why don't you have it able to be earned by destroying 5000 galaxy-class Mirror Universe ships? You know, kinda like Champions Online. That would give people something to do and allow more people to have it?

Also, what is this about Tier 5 Defiant, Galaxy, and Intrepid? No Akira in that list? Where's my Akira!? *throws sandwich*

    Hello Parallax!

I've moved your thread to the C-Store and Promotions feedback subforum. Thanks for sharing it with us o the forums. My only small request for future posts is to add a little more specifics to your title so people can better identify what your post will be about. An example title could be "Feedback: Requesting that referral rewards be made available through normal game mechanics" :)

    Thanks!

I haven't played for a while just because of the lack of endgame.

I, myself, haven't logged into the game for about a week now.. I am just overly bored with it. I can usually play it for a few days but generally I have no motivation to continue playing. I have a lifetime, so I'll be sticking around, but for myself I'm having trouble finding something interesting or fun to do in STO.

For me, the rise of microtransactions is the deathknell of the genre. I was concerned when I was first exposed to it in City of Heroes. I said then that it set a very dangerous precedent. Soon, companies would be charging us for every little bit of minutia. Slowly but surely, that is the way it's going.

It has all but destroyed Star Wars Galaxies. It's disguised as a "Tradable Card Game," but it's really a system of microtransactions. City of Heroes, after many strong years with a solid playerbase, is virtually deserted.

DDO has gone even further, charging you for each quest line you want to do. However, DDO is free to play, with many free quests as well.

It's bad enough to have to pay for the game, then pay to play it, then pay for each bit of the game you want to play. It's like signing up for online chess and being charged for the rooks.

Microtransactions will put an end to the MMO genre, sooner or later. I can only hope STO doesn't kill itself bu overdoing the microtransactions.

Everquest 2 seemed to find a good middleground for me.

I'll admit I'm not really mourning the lack of accessibility for the Galaxy-X. What I'm less pleased about is having just invited a friend to play STO and having him subscribe for a month a couple of days before the Referal Program comes out.

I wanted the holographic bridge crewmember. T_T

I think I've seen only one forum poster who also registered Jul 2008 when the forums opened that is STILL a fanboy.

Everyone else... yea... I don't think any of will be giving Cryptic our business in the future. It would be such a sign of defeat on their behalf if they relinquished the right to the IP to some other company... but for the IP itself and probably for much of its fanbase, it would be an act of great nobility and selflessness. I for one would be happy if they gave it to someone else.

They aren't doing as bad as you want them to. Get off your high horse and get back down to the ground.

STO at its core, is a good game. It is lacking a lot, but it's not as horrible or as fargone as some of you make it out to be. You're still here.

So, to get back to the OP -

I happen to agree with your assessment of the Galaxy X being a bit much. I never expected them to go on and add a super-cannon functionality and cloak. They do seem to be suggesting all end-game ship designs they are currently working on will be like that, but *shrug*

My love of being contrary to Lt.Expendable (on this one point) aside, I'd be happy to earn a different ship entirely. The first thing I thought of was actually that this should have been a Bajoran lightship - something awesome, exclusive, but ultimately just a cool non-combat vanity reward.

Unfortunately, I'm sure there would be an entire thread about how unfair it is that there be any reward whatsoever for anything... at least from the 5 posters who make all the noise.

I do have to disagree with one point... I actually would love end game ships to be more unique... add some more variation to what different ships can do... Unique is fun... that being said... having to recruit 5 friends for the Galaxy-X is a bit too much IMO... one would be fine...

Agreed. While I usually shell out money for C-Store stuff, putting these things in a refer-a-friend program is too much. Especially the Bridge Officer and Galaxy-X. If you are hesitant to release them to the general public then they should at least be veteran rewards. Recruit-a-friend rewards should be buffing abilities for you and your friend to help level (like you have done so) titles, and some cryptic points rewards. Special vanity pets are nice as well, but NOT Bridge Officers, NOT Uniforms, and sure as hell NOT T5 starships.

Really though you should start releasing some of those starships for free, at least the canon ones. The special Bridge Officers make sense as a C-Store purchases or Veteran rewards. I have to wonder though when you will start releasing things other than episodic content for your subscribers. That is what they are subscribing for.

As a lifetimer I don't really have to worry about that, but you still have to wonder...

This Galaxy X and Hologram bridge boff should be an special unlock in my C-Store, Since I am and many others invested in this game before it went live, We PRELAUNCH LIFETIME INVESTORS WHO HAVE NOT GOT GREAT RETURNS. NEED SOME LOVE! This should be a Veterans reward for new lifers and Veterans who have been around long enough to be considered a monthly lifer(299. spent in subscriptions) as a side note be available by signing up 1 referral for the boff and 3 for the galaxy X.

I DO NOT CON MY FRIENDS INTO SHARING MY MISERY, SO THAT I MAY EXCEPT A BRIBE OF A HOLO BOFF OR SHINNY NEW SHIP. Just i mprove the game so everyone will want to be a part of it :)

Can you tell me why... why must paying subscribers pay even more for any additions?

If anything, additions to the game SHOULD be free because you've already paid money up front: Whether you're a lifetime, monthly, or any of the other subscription rates.

Later on when this game finally rates being called "Good," and has alot of things to do, customizations, etc., I can see having to pay for an Expansion Pack that brings in a huge gob of content.

But the system in place right now?

    Subscription Payments + C Store = Nickel & Diming

Is the C-Store a means to compensate for lifetime subscriptions at some future date? I wouldn't even begin to know how to calculate Cyrptics bottom line as far as that goes and if offering lifetime subs would negatively impact them at all at some point. Just curious is all.
