They are remaking the Evangelion series into 4 movies. The first is out in the States (was released on DVD the same day as the new Star Trek) already, second should be over soonish. The first movie was called Rebuild of Evangelion 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone, the second is Rebuild of Evangelion 2.0: You (Cannot) Advance. The first movie stays close to the series's first 3 angels, but the second movie starts veering off the original story.

2.0 was announced some time ago. CGI Eva battles with as you can see a few changes to the pilots.
I think the writers have read some Evangelion fanfiction like Shinji 40k, which is the best Evangelion fiction I have read. Better then the original I think. By the time Chapter 30 rolls around and a company of Terminators and Leman Russ battle tanks roll through the streets of Tokyo 3 fighting an army of zombies, you wonder both 'how did this happen?' and how can it get more awesome?'.

1.0 at least was MUCH better then the original I thought. And the soundtrack is freaking awesome.
