The death penalty as it stands is fine. Please don't change it to something like having to waste money on ship repairs or XP loss. Both of those have proved boring and hindersome in other MMOs.
I believe that Death Penalty is on the survey. I would tell your non-forum friends to get theirs done if they don't want a DP.
However, just being able to zerg until it's dead is INCREDIBLY boring imo. And mos of us that want a DP aren't looking to break your back or bank, just something to prevent the zerg.
Well then don't zerg... I don't, but I really did not sign up for a death penalty either. You know I keep harping on this... but maybe the solution is to design it so one can't zerg... yeah that is harder to do, but would be far more enriching to the game.
But at this point I am soooo put out I'm about to deal with cryptic. I'm about to close my champion's online account and force cryptic to refund my lifetime (less the month I have played)..
I didn't like wow's constant TRIBBLE with the talent tree... I didn't care for lotro's trashing my legendaries (given I have a life time there too)... Sony and SWG... enough said... Had I know the CU was coming I would have saved my money.
The idea of TRIBBLE with the game mechanics when the major problems are lack of content, poor game AI and sad team mechanics.
Why don't you fix those things first? To me boring is cleaning up after a failure, when all that is going to happen is I will try something different. A death penalty is cheap elevator music while I'm preparing to try again and I'm certainly not paying for it and this has gotten me just about done with the whole mmo fad.
I'd like to respond to one comment made by Craig. Craig stated that some of us don't think they listen to us and he said "we do". I think more updates like this post would help show "the users" that their voice is being heard. Updates every couple of days telling us what Cryptic is working on, what challenges they are facing. It is very easy for people to get frustrated when playing in a vacuum. This post was great communication, keep it coming!!
QUESTION:
In previous posts we have heard that the subscription response was much greater than originally anticipated. Another post before that stated that Cryptic had only planned to make updates to the game 1 year out, to see how much interest there was in the game. Based on the response, do you know if there is already enough subscriptions to justify updates beyond a year? If so, how far out are you planning updates (granted that the content of the updates may change)? I'm just try to gage if funding for the game has been secured?
Rommies should be next, after klinks are finished.
As far as the death penalty...PLEASE think outside the box here and go for a death CONSEQUENCE....
Use death as a vehicle to launch into a series of immersive minigames that bring the bridge and your ship interior to life in a COMPLETELY star trek fashion...
Here is what I mean:
Before your ship blows up, it gets "incappped". During this time, as an engineer you would play a QUICK, fast, fun, minigame to avert a warp core breach, or bring life support back online...these would be done on "consoles" on the bridge or in engineering. If you succeed, you get back into the fight with a small energy buff - if you fail, well the ship goes kaboom, and you respawn with a debuff...
As a tactical officer, your minigames could be things like managing internal security system to repel boarders, or disarming a chroniton torpedo warhead that had pierced the hull, but not yet exploded...
A science officer could use a console minigame to navigate the ship out of some anomaly that that last volley of photons blasted your ship into, or a minigame to triage or heal the crew, etc.
It should be TRIVIAL to come up with 5 or so, fast, fun minigames, for each class based on exmaples from the series' of ways to save the bacon...then they would be triggered at random. Faster you complete the minigame successfully, faster you get back into the fight...
Fact is the episodes/series are full of countless examples of heroic effort by the captain and/or bridge officers to due various things to save the ship or the crew after things have all gone wrong. This is star trek. This would be immersion. PLEASE do NOT dumb the game down to some stupid, pay x amt of energy credits, sink that is unimaginative and pass up this kind of a chance to generate REAL, exciting, immersive content where your ship and your crew depend on your minigame actions....and those consoles we see in our interiors actually are USED for something...lol
I want a nonaligned faction that flies souped up versions of the civilian craft. Freighters, random alien warships, etc. With of course the option to choose from many of the civilian clothing options. We could get a lot of missions involving running cargo from point A to point B.
I'm actually touched, even HEARTENED to read this so early in the Game development. The reference to the Players/User/Community are more than meaningful, they trigger a hope that we SHARE the thrill of this unfolding spectacle and experience with it's Creators.
Which brings up an Idea: Enable enrollment in ad hoc team-sized sharing actualizations - - for players equipped with webcams and suitable voice and willing to enroll - an ad hoc LIVE call to a team discussion about something just experienced - a mission, a PvP engagement, a character creation - what have you.
The Objective - when well-meaning, expertise-laden developers confront a WALL of what the PLAYER-Base wants - have a mechanism to BRING them (Live Players) into the frey. LIVE - while the action is FRESH, and enough of a sampling is available to witness whether there's consensus or no.. The webcam insinuates an element of responsibility, as does voice - and it creates an aura of meaning and reality that simple chat and forum survey completing does not.
Plus - trust me on this - Players actually invited into a session with developers would want a token to put on their Bridge Wall, and probably stay FOREVER.... which is not to say they'd complain any less....
Sadly, though, they took the easy way out on CoH, too. When producing the first Superhero MMO, they passed on PvP in the one genre where it best makes sense. In the Alpha/Beta phases, I was a huge proponent of nemeses as being the most natural thing for immersion. That, and collateral damage (which did not appear until the crafting and timed instance releases).
Bravo, if they take the initiative to introduce something new, instead of just remaking CoH and skinning it with the Star Trek brand!

Star Trek fans have dreamed of games that are realistic to the shows. Cryptic, the above is an example of what we are waiting on you to implement.
Sadly, I think you are in the mode of doing everything as quickly and cost effectively as possible... which means you won't invest in something as compelling as a death minigame. If you are receiving the massive player support like you say, please consider developing mechanics that mirror the TV shows. That's what will really hook sci-fi fans.
2. True 3d space flight. We want to loop and fly freely in space, so that it actually feels more...space! Again something that needs major engine tweaking.
I agree. The limits on teh z axis in space is annoying. You see an enemy above you and u have to fly way out in from them and then turn back into them because you can't move straight up.
"We already know what you think about a death penalty, Craig but The Community really thinks it's a good idea and their opinion is more valid than yours because they probably don't own goats."
There are many of us in the community who do not support a death penalty.

I think there should be one, but not until they fix those enemies hanging out by spawn points & enemy alpha strike issues. Otherwise Tac officers will be at a huge disadvantage.
Its a small thing but still I would love to see added the following Starship Class added, Excelsior class and Oberth class at Lt Rank the Ambassador class at the Lt. Commander Rank the Nebula class starship at Commander Rank.
Also Bridge Combat much like you can do on the Game Bridge Commander, away missions that have more puzzles instead of just running up to a console and hitting "F" you have to solve a simple puzzle or mini game, see Star Trek Elite Force 2 for an example.
What a text! Really inspiring while addressing all major issues.
It really makes me proud of you, Cryptic, I thank you all!
And we're kinda sorry being such a terrible multi-headed feedback monster... And kinda not, because it obviously helps this to become the best MMO to date
Nah really, I now feel really respected by you as a company. Having been on the other end I know how difficult it is to keep the communication channels open and to let everybody know they are open.
* Respec - can't wait. Took me a while to figure BO's out and my spec is a mess, will be nice to fix it.
* Death Penalty - hmmm, touch and go here. I don't mind paying to repair gear, but don't want to lose items as in some other mmo's. Also, you'll have to fix the "wandering enemy target's" issue. I zone in, or worse yet get PULLED in and am torn to pieces by 15 ships. That would be a real downer for repair bills.
* Difficulty Slider - yes yes
* More open auto-fire - because pressing the space bar is hard
* Replayable missions - yes yes yes
* Improving Memory Alpha - YES YES YES
* Fixing those Commodity missions - there's a problem?
I played WoW for 5 years and was caught in the hype. Got to the point where you didn't even know WHY you played, jsut that you did. STO is what WoW was 3 years ago, fresh, exciting and jsut complicated enou gh to make you think. Thanks for the past month Cryptic and here's to many more !
I never run out of content since I use clusters to upgrade my ship components. I actually would like a feature like CoH has where you can turn XP off. That way I wouldn't out level my episode missions. But the upcoming difficulty bar should address that.
A CoH-like XP Debt system would be good. You keep gaining xp from everything, just at half the rate until your debt is paid. In CoH after a mission or two your debt is gone.
You grind. You like to grind. That's fine. I don't mind it. People should not be forced to grind however because the vast majority HATE IT and an XP penalty WOULD force that due to lack of content.
If they force a grind, and an XP penalty at this point WOULD do that, they will hemorrhage subs. Simple as that. Most people won't stand for forced PvP and grinding as most folks are casual and that's not in their agenda. This makes an XP penalty nowhere close to a viable solution at this juncture in the game's life cycle, and that's certainly not going to change in the near future.
I'm wondering how will you decide which faction to add next? And what sort of time frame we are looking at? I'm finding it a little boring playing through as my 'cardassian' alien federation puppet knowing I'll have to do it all over again when cardassians finally get launched.
So is there any chance we can get given a hint what the time frame for more factions is and which one is likely to be picked?
I certainly like some of what I read. Star Trek is an amazing universe to play in and this game is just a baby step or two into that universe.
IMHO, here is what I would like to see.
1. Foster conflict between the playable races, this has so much potential.
2. Have systems that can be conquered and reinforced, i.e. turrets, bases, ground fortifications. Conquering and losing a system should have consequences for your faction and the fleet(s) involved.
3. Ground combat was very lightly covered in the TV series and movies. This also seems to be the part of the game that needs a lot of polish. For example I hit an unshielded target with a phaser and he doesn't go POOF!
4. The 'crafting' system needs a lot of work and should follow your career path
Please add bridge combat and ship interiors asap!!!!!!
Death penalty = positively wretched idea.
Positively EXCELLENT idea on bridge combat. That's why I signed up for this game because I thought it was going to be multiplayer bridge combat ala the multiplayer ships in SWG.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE put bridge combat in the game. Right now, space is nothing more than a 3rd person flight sim.
I agree. The limits on teh z axis in space is annoying. You see an enemy above you and u have to fly way out in from them and then turn back into them because you can't move straight up.
Good call on this suggestion!!
I second this. It is bad enough that space combat is a 3rd person flight sim, but with a limited z axis, it is a POOR 3rd person flight sim.
"We already know what you think about a death penalty, Craig but The Community really thinks it's a good idea and their opinion is more valid than yours because they probably don't own goats."
There are many of us in the community who do not support a death penalty.
Really. I would like to know who said that because the reading I have done on the DP is, at best, evenly split. I think more are agin it than for it.
I have to say the game has become a bit repetative for me of late and i was probably going to kick it into touch soon, but this little article has turned my head, Age of conan was exactly like STO, bad launch, plenty of bugs, devs seeming not to pay attention and no contact, i left that game and havent gone back.
But zinc has turned everything around for me, i am very impressed with this article, even more impressed that the things you *said* would be implemented like less queues etc HAVE been implemented.
Keep it up Cryptic, your doing a good job, cant wait to see where you take us!
Nice damage control here but finally at least we have a glimpse into the future with STO.
DPs. If you are going to add a DP then please be ORIGINAL about it. Don't knock XP down or make us fly back from the nearest Starbase or whatever. Do something new and relevant to the game for us. How about these ideas:
- Give X number of chances (lives) before the player is kicked out of the engagement. Strike X and you're out and you have to rejoin back in. (applying to the standard encounters/missions as they are now). For Raid missions then there could be some other penalty.
- Knock out a Bridge officer. After a defeat your Tact officer won't wake up. He/She will come around in a few seconds (or better when Chief Med Officer). Allow that Bridge officer to be replaced for the time being - or not.
- Don't have all the systems comeback online at once. Maybe Phasers are being "worked on" and will need 60 seconds depending on your Engineer.
- Please don't treat the factions the same for DP. Defeat for a Klingon would be much more of an issue than for the Feds. Defeats should be a way to slow down promotions. A commander with 15,000 defeats is not going to win Warrior of the year awards much less get promoted. Maybe time to see the Chancellor and hope he doesn't KILL you!
Next round of goodies for us:
A lot of people have brought up great points that need to be focused on both in and out of this long thread. The game is incomplete in so many areas that is where the attention should be first to get us out of this Beta phase.
Some things I'd like to see:
- Ability to have more Bridge Officers. Don't need to change the number that is active on a bridge but can we at least have more officers active to swap them in and out? I have a crew of 400 yet only 7 of them can do anything for me? I want more people.
- Have us lose a Bridge officer. Story driven like they have been asked by Quinn to go to another ship (unless you strongly protest and suggest a different officer); maybe a bridge officer dies or is captured. Do something cool with these opportunities that STO gives the players!
- Inventory slots. Why would a tribble take up the same space as a Phaser Array? Isn't my ship big enough so that I can stack more items?Or at least allow me to put my tribbles into a box that holds 20? More room please. My Engineer swears he has space for more items.
- Promotion ceremony was awesome. Please have more things like this.
- Make the worlds LARGER. When I beam down a run around the planets feel smaller than my backyard patio. These worlds look HUGE from space so why can't they have a City, economy, cultural items, etc. Maybe we could recruit from worlds? Would be nice.
Some of it sounds great, especially the playable Romulans idea. But seriously, death penalties? Why do people think death needs to be penalized even more? Having to run or fly back through the whole blasted mission is penalty enough =P
Anyway, those are my thoughts.
Nice damage control here but finally at least we have a glimpse into the future with STO.

Hey, I actually like that idea. Although I was wondering why the weapons, console stations, and BOs were not effected by damage anyways? I mean if your hull is down to 12% and the crew almost dead, why would everything be working like new anyways? It's classic Star Trek to have your computers explode all around you, and the crew shifting from side to side (everyone lean left).
You grind. You like to grind. That's fine. I don't mind it. People should not be forced to grind however because the vast majority HATE IT and an XP penalty WOULD force that due to lack of content.

Maybe you never played CoX but the XP debt does not force anyone to grind. It's 50% xp for a mission or two then you're done. It's a very light death penalty.
Plus what I do doesn't feel like a grind. It's progress towards upgrades just like there's progress towards ranking up. Everything in MMO's is a grind - it's only an illusion that the main content isn't one. You are essentially killing the same NPCs in different environmens with different text over and over = grind. Only difference is that cluster missions can be completed more quickly.
Having Admirals flying around a couple days after release proves its extremely easy to level in this game. It's not a grindy game no matter what you do. A little XP debt for dying won't hurt anyone and hemmorhaging subs from it is laughable. If someone can't handle 50% xp for 15 minutes they need to go play Hello Kitty Online.

I can help a little with this one; How about Big Dig to begin with?
Which brings up an Idea: Enable enrollment in ad hoc team-sized sharing actualizations - - for players equipped with webcams and suitable voice and willing to enroll - an ad hoc LIVE call to a team discussion about something just experienced - a mission, a PvP engagement, a character creation - what have you.
