I really do love the game and the amount of depth you've put into it and I look forward to every add-on you do. I know one of the things I would really like to see incorporated is a first person shooter when on the ground, or mysteries you can solve on the bridge by putting together pieces during a mission and solving them on the terminals or something, or fixing a warp core breach by some type of puzzle, or adding modifications to weapons. I mean I love the Zelda games not because of the fantasy but because of the puzzles and the challenge involved. But in STO most of the missions tell you exactly what to do and when to do it and when people are talking and telling you what to do the end line is always yellow, I would want it to be where you have to piece it together yourself. I don't know maybe its just me but I don't like to beat games right away, I like to struggle incredibly hard for days or weeks on just one thing, and then when you finally accomplish it its the best feeling ever. I remember the Star Trek The Next Generation Game for Sega Genesis, that game was so hard I still haven't beaten it till this day and I got it when I was like 6 years old, its incredibly fun because of that, because every-time I progress its awesome, but I'm not asking for it to be that hard, but people are already admirals and its only been out for a month or so, that's why I'm pacing myself by collecting everything along the way hoping to slow my progress, but the only way I ever truly feel like I've accomplished something is when I had to work my absolute hardest to achieve it. Kinda like the Crystaline Entity, I haven't beaten it yet but when I do, I'll feel awesome and have huge bragging rights. I guess what I would really like to see is a more in depth feel to the game, to involve you a little more as a real life star trek captain. thank you again for everything you guys have done

I would like to point out to you the folly of actually downtrodding your source of income (SOE SWG) (FUNCOM AoC) just to name the two biggest flops with the two biggest fan based followings. Both companies thought they could afford to lose customers and now they are sitting in their offices wondering how they can bring back some of the players they ran off.

I would imagine that this crowd of subscribers is all new to the people of cryptic as they have never had a major fan based game title like Star Trek before and the feeling of being on the top of the world is most likely very strong, but remember your predesessors in SOE and FUNCOM. Their lesson is the top of the world has a steep cliff to fall off of if you make enough players mad at you, and talking bad about them is a good way to start.

    I love this post. :D

I didn't see mention of the problems with many of the fleet action episodes not giving credit, or their being damn near impossible unless the WHOLE team acts together, as in a RAID. Crystal Entity anyone? Possibly make a way to only allow full teams into the episodes? 10 man raid groups, or 15 or 20?

As for Death Penalty, I think it is a good thing. Damage to gear requiring repair would be an excellent credit sink. Especially if the equipment eventually wears out. I think DDO has probably the best implemented death penalty I've seen. Scales with level, naturally, repairing becomes semi-automatic. A Death Penalty encourages you to work in groups and to actually THINK before pulling a Leeroy Jenkins maneuver. As it is, I can take my Galaxy down the throat of the boss klingon, set off Ramming Speed! to take him down and be back fighting before the last little guy is cleaned up. Possibly a reason to increase respawn time too?

Thanks for the info on state of the game.
I am an "easy one", since I am a lifetime subcriptioner, I can't say "I leave and you have no fees from me"... :D
Doesn't mean I will accept anything of course, but if enhancements are made as promised in not too long time frames, it is fine for me. The balancing act of pleasing everybody will never be possible anyway, I am afraid.

Well, I still want to be able to color my weapons, skills, and ship explosions as I was before with powerhue. I really hate even using brace for impact as it turns my whole ship pink. Among many other reasons... I only ask it be brought back with a client side option to see all default colors that is, by default, showing default. That way no one will see anything different unless they hunt down and change that option.

I won't speak on DP until I find out what, exactly, the DP will be.

No regrets of my purchase of STO.

Please don't destroy the coolest aspect of this MMO over all the others where you don't penalise us for bigthing off more than we can chew and attacking fella's bigger than us!

I agree 100%. For those of us who can't spend a multitude of hours each day playing online, a DP that is too extreme would be a definite 'Show stopper’ for me.

The thoughts of having to play for hours to regain items and skills that I lost for accidentally flying straight into a Borg squadron or something turns my stomach.
Or better yet, your in the middle of holding your own outnumber against the Klingon’s and a group of players de-cloak behind you and blow u to bits.
Why on earth, or I guess more appropriately, why in the universe would ANYONE ask for this.

PLEASE use caution when considering DPs. If this is not thought through, it could be devastating to the user base.

dp make speople think a little before they make a decision. it makes alot of diffrence, what they need to do though is make the dp so it doesnt cost you xp or creits. it should be in the shape of equipment durability and effectivness. if you get wasted your gear looses half its effectiveness. this owuld mean you would need to start think ing about purchaseing new geer and taking a bit more care next time you aimlessly jump into battle..

i dont think there should be a death penalty for pvp though. dp in pvp is just too harsh.

If anywhere there should be a DP, it's in PvP. At least there you aren't ganked while loading in the map like DSE's.

Not sure if anyone has suggested this on the death penalty subject... 90-odd pages is an eye watering amount to read all the way through... But why not have a survival bonus rather like the hero point star thingy in Champions instead?

A bonus on how your crew perform the more missions and encounters you survive without going kaboom.

The idea of having any penalty for death tied to the difficulty slider would get my vote too. Seems the best compromise for keeping most of the people happy.

Yes, the CO thing I mentioned in here on one of the 90 pages. :)

If they do DP like the way it is on CO only add a "return to stardock" removal thing as well (CO doesn't have a hospital). So people could just work their stars back up or do a trip to stardock but their choice.

Late last night it finally struck me - As a lvl 45 Rear Admiral I had finally gotten a little bored of the game. I had committed to resubing the first month but beyond that, I wasn't sure. Yet after reading the "State of the Game" I've been quickened with great confidence in the dev team; Not just from the news of whats to come and/or change, but due to how forcefully you are defending Star Trek Online. It is very reassuring and I appreciate that.

Did think it might have been, but after 40 pages, my eyeballs started to feel like they were melting so I did a Spaced and skipped to the end.

The buyback thing would be sensible too, and best of all, totally voluntary!

Made me LMAO! :D So true! I hope this isn't a sign you're getting tired of our demands. It's just that we've been in love with Star Trek since little kids and we want our game to live up to its potential.

And Death Penalty... got no problem with it as long as you keep it simple. Do something like XP Debt from City of Heroes. That way we can still get back into action after dying. But the more you die the more debt you accumulate.

The content isn't there to support it unless they expect players to grind Clusters or PvP. You need an abundance of missions at each level, many more than required to advance, to support a system like that and the content just isn't there.

Hasn't the communication been there? I mean, what do they need to say? What happens if they mention something and it breaks? What happens if they communicate plans to implement changes that were then later decided against? If you haven't noticed, Feedback from members in the MMO community can be quite arrogant, crude, and discouraging when their expectations are not met. I make it a point to try and read the information on the launcher whenever Iaunch the game. I haven't been surprised yet when they announce a server shutdown to apply a patch. The big thing that folks forget is that Cryptic is an organization that has policies, procedures, and methods. Sometimes its not simple to communicate some things when the decisions are not immediately made. We all have a resource to voice our opinion, concerns, and suggestions. I trust that they read them and although they may not respond or communicate doesn't mean that it all falls on death ears. They game has the components to ensure that you make it to the required level of completion. :)

Many thanks for your post and your take.

I am going to use only one instance of a post . After launch there was a post saying new hardware was expected at the weekend. I never saw any further communication on this matter.

It may be that there was but I just wasn't able to find it.

I feel that one thing that contributes to not finding Cryptic posts is there are soooo many older posts lingering around. It would help (at least for me) if moderators cleaned up the threads a bit more. Maybe some new folders for older posts or non-relevant or no longer relevant posts.

As for what do they need to say - that they are aware of the issue and are working the issue. Sort, sweet, and to the point posts would work for me.

Also, if there was some way to flag Cryptic posts so a reader doesn't have to read through dozens of pages of player responses.

Why are people so big on adding penalties for death? They're already there where they matter -- die in a fleet action? Kiss goodbye your chances of taking 1st place. Die in PvP? That's the point and why they keep score.

I love not having any debilitating penaties for dying. It doesn't add anything to the game by having them -- it just ****es you off having to re-gain experience or waiting to get back up to full strength.

No penalties for dying! Give rewards for living!

I believe that Death Penalty is on the survey. I would tell your non-forum friends to get theirs done if they don't want a DP.

However, just being able to zerg until it's dead is INCREDIBLY boring imo. And mos of us that want a DP aren't looking to break your back or bank, just something to prevent the zerg.

EXACTLY! This game has so many things that need to be fixed or added, that DP should be pretty low on the list if at all!

    Here's the text:

    Special Task Force Missions
If you're looking for a challenge, look no further than our upcoming “Special Task Force” Missions - Raid Episodes, which combine bold storytelling with our toughest five-man missions yet. These are just a few of the Raid Episodes we'll be rolling out over the coming weeks, beginning a week after launch. Raid Episodes are available to both Federation and Klingon players.

    Special Task Force: Infected

Starfleet has lost contact with one of its star bases. More than 400 officers could be lost, including a key member of Starfleet's Borg Task Force. Infiltrate the base and take the fight to the Borg!

•Retake the Sibiran system and shut down a transwarp conduit being used by the Borg to establish a foothold in the Gamma Orionis Sector Block.
•Investigate the strange new nanovirus the Borg are using to assimilate entire worlds at alarming speeds.
•Retake Starbase 89 before it is fully taken overrun by the Borg, and save what is left of the Starfleet personnel that are still there.
•Locate Captain Ogen’s Strike Team and Rebecca Simmons, the lead Borg Task Force researcher working on a cure for the nanovirus. Both went deep into the Borg infected starbase and haven’t reported back in quite some time.
•Infected is an extremely challenging a five-man mission, designed for a full party of players level 43 and higher.
•Lockstep teamwork and strategy will be required to defeat one of the toughest challenges yet in Star Trek Online.
    •Releasing February 2010.

    Special Task Force: The Cure

The Klingon Defense Force has been conducting its own investigation into the Borg advance, and they believe that the Collective's next target is the Vorn system. Enemies may have to unite when confronted by a greater foe.

•Assist the I.K.S. Kang in a desperate battle with the Borg.
•Explore a planet that has been completely assimilated. Can you rescue the warriors before they are taken over by the Borg?
•Fight at the side of Ja'rod, son of Lursa.
•Free Klingon ships from Borg control, and gain their assistance in a final battle with a Borg fleet.

    Special Task Force: Khitomer Accord

Finally, the mysteries of the Borg attack on Vega Colony are revealed! Why did the Borg attack there, and how was an unprepared Starfleet able to defeat them?

•Confront the Borg before they can use temporal anomalies to change the past of the Federation.
•Warp back into your own past, in the hours before the attack on Vega Colony.
•Discover a base where thousands of Borg drones are being held in stasis. What are the Borg's plans for this hidden army?
•Starfleet's not ready for the Borg. A defeat here could mean that the entire Alpha Quadrant falls. Balance the scales and fight the Borg for the preservation of the quadrant.
•Learn the fate of a missing Romulan empress.

Special Task Force: Into the Hive

The fate of the Alpha Quadrant hangs in the balance. Enter a unicomplex and confront the Borg Queen herself.

•Rescue civilians trapped on an assimilated world.
•Follow the trail to a unicomplex, and penetrate deep into the Borg stronghold.
•Confront the Borg Queen, and fight for the fate of the galaxy.

Special Task Force: Children of Khan

Amar Singh escapes from Federation custody, and he and an underground group of Augments steal the U.S.S. Asgard and race toward the remains of the Mutara Nebula. Can you stop them before they start a new Eugenics War?

•Fight a fleet assembled by Princep Khan and his followers.
•Beam onto the Asgard, and battle through its corridors to save civilians and crew.
•Confront the Princep. Can you deal with his transporter tricks?
•Save the divided Asgard and give the saucer section a chance to escape!

Thanks for the heads up on things to come in development. It is good that you are addressing most of the things I would say that need attention.

Three things that I have not seen any remark on and that are largely requested by the community (as far as I've seen) are:

    1. Less instancing. The game is very heavily instanced. I believe this should be something to aim for in your first major engine update.

    2. True 3d space flight. We want to loop and fly freely in space, so that it actually feels more...space! :) Again something that needs major engine tweaking.

    3. Something needs to be done with sector view. It's most boring part of the game.

I never run out of content since I use clusters to upgrade my ship components. I actually would like a feature like CoH has where you can turn XP off. That way I wouldn't out level my episode missions. But the upcoming difficulty bar should address that.

A CoH-like XP Debt system would be good. You keep gaining xp from everything, just at half the rate until your debt is paid. In CoH after a mission or two your debt is gone.
