I'd like to see an actual poll on death penalty. Not just a Yes/No poll, but one with several options on what the penalty might be. While I am not really pro death penalty, I might be for a minor boost for not dying, ala Champions "hero points" Maybe call them "plot points" or something similar.
basically if one in your team dies u are back to gameplay of no death penalty. Kinda light version of a very important concept.
yup no penelty but you still loose the achievemnt so everyone is happy those who dont want the DP and those who do want it. Those who dont want the DP can say oh well lets lets just enjoy the rest of this mission and not feel a sence of loss where those who do want the DP can sit there and be  for loosing the incentive but stilll get the typical rewaed for completing it.
Rommies should be next, after klinks are finished.
As far as the death penalty...PLEASE think outside the box here and go for a death CONSEQUENCE....
Use death as a vehicle to launch into a series of immersive minigames that bring the bridge and your ship interior to life in a COMPLETELY star trek fashion...
Here is what I mean:
Before your ship blows up, it gets "incappped". During this time, as an engineer you would play a QUICK, fast, fun, minigame to avert a warp core breach, or bring life support back online...these would be done on "consoles" on the bridge or in engineering. If you succeed, you get back into the fight with a small energy buff - if you fail, well the ship goes kaboom, and you respawn with a debuff...
As a tactical officer, your minigames could be things like managing internal security system to repel boarders, or disarming a chroniton torpedo warhead that had pierced the hull, but not yet exploded...
A science officer could use a console minigame to navigate the ship out of some anomaly that that last volley of photons blasted your ship into, or a minigame to triage or heal the crew, etc.
It should be TRIVIAL to come up with 5 or so, fast, fun minigames, for each class based on exmaples from the series' of ways to save the bacon...then they would be triggered at random. Faster you complete the minigame successfully, faster you get back into the fight...
Fact is the episodes/series are full of countless examples of heroic effort by the captain and/or bridge officers to due various things to save the ship or the crew after things have all gone wrong. This is star trek. This would be immersion. PLEASE do NOT dumb the game down to some stupid, pay x amt of energy credits, sink that is unimaginative and pass up this kind of a chance to generate REAL, exciting, immersive content where your ship and your crew depend on your minigame actions....and those consoles we see in our interiors actually are USED for something...lol
I hope the devs can hear this through all the chatter. This is a great idea.
I think in-ship mission should be part of the game anyway. How many episodes took place almost entirely on the ship?? Quite a few!
If the death penalty is really going to be eve like then well i wasted my life time subscriber fee.
OF COURSE it won't be an EVE-style DP, the game literally doesn't not HAVE the support mechanisms to help you get back on your feet after losing your ships, the way EVE does.
Hell, most MMOs these days don't have a DP as harsh as EVE. Also, don't want to lose ships in EVE? Don't undock. Felt it had to be said.
If you guys say you listen to the posters then read ALL THE POSTS that say we DO NOT want a death penalty. I don't play for multiples endless hours to "pimp" my ship out. Unfortunately I don't live with my parents....I am a grow @ss man with a 12 hour a day job. The death penalty would just set back what progress I have been able to achieve. The people that are cre crying for this DP are people with no jobs and living with their parents because instead of spending time trying to get a job and contributing to society they sit on their butt living of their parents and spending all their time playing the game. Case and point.....NO DEATH PENALTY!!!
I work in a dev shop.... you can never apease everyone.
Let's show these guys some Luv.......
STO gets my vote
LOL, I think of that every time I come to the forums. I am so glad I code in a closed environment, were it's not open to the harsh criticism of the public. And not just any public mind you, but the harshest (most loving) fan base of any franchise in history. Just yesterday at work, I found a bug in a program that I had introduced over two years ago. It was so buried, that it took the users this long to find it. That didn't keep me from brooding for over an hour of how I could have made such a bone head mistake in a maintenance change. I am a well paid, good intentioned, and skilled professional, but as the old saying goes, stuff happens. At least I didn't have to get 2000 emails telling what a bone head I was.
It would be hard enough to keep the fans of any property like Star Trek happy, but we all know that Star Trek has some of the most demanding fans in world. I don't mean that in a bad way, as I consider myself on of those fans. And from a Star Trek perspective, you guys knocked the ball out of the park!!! Sure, there are some examples of content that isn't too trekish, A certain Romulan/Unidine mission comes to mind were I ended up killing a lot of innocent Romulan scientists, even though I had figured out 1/4 of the way through the mission, that the Admiral was up to no good and if I had the option, I would have refused her orders, which Picard and Kirk did many times. But no developer in the world has ever gotten everything right. You certainly aren't the first IT shop to salvage your test system for parts for the live system, only to realize afterward, you really need the test system. Your not the first programmers to misspell something in a help text, and you didn't invent the term 'BUG', it was out long before any of you ever touched a keyboard. In fact (for those that don't know), it was coined before a computer had a keyboard. If you aren't in IT, you don't realize how much IT, is sometimes like working triage in a field hospital. No resource is infinite, man hours, creativity, coding yourself into a corner, processing power, etc are all constraints that a developer has to live with. At the end of the day, there are just so many hours you can code and only so many problems you can fix.
I have no doubt, that you all are having a lot of sleepless nights and bleary eyed days busting your backsides to improve the game. And while others may or may not have voiced this, flaws and all, this is THE BEST TREK GAME EVER! Trek has a history of REALLY bad games, and you guys have given us a good one with the potential to be a GREAT one. Thanks for that.
As far as the update content itself goes, I am anxiously looking forward to seeing all that you do. Things like First officers, more content, explorable ships, diplomatic missions, more ships, and better Klingons have me totally jazzed. I keep wondering when I visit my bridge, what the tactical officer thinks she is doing sitting in the First Officers chair? And while I personally LOVE NO DEATH PENALTY, if the community as a whole wants it, I can live with it. Just that if I get a vote, it's to leave that part as is. As someone said, a 20 second DEFEATED screen is enough of a slap on the wrist for me. As far as my guilty pleasure wish list goes, the three things that would be at the top would be 1) holster my weapon when beaming into a friendly situation, 2) fix my goatee, so that it's all black and not partially black and partially blond, 3) Add a TOS style bridge for my Connie!
Please, have faith in yourselves, the game you have created, and the fans that love what you are doing! As long as you listen to your customers and differentiate between the vocal minority and the real fan base, you will live long and prosper!;)
I want them to fix all the current issues before they announce a shitload of new stuff (what not gonna happen anyway)
As long they not even able to fix little things like an fleetaction how should anybody believe they gonna do all these things they have on their new list....
A list of these things would be nice. I am not having any technical issues at all. The only issue i have had is the TOS uniform issue. They have been planning the day 45 patch sense closed beta. Not implementing it would be very bad. Particualrly for the Klingon players who have waited very patently...and sometime not patently at all for it.
I am taking a guess that you have never played a MMORPG before but they regularly get content patches. Like the day 45 patch that is upcoming.
I am glad vor the Federaton Players. Really nice to hear that it goes on for you guys.
BUT: what about the promises you made for your so called "45days patch". Additional (additional? There was nothing so better "PvE Content for Klingons at least") PvE content for Klingons? What about more costumization for Klingons and special costumization for Orions, Gorn and Nausicaans. It' s all in the game but we can' t choose it. What about crafting for Klingons? What about better PvP?
There were much more players playing Klingons if it would be worth do to. But it is not as we Klingons told to you guys many times. More Klingons would also mean much more fun for PvP playing Federations. It' s always better to play a two faction war than faction vs. faction. Most of us prefer to fight the federation, so please make Klingons equal to Federation and give it all stuff this great race do deserve.
To Vertigo: the majority of players does want a death penalty. In a MMO it must be worth something to fight for and PvP IS and will be a great part of this game: Don' t care whether Star Fleet or KDF. If a ship get's dmg in the series It IS damaged then. So it is quite clear and logical to do something similar here.
But you should come down. I am very sure it will not be an unfair or too hard one;)
All sounds good except the time frame. 6 to 12 months? Many of these things are musts in an MMO released these days. I really hope you can get it all in before the game is written off by all but the most hard core fans or simply replaced by the next great MMO before you can get it to truely shine.
Yes a lot of people are going to stress out and complain because it's not what they want THEIR game to be bit it's an MMO, it has to be balanced towards the needs of the many (like what I did there?)
This game is still in its infancy, there's going to be teething problems and there's going to be tantrums but I like to think it will all be worth it in the end. I agree with some posters that a death penalty may shake things up but it may also be a very harsh thing to do, especially if you're in the mission called "Trapped" and you can't tell your TRIBBLE from your elbow because the frame rate commits suicide.
Oh and the thing I'd really really like to see in expansion one is, for the love of God, please give us more character slots. 3 just isn't enough.
no dude i just play MMOs since 10 years and if you dont see any issues this game has you really need glasses...
Every second mission is bugged, half of the fleetactions dont work and we dont wanna talk about an translation that is worse then the google translator...
**** like that needs to be done before they update content or it will get even worse...
I think its you that never played a game before cause first you fix the bugs then you add the content is the normal way...
I you Cryptic.
Maybe its because I'm used to the so called "support" of this mmo... you know.. with wings and such..
but you are doing it all right.
Thank you for informing us, thank you for keeping up the good work.
Death Penalty should be tied to content sliders (which they ARE adding, go Craig!).
If I want to have dumb fun with friends and don't mind, say, little to no skill points or drops, I should be able to go no DP and zerg (and TRY TO DIE for KICKS) with friends.
Meanwhile, rewards should be tied to the content slider.
No risk, no reward. I can accept that. But give me the option to have no risk and no reward.
This! I really like that Idea... Let those who want have some challenge and those who just want to play casual have their fun, too...
Even if I see myself as more of a casual player - This is Space... This is dangerous... Players should watch their back and be on their toes and then be rewarded for that... See: Signature below

Evidence please. I have not encountered and serious bugs in quite sometime. I have only done 3 different fleet actions so far but none of those bugged on me either. It seems you have already made up your mind and no amount of evidence is going to sway you.
That entire 'state of the game' post basically illustrates the exact reason that prompted me to get a lifetime subscription.
Man I love you guys, goats and all.
My interest is particularly piqued about the death penalties and the difficulty slider!

Every second mission bugged? OMG I am blind...I don' t see it:D
Calm down man. A lot of ppl do playing MMOs since years. You are not the only one. But a man who really has such an experience does not need to cry it out every two seconds in my opinion.
i rly dont like DP aswell, i was not planning on wining on a forum as it is abit useless but this i rly have to say DP is just some wowcrap and not STO i feel.
why put DP cus all MMO do that(them crappy ones) or it adds to the game?
for me it dont add to a game.
instead i like ammo or batteries for better shielding or lesser if you dont have mutch cash or somthing.
making someone broke on DP cus they are presistant is like hey you want ti finish somthing in a mission? PAY UP THE FEE!!!
see the hostyle part there?
so thats my opinion on the DP thing
DP=NO
respec= rather dont but ok make it prisy cus those things rly count and dont make it free to swap builds(i think)
ah ye and the joke Quotes : Once Tribbles up and running (We will be petting it till it grows ) well be able to start releasing those core game adjustments to you guys for deeper testing and feedback.
lol
Respec
i find it stpd to add like i am a noob?
Death Penalty
thats like removing effort from missions unless its like dp in less dmg kinda way, but somthing tells me you say: PAY UP!!! cus wow uses same thing. srry for my boldness there. Difficulty Slider
ye great thought there cus most missions i do with eyes closed put a hard mode and add a title.
More open auto-fire
Replayable missions
Improving Memory Alpha
Fixing those Commodity missions
i would like some titlesystems like pvp god or somthing
Allso i want to say if you go and nerf the bejees out of like klingon ships(i dont have a klingon char though) you make klingon worthless to kill if they die on sight. so dont plz.
REMEBER : If you go and nerf allot you nerf youre players motivation to fight.
so focus that tribble you have and test on like 2sec faster heals and shortnen the phaser with 2 sec or making it faster slightly.
i am shure if you remove exploit or nerf that and lower the klingon dmg or whatever you ruin allot.
ok this is just my thought about everything as you guys asked me to put here as a loyal Lifetimer on this game.
i played about all MMO they ever made out there incl free to play and i might say focus on the raid 1st (cus we want that)
If a Death Penality is implemented, I think the penality should be in the form of experience points lost... take for example the amount of points you would have GAINED from defeating the opponent that just defeated you...
Putting RISK into a game will change how the game is played for almost everyone... it changes strategies and make people make sharper decisions. It adds some intelligence into it rather than the just fly into a bunch of Dominion Warships screaming like a crazed berserker just because there is no consequence.
I still have 2 missions i cant finish cause for both fleetaction dont work so they should fix them first before they add new content where half of it dont work neither...
There are still alot of bugs in the game just take a look in the forums and you will find tons of reported bugs and stuff that dont work...
Ah yeah "support" would be nice too tickets that dont get responded after 2 weeks or longer shouldnt be allowed to call themself support.
Just get current issues done before starting new stuff!
Apart from a few "run-on" sentences, I really enjoyed the latest SotG. It's good to know that Cryptic:STO has some great additional content and engine tweaks on the slate. It is even more comforting to know that they are committed to us, their playing customers.
As for complaints, well, whenever there is more than a single opinion involved there will always be disagreement and, potentially, discontent. For the sake of the larger community, it is very important to distinguish between constructive criticism and just plain "griefing". Simply being the "loudest" voice, or most acerbic poster shouldn't grant you a higher consideration from the DevTeam. It would be like Cain being rewarded for killing Abel. Unfortunately, that sometimes happens in the world of MMO's and the larger community then suffers.
With that in mind, I would strongly suggest that the Cryptic:STO DevTeam tread very lightly on the issue of "Death Penalties". As the game is currently configured, penalties would most often be extremely counter-productive and, likely, lead to greater player dissatisfaction. If a penalty is enabled, perhaps, it should be an Admiral (T5) exclusive feature, or tied in with the proposed Difficulty Slider as a user configurable option. Frankly, aside from a few forum trolls, I have not encountered a single player who has demanded such a feature, or even believes it a wise choice of potential game additions.
The idea of a "Difficulty Slider" is also a questionable avenue of development. Shouldn't the playing field be level for all players? If implemented, I would, humbly, suggest that the settings only be adjustable for increased difficulty off of a normalized base level of difficulty.
As for some players have trouble in specific engagements, these can be addressed in several, far more effective, ways. If the problem is in specific missions, the mission devs can simply rework the scenario and its components. Additionally, npc enemies can be restricted in their healing, buffing and equipment building abilities by adjusting their timers. If the issue is in PvP, the player can be expected to learn more effective skills through practice, or a system of tiered pvp zones can be implemented in which certain level and pvp merit points are required to advance to the next zone.
One final concern regarding Difficulty Sliders is the potential for abuse by less scrupulous players using 3rd party software. While the possibility for such abuse may be remote, it will matter little to the players getting destroyed by a denebian slug competing against them with elevated dps caps and damage thresholds in a pvp zone using a "slider hack"
On future content I have only two requests : Enable the Romulan Faction and add Kilts and Sashes to the costume inventory. Kilts and Sashes would allow further personalization of player avatars. The presence of a Romulan Faction (one of the foundation species in the Star Trek aliti-verse) is critical to holding this player' attention over the "long haul".
Overall, the Cryptic:STO Dev Team deserves a "thumbs up" for delivering a compelling gaming experience and working to "put out the fires" as they are discovered. Maintaining contact with the "Community" is also a positive trait which deserves kudos. Thanks! <salutes>
I am very much against a Death Penalty that costs you skill points, especially if its harsh enough that it 'de-ranks' you.
I played FFXI, loved the game..till it got to the point where 1 death wiped out an entire play session of xp gain, or more, and de-leveled you after working hard to get that level.
If a Death Penalty does get put in, I hope its one of the mild ones that other players have suggested, the mini-game one sounds very nice and fun to do.
But again, I say personally (as in myself, my own opinion) leave Death Penalties out of the game.
how exactly did the arguments against death penalties get totally overheard?
Don't give up craig. we don't wat dp's ^^
I think the game play is working great without DP. If you really want to enage the community how about offering player surveys about upcoming game changes. All the other items you listed sounds great!

I doubt a DP in FFXI style is possible in STO since the levelsystem makes it kinda impossible to do so...
first i have to say that i arranged already 3 of my friends to buy this game, more from our wow guild coming
so... to the DP theme
i like the idea of not living in categories of TANK, HEAL and DDs
im playing science and i DONT wanna heal..
if u give us DP, harder as it is now.. , HEALS and TANKS will be asked, just to avoid death..DONT YOU SEE IT?
just make DP for raids like Crystalline Entity or such but not for casual missions and in PVP its misplaced too..
- the next playable race should be Romulans - but u should have enough PVE content to release it.. - respec - nice nice im looking forward to it, but add pls more detailed skills descriptions, so we know what we are buying - undines - are just misunderstood foolish *******s that remain an TRIBBLE for u to play if u need some enemy
- then i would like more ground combats, also in space and in the ship itself, perhaps also a chief medical, chief engineer, and so on would be an nice idea..
and pls repair the deep space encounters, so im not grabbed in, cause i have NO CHANCE to escape sometimes.. - END GAME CONTENT - i dont know how it is yet, as im only approaching captain, but i like the idea of earning more skills, even if they cost 1000 skill points.. for now.. (NO SKILL CAP)
- you should have a STORY, that leads somewhere.. like . an alliance with romulans - NOT remans, or klingies, but only 2 family clans, and perhaps there are more titles to earn, like - Romulan Ambassador, or someone like a Friend of a "R-Pah" house, or earn points at another factions, going either combat, diplomacy or aid..
- then there are RARE items to get in the game (just like in WOW, learn from the best - or better^)
.. i would like to fly a rare Romulan ship and still remain in the Starfleet - kirk did fly a romulan warbird - more than once.. (a small mission saga to get it.. perhaps only if u are respected by some Romulan/Klingon house)
.. add some time travel missions, like open some space sectors portals only if I did some mission saga..
- BOs and enemies Voice Overs would be also nice..
- ROCKS 4 ALL! - EXTRAS - i like the "promotion ceremony".. just give us more - birthday party, duelling, poker play at some bases (credits), in some time perhaps a base (for ambassadors) to held cocktail parties for their guilds to exchange stuff, BOs and so on.. to aid the base colonists to grow the population, to do some research or build some stuff, perhaps one could earn some better skilled BOs there, also rare... ideas ideas..
i allow myself to copy someones great stuff here:

I think its you that never played a game before cause first you fix the bugs then you add the content is the normal way...
Maybe its because I'm used to the so called "support" of this mmo... you know.. with wings and such..
but you are doing it all right.
Thank you for informing us, thank you for keeping up the good work.
This! I really like that Idea... Let those who want have some challenge and those who just want to play casual have their fun, too...
Even if I see myself as more of a casual player - This is Space... This is dangerous... Players should watch their back and be on their toes and then be rewarded for that... See: Signature below
seconded ..no dp's
Evidence please. I have not encountered and serious bugs in quite sometime. I have only done 3 different fleet actions so far but none of those bugged on me either. It seems you have already made up your mind and no amount of evidence is going to sway you.
Man I love you guys, goats and all.
My interest is particularly piqued about the death penalties and the difficulty slider!
Every second mission bugged? OMG I am blind...I don' t see it:D
Calm down man. A lot of ppl do playing MMOs since years. You are not the only one. But a man who really has such an experience does not need to cry it out every two seconds in my opinion.
why put DP cus all MMO do that(them crappy ones) or it adds to the game?
for me it dont add to a game.
instead i like ammo or batteries for better shielding or lesser if you dont have mutch cash or somthing.
making someone broke on DP cus they are presistant is like hey you want ti finish somthing in a mission? PAY UP THE FEE!!!
see the hostyle part there?
so thats my opinion on the DP thing
DP=NO
respec= rather dont but ok make it prisy cus those things rly count and dont make it free to swap builds(i think)
ah ye and the joke Quotes : Once Tribbles up and running (We will be petting it till it grows ) well be able to start releasing those core game adjustments to you guys for deeper testing and feedback.
lol
Respec
i find it stpd to add like i am a noob?
REMEBER : If you go and nerf allot you nerf youre players motivation to fight.
so focus that tribble you have and test on like 2sec faster heals and shortnen the phaser with 2 sec or making it faster slightly.
i am shure if you remove exploit or nerf that and lower the klingon dmg or whatever you ruin allot.
ok this is just my thought about everything as you guys asked me to put here as a loyal Lifetimer on this game.
i played about all MMO they ever made out there incl free to play and i might say focus on the raid 1st (cus we want that)
Putting RISK into a game will change how the game is played for almost everyone... it changes strategies and make people make sharper decisions. It adds some intelligence into it rather than the just fly into a bunch of Dominion Warships screaming like a crazed berserker just because there is no consequence.
Thanks! <salutes>
.
I think the game play is working great without DP. If you really want to enage the community how about offering player surveys about upcoming game changes. All the other items you listed sounds great!
I doubt a DP in FFXI style is possible in STO since the levelsystem makes it kinda impossible to do so...
so... to the DP theme
i like the idea of not living in categories of TANK, HEAL and DDs
im playing science and i DONT wanna heal..
if u give us DP, harder as it is now.. , HEALS and TANKS will be asked, just to avoid death..DONT YOU SEE IT?
just make DP for raids like Crystalline Entity or such but not for casual missions and in PVP its misplaced too..
- the next playable race should be Romulans - but u should have enough PVE content to release it..
- respec - nice nice im looking forward to it, but add pls more detailed skills descriptions, so we know what we are buying
- undines - are just misunderstood foolish *******s that remain an TRIBBLE for u to play if u need some enemy
PLEASE do NOT dumb the game down to some stupid, pay x amt of energy credits, sink that is unimaginative and pass up this kind of a chance to generate REAL, exciting, immersive content where your ship and your crew depend on your minigame actions....and those consoles we see in our interiors actually are USED for something...lol
curious if someone reads this
take care
