Judging from some of the shipname origin descriptions there seems to be an unusual high rate of rather zealous people playing a game that is set in a universe were science has completely overthrown religion...

    The USS Ma'at (pronouced Mu-aught)

Ma'at is the name of my wife and I's cattery. Ma'at is, depending on the translation you use, either the Egyptian goddess of justice or the archtypal principle of Justice. Take your pick :)

    U.S.S. Blackhawk

Nostalgically named after one of my favourite (if buggy and sometimes poorly designed) adventure games, 'Codename: ICEMAN' by Sierra. The game in general was modelled after the movies 'The Hunt for Red October' and 'Navy SEALs'. In it, you play US Navy Lt. Commander John Westland, assigned as Executive Officer to the nuclear submarine U.S.S. Blackhawk.

Always thought it was a good name. :)

    I.R.F. Marchosias

it is Romulan Tradition to name a ship not on an Idea but after someone. So I named the ship after a evil god of war who wants to be good, which I felt fit the Theme of a Romulan Serving in the Federation.

    For a Definition of Marchosias:
Dictionnaire Infernal - Collin de Plancy (1863) (paraphrased)
A great marquis of hell who commands 30 legions, Marchocias appears as a she-wolf with griffin wings and a serpent's tail, and spit flames. In human form, Marchocias appears as a grand soldier. He obeys exorcists and the domination of angels.

Pseudomonarchia daemonum - Johann Wier (1583) (quoted)

Marchosias is a great marquesse, he sheweth himselfe in the shape of a cruell shee woolfe, with a griphens wings, with a serpents taile, and spetting I cannot tell what out of his mouth. When he is in a mans shape, he is an excellent fighter, he answereth all questions trulie, he is faithfull in all the conjurors businesse, he was of the order of dominations, under him are thirtie legions: he hopeth after 1200 yeares to returne to the seventh throne, but he is deceived in that hope.

Goetia - S. L. MacGregor Mathers (1904) (quoted) Marchosias, Goetia

The Thirty-fifth Spirit is Marchosias. He is a Great and Mighty Marquis, appearing at first in the Form of a Wolf having Gryphon's Wings, and a Serpent's Tail, and Vomiting Fire out of his mouth. But after a time, at the command of the Exorcist he putteth on the Shape of a Man. And he is a strong fighter. He was of the Order of Dominations. He governeth 30 Legions of Spirits. He told his Chief, who was Solomon, that after 1,200 years he had hopes to return unto the Seventh Throne. And his Seal is this, to be made and worn as a Lamen, etc.

USS Ishtar, for my all female science ship. (The more I think about it, the more I'm getting a serious Violet Lantern vibe off my crew).

USS Archon for my tac ship. It cruises the wilds of the federation and lays down the law through the delicate application of photon torpedos.

    USS Tiburon

Was actually a street sign I had seen a long time ago when I was a young, little kid on vacation with my family in California. The name had stuck with me. Years later I had found out that Tiburon is actually spanish.

I've named my the U.S.S. Erdeos.

When I started with the naming scheme, I wanted to try an "Element" theme for my ships. Of course, I'm not talking periodic table elements, more like the substances people once called elements (I.E. Earth, Fire, Water, etc.). I didn't want to end up calling my ship the "USS Terra" or something (for Earth, obviously) so I thought I'd use different languages to supply possible names. I wound up using the German word for earth (Erde) and adding the suffix "-os" just because it wouldn't seem all that obvious.

    I'm still thinking of possibilities for the other ships I'll obtain ^.^;;

U.S.S. Charlotte my daughter's name, and it makes a good ship name. I use it for my cruisers.

U.S.S. Robert G. Shaw Colonel Shaw of the 54th Regiment during the civil war. I felt like a soldier who died for equality and freedom, alongside his men regardless of their color, was a model example and a fitting Starfleet ship. Use this name for my escort ships.

Currently have a light cruiser by the name of USS Jovian, which means "Of or relating to Jupiter" being that my character hails from one of the larger moons of said planet. The following ships will be USS IO, USS Europa, USS Callisto and USS Ganymede, which are the names of the lovers of Zues, the greek equivalent of the roman god Jupiter and the names of the 4 larger, inner moons of jupiter. Though I have a feeling that IO will be too short and have to go with USS Thermisto instead, which is the next largest moon in orbit around jupitar.

During Open Beta I had the USS Hydra, being that my Alien character what from a planet in that constelation, Hydra being a many headed beast from greeko/roman mythology, and the following ship was named USS Tiamat, not got the babalonian god, but for the dragonhydra from the 80's cartoon series Dungeons and Dragons.
