It's obvious I'm going to need a laptop upgrade as I currently use an older 2007 MacBook Pro. I was at Best Buy looking at the ASUS G60VX priced at $949.
Comes with following:
Intel® Core2 Duo mobile processor P7450 - 2.13 GHz per core
4GB DDR2 memory
320GB Serial ATA hard drive (7200 rpm)
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M graphics

That's a good buy. STO should play at high. http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-260M.14559.0.html
I just read the specs: Creative Audigy HD man this is a good deal
Battery Life sucks but for a unit this powerful not unexpected. Up to 1 hour and 36 minutes. This is consider an desktop replacement. You can always get a usb battery pack. Good buy.
im running windows 2003 but i can play wow tuned all the way up no problem does that mean i shouldn't have a problem 3.2 duel proc and 3 gigs ram
I assume you mean a 3.2GHz dual-core CPU? That would be fine. And 3GB of RAM is fine.
As for Windows 2003, why are you running an enterprise server oriented OS? Windows 2003 is equivalent to Windows XP. For gaming, I'd run Windows XP or Windows 7. Cryptic didn't say if STO will work on Windows 2003 or 2008 server-oriented platforms.
Hey guys, I live pretty close to a frys electronics and I wanted to buy a good desktop for gaming forxmas but my budget is only 600-700 dollars. do you guys have any suggestions. I'm very new to pc gaming.
Tigard, Oregon
You can also have Fry's build you a system. I was in my local store today and ask. The labor for hardware only is $60.00. With OS install $100.00. I can help you pick parts. For $700.00 you can get a really good system.
Hey, White Knight and Cipher Nemo - I was posting under Captain Garrett before - I just wanted to say thanks for your help and advice! I got my new system and tested CO and am very impressed with how the system performs! I know you can't really go wrong with certain aspects of cpu's, but it meant a lot to get a little piece of mind regarding things I didn't quite know about. Much thanks!

I've read a lot of these posts which allude to the rather odd list of graphics cards.
I have a Dell Inspiron 545 Core 2 Quad Q9400 / 2.66 GHz
8GB RAM / 64-bit OS
1TB HD
ATI RADEON HD 3450 with 256GB
I just purchased a NVIDIA GeForce 210 graphics card with the following specs:
512 MB DDR2 memory
589 MHz core clock
1402 MHz Processor Clock
4.7 Billion/sec Texture Fill rate
800 MHz Memory Data rate (effective)
64-bit memory interface
6.4 GB/sec memory bandwith
With the addition of this new graphics card, can any of our more tech-saavy friends tell me if my system will run STO at optimal settings?
Thanks!!!
Unfortunately you went from a low-end video card to another low-end video card. For NVIDIA, I'd go at least 220, as that's double the fillrate of your 210. But for quality gaming without lag and decent;y high graphics, I'd go with at least a 240. That 7950 they mention as minimum requirement has 13.4 GT/sec vs. the 210 with 4.7 GT/sec. Their minimum is high, but that should give you an idea of how underpowered the 210 is.

You should ways research before you buy something for your PC. The G 210 is the value card for the Nvidia 200 series. If STO will play on this card it will be at the lowest setting and resolution.
It looks like the Dell Inspiron 545 is equip with a 300 W PSU. You can add a ATI HD 4650 or 4670. These cards should let you run STO at med settings. If you want to run more powerful cards you will need to replace the PSU.
EDIT: cipher_nemo again, I need to type faster. . I was thinkning about tell him about the GT 240 but he would need a 350 W PSU. Ops, I transpose 12 for 21. Thanks

He bought the 210, not the 120. But same difference, still a value card. Newer does not always equal better, lutherd.

It's Socket 775. Also I believe it only has a 220 W PSU.
Thanks, I have no idea how you found that out, but im happy, From what I understand my CPU is holding me in the mid range, the rest is all in the max range. May see if I can get a better processor to remedy that. This also came with a Windows 7 upgrade but I have not installed it, now sure how STO does on Windows 7.

There's good news and bad news for the X1700 in the 3D department. The Nvidia GeForce G100 graphics card is at least DX10 hardware-compliant, so our 3D benchmark tests and games were able to load. However, the numbers I got on the two game tests, Crysis and World in Conflict, were quite unplayable single-digit frame rates. That means that the X1700 is ill suited for playing current 3D games. The GeForce G100 is good for light 3D and video playback, rather than playing 3D games.
ok then, will buy a better video card and processor, not a problem.
little edit
oh it has a 350 w psu.
The video card is more important. Doing both would be better.
With that PSU you could get a ATI HD 4650/4670 or a Geforce GT 240. Next month ATI should have the new 5650/5670 cards out. With that PSU not much you can do. Slime-line PC's are the worst to service and upgrades. No room and special design PSU. Plus you'll the need video card to be of low-profile design. Newegg has four 4650 listed. I can only recommend the Visontek or ASUS. The ASUS is using a weird double bracket low profile which takes up two slots and blocks the x1 slot on your system. If you are not using it then you are OK. If you need the x1 slot you will need this. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010380048+106792627+1067944046&QksAutoSuggestion=&ShowDeactivatedMark=False&Configurator=&Subcategory=48&description=&Ntk=&CFG=&SpeTabStoreType=&srchInDesc=low+profiles
Very limited selection on low profile cards. You can also google "low profile 4650"
Quick...will a NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 1GB work for STO???
Yes, it will let you play STO at high/very high. But you need to make sure your PSU can power the card. You need to look on the box for the system requirement.
