If "rich folk" were the ones willing to sell Zen to get dil...

Wouldn't there always be new players (a next generation so to speak) starting the game that would replace these folks? They'd follow in the footsteps of the people behind them... purchasing large amounts of Phoenix boxes to upgrade their gear and facing years of filling dilithium thirsty Colony fleet projects to complete the holding in their new fleets.

Yes. But that assumes that those players exist, and that they are not joining fleets that are already maxed out.

and if these players exist, and they must also stay longer enough in the game for having an impact on the economy. Nothing is done to keep new players, who try STO after having watched discovery (excepted if they just want a basic disco toon- fed or kdf) or picard.

is 10k dil 20k dil enough for each additional part for the set? 100k?

I don't think that would be enough.

Back when the Colony fleet holding seemed to be doing the trick as a dil sink the amount of dilithium involved was 88,000 dilithium per day per Tier 5 project. This would vary according to a variety of things that affect a fleet's dil discount as well as what tier the holding was progressed to. As a Beta fleet, we ran two projects for a total of 176,000 dil per day or 5,280,000 per month. Those numbers could be doubled as projects were also run in a second sister fleet to cover both factions.

For something to work as a dil sink in a manner similar to the Colony holding I think similar numbers would need to be involved and then maintained over time.

    Think bigger

    Simple:

Add ZEN to buy with dilithium.

No. Zen is a currency that requires real world money. It is a source of income that keeps the game running. You don't convert your cash money currency to one you don't have to pay a cent for like that unless you want to end the game from lack of funding.

And before you mention the dilithium Exchange, that Zen is still purchased by someone, meaning Cryptic still gets money out of it. Who spends the Zen after that is of no concern and the player selling the zen traded it for dilithium.

I understand what you are saying but that is not how it will work in real life. It is not that straight forward. People will not stop buying ZEN in fact they will buy more ZEN.

Let me explain: There are people who play this game as Free to Play. The exchange rate dili/ZEN is high. So people need to spend much dili to buy ZEN. So these people have to play much, and log on often, to play the game to earn dili.

The more hours some one spends in game the more likely it will be that a person will eventually spend money to buy ZEN. Hence in total the sales will grow.

And people who are used to buy ZEN will not buy much less ZEN because the amount of hours to grind enough dili to get ZEN is huge, and the time to refine millions of dili is long. Plus there are still the other things that require dili.

Even if the ZEN buyers would sometimes exchange some dili for ZEN, that would cost Cryptic far less then the price reductions the do for store items. ZEN sales will grow, the more hours people spend on the game.

Fleet Buff Projects with different tiers are a good idea for dilithium sinks.
